2024.05.17 13:42 SureHopeIDontDie Any tips for cooking better in a cast iron pan ?

I started using a cast iron pan a few months ago, and although I don't have an oven, I think I managed to season it somewhat properly. Thing is, I think I suck at cooking with it.
I love making grilled stuff, like rice, pastas, veggies and such. However, very often it sticks a lot, and ends up being really hard to cook and not so good in cast-iron. A few times I've gotten miraculously good non-stick, though I wouldn't be able to tell what caused it.
What are tips you guys have when learning how to cook in cast iron ?

2024.05.17 13:39 ForealCB Jenn Air locking door frantically

I have a Jenn Air model #sve47100w that gifted to me by a family member, it was used but had no problems. It started cutting off randomly when we would try to use the oven, opening and shutting the door seemed to trigger it coming on and off. Problem disappeared as soon as it came. Now it is frantically locking and unlocking the door at random times, middle of the night, middle of cooking, doesn’t matter. It has been unplugged for about a day now in fear something would short or cause a fire, what should I look at to find the problem? I don’t know much about ranges but I am mechanically inclined and familiar with electrical work

Hello!
I am looking for a person with whom we can connect with and build a relationship together. Befriend each other from the start, spend time together, have new experiences, be it new to both or teach each other different things. Nerd out about stuff we like, support each other and slowly build our own world. The end goal that I envision and would love to achieve is just some basic, yet, intimate moments, that I believe both would enjoy, like:
There's more of course, but generally moments like these are the end goal. In short. the end goal is a romantic lifelong relationship.
About hobbies, I have a lot of hobbies and interests. My main hobbies would be working out, I'm a gym rat, I love working out. Gaming, I enjoy playing video games, board games, just games in general during my free time. Watching videos, streams, shows, movies, anime. I watch Youtube daily. a lot of different stuff. I enjoy watching true crime, like JCS, cam footage, documentaries and etc., games, reviews, news, memes and honestly, pretty much everything, mostly just go off of recommended or something I was waiting for. Besides videos, I mainly watch anime. I love all kinds. TV shows and movies not that much, due to either watching alone is not that interesting, or already watched everything I liked and no new parts, seasons, episodes came out yet. I enjoy listening to music, my taste is all over the place, genre doesn't really matter, I just have to like the song, I also like writing, started writing a story some time back and still in the process of combining all the elements, though it's a very slow process due to time and how much actually gets invested into that. And generally I am artsy, I enjoy imagining and creating. There are more interests, like learning languages for example, or drawing maybe, but they are something I do from time to time maybe, or during different moods, but these are mostly my main hobbies that I do day to day.
My main values are communication and effort. I believe anything can be achieved if both parties put the same amount of effort towards each other. That's how a true relationship will be built. In my eyes, communication is key to everything. I am a non-judgemental person, and always want and willing to talk everything through, so every opinion is heard, every view is understood and both parties are satisfied. Without clear and well communication, everything will just fall apart piece by piece, especially if the communication and effort is one sided.

2024.05.17 12:54 Ok-Mortgage-4624 Experience working as a fast food worker

My experience working at grilled:
-Got screamed at work by my assistant managers for accidently brushing my hand slightly on the egg pan. It caused me no small burns or whatsoever, but I got yelled at in my face in front of everyone. (and for the rest of my shift I (failed) trying to stop crying. He did not apologise for this. All I got was a talk after work and I felt like he was just trying to save face.
-During this talk he told me off for taking 15 minutes to find the imposs patties (when I was trying to calm myself down in the cool room because he yelled at me). He then later told me I had 48 hours to complete all my online training modules when I had school to do as well.
-being threatened with being fired if I had ever hurt myself again.
-I don’t feel comfortable working with others, I feel like I’m being watched. I realised anything I tell one team member something, my assistant managers would somehow know about it too (when they accidently slip it out). I feel like personal conversations is being passed down (from team members to higher ups)
-The reason I hurt myself in the first place (in one morning) is because I was careless, but I felt I was being rushed leading to me being careless. Every time my assistant manager would walk upstairs, he would say “has everything be done now?”. When I was only halfway and trying my best to finish.
-I am aware I’m bad at communicating, me being neurodivergent I have trouble processing information (aka taking orders) and realising when someone is calling to me. So I believe I was not a great fit for this fast-paced job. I opened this to my assistant manager, but he wanted to “fix the problem first”, but I don’t think there was a way to fix this.
-In the one week I was told i was "performing badly", I was given 4-night shifts in a row, whilst I had school in the morning, so I couldn’t keep up and was consequently exhausted. From this my assistant managers reported me to the head manager, although I knew I was underperforming a lot, I felt annoyed with this.
-I don’t simply get along with the assistant managers. One time I got nagged for cooking the beef when it was slightly falling apart (it was already falling apart when it was uncooked from the container), and was told, “how would you feel if you were given a broken burger, I would you feel if I broke you huh? Etc”. Like sir im not some Michelin star chef, I didn’t do this on purpose, im just some broke student being paid $16 an hour.
-I feel like there’s a lot of blaming, I felt like I was being blamed a lot for thing not entirely my fault, aka, not dropping some the meat down on Mondays but when there was already a lot of meat cooked but the people on dress was lagging. so I thought it would be better to cook meat later so they would be hotter later.
-My social anxiety is getting worse, I feel anxiety just entering the store to work.
-Overall, I’ve been told constantly that I am not performing up to standards. (I’ve been slow, etc). I’m trying my best, but I don’t know what else can do, I believe for both parties it would be best if I left my position. However, the grilled store are already understaffed, this is why I’m not being let go (yet).
-Btw I’ve been offered a position here even though they haven’t ever met/talked to me before. (I didn’t attend the interview because I read my boss’s message too late). (edited)

2024.05.17 12:22 -cosmicglitter Dog Weight Maintenance

Hello everyone! I've tried to keep this post as organized as possible, I am sorry if it is too much or too little and am happy to correct it as needed.
I am concerned about the upward trajectory of my dogs weight and am looking for advice on what more we can adjust to keep him healthy!
Species: Dog
Age: 6
Sex/Neuter status: Chemical castration in March 2024 ( decision for aggression issues after adopting him and trying to train his behavior for ~2 years )
Breed: Not fully known, his previous family thought havanese/chinese crested mix, we think maybe maltese mix of some kind.
Body weight: 7kg
History: Before chemical castration it was difficult to keep him on a regular food schedule, he was picky but he maintained a healthy approved weight ranging from 6 to 6.5kg - vet was happy with this weight. At the time of his castration, he was 6.3kg - this was maintained across about 2 or 3 weeks at the time and is a good representation of his usual weight. After chemical castration, his focus on food skyrocketed so that he began to gobble down each meal - we broke his meals into smaller parts and began measuring more exactly, starting with 35g per meal. He now eats four small scheduled meals a day, using a puzzle feeder to slow him down.
Clinical signs: Idk if this is a clinical sign but I'll put this here. His weight has been slowly climbing. He is now 7kg, and his waist line is filling out and his ribs are less easy to feel.
Duration: 3 months
Your general location: Norway
Additional Info:
Side view: https://i.imgur.com/iaPdgvD.jpeg
Top view: https://i.imgur.com/4Kgm7do.png
Cute view: https://i.imgur.com/vnWOsap.jpeg
His fur is a little longer than we usually keep it now, too, so I'm not fully relying on visual indicators in noticing his weight gain this month.

2024.05.17 11:46 Torpedopocalypse Most Overrated Spots in Btown?

What places do you think are way overrated in Btown? Hot takes welcome.
Here are my 2 biggest ones:
Janko's: Steaks have barely any flavor and are almost never cooked properly. My steak is always overcooked or undercooked. Prices are ridiculous for the quality. The tables are so cramped it's insane. Service is ALWAYS slow. One small bathroom for the whole restaurant. I've been 20 or so times because friends and family love it, but I'd rather just go to Longhorn.
The Cade: So boring. Their selection of arcade games is pretty sad. Most of their actual game cabinets are in poor condition. Their N64s are a joke. They work sometimes, and even if you get a console that works, you'll have to ask for 10 different controllers to find 2 that actually work.

the pain of not being able to express your whole self
not being able to do what your soul craves

2024.05.17 11:23 Dull_Appointment_252 Fall apart/super tough beef cheeks?

I cooked some beef cheeks recently. Bought 4, didn’t realise how massive they actually are as I’ve never cooked them before. I left 2 as they are and cut the other 2 in half. Cooked in a Dutch oven, in the oven, for 4 hours on 150°c (as in seared, taken out, veggies/wine/stock and then cheeks back in, took them out after 4 hours and blended the liquid and put on stove to reduce then added meat back in on low heat to keep warm until served). I had a friend over for dinner and we both had the uncut cheeks - my friends was falling apart with a spoon while mine was so tough I was struggling with a knife and fork.
I noticed when shredding the remains 2 that had been cut in half, 2 were falling apart tender and the others were also super tough - requiring a knife and fork to shred.
Did I screw up the cooking somehow or was it just a case of tough cheeks? All bought from an excellent butcher I’ve never had issues with before.

2024.05.17 11:20 aligooze Starting IF while deployed: slow progress

I had never given IF too much thought before, until I saw my SIL go through a big transformation and lose about 50/60 pounds over about a year period. So proud of her! I asked her what she did and she said IF, so I (37F, Active Duty military) decided that I would give that a try while Im deployed. Nothing else was working.
I have maintained a certain weight very consistently my entire life (135-137lbs). Only since I turned 35, I started noticing the weight creeping up on me. Over the course of about 3 year my weight climbed to 163. This is the heaviest I have ever been. Not that I hate my body. Even at 163, I have a nice shape as I still consistently workout, But I’m more uncomfortable and don’t feel very good. I joined this subreddit and read some books and I felt inspired. I felt hope!
It’s been a month of IF, and I have fluctuated between losing 3-5 lbs. I do the 16/8, as I’m a newbie who loves breakfast and I didn’t want to make myself so miserable that I quit. So I have been doing two meals, no snacking between meals (or trying not to), and avoiding sugar. I’m lifting, doing Pilates, and I try to walk a lot, and do Latin dancing twice a week.
My progress has been SOOO slow. Or at least it feels that way. The good thing about going this deployed is that I don’t have to cook, buy groceries etc. but the downside is I’m beholden to what they’re serving and the quality isn’t always there. Has anyone ever done IF while deployed and seen results? I still have quite a bit of time in my location and I really want to go home with a new body.
Any tips and tricks are welcome! Sorry for the long post!

2024.05.17 10:13 Ivypearl Took my dog to the best veterinary hospital in our area, they missed her severely advanced dental disease…. twice….

I took my 9 yr old lab Ivy to the vet for an emergency visit in the beginning of March. Our regular vet couldn’t take her so we had to go to the 24/7 animal hospital. They are excellent and I was willing to pay for whatever they needed to do to help ivy.
She had been very obviously sick and in pain, puking, diarrhea, not wanting to eat. They did an ultrasound, blood panel, urinalysis, fluids, meds. They found elevated liver enzymes and ketones in her urine. She was so sick they wanted to hospitalize her overnight. I asked what they would be doing and they said monitoring. I asked if I could just monitor her myself at home and bring her back right away if she gets worse? They gave me a couple prescriptions and sent us home. -$1729
I didn’t realize until the next day they didn’t give us any pain meds or anything to help Ivy’s eating (I’d tried seriously all the bland diet options, she didn’t want any of it) I went back to get her pain meds and prescription food, and the girl says they forgot to charge me for something else so she added that on too. -$150
Ivy was getting better slowly but still not her normal happy self at all. Sad, droopy eyes, wanting to sit curled up in my lap like a baby 😭 I kept doing everything they said and I took her back about a month later to check her levels again. We saw the vet, then went back out to the busy lobby to wait until someone came out to tell me the results or medications or whatever. So I sat in the lobby and waited, I asked a few times for updates bc I needed to get back to work. After 3 hours I asked if they could check and see what was going on.
There was another dog named Ivy there that morning and the receptionist closed out MY Ivy’s account (and charged the other lady’s card -$566 of my charges). I was annoyed and paid my bill (non-itemized invoice bc she couldn’t find mine) and Ivy and I went straight to work. Ivy is my service dog and sleeps under my desk.
They said the liver enzymes and urine ketone levels were both back to a normal level which was great news. They still couldn’t really give me a clear answer as to what could’ve caused all of this, sometimes they eat things, or just get sick, whatever. She said a slow recovery was normal bc livepancreas stuff is unpredictable, painful, and can take a while to heal.
The hospital’s office called me the next day to apologize for making me wait so long and reimbursed $316 (the liver panel, I think, I don’t have an itemized invoice). They offered this without me asking which I really appreciated.
Ivy has still been sick, but definitely better than when I first took her in. She was still acting sad, no interest in her favorite things. I knew she was in pain and brought her to a different vet last week.
Dr.S had been Ivy’s vet most of her life at our regular vet’s office - we love him. He left and started his own practice, and I just found his new location is 15 minutes away from my house!! It was kind of secretive when he left the other place, I think out of respect for the owners and not take half the clients with him. Anyway, I was really happy to find him again, I fully trust him. He was Ivy’s vet at her 8-week old visit, did her spay, all of it. Ivy is scared of men she doesn’t know and she loves Dr. S.
He took a look in her mouth and was like Whoa! Found it! He saw one badly rotten and cracked tooth in the back and wanted to get scheduled for removal right away. I bought the senior wellness plan for -$998. I was quoted $1200-1600 for surgery. (He was also going to remove a large benign mass from her side since she’d be under anesthesia already, I’d been wanting to do this for a few years so this is something I wanted him to do also)
This Tuesday was surgery day. He ended up removing 3 teeth, a molar on each side, and a front tooth that was cracked and broken off (I knew about this, I’d been told it wasn’t anything to be concerned about).
He said one of the molars and the front tooth both had exposed roots, the back one had an abscess and the root was touching the bone. He asked if I wanted the pictures bc it was really interesting and you don’t usually see it so advanced 😞 He said this is definitely what has been hurting her and making it hard to eat. He said they must have not looked in Ivy's mouth at all if they didn’t notice it- twice??
He didn’t have enough time to remove the mass. He said he wasn’t comfortable keeping her under any longer due to her age and blood pressure levels. Unless it grows rapidly we’re leaving it for now.
-$350 for everything this day, including surgery time & anesthesia, full dental cleaning & sealant, office visit, sedated nail trim, medications, canned soft food, heart worm testing, some other stuff included with the senior wellness package.
It’s been two days since she got her teeth out and she’s already smiling again. She was jumping around and trying to play with her brother (cat) and she only does that when she’s really excited!! Ivy is the best dog I could ever ask for. Seeing her in pain has been so hard, because I couldn’t help her!! I was trying everything but it wasn’t working. I’m so glad we found it and I think she will be able to get better now. I wasn’t so sure for awhile there.
I called the hospital place and told them what I found out and asked what happened. How could they have missed this- TWICE? The girl was really nice and agreed this was a “very valid concern” and asked me to explain everything to her and she would talk to the medical director, try to get some answers for me, and get back to me. She asked what I wanted the resolution to be. I said I thought it would be appropriate to ask for all of my charges to be refunded in relation to this event over the past couple months including Dr. S’s charges.
She called me back when I was at dinner so I missed her call.
Is this right? I don’t know what I’m looking for, feedback, reassurance, guidance? This is malpractice, right??
I talked to Dr.S’s receptionist today, she’s going to send me the photos and a breakdown of charges between the wellness plan and what I had done, try to make sense of what would be appropriate to ask them to refund. I kinda also want to ask them for $200 flat to reimburse the food/groceries spent trying to get her to eat, literally anything I could try on her bland diet, I tried! I don’t have receipts but I know I spent a shit ton of money as Ivy’s short order cook the last couple months. (Today she scarfed down her regular food for the first time in forever, I cried). Is this pushing it too far? Should I just take whatever they offer me?
What about the fact Ivy spent 2 1/2 months in pain & suffering from the time I brought her in to the day Dr. S did her surgery? She has lost weight, and has been pretty obviously miserable the whole time.
Thanks for reading.
