If you’ve been to a different steak house such as Luzern, you may be disappointed. But for its price I think it’s good enough. The meat looks tough pero tender ra diay. I think more salt and pepper will do wonders since it’s kinda bland for me.
Taste and price: 7/10 Atmosphere and service: 9/10

15 mins Airfryer Technique: Ribeye Steak
For those who are hyper-busy and working around the clock, and have frozen steaks in your freezer...
All you need is an Airfryer + 1 frozen steak + 15 minutes.
  1. Presoak your frozen steak 🥩 in water for 2 mins (assuming your steaks are prepacked in airtight plastic seal)
  2. Remove steak from plastic seal, dab little dry with paper towel and add salt and/or black pepper
  3. Preheat Airfryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (or 200 degrees celcius) for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the steak into airfryer and cook at 400 degrees for 5 minutes
  5. After 5 minutes, flip the steak - cook at 400 degrees for another 5 mins* (well done)
* - 3 mins if you prefer medium rare - 4 mins if you prefer medium well - 5 mins if you prefer 80% well done
  1. Ready to serve.
  2. add butter slices on steak top for more fat / flavor
Here's a 290 grams Ribeye finished at 4 mins (after first flip)
I usually request for 350-400 grams Ribeyes from my butcher - much better for those who love bloodier results.

Note: Cooking steaks on cast iron pans is defo much tastier, and searing on the outsides crispy golden brown.
For me, this is my grab and go technique if 20 mins is all I have to spare before I make a run for the door to my upcoming tasks.
I would rather eat an airfryer steak than to be tempted by convenience of a steak cooked in vegetable oils :-(( --- which made me quite sick for 2-3 days. Taste wise, airfried steak is acceptable, not great, but at least I am in knowldege control of my beef intake.

Want to save a few bucks while helping culinary students gain more dining experience? Visit a technical college and see when their Culinary restaurant is open.
Many technical colleges offer culinary arts programs, allowing students to cook and practice their cooking and serving skills. Therefore, it’s natural for them to have restaurants that serve the public. The food is much cheaper compared to regular restaurants, and tipping is not an option (they didn’t allow me to add tips on the receipt). However, I personally gave them a 20% tip in cash to encourage them, as they are obviously not making money from serving me since they are still students. I got a 4oz sirloin steak with potatoes, roasted veggies, a side of clam chowder, and bread for $12—$15 after tax. You cannot beat that anywhere else. So give it a try; I highly recommend it. It’s a win-win situation: you get delicious food at an affordable price while also giving future chefs more experience in serving and cooking great food.

2024.06.01 07:24 Virtual-Chris Observations and Tips

Here are my observations from our trip. We spent a few days in Tokyo prior to a cruise that visited… Shimizu, Nagoya (cancelled due to high winds), Kobe (overnight for Osaka and Kyoto), Kochi, Naha, and Miyakojima before dropping us in Taiwan. A special thanks to many contributors on this sub for the many tips I’m confirming here. 😊
Arrival at Narita: - Fill out the immigration forms online before you leave for the smoothest experience for everyone. It does not really save you any time… you go through the same line and process as folks with paper forms. The difference is that online validates your entries, if you do something wrong on the paper form you have to correct in front of the agent which creates a delay for everyone. - Plan at least an hour for customs clearance - maybe more. There’s free wifi while standing in line. - We took the Narita Express from the airport to Shinjuku. It was the easiest option from my research and was super easy in practise. Cost was reasonable… buy tickets on arrival at the in person ticket office or nearby kiosks. Watch a video on YouTube to familiarize yourself with the process. There’s lots of room for luggage on the train
Language and Reception: - I read a lot about language barriers during my research but English was not a problem… the same as nearly anywhere else in the world these days. Almost everyone speaks English that we encountered but in the rare circumstance that wasn’t the case, Google Translate on our phone was helpful. It was also helpful for reading the occasional product label or sign that wasn’t in English using the photo option. Everyone smiles or chuckles if you use Konnichiwa or Arigato even if they speak perfect English. Hello and thank you are really the only words you need to know in any language in my experience to just show you’re aware of where you are and making a small effort. - Everyone appeared happy to have tourists as customers. Not annoyed or even indifferent, but happy. We didn’t experience any disapproving attitudes at all. People were even very happy to go out of their way to be helpful.
Hotel: - We stayed at the Kadoya Hotel in Shinjuku which offered the best value and location for our needs. I would definitely stay again. The rooms were very nice and decent sized. It’s a one block walk to entrance S2 or S3 for Shinjuku station on the quiet side of the station. - Being near the Golden Gai was nice as I could walk over there for a beer or drink after dinner while my wife rested. The Golden Gai is fun… tons of tiny hole in the wall bars/pubs. Some have a cover charge and some don’t. I chose one without a cover as I was only there for a single beer and had a great time chatting with some UK and Oz tourists.
Money: - We used a mix of Visa (with no foreign transaction fee), cash (obtained before departure) and Suica. Cash is helpful for snacks or other small purchases, and some small restaurants that only take cash. We used Suica for all trains, metro, buses, etc. - If you have an iPhone, you can’t beat the convenience of adding a Suica card to your Apple wallet. We loaded it before leaving and again mid-trip a couple of times from our Visa (also in Apple Wallet) - as long as you have internet access you can reload it anytime. - Overall, Tokyo and Japan are MUCH more affordable than Vancouver. Everything from metro fares to bottled water and restaurant food and beer was probably half the price on average compared to Vancouver. We typically paid about 1000 yen for a bowl of Ramen and 500-600 for a draft beer. The exception was espresso coffee drinks from Starbucks or any other cafe where they were equivalent price to what we pay at home.
Transportation: - The Tokyo (and Osaka/Kyoto) train and metro network is very easy to navigate. Probably one of the best in the world because you can just focus on line and station numbers and not on long unpronounceable station names. For example… if you’re going from Shinjuku to Asakusa, you could take the Shinjuku line to Bakuro-yokohama and switch to the Asakusa line at Higashi-Nihomnashi… which is a mouthful and says nothing about direction of travel. Thankfully you can just take the S-Line from S1 to S9 then the A-Line from A15 to A19. It couldn’t be easier. - Google Maps “Directions” is awesome for recommending routes with lines, station entrances, platforms, etc. When you get to a station, pick your destination in Google Maps and choose “Directions” and it will give you several train choices with full details. - As you might expect the cars at either end of the train will be less crowded than the cars in the middle or near the stairs/escalator… it’s worth the walk to the end of the platform.
Food: - I think I figured out why no one eats or drinks on the go… there’s no public trash cans. So, for example, if you buy a Starbucks coffee and walk around with it, you will have a tough time trying to dispose of the cup. Starbucks became our tourist oasis because they have bathrooms, wifi… and trash cans. LOL. It’s really very bizarre and encourages everyone to consume what you buy, where you buy it. Of course most convenience stores also have a trash bin for their customer use you can use as well. - Snacks… there’s no end of amazing snacks available from small stands, shops, and convenience stores. I’m not a big snacker, but my wife was snacking constantly and loving every minute of it. - Sushi… I think living in Vancouver has spoiled us with amazing Japanese restaurant and food choices. One big difference in Vancouver is that sushi restaurants have a lot of exotic rolls… dragon rolls, volcano rolls, etc. we didn’t see any of this in Japan. Sushi in Japan tends to be heavily focused on sashimi with simple rolls as an add on. Our fav sushi experience was at a conveyor belt restaurant where you just pick a plate as it passes by. Each plate has a colopattern that represents the cost of the item on it. When you’re done, they just add up the types of plates you have. - Ramen… There’s an insane variety of ramen and all are good. - Japanese Beef!!! We had a great but expensive Teppinyaki experience in Tokyo at Ginza Steak Shibuya. They offer all you can eat (within a time limit) A5 Wagyu beef but you can’t choose the cut and they don’t offer rib or tenderloin. Never the less, it’s fantastic beef and we left stuffed and smiling. I would only recommend it if you don’t mind spending over $100pp. The best beef I’ve ever had was at a Kobe steakhouse (Kobesteak Propeller) we visited on the cruise portion of the trip. They served us rib cut beef and it just melted in our mouth. Amazing! You get a small 160g portion but it’s quality over quantity and reasonably priced given the great appies and desert included. - We made reservations for the steak outings but otherwise just picked locations as we walked by or looking at nearby options on Google Maps.
Bathrooms: - Every toilet in Japan is high tech with a full suite of cleaning options and automated heated seats. The only feature it may be missing is a wifi hotspot 😛 - Bathrooms are easy to find at nearly every metro/train station and tourist attraction (and Starbucks and department stores). They are all very clean.
Communications: - I have a work funded roaming package so didn’t buy a local SIM plan. If I didn’t have my work plan I would have looked into this. - Free WiFi is plentiful and an app called Japan WiFi Auto Connect enables you to authenticate once with this app and then it runs in the background and auto authenticates you for a variety of free wifi hotspots streamlining the connection process. - Take advantage of downloading Google maps for offline use if you don’t have a cell plan in Japan.
Cruise Logistics: - I believe a lot of cruises depart from Yokohama, but ours departed from Tokyo. - The Tokyo International Cruise Terminal is very conveniently accessed by an elevated metro line (Yurikamome) from the Shimbashi metro/train station which is readily accessible from the Yamanote line or Ginza or Asakusa lines. - We used the Yamanote line and I was concerned about this for taking our luggage but fortunately we needed to do this on a Sunday and not during rush hour. My tip is if you’re taking luggage on a train or subway, go to the furthest car platform at the front or back end of the station as the cars in the middle or nearest the escalators/stairs will be standing room only packed while the end cars are much less busy and have seats available and plenty of room - to a greater or lesser extent depending on the time and day.

Alright people. Listen, service workers have lives and we aren't doormats! We also don't make the rules. Let me set the scene.
Ok... now, strap in.
I (under 20 F) and my other co worked on the floor (under 20 M) we're having kind of a slow night working, so we start talking and exchanging stories with each other and the kitchen staff. No one is there but us, the bartender, and maybe four or five people at the bar. It is roughly six something, so we have less than an hour before me, the kitchen staff, and the other floor worker went home.
Now, the door opens and in comes a semi-big family. Mostly adults, with some kids, two of the kids in what look like soccer outfits.
This was NOT our Karen. We will get there. But this family is still crucial to the story.
The mom walks up to me (at the register) and looks unsure. I smile and say "Hi! Welcome in! I'm ____" (for the sake of the story we can call my A). The mom (we will call her C because I am saving B for the B), says "I know y'all close at 7 and it is nearly that, but do you think we could order some dinner? The boys just finished their games and we don't have time to make anything."
My mind was blown!! At this point (I had worked their for about 4-5 months I think), I had never heard someone so considerate of me and the and the staff before. Y'all we get treated like crap a lot, as you will see from Karen later. But back to the situation.
"Of course ma'am! It isn't seven yet and I'm sure they have worked up quite an appetite! Plus we haven't begun the closing deep clean, so you are all good."
"Oh thank you! And if you need to kick us out, you can. We will take our food and go."
Y'all! I'm not making this up! This woman was so polite!!
"Don't worry about it! Have your family sit down and I'll take y'all's order! Go ahead and eat here! There is no reason to kick y'all out."
So, she placed an order. A bit on the long side, and left a really generous tip. We service peeps live off tips cause our hourly is so small and our hourly is what is taxed.
Anyway, we make the food. I bring it out. As I walk away after checking on them I hear C say "kids remember to clean up. Cause it isn't their mess. Plus, we want them to have time with their families."
She was too good to be true!!! They laughed and had a good time and left around 7:05. We didn't kick them out. They had cleaned up their trash and been so sweet! Even wishing us all a good night as they left!
Now here we go.
My shift ended around 7:30/7:45 as I had to stay after to clean. So I did. I went about my closing duties.
I restocked the drink station. I restocked cups, lids, straws. I took stock of what is in the back, what we needed more of. I restocked sauces and napkins and salt and pepper. Then onto cleaning. I swept the floors, sanitized the bathroom sink. I got rags and sanatizer and wiped down every table, every chair, every stool (except the occupied bar ones), and every chair. Then the chairs and stools were put up on the tables.
Next, help the kitchen. We scrubbed the grills, turned off the deep friers, and mopped the floor. Next we started packing ingredients to store in the fridge and freezers so as to keep them safe and fresh.
As we are packing the food, the phone rings. "Hello, this is _____. My name is A, how can I help you?"
"Yeah yeah. I'm B. I want to place an order for you to deliver to the bar (about five doors down). I tried to put one in online but it said I couldn't."
"I'm sorry ma'am. Our kitchen is closed. That is why it wouldn't let you."
"But it is only 7:30pm. Y'all don't close until 10pm."
"Normally yes. But it is New Years, so today, our kitchen and food services closed at 7. But our bar is open until 9."
"I know it is New Years, that is why I am at the bar and I want my food."
"Ma'am, our kitchen is closed."
"Ugh fine."
And she hung up. I thought it was over, but I should have known better.
I stayed to help the kitchen staff finish up cleaning so we could all go home. And we all enjoy each others company.
The door opens maybe 10 minutes later. In walks a woman and her husband. Not young, not old. I assume they are headed to the bar, so I continue assisting the kitchen, when I hear someone trying to get my attention.
I turn, and the woman is standing in front of the register. Before I can say anything she speaks. "We spoke over the phone. You said I couldn't get food delivered. So I had to walk myself all the way down here (less than five minute walk). Now I'm here to order."
Excuse me?!
"Ma'am. As I stated over the phone, our kitchen is closed. We aren't serving food anymore tonight."
"Well your door was unlocked. So obviously you are open. And the customer is right."
"Our bar is open for about another hour (plus some change). But our kitchen is closed. You are welcome to get a drink at the bar though--"
"No. I just came from the bar. I don't want your bar drinks. I want food."
This went on for about 15 minutes and I surprised even myself for keeping my cool, customer-service voice and face for this long.
Dang, I wanted to have another C, if anyone. Not this B.
Need I remind you of the cleaning I just did?!
Or when I said you can see the kitchen from the terminal/register?! She can see us packing up!!
Eventually I see my other coworker making hand gestures and mouthing for me to just appease her and take her order. By this point I am past my shift but I can't clock out, cause I couldn't bring myself to do that to the kitchen staff. So I bent. "Alright. What can I get for you?"
"Finally."
This woman proceeds to order at least one item from every portion of the menu. AFTER WE DEEP SCRUBBED AND DEEP CLEANED EVERYTHING!
Then, she leaves no tip, at all.
But it gets worse.
As I turn to help the kitchen staff and apologize, I see her take down chairs I had cleaned and put up from a table (for more than two, she took all the chairs down for that table. Which was one of our bigger tables). She then seats herself there, rather than any of the open bar seats that are not deep cleaned or put up.
I decided to stay and help the kitchen staff as an apology. At this point I have no idea where my co worker is.
I have to help the kitchen staff unpack nearly all the food and redirty nearly every area because of B's order.
Then I brought it out for her and she commented that "That took way too long" or "longer than it should have" and how I was "too slow at my job".
I then proceeded to watch her and her husband spread their trash out, not bother with cleaning spills.
My coworker then came up to me (from wherever he'd been) and apologized. He said I was good to go home now. And he would take care of cleaning the area Karen and her husband were, because I had already cleaned so much.
I didn't say it out loud, but in my head I was like: heck yeah! I cleaned practically everything from top to bottom and left to right! And then this?!
So I agreed. Clocking out, and apologizing to the kitchen staff about five more times.
I texted my mom I was done, and began to head out when I heard B/Karen/WhatsHerFace say "it's their job to clean it", turning I saw a spill.
I mentally pitied my coworker momentarily before letting it go. I had enough of this woman and I was going home for the holiday.
I had stayed an extra half hour to hour because of this woman.
I have never worked New Years again.
Service people (including me) deal with a lot of Karen/B people. Please be more like C. I would have rather served her a million more times, even after shift end time, than serve one more like customer B.
Was I an A-Hole for leaving before everyone else on staff? Or should I have stayed to help clean up after Customer B? Am I an A-Hole for anything in this story?

Hello,
I wanted to share a picture of my recent steak adventure and get some feedback from the steak aficionados out there. 🥩
Here's what I did:
  • 50/50 Salt/black pepper and took it out of the fridge 40 min to come up to room temp.
  • Preheated oven to 250°F and cooked steak until 120°F internal. This took about 30 min.
  • Heated a skillet with ghee as high as it would go and seared the steak on both sides for 2 minutes each.
  • Pushed the steak into the side fat cap for another minute to render out the fat.
  • Foil tent for 20ish minutes with a pat of butter on top
The result was pretty good, but the big piece of fat in the middle wasn't cooked to my liking. I usually do this on the smoker, but it was pouring rain and thunderstorms while I was making this one, so the kitchen had to suffice.
I'm wondering if anyone has any tips to enhance my steak-making process. What would you do differently? Any advice or feedback would be much appreciated. I love steak and always looking to improve!

It helps me control the doneness more precisely.
Reverse Sear: This method can be a bit more challenging for me. When I try to sear after the slow cook, I often deal with flare-ups, which makes it hard to sear exactly for 1 minute per side, and it’s more difficult to control the final temp.
For context, I always set up my Weber kettle with charcoal on one side to create a two-zone cooking area.

(First post) Prime NY Strip
For tonight’s dinner I cooked Two USDA prime New York strips for my dad and I. They were seasoned with a mixture of sea salt, black pepper, granulated garlic, and cayenne. I cooked them on a smoking hot cast iron with avocado oil for 2 minutes per side. Then butter basted with garlic. I let them rest for 6 minutes, then plated them with cheesy potatoes and carrots. Also, the butter drippings were drizzled over top of everything. The best part of all however, is that my dad loved it.
I found this subreddit earlier today, and knew I wanted to cook a steak to show y’all. Any constructive criticism? How is this for an introduction?
