Pointless Restrictions on Working Software

2014.09.19 08:45 SanityInAnarchy Pointless Restrictions on Working Software

A hall of shame for software which is arbitrarily restricted in places it would otherwise function perfectly well. Named after the bad old days of websites that "Work Best In" a particular version of a particular web browser, and would sometimes deliberately block any other browsers.

2024.05.15 03:08 vsv38 Calibre and DeDRM plugin. Cannot find Adobekey.py

I'm trying to use this plugin for the first time. FYI, I'm using the latest version of Calibre 7.10, and DeDRM 10.0.3. Can someone please explain what this Adobekey.py is that's needed? How do I retrieve it from Adobe Digital Editions? There's no option with this plugin to log on to ADE. You can do that with DeACSM plugin.
I'm unable to remove DRM from an ebook I bought (epub). The debug log says:
DeDRM v10.0.3: Looking for new default Adobe Digital Editions Keys after 0.1 seconds DeDRM v10.0.3: Exception when getting default Adobe Key after 0.1 seconds Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\Net\Desktop\Calibre Portable\Calibre Settings\plugins\DeDRM.zip\adobekey.py", line 343, in adeptkeys FileNotFoundError: [WinError 2] The system cannot find the file specified.
Thanks!

2024.05.14 17:54 CoolyFulgore69420 Hi-Fi Rush needs to be Cracked Fast. Game will be removed from online stores. Don't let this game be Gone Forever.

Ever since Microsoft shut down Tango (and others game studios such as Arkane), the game has Licensed music and games with licensed music copyright always expire and when that copyright expires, the game will be pulled from online stores. The only way to avoid this is for the devs to remove the licensed music from the game. But Microsoft is braindead since they fired all the devs who can remove the music from the game. This is why piracy is justified in today’s age. Game preservation. “But the game has Denuvo DRM”, Denuvo DRM isn’t invincible, its capable of being cracked. Deus Ex Mankind Divided still has Denuvo and Resident Evil 8: Village had denuvo DRM at the time and both games got cracked. If those games can get cracked, so can Hi-Fi Rush. Fuck DRM and Fuck Microsoft!

2024.05.14 12:29 TubguinAce Categories Disappeared From Desktop Mode

I was adding one of my DRM free games to Steam through Desktop Mode when I realized all my categories (which are named after emulated consoles) are gone except for the PC category, which only had a couple of games in it I installed through Heroic Games Launcher. I went back to gaming mode and all my categories are still there, fully functional, although many games I had in the "PC" category were removed including the DRM free game I had just added, I went back to desktop mode again but the categories are still gone there and the DRM free game I added when I realized this is happening is now gone.
I have no clue what's going on or how to fix this, if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate the help.

2024.05.13 20:18 Longjumping-Peanut14 FORCE (!) a volume to be readwrite

Hey
My Syno constantly mounts one of my two volumes readonly. I tried to set iit to readwrite via the GUI but it doesnt let me. it says it couldnt set it to readwrite.
Synology support is not helping. they said I should recreate the volume after removing it and installing new disks. I know that this would work. but this is not what i want to achieve.
I want to continue to use the storage volume - dont care fi it fails or completely dies - is there any way to force my NAS to continue to mount the volume readwrite?
I am completely aware of potential data loss of that volume - still want to force iti to mount rw.
Any idea?

2024.05.13 18:48 BeardiusMaximus7 War for Cybertron on Amazon?

I understand there was a licensing issue with Activision that led to this game and the rest of its trilogy being removed from Steam a year or longer ago.
I just saw the digital code to redeem the game is for sale on Amazon US.
My question is - is that code to be redeemed via Steam or just direct from Activision... or through Amazon Games... or what? If I wanted to get this game to play on my Steam Deck, is this a viable way to accomplish that since it's no longer available directly through Steam?
EDIT: I looked closer at the listing for this game and also Fall of Cybertron, both say "DRM - Steam" sooooo I guess it'd work? Still feels kind of risky since they're going for $50 each, though.

2024.05.13 16:26 maxawake Wayland is NOT ready

Dear fellow Linux enthusiasts,
EDIT: Wayland+Nvidia is NOT ready. Also, i chose a provocative title and wording intentionally. I want to discuss with you guys and it seems to have worked :) There is much work to be done, especially on Nvidias side. Maybe some nvidia developer stumbles across this post and works extra hard, who knows.
Listen... I really love technological progression, and i want to use the most recent features available for my computer. Therefore i fell in love with the philosophy of Arch Linux. I studied computer science, so my computer really is my daily workhorse and i don't care if my setup breaks from time to time, because in 99% of the cases i can figure out how to solve it.. But also in private, i was able to do adapt all my workflows to Linux.
My research focuses on scientific visualization and machine learning. Both of which are usually done on Linux. Because of current development, i simply MUST HAVE a Nvidia graphics card for my tasks. I need Nvidia's OptiX for pathtracing my visualizations and CUDA to train neural networks on the GPU. I never had any serious issues. Right now i own a RTX 4070ti.
Because i knew about the issues with Nvidia+Wayland, i kept Xorg for good. However, Gnome decided to focus on Wayland and a recent update broke my desktop. Every time i change my monitor config with xrandr, i get no background anymore, just black. That was the moment i decided to give Wayland a try
After graduating, i finally had the time to switch from X11 to Wayland. And oh boy, was that a ride!
What needed to be done for it to get working on Arch Linux (very short version):
Sooo, now i am sometimes able to login to a Wayland session but only if i first login to a X session, then logout and login to a Wayland session again. But behold! If i try to change the configuration of my 4 (!) monitors, Wayland crashes and won't start again.
Because i was tired of Gnome doing everything to work against my believes, i decided to finally give hyprland a try. And its true what they say, it is basically all i need! The configuration and ricing was actually very fun and very easy. Also the fact that Waybar is customized with CSS is such an amazing thing!
Well but now being on Wayland and trying to work, i encountered many other problems (which btw are also present in gnome on Wayland)
It was promised that Xwayland will solve all the legacy app problems. The idea is great, just start an X session inside of Wayland. In theory. In practice, the performance is far from good. In most games i get very heavy stuttering and glitches. Fractional scaling does not really work (at least on hyprland) and i know its a great deal of unpaid work for the developers of niche apps to port to Wayland. In the end, its not plug and play.
So i know now, after reading through all the wikis and forums and reddit posts, that it is most definitely nvidia to blame. They refused to adopt Wayland in the beginning and now they are very slow to finally hold up to competitors (AMD and Intel). Nonetheless, i think its a very bad idea of so many Desktop Environments and App developers to ditch X11 all together and prematurely use Wayland as the de facto standard. Wayland is NOT ready, and as long as Nvidia does not provide working drivers, it excludes a very large amount of Linux users.
I am tired to hope for every new driver update to fix all the problems, and then it won't.
I know, it might also be strategic to force nvidia to work on the issues brought onto the table by Wayland. But i think there are many false promises around. The work which needs to be done to get Wayland working is INSANE and this can never be expected from a newcomer to Linux. I fear this might be huge step back for Desktop Linux.
I can understand that Wayland is not supposed to replace X11. But in my honest opinion, it should be. This should have been the idea all the time. I hate that i have to switch back to X for certain tasks. I want to use Wayland, the simplicity and the performance, the security and the new features. But unfortunately, it is just not ready. Now i have two windowing systems, both of which don't really work anymore with most recent software. Its a mess.
Thanks for reading my rant. Have a great week!
TLDR: Wayland is still not ready, especially for professional graphics work

2024.05.12 21:04 dnizblei Pixel 7a - Netflix and Disney Plus Wont Stream Media

I bought two Pixel 7a in December 2023 and one of these is having problems with Netflix starting up (showing error code 'Device failure occured. Please restart your device and try again (501.-172).') and Disney plus aborting any media play ('We’re sorry, but we cannot play the video you requested. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Disney+ Support (error code 39).')
I have:
Build Version AP1A.240505.005 Netflix Version 8.114.0 build 19 50680 Disney Version 3.2.1-rc2
In most cases, I saw that problems disappeared with certain OS updates, but is there anyone still stuck with problems, or any recommendations how to fix the problem? Google support isn't willing to help, since they claim it is an App (caused) problem, while most threads on this guide into a DRM-related problem being fixed by OS/service update.
Update 2024/05/12:
-I found a working fix for Netflix. Somehow, none of the permission were given to the app. When giving all permissions, the app will give error 501.-173 requiring app restart. After this, it works. You can then remove some of the permission, as the one for notifications and microphone.
-No luck on Disney plus so far

2024.05.12 14:08 Maleficent_Fault_950 Building with e-Paper HAT

Edit: I am currently imaging a fresh rpi os so I can test the display to make sure a; I'm not completely dumb, and b; the display works.
Hey all! After doing a bunch of custom pwnaogtchi builds and face sets, I'm trying to step further into my pwnagotchi/rpi journey.
I have a bunch of rpi3b+, I like the native dual band card and the easy customization with adding GPS adapters and wifi adapters.
I have this https://www.waveshare.com/3.52inch-e-paper-hat.htm wavershare e-paper HAT, and I'm trying to get it to work with pwnagotchi. Granted, I should have done a base rpi image first to test things but I'm already here.
I even followed https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/3.52inch_e-Paper_HAT_Manual#Working_With_Raspberry_Pi instructions for setting up the display on rpi.
Does anyone have any ideas on if I'm missing something? Or if this is even possible?

2024.05.11 23:23 zeroedit Tracker site that specializes in "official" versions of ebooks?

Does this exist? Due to the overwhelming amount of ebook versions out there, I think I only want to start with the ones that Amazon officially sells through its website, but with DRM removed.

2024.05.11 23:03 CranberryCivil2608 How have HP printers not been “hacked” to remove DRM

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, and i’m sure my terminology is bad.
With the amount of hate HP printers rightfully get for their restrictions (bricking printers without a subscription or using 3rd part ink), you would think someone would have found a work around. Have I been looking in the wrong places, or am I just being an armchair redditor right now?

2024.05.11 22:33 BjoernDong Plex buffers excessively in some parts of movies

Hello Everybody, I cannot get behind why Plex is not running reliably. It is running on a TrueNas server, that is directly connected to the router. After I fixed my troubles with it buffering when transcoding DTS audio, even though it didn't had to because it was supported, I still have trouble with some movies buffering all the time, even though the bitrate isn't high enough to should be causing trouble.
In the following example I am watching a movie, and the first 3 minutes, it buffers about every 5 seconds. After passing a certain Timestamp (reproducible) it never buffers again. What is the Issue here?
Ill copy some logs here:

2024.05.11 11:48 VAG49 Remove DRM of ripped files to play on playstation 5

hey, I hope this don't violates rule 2, if so, i'm sorry.
so my problem is that when I ripped a dvd with makemkv and then try to watch it on my playstation 5, it won't as the ps5 detects its drm protection. is there a way to get rid of the protection after ripping? or do I need to make a setting before ripping?
thanks!

2024.05.06 22:20 SnakersVT What is your favorite < 8" e-ink reader with a stylus and a light?

I'm looking to replace my long-in-the-tooth 10th Gen Kindle Paperwhite with an e-reader with the following qualities:
I would use it primarily as an e-reader, not a notebook, hence desire for smaller size. I want the stylus for marking up and scribbling in margins, which I love doing to physical books; I want the light for reading in bed next to a sleeping spouse.
The only product I have found that fits these criteria is the discontinued Boox Nova Air / Air 2. Kindle Scribe is out b/c you can't actually write directly in the books (also I'd like to get away from Kindle but that's a lower priority); Supernote Nomad is out for lack of a light; other e-ink Booxes and Remarkable 2 are out because they're so large; Kobo Sage is out because of many horror stories about terrible battery life.
What do you think? Am I missing a good option? Is the Nova Air worth tracking down on eBay? Does your Kobo Sage actually have good battery life? Is the Nomad so amazing that I should make my spouse wear a sleep mask? Am I crazy to think I can fit notes in the margins of an 8" screen? (I prefer the widest margin setting on my Paperwhite fwiw.)
Thank you in advance for any thoughts you share.
UPDATE: I decided that the front light criterion was holding me back and ordered a Supernote Nomad along with a little clip-on USB-C light. Will report back. Thank you to everyone who chimed in with recommendations.

2024.05.06 20:04 gadgetssain Can you download from vudu to pc/laptop? I’ve seen articles that you can but they’re years old and I can’t figure out a way to. I know I can download on my phone but have they taken away the pc option?

As of my last update, Vudu does not offer a built-in option to download movies and TV shows for offline viewing on a PC or laptop. However, you can stream content through the Vudu website using a web browser on your computer.

If you're looking to download movies and TV shows from Vudu for offline viewing on your PC or laptop, you may need to explore alternative methods. One option is to use screen recording software or screen capture tools to record the video while it's playing on your computer screen. Keep in mind that this method may not be legal in all jurisdictions and may violate Vudu's terms of service, so proceed with caution and consider the legal implications.

Another option is to look into digital rights management (DRM) removal software, which can sometimes be used to strip DRM protection from purchased videos, allowing you to download and save them locally. However, using DRM removal software may also violate copyright laws and terms of service agreements, so it's essential to research and understand the legal implications before proceeding.

It's worth noting that the availability of downloading options may vary depending on licensing agreements and regional restrictions. If downloading content for offline viewing is essential to you, you may want to consider other digital storefronts or streaming services that offer this feature for PC or laptop users.

2024.05.06 14:08 pdboddy What's next?

We'll have to see if Sony doesn't try to slip the PSN link requirement in a future update, but I suspect the uproar over it will return if that happens.
What we might want to push for next are three things:
1) For the DRM to be removed, past iterations of this brand of DRM would remain installed after the game it was attached to was uninstalled. Steam, itself, is DRM. There does not need to be a potentially dangerous 'rootkit' installed on our machines.
2) Transparency and clarity when it comes to third party requirements for video games. A little blurb is not enough, it needs to be front and center on the store page so that people know 100% what is required. It needs to pop up.
If 'requirements' are optional, they're not requirements and should not be listed.
Changing requirements after purchase should invalidate the requirements, or refunds should be offered immediately. People should have the right to use what they purchased without having to agree (with no option to disagree) to stipulations that are a dealbreaker.
3) All developers and publishers should be held to account for posting games for sale in countries where players cannot legally purchase or sign up for accounts. This sort of thing should not happen.
Steam, game developers and publishers should do better, and we can use this success we've earned here to make this happen.
