Aggressive minicut while minimizing muscle loss
I started my lifting journey in October 2023. I was 176 lbs and managed to drop down to 143 lbs in 4 months. I looked like a skeleton back then with small muscle definition. I started to bulk in the second week of October.
Now I'm back to 172 lbs, I look much better compared to what I have started with but still managed to get fat because of my inexperience about the bulk. By the time I realized I've gone too far as far as my training goes, I've already got too fat. Roughly %25 body fat maybe a tad bit more.
What I want to do is to be able to increase my weights and reps. If I start to cut right now I probably would have to cut for 3-4 months straight to get the ideal body fat that I have in mind. But I don't want that.
I want to do an aggressive minicut which I can lower my body fat fast and going back to bulking as fast as possible. The problem is, I don't know how catastrophic that would be in terms of muscle loss.
I'm thinking about a 1000 cal deficit, my maintainance is around 2800-2900, I walk 7000 steps minimum per day, which would be like 2000 cals as a daily intake.
Will I lose significant amount of muscle mass with this approach? Should I keep bulking with dropping my calories, should I just commit to a cut or a minicut is a way to go? What's your opinion about this?

Data from the STEP 4 trial showed that treatment with once-weekly subcutaneous (SC) 2.4 mg dose of semaglutide resulted in statistically significant weight reductions compared with placebo.
Obesity is a chronic disease that requires long-term treatment and is associated with many serious health consequences and reduced life expectancy. There are many complications associated with obesity, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cancer.
Novo Nordisk is currently developing a once-weekly 2.4 mg subcutaneous formulation of semaglutide as a treatment for obesity in adults. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog that can help people eat less, reduce calorie intake, and induce weight loss by reducing hunger and increasing satiety.
The STEP program (Semaglutide in Obesity) is a global Phase IIIa clinical development program evaluating a once-weekly subcutaneous (SC) 2.4 mg dose of semaglutide for weight management in adults with obesity. The project includes a total of 4 phase IIIa trials, which have enrolled approximately 4,500 overweight or obese adults, and all trials have been successful.
Based on data from the STEP clinical project, Novo Nordisk submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) for semaglutide 2.4mg subcutaneous injection to the US FDA in December 2020. The drug is injected subcutaneously once a week for long-term weight management. It is worth mentioning that Novo Nordisk also submitted a Priority Review Voucher (PRV) to speed up the NDA review. This PRV can shorten the NDA review cycle from the standard 10 months to 6 months.
The indications applied for for semaglutide 2.4 mg subcutaneous injection preparation are: as an adjunct to a low-calorie diet and increased exercise, for the treatment of obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m2) accompanied by at least one body weight Adult patients with relevant comorbidities.
STEP 4 (withdrawal) was a 68-week, randomized, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled, withdrawal trial comparing semaglutide to placebo in 902 obese or overweight patients with comorbidities Efficacy and safety for sustained weight management. The trial includes a 20-week run-in period and a 48-week maintenance period. During the 20-week lead-in period, after receiving dose-escalating semaglutide treatment, 803 patients reached the target dose of 2.4 mg, and their average weight decreased from 107.2 kg to 96.1 kg. After that, these patients entered the maintenance phase and were randomly divided into 2 groups, one group received SC semaglutide 2.4 mg once a week, and the other group received SC placebo once a week for 48 weeks. Throughout the study, both treatment groups followed a regimen of low-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The trial used 2 statistical methods: (1) based on treatment strategy evaluation (primary statistical method), that is, without considering treatment compliance or the therapeutic effect of using other weight loss drugs; (2) based on trial product evaluation (secondary statistical method) ), that is, all patients adhere to the study drug treatment and do not use other weight loss drugs.
The results showed that the STEP 4 trial met the two primary endpoints, and the data had statistically significant differences, showing that patients who continued to receive SC semaglutide 2.4mg further lost weight significantly, while patients who switched to placebo significantly regained their weight.
——The main statistical method showed that among all randomized patients, those who continued to receive SC semaglutide 2.4 mg for 48 weeks continued to reduce the average body weight by 7.9% from the baseline at randomization (weight at the end of the run-in period); while those who received placebo For patients, mean weight increased by 6.9% from baseline at randomization. The treatment difference between the 2 groups was statistically significant. Patients who received once-weekly SC semaglutide for 68 weeks (20-week lead-in period + 48-week maintenance period) experienced an average weight loss of 17.4%.
——Secondary statistical methods showed that among intention-to-treat patients, patients who continued to receive SC semaglutide 2.4 mg for 48 weeks continued to reduce mean body weight by 8.8% from baseline at randomization (weight at the end of the run-in period); For placebo patients, mean weight increased by 6.5% from baseline at randomization. The treatment difference between the 2 groups was statistically significant. Patients who received weekly SC semaglutide for 68 weeks experienced an average weight loss of 18.2%.
In this trial, the safety profile of once-weekly subcutaneous injection of semaglutide 2.4 mg was consistent with that previously observed for GLP-1 receptor agonists and was well tolerated. The most common adverse events in patients treated with semaglutide 2.4 mg were gastrointestinal events.

My dog passed away this morning and the past week has been torturous on her. Today is friday and it all began exactly a week ago. I take her out every friday morning with a bunch of my friends and their dogs (all completely healthy and much older). She seemed fine that day, then saturday i noticed that she lost her appetite, eating nothing at all but still drinking water, and her bites became significantly stronger overnight with almost no control over her power. This kept going so the next day i took her to the vet. It was nothing severe so he gave her some medication as shown in the links. The next day she got worse and wont even drink water, he diagnosed her with a lung infection and said she most likely has a virus. We gave her some medicine to treat those problems but she never got better. So tuesday we started feeding her glucose through the veins throughout the day. Her breathing got so much worse and she had no energy to walk. We took a blood test and ran it through the cbc machine confirming its a virus, but was negative for all the viruses we tested for. Due to the countrys situation we couldnt get a chemistry test in time so we took her to the best vet in town. He said her lung situation is dire and that her lungs are barely functioning with most of it being stiff due to the infection. Bs as the day goes on he noticed signs that implicated neurological problems like extreme stress, aggression, and fear. Her eyes were also red with normal temperature and no fever. She slept wednesday night with me in the house so she stays warm. She got 0 sleep and couldnt walk around in a straight line anymore. She gets 2 minutes of sleep then wakes herself up because of how much she moves around in her sleep. But with all of this i could still sense that she was the same dog i knew. The next morning i took her to the vet and she completely changed, would barely let me hold on to her and even pet her. We gave her a pill (azymix) for the lung infection so she breaths better. A few hours go by and the nightmare starts. Uncontrollable movements as if shes seizing constantly for hours, harming herself to the point that all her nails were bleeding(not sure how since non of them were broken) and the bleeding wouldnt stop even after giving her the required medicine to slow down bleeding, and also chewing her own tongue out. The movement involved every body part of her, and her only way of moving around was to spin in circles and falling. The bleeding never stopped and we sedated her so she would stop freaking out. An hour later she was back to seizing and hurting herself. I put her in her house and padded up the walls so she doesnt hurt herself, this was at 2 am, i slept and came back at 6am and she was stiff. We were supposed to take her to israel this morning but we couldnt make it in time. I will attach videos of how she acted and list the symptoms she had.

Hey all, I’ve had IBS for over 20 years of my life and no specialists have been able to figure out what’s wrong with me and just put it down to IBS. I recently went to a new Dr and got tested twice for SIBO which was negative but then he also did the fecal elastase test which can back with a result of 56 which is severely low in the range. I have been prescribed Creon so will see how it goes. The thing I am confused with is I am overweight and can’t seem to lose weight no matter what. I have diarhoea basically everyday and go to the gym 5 days a week yet can’t lose a kg. I know one of the main symptoms of EPI is weight loss so am feeling ripped off 😂

My parents go thrifting a lot and find some pretty amazing random stuff. I’m never surprised. My mom sent me a box of costume jewelry that ran the gamut of your trendy designer to high end runway. In a dust bag I pulled out a surprisingly solid and heavy pearl necklace. They almost felt like steel. I thought they were unusual but I figured they were some J crew nice statement necklace, looked for a mark and found none. So I just put it back and kept looking.
The weight, the shine and the sheer size and temperature left an impression on me they were striking. I was certain they were faux and was going to prove they were glass.. But I didn’t see any loss of paint even at the drill holes. I looked at the shape of the induvidual pearls and they looked pretty jacked as far as shapes and angles. They were very natural looking. And also very big. I measured with my caliper and they seemed to range from drill hole to drill hole 16 mm - 22 mm. And measured width from 14 mm to 18mm, the necklace was 76 cm around.
Now I’m thinking could these be natural baroque pearls ? Possibly South Sea ? They’re very white with areas appearing striated even tiny areas of red pink. Not sure on weight.

i (f19) went from 225 (5’8’’) last year to now being 203. i’m slowly, but steadily, losing weight. it’s not a big change, but im still working to meet my goal! for some added context, i dont eat the healthiest, due to living with my parents and not having control over groceries, but i try to eat as clean as possible. for example ive taken soda and cheese out of my diet, and started snacking way less. also i strictly drink water with the occasional sweet tea at restaurants. i also usually eat one large meal around dinner time and often eat a small dessert like an ice cream or a few cookies. im slowly weening off beef and trying to eat a lot more chicken. lastly, i dont workout, but i do own a treadmill and try to walk at least 30 mins every weekday. im looking for advice for anything weight loss related! also i’m especially seeking out how to shrink my double chin. i’ve recently noticed myself thinning out but my double chin has been a really stubborn and i see no progress.

I’m no psychologist so maybe I’m using those terms wrong, but my inner thoughts and feelings can be so fucked up in regards to societal norms.
I’ve also never said any of this out loud and likely never will. I’ve been to therapists for other reasons.. it would take Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men to get this out of me.
I do not act on most of these thoughts. If you asked the people around me, they would likely praise me as empathetic, kind, and willing to go far out of their way to help. I only do these things because that’s how I’m supposed to act. I actually think I over compensate for it to be honest.
The truth is, I genuinely do not care about anybody that does not benefit me in some way. My friends and family bring me entertainment and support, so I do “care” about them, but I don’t think it’s the same way that other people do. If something bad happens to them I do feel emotion, but it’s more an emotion of personal loss than anything else. I don’t have a problem cutting people out of my life and I never have.
If you are a stranger and cannot benefit me in any way, I truly do not care about you. I know how I’m supposed to react though, so I react that way by mentally attaching myself to that person.
If somebody had someone close to them die, I pretend my mom died so I can produce the reaction that is expected. >! I learned that one in middle school when a young girl committed suicide and because I didn’t know her, I genuinely didn’t care.!<. I didn’t even care enough to listen to our teacher finish his speech. Instead I checked my flip phone and saw a funny text from a friend. I chuckled and never really lived that one down. I feel regret from that, but it is out of embarrassment for myself. I know I am supposed to care, I just don’t.
I always have this overwhelming urge to manipulate people when the opportunity comes up. I am very good at it. I don’t act on it. I know that people outside a relationship can see when somebody is being manipulated quite clearly and I do not want to be attached to that stigma. I don’t want to be like this, but the urge and the how to is in my head.
I am probably one of the most judgmental people on this planet. I noticed at the gym recently that I was silently shitting on a guy that was having trouble lifting what I considered a small amount of weight. Somebody else was too fat, another looked like a leather couch trying to be 20 years younger than they were while looking 10 years older. The crazy thing is, I’m not even close to the strongest, best looking, or most fit person there. No wonder I was scared of starting in the gym all those years ago, people like me are the problem.
When it comes to romantic relationships it almost gets worse. I think I feel love, but I’ve proven in the past that it’s conditional. Maybe it’s just infatuation. I “fall” fast and unintentionally love bomb them before I get bored and either throw them away or in the case of my last relationship, sleep around until I get caught. When I got caught I just ended it. I apologized, and begged for forgiveness and made excuses and then said I can’t stay because of my guilt. That’s not true. I won’t stay because it would be way too much work to have a decent relationship with them now and I stopped caring when I started cheating. I don’t even really feel guilt from that. Just embarrassment because of the people they told.
I care so much about my image and it’s not in the way a typical Hollywood psychopath does. I don’t have a 13 step skin routine or anything like that. I have built this facade of being approachable, kind and trustworthy. It’s like there’s something inside that really wants to be a good person, but my brain won’t let me get there. I am the only important person in this world. I try and be normal by attaching people to me emotionally so I can pretend to be empathetic to them. It’s just so fucking backwards.
I am the MC and nobody else matters. I have plot armor. When I die, the show is over. It’s an incredibly selfish way of looking at things, at least I can recognize that.
The absolute bonkers thing about this is sometimes I think that if I did act on these thoughts, if I manipulated and lied my way into what I want, if I told people what I thought of them, if I stopped going out of my way to help, I would grow numb to my image and genuinely feel happy.
Unfortunately for every short story I wrote, there are dozens more. I don’t want to be this way. I want to do good things because they make me feel good, not because they help my image or because I feel like I’m supposed to. I want to feel true empathy for my fellow beings. I want to feel dive in front of a bullet unconditional love for someone. I just think an irreplaceable fuse burnt out somewhere a long time ago.

Has anyone tried similar schedules ? I am fasting for weight loss, so I wonder how much benefit three 24 hour fasts will do me. I always still eat and track 1200 calories (-500 sedentary TDEE) on days I’m doing OMAD. I’m learning mostly from this page and can see myself sticking to a fasting routine after weight loss but not as intense. Theres so much nutrition to learn about throughout this process. I’m unsure if any of this will hurt my body in the long run or if I’m going about weight loss in an unhealthy way. Thanks in advance for any advice …

Hey there!
I (25f) did my initial OB labs several weeks ago at 10ish weeks and my blood sugar came back at 5.6 (without fasting). This was considered normal according to my results given to me by my OB on MyChart.
Then, two weeks later, I had my first OB appointment and was handed off to a midwifery student instead of a fully graduated/certified midwife or OB. I didn’t see any problem with this and thought she was nice.
Where I get confused is she told me that it’s likely I’ll have gestational diabetes and that I should start to diet now. This was a curveball. Yes, I have a high BMI (not morbidly obese but I’m short and wide, no doubt) but was told before this that my weight would not be an issue and that I was young and healthy. I had also read up about gestational diabetes beforehand and everything I read explained that anyone could get gestational diabetes regardless of weight and that it was overall decided by the placenta. This was not the vibe I had gotten from the midwife student.

I think I’m highly sensitive to this issue because of my past history of disordered eating (extreme fasting and forcefully puking after meals from ages 14 to 22). I’m trying not to let past issues cloud my judgment now because more than anything I was a healthy baby… which is why I’m doing everything to prevent getting gestational diabetes and dieting/carb counting like the midwife student suggested. I’ve been obsessively stressing and counting carbs since that appointment, even though everything I’ve read seems to point to this not mattering. I’m at a loss.
I know carb counting won’t hurt the baby and eating healthier won’t harm anything… but I’m miserable. Im having an awful time with morning sickness and hardly keep down the food I do eat and am constantly nauseated. When I do have a pregnancy craving, I resist it because usually it’ll be too many carbs/sugars for someone that might have GD. I just want to do what’s best for my baby and I’m stressing out big time.
I guess basically what I’m asking is…
My ASD is making me hyper-focus on this so any answers, advice, or anecdotes are much appreciated. I want all the information lol. Thank you!

I keep thinking about my experience in academia (Ph.D. and postdoc), an unsuccessful attempt to escape and how I dug my grave with my own hands.
I keep reading about recent developments in US biotech industry and its has been absolutely disheartening. The job market right now is awful and it has not bottomed out.
I cannot help, but thinking how did I arrive at this point and what could I have done to save myself???
I am speaking here about my experience in life sciences. I hope that the situation is better in other areas, but life sciences are absolutely over-saturated, over-flowing and under-paid area of STEM, probably along with chemistry.
Long time ago, after 1 year into the Ph.D. program, I got a weird feeling. I quietly approached people in the lab, with whom I was on friendly terms and they confirmed my worst expectations. Essentially, the unspoken (and un-communicated!!!) assumption was that after a year or so a Ph.D. student should show to the PI outstanding results, worthy of publication in "Nature", "Science" etc. Obviously, with no help, no guidance, no support. The PI did not want to tarnish his academic CV with publications in low- or medium-impact journals! So, if you could not show a potential for a publication in "Nature" (or similar journal), the PI would simply lose interest in you and "dis-own" you. This meant no support of any kind, no interest in your defense and no recommendation letter. Nothing! I saw this done to several people in our group. The PI tried (in some cases very successfully) to sabotage careers of his subordinates.
Remainder of my Ph.D. was absolute mental torture. I knew that without support of the PI I had not a single chance for academic career. Basically, academic career was dead for me. Every day I experienced a mental torture of senseless work. I knew that it was absolutely pointless to continue my Ph.D. The project was going nowhere. The PI lost all interest. By then I knew very well, how competitive and cutthroat was academia. I could have just sat in my office, collected stipend for another year or more and walked away. There was no point of doing anything. It was like digging a hole in the ground and then filling it back with same soil. Again and again and again! Every day! Coming to the lab, doing senseless work, knowing that it was all meaningless and continue doing it over and over -- just to have something to put in the thesis. This experience crippled me to the point that now I absolutely cannot stand any meaningless work.
I defended my Ph.D. and somehow got a postdoc in a shitty lab. 3 years of my postdoctoral experience could be described by one word: abuse! Constant lies, gaslighting, micromanagement, disrespect, threats, being underpaid, being overworked. I clearly remember that I cried because I did not have a courage to commit suicide.
I tried to seek on-line, on various forums advice on how to get out of this situation. To put it short, I was "trolled" and bullied by academics to the point of mental meltdown.
Recently I tried to find a career coach / mentor. Needless to say, my search was unsuccessful. There is no help out there! Sure, there are people that gladly will take your money in return to sugarcoated fluff. But that's it!
I have been thinking a lot about career coaching / career guidance. You know what? Absence of good advice / a lot of bad advice was, probably, a final "death blow" to my aspirations.
First of all, I did not understand how hiring works and no one explained it to me. It is not that there is a great mystery about hiring, it is that no one ever explained it to me. Secondly, I falsely believed that I could capitalize on Ph.D. itself and a set of so called "transferable skills". Lie! No one hires based on transferrable skills! Transferable skills == soft skills. If you have only transferable skills = soft skills, you can get a job of an admin assistant. Because you need good communication skills and critical thinking when scheduling meetings and taking minutes. But! If you have transferable skills and a Ph.D., you will NOT get a job of admin assistant, because you are "over-qualified".
I always knew that my Ph.D. in molecular biology was completely worthless! Yes, I had to learn every single method and protocol myself, without any help! Yes, I worked 60 hr and 80 hr weeks. But you cannot put this on resume and hope that HR will value it. Even today, years after I completed my Ph.D., I can explain every single methods and every single experiment that I did. Because I did everything on my own, without any help!!! I should be proud of myself, but I actually hate myself -- because I cannot sell it. Because market values "rock-stars", because market values what's trendy and what's in demand!
I was led astray by all this trash advice about "customizing your resume" and "highlighting transferrable skills". I have missed an opportunity of a lifetime!!! 5 or 6 years ago people, who attended coding bootcamps, could actually get a job as a programmer!!! Yes, not too long ago employers were actually scooping people, who completed coding bootcamps!!! That would have been my chance of getting the hell out of academia. I had a gut feeling that my Ph.D. was a complete waste of time, I suspected that I need to write-off Ph.D. as a loss and re-educate myself completely to have a chance! And I have missed an opportunity of a lifetime to learn how to code, to get into bootcamp, to get an entry-level coding job and move on from there. Now there are ongoing layoffs in tech and job market is flooded with junior coders. The gates are closed.
Instead, I wasted my time tinkering / customizing my resume and thinking how to sell "transferrable skills". Wrong, wrong, wrong! I do not think that anything like it will ever come again. When you can teach yourself, when you can get through the bootcamp and get into a field with good pay and career growth!!!
To all people out there: I cannot stress enough, watch out for bad advice!!! Look for a good advice -- its worth it's weight in gold!

Hi all!
In October a patient of mine I hadn't seen for a long time (I'm a nurse) said I had gained so much weight since she last saw me. As I have pcos and I know this contributes to weight gain I looked up a pcos sub on Reddit and stumbled across insulin resistance. I immediately made an appointment for blood checkup and it turned out I was on the verge of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.
Then I became a member of this sub and began my weight loss journey...
I've started eating low carb (usually less than 40g/day) in October at 84kg but didn't use the app shown in the picture yet so it shows an already lower starting weight. Over the next months I've steadily been losing weight without any real plateau as you can see. At the beginning I ate around 1500kcal and now this has slowly been adjusted to 1350kcal. On the days I go to work or walk I add the burned calories (usually around 200kcal for work and 150 for a 30min walk). Today I checked in at 65kg, which means a weight loss of 19kg over the course of 7 months.
I don't exercise really except the occasional walk, my 3 days a week gentle 20min yoga and 3 days a week 10min arm and shoulder muscle training with resistance bands. So no real cardio actually.
Since the start I've been using inositol (the mixed version), praised for its effect on insulin resistance and therefore other pcos related problems.
At the moment I'm already below my initial goal weight of 67kg but I still have some stubborn belly fat that I hope will go away if I manage to reach my new weight goal of 58kg. My belly is actually the only place where I've got some decent amount of fat left. I know it's typical with insulin resistance so I hope this will eventually go away too.

Hello everyone! I am dealing with some (to my experience) extreme weightloss. I’ve had TN for 1,5 year now. First I lost weight because I lost appetite and taste due to being in pain and chewing triggering it (I have TN 1 and 2 in de V1 branch). Then I thought the double anti seizure meds in highest dosage (Oxacarbazepine 1200mg and pregabelin 300mg) was causing my loss of appetite and weightloss. Now I’ve had my MVD in February, I’m 75% pain free, so enough to function and enough to taper down on my meds to half of what I was taking. My appetite is medium, I also have ADD so I often choose to get distracted by something else than eating lol. I’m now actively trying to eat more (healthy always). But I’m still losing weight. It could be my body is still healing, it took me 2 full months to be back on my feet after surgery and I didn’t eat or sleep the first 3 nights. I am 174cm (5,85ft) and went from 78kg/171,96lbs to 66kg/145,5lbs. Anyone else experiencing this and how did you start picking up weight again?

I lost a little over a year ago, may 1st 2023. i am a really reflective person and im open about sharing my feelings and strugggles on grief on my socials because you never know, someone could relate or feel less alone if theyre going thru it too.
i had a small argument w my good friend who knows what ive gone through and how i feel about my moms loss. basically i got the ick from her after our argument and i went from texting her 24/7 to only texting her if she texts me..im just not feeling 100% w her.
ANYWAY, mothers day came around and my friends mom came up to visit her from LA (we are in sf). i havent texted my friend much cus like i said, not feeling it too much, but shes fishing for our friendship again. she texted me a couple days after how she is feeling sad alll morning and ofc i had to ask why. she said: “hormones probably. sad i gained weight, sad ab our argument, sad my mom is going home and how finite our time is together ”
idk that just bothered me that she said that, and i understand why she might. bc she knowws what ive been thru. but it felt like a kick in the face and iknow theres no ill intent, but it made me jealous that she HAS the time w her mom. she can choose to visit her mom more. its just not fair. shes older than me and still has her mom. i didnt even want to respond or comfort her, but all i could say was “im glad u got to spend time w her!” even tho i wanted to say so much more about how im sad ALL THE TIME about not having time w my mom. i was just annoyed. i hated hearing her tell my other how she got to spend her days w her mom-a nice hike, dinner, her mom spoiling her w a LV gift.
ughhh i miss my mom.

I'm not surprised because honestly it did sound too good to be true. But I had lemon bottle done at a professional clinic for £100 and it's been a week and I've seen no change. I've been as active as I can in the confines of work, I've drank up to 2L water per day or as much as I can, I've done my aggressive massaging of the area multiple times a day. None of which by the way they told me to do as aftercare, I just gathered online through research that it all helps the loss.
All of these online videos are very misleading - I didn't expect an instant skinny jaw but I expected at least some weight budging by now. I'm also a little upset at paying so much for a procedure that costs much less online and that I don't feel has done anything. I'm not a big lady, but I have a little stubborn 'turkey neck' which is genetic to my family. Has never gone away even when I was underweight growing up and was always made fun of.
My job actually works with needles so I feel like I have some of the safety knowledge and capabilities to administer further lemon bottle myself. Has anyone had experience with this? Did a second round finally show results? Perhaps I'm not giving it long enough to notice results on this first round.
