Hi, I have a few questions about reflections in a deffered rendering pipeline.
Fresnel reflection: Should it happen before the lighting phase, or after? For example if my reflection is against constant color, say red, and a fragment is reflecting it to fullest but also half dark based on its normal and position, should the output be reflection color (pure red) or dark red (reflection color + light).
Logically I think it should be the first option (ie reflection override light) because environment reflection color should already represent the ambience light. But this seems a bit too shiny when I try it. Is it a matter of picking the right values or I misunderstood it?

1. Screen space reflection and light - same question - should I work on the final buffer with lights applied on it? Logic says yes (if you stand in a dark room with a mirror and reflect a lit object, mirror will show it as lit) but I wanna make sure it works the same in computer graphics before I do some serious overhaul to support it.
   
2. Fresnel and preservation of energy in PBR - should reflection strength be a part of the "diffuse" vs. specular calculation? Or is it calculated on top of that and does not affect this clafulation?

Most Profound Acknowledgment of Failure

I sit on these steps, I draw conclusions.
I spent five dollars on Hindu Literature as a Catholic from a stand off the street,
am I open-minded or impressionable?
A book on unnatural happiness written by a Yale Graduate,
does it sound enlightening or insufferable?
Pondering in faith, spiritual osmosis sounds relieving but the masses condemn it, seen as disconnected and unrealistic.
I trust I'm not wasting my time, that it's not too late. Not too late to see a reality where my spiritual scars have little texture on the carcass of my soul.
I question the extent of my appearance, to be attractive is relative. My skin stretching and my hair growing.
Fallible to external criticism, my Achille's heal. I lay with my partner at night, shuffling in certain positions to keep those hands away from the folds and dough-ey softness near my belly.
A partner so loving that my discomfort with my physical form is the one thing deemed unattractive.
Men come and go, they'll go out the way to even fuck a corpse. I'm choosing to take a masculine approach on this matter as men have disposed of women so consistently, so shamelessly, so recklessly.

I've been searching for recommendations on the best books and other resources on this and similar subreddits, checked the pinned megathread, but I’m still not sure what to pick.
Honestly, I'm not sure what my goal is. I've always struggled with math, and it's been a source of frustration my whole life. My parents hired a tutor when I was in middle and high school, but I still didn't do well, even after years of personal tutor once a week, my math grades were bad, huge contrast to the other school subjects.
In college, I was even EXPELLED due to a failed statistics class exam (three attempts in a row), I tried to get my bachelor’s in ‘crisis management’ and we had a math and statistic classes which killed me. I eventually got back and managed to get my poor degree, it’s been 10 years since then, but math won’t stop haunting me.
I still find it hard to calculate easy stuff in my head, like percentages or subtraction/addition, I need to use a pen and paper to visualize these calculations…
I have always been struggling with logic as well. Every time I try to learn something or get new skills, or simply watch a video on cosmos and other stuff I like that actually seems straightforward for many people, I fail to understand and have to ask my friends to explain it to me, which annoys them because to them it’s like fighting against a wall, I’m so bulletproof.
Of course I have ADHD like a typical person these days, it definitely contributes to my struggles, but I often think I’m just stupid. I've had to quit jobs due to my inability to understand math concepts, such as those in economics/business. Even Excel tables and formulas are my biggest enemies at any job.
When I play video games and check the content online, I'm shocked by the complex math involved in calculating damage multipliers and other game mechanics, content creators and the community always make these huge spreadsheets calculating everything possible and explaining it to a wider audience, but I never understand.
I try to take logic/erudition tests sometimes, but I fail miserably. I feel so vulnerable and pathetic. I don’t understand why it takes so long for me to ‘get it’, even when everyone does on a daily basis.
I want to try to change this. Even though there’s no college in my life anymore, no exams, I can’t ignore the math involvement in our daily life. What would you recommend for me to read/watch/listen to in my free time? Math has many categories, and I'm unsure where to start. It has a lot of categories, every book is, for instance, dedicated to applied math or discrete math, etc. Also, what level? For preschoolers? Lol.
Khan Academy only offers ‘trigonometry’ and ‘middle school statistics’ units, that’s it. At least in my language. It’s gonna be a bad idea to try learning math in a foreign language (Eng), I think, because I don’t know a single math term in English. I don’t want to complicate everything even futher.
As for books, YouTube channels and websites, everyone recommends a different one, so I'm unsure how to choose, there are too many. What section should I even choose? Algebra? Calculus? Statistics? Or even middle-school stuff? Btw, your calculus has a different structure from ours, like Calculus I, Calculus II, III. We had a different structure at school in my country, so I’m even more confused.
Some people suggest "Basic Mathematics" by Serge Lang, but others say it's not exactly ‘basic’ per se and might be a bit harsh for some idiots like me. Should I start with something more ‘pop’ like "The Joy of X"? Or to hell with it, just start math on Khan Academy in English, learning all the new vocabulary?

Do you have any recommendations, such as handbooks or encyclopedias, that contain mathematical hints or tricks we can use to create and optimize Excel formulas?

Half venting, half actual discussion point I guess.
Is anyone else just sick of hearing this prescribed to anyone who expresses any kind of longing for other people in their lives? That’s not to say there’s no logic to it — there definitely is, and I think a lot of people could in fact greatly benefit from following this advice — but I hate how it’s treated as the end-all, be-all diagnosis and cure for every lonely person and every type of loneliness.
It doesn’t help that the way it’s delivered often feels so flippant and inattentive, even at times derisive. At best, it often seems like the speaker is fully aware that both you and they know this is a meaningless platitude. At worst, there’s a kind of sneer behind it — “become a more interesting person to yourself”, as if they see someone who wants to connect with others and automatically assumes that that person must be incredibly dull, self-hating, or both in order to end up this way.
I think this common advice ignores the fact that the kind of satisfaction we can derive from self-improvement and the kind of satisfaction we can derive from being in loving community with others are two different things. They might be related — there’s is in fact truth to the idea of loving yourself first, it’s just overstated — but one cannot wholly replace the other. We’re right as a society to criticize people who derive too much self-worth from seeking out attention or approval from others, but we don’t seem to see a problem with an imbalance in the other direction.
We seem to think saying ‘learn to love yourself’, or ‘develop interesting hobbies’, or ‘hit the gym’, or whatever can substitute for the fact that we are social animals that can’t do everything alone.
I can become the strongest, most interesting man in the world — and I’ll still be alone. I would still crave people to care about how my day went, people to laugh and complain with, people who will move the heavens when I’m in need and people who, by simply being around me, can fill a room with familiar comfort. I’ll still crave warmth, and an interdependent community I can feel like I truly belong to, and someone who cares about me to ask me mundane little things at the end of a long day so I don’t feel like a goldfish who simply lives parallel to other people rather than among them.
Because honestly? I’m quite partial to myself and I already enjoy my own company. I’ve been given what feels like a once in a lifetime chance to do my dream career, I have so many creative interests and I’ve learned so much about the world around me simply by being curious and happy to use my imagination. I grew up entertaining myself as an only child with emotionally distant parents, and I think I’m very good at it.
But that doesn’t fix the social animal in me. That doesn’t fix the longing to be seen — truly seen — by someone else and to see them in return. That doesn’t fix my longing for a deep connection or the worry that something is wrong with me when I feel others recoil when I get too excited about my interests or when I watch others be tender with each other and wonder when I will get to participate in this exchange of care. That doesn’t cure how isolated I feel watching everyone I know slowly pair off and have less and less time for me as they prioritize their partners or even start families or move away and wondering if I will never be anyone else’s priority. It doesn’t fix the warmth I miss from being seen and heard and touched by other minds interacting with mine.
I am travelling right now and finding myself talking and making comments about everything I see to an imaginary friend in my head. I can see everything in the world and it’ll feel meaningless to me if there’s no one else I can show them to.

I'm racking my brain trying to figure this out and could use some feedback. The gist is that I have two modals that consist of a single input. When you dismiss modal 1 even with the keyboard active and input in focus, it closes with one tap as desired.
But when you try to dismiss modal 2 with the keyboard/input active, it takes two taps. One to blur off the input/dismiss keyboard, and the next to actually close the modal as intended. I don't understand why the second modal takes 2 taps.
My only theory is that the hierarchy is playing the difference. Modal 1 is in the Screen component itself, high up in the component hierarchy.
Modal 2 is inside a component, which is inside another component. I wonder if this somehow plays a factor.
Other than where they are located within the component tree, the modals are near identical. From the way they are called, to the parameters associated. The Inputs are near identical too. I've combed this over to see if I'm somehow implementing them differently or if there's a parameter missing, but they're pretty much the same.
Here is a the screen component. This modal works as expected with a single press Canceling or Ok'ing.
But the second modal lives inside and then inside another component called I didn't include the code for them but can if needed. I am hoping someone already knows this quick from past experience and can direct me down the right path based on the description.

Gameplay Rules

1. Drawing Cards:
   
   • On their turn, a player can draw a card from either the stockpile or the discard pile.
   • To draw from the discard pile, the player must:
     • Have a total of at least 75 points in their hand (counting only sets and sequences).
     • Meld immediately with the card drawn from the discard pile.
2. Melding:
   
   • To meld, a player must form valid sets (three or four cards of the same rank but different suits) or sequences (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit).
   • When melding with a card from the discard pile, the player must:
     • Meld the card drawn along with other cards from their hand to form valid sets or sequences.
     • Ensure their total meld points are at least 75 points.
   • If another player has already melded before you, you must have more points in your hand (considering sets and sequences) than the previously melding player to draw from the discard pile.
3. Discarding Cards:
   
   • If an opponent has melded, you cannot discard a card that could potentially be used by them to meld.
4. Adding to Melds:
   
   • If you have melded, you can add cards to your opponents' melds if they have also melded.

I finally got my wife approved after almost 8 months of waiting, and I wanted to publish my story here so that it may help or inform people waiting for theirs. (I had posted a rant a month ago, but I deleted it for people arguing whether my expedite request was valid or not)
Submitted all the documentation for her September 22nd of 2023 and she got her fingerprints done a week later. Never heard anything since then, and I got a letter requesting more evidence in January 2024 for her greencard.
We replied the same week, and then again, heard nothing.
At the 6 month mark of waiting, I started following up regularly and I even got a call back from a tier 2 officer who told me it was just pending and to wait, that I had until May 22nd to send an official inquiry on the wait, but until then, I was within normal processing time.
I decided to expedite the case, for the following reasons: - I had an offer letter for a pilot internship which would put me in a position that is not financially viable for my family (and I had the instructor write a letter saying It would be a full time commitment similar to a full time job) - My wife had a job offer letter from a company looking for an HR position - The job was pushing for her to work for them, and the CEO was willing to write a letter saying that they would lose money to hire her, since she is multilingual and has over 15 years of HR experience (they estimated the amount of hiring 3 people in order to match her skill level) - We recently moved to a different apartment. We live in a high cost city, and I had inherited a cheap apartment rental contract from an old tenant who was my friend, but It wasn't renewed, so our new places rent calculated to almost double what I was paying before, and it wasn't financially logical long term - Showed the math between my savings and what was being spent with us moving to the new place (I basically showed it was not sustainable long term) - A cover letter basically begging and explaining everything
I sent the expedite request and almost a month went by with no information. I called the USCIS number practically everyday, and I was told to wait, that the case hadn't even been assigned to an officer yet. I asked for an officer to call me back, who did, and they basically questioned me as to why I would bring my wife here if I couldn't financially support her (which I thought was rather insulting after almost 7 months of waiting, so I posted a reddit rant) and he ended up telling me to just wait and hold on, that they are backed up.
Two weeks ago, I got in contact with my local congresswoman, and I opened a case with them. I submitted to them all my expedited documents, and I asked them to try to inquire about the delay.
Yesterday I got a call from the local congresswoman notifying me they approved the work permit, and that there was no real reason for the delay, just that they stated it was the standard process (She forwarded me the email they sent her).
Almost 8 months of waiting, and I know people from my wifes country who have been waiting for 12+ months with still no work authorization. I suggest to everyone to send an expedite request if you have the documents to support your case and especially if your case is past 6-7 months. You'd be suprised.
My wife's greencard is still in process, and if I don't hear anything by early September (almost a year later by then), I will be contacting my local congresswoman again or suing. For reference, I am a USC and my wife and I have been married for more than two years, have a kid together, and I lived in her country for more than three years full time. I even worked there and reported taxes to the US from there. I hope this helps someone.
