2024.05.17 10:55 lumpheed I get the outrage now.

Somehow I had missed the outrage over Pocket Dimension. Got around to playing it. Amazing how bad node 7 is. Spawn in, eat 6 ults in a row. That's today's run over. Next run, what's this? Ults up again already, how did that happen? Stun locked, rewound, slowed. Dead. Scopely, if this is your game designers idea of fun times, you really need to get them professional help and keep them away from sharp objects. I suspect it's yet another cash grab. First you gate all the good Spider Society event rewards behind a character who you intentionally made impossible to get in time to do the event, unless you paid. What's wrong with putting the whales stones behind a star level requirement but letting the rest of us at least get all the toon FTP before the event ends? Now this Pocket Dimension. You cannot be this incompetent, surely? So that only leaves greed.

Colonel Jacobs
His hands flew through the folders General Jorgenson and Colonel Thatcher had. There were dozens of them, stacked upon each other all filed in alphabetical order. It had only been a few days since he had woken up from his coma and visited his home— now his mother’s grave. He clenched his fists at the thought. The grief and rage threatened to bubble and spill over once again. He took a deep breath and dragged out the exhale, almost to the point where he had emptied out his lungs.
He was the only one with clearance, and so he couldn’t disclose any of what he learned with his team. They would simply have to trust him and his judgment. Which he was sure they would do. His hands went over one of the folders skimming through it. There were multiple secret projects, but the ones with the most notes were Project S.T.A.R, Project L.U.N.A.R.I, Project R.E.V.I.V.E, Project D.A.W.N, and Project T.E.M.P.L.A.R.
The colonel decided to start with the most notes and papers. Project D.A.W.N.
He skimmed through the notes, reading through some of the details and highlighted words. Project D.A.W.N, the espionage project Thatcher had started placed two spies in Verlin who were to report directly to a Crescent general named Sienna Moretti who was apparently on humanity’s side.
So I was right. There was an espionage element. With the recent attacks and Thatcher’s death, however, it’s safe to assume that it had somehow failed. Either they got found out or they betrayed us. Both seem very likely, but if they were found out, it would be possible that they had died.
He read through all of it before setting the folder down. There were no new notes recently. He sighed and assumed that Project DAWN was a failure. Whether or not the agents were still alive and well, it was too risky to check if they had been compromised. It was better to assume that they had been and cut all contact. The only way to find out now was to go there himself and check. I can’t contact them again. There’s no telling if it would still be Moretti or the agents who would see my messages. It’s a big risk, and judging by the state of things, best to assume it failed.
He picked up another folder. This one had the label ‘under development’ on the folder. Project Templar. He opened the folder and was instantly met with a blueprint and drawings of a massive bipedal machine. It looked humanoid with strange proportions and was supposed to be standing at an impressive 30 meters, or 100 feet. The Titanic Engine Mech for Personal Land Assault and Reconnaissance.
It was apparently a joint project with the Church of Sol, utilizing new and advanced technologies he hadn’t heard of. A 203mm Gatling cannon on one arm, while the other had three different weapons. A massive firestarter that utilized a new type of fuel mixture that could theoretically spew flames a kilometer away using a high-pressure nozzle. The fuel was ignited using an electrical spark. The second weapon was a high-powered light weapon that fired a single powerful beam of focused light that was even further amplified by layers of focusing lenses that could increase its output several times. Its third weapon was… a dust domina?
Mark read through the specifications of the so-called ‘sand cannon’ weapon. It was a massive cannon that accelerated tiny particles several times. Each particle was to be electrically charged, and it would travel at immense speeds. Near impossible speeds. The resulting impact of a microscopic particle at such speeds would be enough to form a small crater and punch through armor like it was nothing. This weapon would fire multiple at the same time, which could literally eat away at anything on the opposing end.
In terms of secondary weapons, the titan had two missile launch chambers in front of its shoulder each containing about 40 missiles, and two massive howitzer cannons on top of it. Both are 800mm in caliber. It had massive stumpy legs that served as bunkers for a small platoon on each leg. Each leg had machine dominas and 155mm cannons. Its chassis held two nuclear reactors inside providing for its power and weaponry. Its armor was the thickest and most ridiculous he’d ever read. Two meters of heavy steel armor.
How far are we in terms of technology? This thing looks like it came out of an H.G. Wells sci-fi novel. He thought, shaking his head. It was over the top, but there was no denying its combat capabilities. If it was already under-developed then it must be the first prototype. This has already been approved. Guess I better see it for myself later and check how it's coming along. Construction apparently started just a few months before the invasion.
Next was project L.U.N.A.R.I. It was a project involving Six. “Huh,” he said, continuing to read on.
The Light Undone: Nocturnal’s Adaptive Resistance Initiative. As he read further, his eyes widened. The reason why Six was so special wasn’t just because of her immunity to all strigoi weaknesses, but because of her impressive ability to turn any true born strigoi like her. She could transfer her strain like any other strigoi and transform them into a version of hers. It however only seemed to work for naturally born strigoi. The new species of ‘half-breeds’ were called ‘Blessed Children’ as Thatcher had coined in the folder.
The plan was to turn all willing true-born hemolite strigoi into these blessed children. Able to withstand the sun. Immune to silver. Free from the dependency on blood. They could remove all the weaknesses of the strigoi and after the war— make it possible to integrate them into society as normal citizens living on the surface. The project folder also made mentions of a city-wide draft in Dante and highlighted the possibility of turning all Dantenite true born strigoi into these blessed children and renaming them as ‘Lunari’. A mix of the dark and the light. The light of Sol reflected in the children of the night.
“Thatcher, what the fuck have you been up to…” Mark whispered to himself.
While it was true that it could help in the war effort by utilizing Six and the dantenite population, it would also invite some unforeseen problems and consequences. Would humanity be okay with the Lunari? Would the world even be ready for them? Strigoi who were immune to the sun. They wouldn’t be impossible to kill, but they would be immensely more powerful if we were to take away their inherent weaknesses. This is a gamble. Its gain would only be seen during the war period, but its unintended effects on society could be catastrophic.
He frowned, setting the folder down. It was obviously Thatcher’s main plan; seeing as all her moves could be traced to the path of the eventual completion of this project. It seemed dangerous in the long run, but the duskwalkers and dantenites had been monumental in the war effort. Maybe it was the time the world started to accept them more. Isolation and segregation was definitely not the way to disperse fears and foster understanding.
If Thatcher thinks this is the next step forward… then I’ll put my faith in her plans.
Next up was Project S.T.A.R, or the Superior Tech and Adaptive Resistance. An upgrade to the current hemolite weapons and gear by using new researched studies. The Starfire Pattern Domina. The SFD-23 This thing features a new loading system and magazine, ditching the rotating cylinder most domina used, or the rotating helix magazine design of the current hemolite standard BM-16 domina.
The new domina had its magazine like a box… a strange design but it was certainly easier to handle than the bulky cylinders the helical mags used. In terms of ergonomics, it was smoother and fit more. Its placement however was on top of the domina, just above the barrel. Most of the weapon were to be made of lightweight polymers and the barrel itself were to be crafted out of reinforced aluminium. In addition to that, it had a 10-inch bayonet attached to it.
There were other new things as well, such as the composition of the bullet. Looking at the conceptual cross-section designs, Mark read through its description and how it would function. A .308 cased telescoped bullet covered in a silver jacket with break-away petals surrounding the main body. Inside the jacket was a penetrator core that was to be made of depleted uranium. It had a small amount of incendiary compound and… powdered white phosphorus behind an explosive compound. The thin silver jacket would deform and trigger the explosive compound inside the body. It would blow up causing massive internal damage and release the incendiary materials into the body with the flecks of powdered white phosphorus. The penetrator core could still potentially keep going and hit a second target, or punch through heavily armored targets.
Part of the new Project S.T.A.R was overhauling the armor and gear of not just the Hemolites but the Hunters as well. Starfire Mk 1. Carapace Armor. Carapace? It looked like plates of steel covered in a rubberized coat. It was supposed to be slipped on over the original hemolite body armor. It added a spring-loaded wrist blade to the gauntlet, a thicker coat made of resistant materials, and added extra padding for the knees, shoulders, and elbows.
However, the hemolites weren’t the only ones mentioned in the folder. It was to serve the Hunters as well. “Hunters…” Mark said. “August’s group is part of this initiative too.” He flipped through some of the pages. There were blueprints and drawings of an armored suit. A mechanized suit even smaller and more compact than the jotunn units. The Mark 1 STR battlesuit. It was supposed to hug the wearer’s frame and increase their overall power. It was supposed to be built of titanium alloy and a heavy steel frame with composite armor. It had a cooling system, life support systems that could recycle bodily fluids, and an exoskeleton frame that could increase the wearer’s strength and speed.
However, the real eye-opener was Thatcher’s notes. She had been ranting about the new human evolution, and how the Hunters were the first of the ‘Solari’. She wanted to enhance human genetics and push past the peak of human ability to reach greater heights. Implants and restructuring of the anatomy to make it more efficient. Using the blood of the goddess herself. She must have lost it. These are the ramblings of a lunatic. At least… if she didn’t mention the goddess. Why was the goddess important here?
The writings ended with the words: “See Project R.E.V.I.V.E, for more details.”
Mark eyed the final folder. His hands shook as he reached out to take it. Flipping it open, his hands nearly dropped it in shock. The goddess Helena was alive. There were pictures of her naked form floating in a giant tube of fluid. There were more of Thatcher’s ramblings and excited rants about the possibilities of such a discovery. Resurrection, Enhancement, and Veneration: Implementation of Visionary Evolution.
The goddess is alive?! According to the file, she’s currently under the Cathedral of New Lundun. Not only that, but the file also detailed the extraterrestrial tech that lay beneath the cathedral. So the goddess is real and she’s— not really a goddess, but rather, a vampyr who created herself a human body to stand in the sun, and decided that it wants to be on humanity’s side… what the fuck.
Mark’s frown and confusion only increased as he read on. Thatcher’s notes seemed to nearly descend into madness as she had written about creating ‘the first hundred’, alluding to the 100 members of the Hunters division. Her plan was to revive the goddess, and with her help and expertise in genetics— use her DNA to transform the Hunters into demi-humans. Super soldiers. Literal children of the goddess Helena. They would then don the STR battlesuits, the first of the superhuman warriors to defend humanity. Solari.
Their lightning-speed advancement into technology was heralded by studying the alien tech, which deepened the understanding of physics and engineering. Nuclear technologies, chemical warfare, new material sciences, the mechs, and walkers, it was spearheaded by trying to reverse-engineer technology centuries ahead of our own… for the past hundred years. It wasn’t completely stolen, however. More or less borrowed ideas that had been made into our own with our own designs and implements. Still, the speed at which the Church and the military had deciphered such advancements all by themselves was… impressive to say the least.
Still, the fact that the goddess was alive, and could be brought back was big news. Checking the file for details, he found that the previous general, Jorgenson, had already approved this project. It was their next step as soon as they returned from New Amsterdam; which never happened.
If Helena was alive, then she could end this war swiftly, or at the very least help greatly like she once did during the War of Darkness. Having the goddess back would throw a massive wrench in the Crescent’s plans. It would certainly be something they wouldn’t expect. Not even I expected this, since many sources say that the goddess had already ascended to watch over humanity, while conspiracy theorists claim she had died in battle and that the Church was worshiping a corpse. This could be the trick up our sleeves that no one would even consider.
The colonel quickly got up from his seat and gathered the main files he had read. He placed them in a bag and rushed outside of his office in Facility 9. He went over to a nearby room and flicked the lights on. “We need to go,” he said. In an instant seven hemolite soldiers got up from whatever they were doing and instantly stood in line.
“Sir! Whatever you need of us, sir,” the group said in unison.
They were Hemo-1. His former squad members. He had taken up Louis' suggestion that they be his personal security detail. It was a shame that he had basically placed the best hemolite team out of commission, but after all he had been through he convinced himself that he could be just a little selfish. He didn’t want to lose any more friends. Not on his watch. Not while he was in an office, and they were out fighting.
“We’re going to New Lundun. Better pack up, it’s going to be a long night.”
“Mark,” Olivia said.
Jacobs turned to her direction and gave her a nod.
“Colonel, sir, may I ask where in New Lundun?”
“Liv, you don’t need to do that with me. Please. I give all of you special permission,” the colonel groaned. “It’s so weird. I mean, ‘captain’ was bad enough, but now you’re acting like I’m an authority figure.”
“You… are, though,” Emma shrugged.
“I’m your friend, and Liv I’m literally your partner. Unless you have some kind of weird fetish, save it for later.”
Olivia grinned, shaking her head. “Duly noted!” she chirped.
“That’s better,” Mark chuckled. “Now come on, we have a cathedral to visit.”
“Uhh, I’m not sure if you noticed, but we’re kinda… strigoi?!” Louis groaned. “I’d burn the moment I step in that place! Plus, it’s coated in silver! Anything I even touch will give me burns!”
“Oh come on, Lou. You have fucking gloves on. As long as you’re not a clumsy dumbass you’ll be fine… oh wait.’
“Uh huh, just sayin’ what I think, boss.”
The group headed out and Mark said something on his radio. He then sat on the ground, making his joints pop. The rest of the squad shrugged and followed his example, sitting down on the grass and waiting for… nothing. Charles and Zach looked at each other in confusion. “Uh, sir?” they asked. “Aren’t we supposed to be heading out and traveling right now?”
“Oh yeah, we’re just waiting.”
“Foooor…?”
The colonel gave them a smirk as a loud noise began to make itself known. A hummingbird transport appeared out of the distance and stopped right above them, slowly descending into the grass. “Being colonel has its perks,” Mark said with a smile. He stood up and hopped inside the hummingbird as soon as it landed. “Come on now! We’ve got work to do! Last one aboard buys everyone food later!”
Emma zipped in before Mark could even finish his sentence, followed by Olivia, Phineas, Charles, Zach, and then Louis, who sadly took too long to process what the colonel said, and lagged behind.
“Aw, man! Fuck this shit.”
“Rules are rules, Lou. Prepare your wallet later.” Mark grinned.
With a smile, the colonel pulled Olivia to his side, who blushed for a moment before shaking her head. “Take us up! New Lundun Cathedral! How long would it take?” he asked the pilot.
“About an hour and a half!” The pilot replied. “Less if you want to get there as soon as possible!”
“Take your time! The night’s still young.”
The hummingbird started to lift up, taking them into the air. The group settled down in their seats and watched outside the open. Mark opened up a bag inside the hummingbird and took out some ear muffs built for a strigoi. Extremely loud noises were damaging for a strigoi’s enhanced hearing, so the military started implementing ear muffs for them after complaints from early deployments of the hemolite squads.
The trip didn’t take too long. In only an hour and twenty minutes they had arrived at the safe zone of New Lundun, heading straight for the cathedral. The night mass had just ended and people were leaving the cathedral. “Looks like we made it in perfect time!” Mark smiled. They hovered for a few minutes in the air before eventually landing down right in front of the statue of Helena.
As soon as they landed, the colonel and his group left the hummingbird. Mark instructed the pilot to wait for them. He went straight for the cathedral with his group following behind. He entered inside, clearing his throat. “Hello?”
“Well this is surely unexpected,” an old man said, walking up to greet them.
“Great Grandfather Aurelius. It’s uh, an honor.”
“Please. The honor is mine… I see you’re the new colonel. Yes, I’ve heard the news,” he said. “Would you mind telling me your name, young man? As well as your companions, if they feel so. I usually don’t allow duskwalkers here but, I have nothing against them. I’ll make an exception for your group.”
“Thank you, Great Grandfather,” Mark replied. “I am Colonel Mark Jacobs. These are my friends and security detail. Olivia, Zach, Phineas, Charles, Emma, and Louis.”
“I see, and what brings you here?”
“Since Thatcher’s demise, I was given access to her research and project folders upon taking up the title. I’ve learned about what’s under your cathedral,” Mark cleared his throat. “Would it be alright if we could see it? I’d like to check it for myself. Of course, under your permission and guidance, Great Grandfather.”
The church head looked from Mark to his companions. He pulled a slight frown and hummed. “Do these companions of yours have the clearance? Surely, we wish to keep our secrets hidden,” he said. Mark nodded.
“They do not have clearance to know what is in Thatcher’s folders and her findings,” the colonel nodded. “However, I give them permission to accompany me, and should they discover things for themselves, then you have my word and my trust that I can keep them from spilling state secrets.”
The Great Grandfather gave a short pause before ultimately relenting. “Very well,” he let out a sigh. “Follow me.”
Aurelius walked behind the altar and pulled the same lever, which opened the same staircase leading underground, where Jorgenson and Thatcher had once gone. “Over here, colonel,” he said. “I do not know you completely yet, but this is a big deal of trust I am giving you. Perhaps you would be the one to do things that Thatcher could not have.”
Mark nodded, he and his group followed the Great Grandfather down the staircase. It led down to a massive underground facility, with numerous priests, researchers, and scientists. Libraries, records, instruments, and artifacts of old. It was a treasure trove of learning.
“So,” Aurelius cleared his throat. “What would you like to know about?”
“This isn’t all of it,” Mark said. “Thatcher mentioned a living, breathing, Helena.”
His group behind him let out a soft gasp, but they tried their best to hide their surprise.
“Hm,” the Great Grandfather nodded. “Perceptive young man aren’t you? Very well.”
They were then led into another room, behind a set of heavy blast doors. If the whole group were trying to hide their surprise then, now they could barely contain it. Even the colonel stared awestruck at the things he had seen. Despite the near-magical objects around them, the true shock was the massive starship at the end of the hallway. “It’s impressive isn’t it?” Aurelius said. “All of the goddess’ artifacts and items at our disposal, to use and learn from, to integrate into our own. This is why Anglestan is the most powerful nation in the UHT in terms of development. When it comes to industry, however, that would go to the UNA. But we share our secrets with them. All our advancements are handed to them first before any other nation.”
“This is all amazing, Great Grandfather,” Mark replied. “But this is not what I’m here for.”
“No, it’s not.” Aurelius nodded.
He led them to another room, one that was sterilized and sported advanced machinery. Things that Mark had never even seen. There were screens with luminous green texts that appeared in front of it. Large panels with numerous keys, levers, and dials. Graphs of all sorts and beeping monitors. In the center, was the very thing he had come all this way to confirm. A large cylinder filled with liquid, sporting tubes and pipes connecting to its base. Inside was a woman of large proportion. Four arms, two legs, and six wings. In her bare chest was a symbol of the sun that seemed to glow dimly.
“There she is, there’s you goddess.”
Neither Mark nor his group spoke a word. He walked up to it, eyeing the woman inside. It really is her. Down to the last details. Golden hair, six limbs, six folded wings, and she looks massive. Probably as big as her statue just outside the cathedral. This is it. The very goddess in the history books, the one spoken about in legends and the one worshiped in the Churches of Sol.
“Can we free her?” he said.
The Great Grandfather nearly choked on his spit upon hearing those words. “Free her?! That could kill her! We don’t even understand this technology, let alone control it!” he said pointing at the panels. “The machines you see here are the best and most advanced we have based on what we can reverse engineer, but even then, the consequences of tampering with its functions may be disastrous!”
“I understand, Great Grandfather,” Mark said. “But we are in a dire situation, and the goddess may be our hope of turning this around. Whatever secrets of her tech that you don’t understand, wouldn’t she be able to teach us directly? What good is she floating around in Sol knows what?”
“That is her miraculous healing fluid. She had already built this contraption centuries ago in case anything were to happen to her, that her body’s natural healing could not sustain,” Aurelius said. “During the War of Darkness, Helena was struck with a weapon so deadly, her very cells began to tear away. The Reaper. Dealt to her by Absolem the progenitor. Her flesh was peeling from her body, and she began to decay whilst she still breathed. She entered this contraption and gave strict instructions to the Great Grandfather at the time, not to interrupt the healing process. The machine that monitored her, however, began to fail over time.”
“So this… these screens and panels…”
“Is only what functions we can understand. We took it upon ourselves to rebuild and study it the best we could. What we have right now is only a cheap imitation of a technology we do not fully comprehend,” he said. “It took us decades to even figure out the fundamentals and create a working prototype of this machine. By some miracle, the goddess’ healing process had remained even while we replaced components of technology ahead of ours.”
“But you know how to free her, don’t you?”
“I… yes.”
“Great Grandfather Aurelius,” Mark began. “We can end this war. Imagine what we could do with the goddess fighting on our side. We could advance even further, we could finally end the bloodshed, and we can show humanity that there is still hope. Imagine how people all over the world would feel seeing as their goddess has returned.”
“I wish I had your enthusiasm,” Aurelius said. “But it is simply too risky. The Church’s duty is to protect Helena and her legacy. We keep her alive, literally and figuratively. She nearly died the last time she was involved in a war. Would you risk losing the goddess?”
“Would you risk humanity losing?”
The Great Grandfather fell silent, looking back at Helena floating inside the tube, then to the panels that controlled it. He frowned and let out a long sigh. “The goddess said that we should not interrupt it. That it would end as soon as it was finished. Maybe we should trust her words.”
Mark shook his head. “I don’t spot a single blemish on the goddess. Not a single scratch,” he argued. “You said it yourself that the machine had begun to fail and you replaced components. How would you know that the thing that’s supposed to wake her up was not tampered with? Think about it. What you may think is a useless piece may be integral to the whole machine. Or maybe your replacements were not up to the task. Just because nothing’s happened doesn’t mean its functions have remained whole.”
“Young man, we simply cannot gamble with the goddess’ life here.”
“Have you no faith? Great Grandfather?”
Aurelius stepped back in shock. Mark’s companions looked at each other, clearly surprised as well. “Mark… I don’t think we should keep arguing with—” Olivia tried to say.
“No,” the colonel said firmly, cutting her off. “Great Grandfather Aurelius, do you think that Helena will not be able to pull through if we wake her? How long has it been? A century? How much longer will we wait? She may be immortal but humans aren’t.”
“I'm sorry, but the chances of failure are too high. The probability of her—”
“I don’t care about the probability! Would you rather put your faith in a statistic?!” Mark raised his voice. “I lost my mother to this war! My friends! My job! My eye, and almost my life! I’ve put mine on the line out there! You don’t know what it’s like out there! Was my mother’s death just a probability too? Was she just a statistic to you?! That as long as the numbers are good, no matter how many are lost, we are ‘winning’?!”
“Mark—!”
“No, Liv! He needs to know what’s really going on out there!” he spat. “Great Grandfather, with all due respect, but you don’t have a damn clue what it’s like to be in the field. You’re a man of faith, aren’t you? Take a risk. Everyone else has.”
Aurelius stood there, dumbfounded. He bit the inside of his cheeks and clenched his fists. “For your insolence, I would have had you flogged and stripped of your rank,” he glared at the young colonel. However, his features slowly softened, letting out a soft sigh. “But I have never seen such conviction. Mighty is your faith.”
The Great Grandfather moved over to the panels and reached into his robe, pulling out from around his neck a key with the symbol of the sun. He inserted it into the machine and turned. A beep sounded, right before Aurelius pulled a lever. In an instant, the fluid inside the glass chamber began to drain out into the tubes under it. Slowly, the chamber emptied and all that was left was the nude form of the goddess sitting in the glass.
“Did it work?” Louis asked, stepping forward and looking at the woman.
Aurelius stayed silent, his hands shaking in anticipation. Mark moved toward the glass chamber, when suddenly, the glass opened up like a door, releasing a fragrant mist. They stood there, watching for a whole minute. Nothing. At first nothing. The Great Grandfather looked like he was about to break down. His knees shook as he covered his mouth, thinking that he was responsible for the death of Helena.
That was when… a soft sound was heard. Movement. Olivia immediately went over to Mark and stood in front of him. Ready to protect him should anything happen. Slowly, the goddess moved more, her arms inched to the side.
Then, her eyes opened.

Should Capcom Reboot The Final Fight Series?
https://preview.redd.it/g07nnzr4qx0d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=926851916d6bb08c6bab843c75e30d460a8885ba
When it comes down to classic video game IP’s owned by Capcom one of the few franchises that many people think about is Final Fight. The Final Fight series began in ’89 and it surprisingly became very popular in arcade centers and was considered a big deal during the early 90’s. In relation to the beat em up genre Final Fight is considered to be one of the most iconic video games of all-time. However, despite how successful the original Final Fight game was its ’93 sequel which was released exclusively for the SNES was considered to be somewhat of a flop. Final Fight 2 from ’93 had saw the return of the main protagonist Mike Haggar but saw the absence of both Guy and Cody who were featured in the original ’89 game. The soundtrack for Final Fight 2 was weak compared to its prequel and the new characters Carlos and Maki were less popular Guy or Cody. Final Fight 3 from ’95 was a better game overall but it was also a SNES exclusive. Final Fight 3 was also overlooked during the mid 90’s mainly because the beat em up genre was starting to become irrelevant around that time.
Aside from a spin-off game from ’99 called Final Fight Revenge the only other games that we got to see were Final Fight: Streetwise and Final Fight Double Impact which came out between 2006-2010. The Final Fight franchise was been completely dead for over a decade now and it seems unlikely that there will ever be a Final Fight 4. The Final Fight series never really generated much of a profit for Capcom like some of the other franchises including Resident Evil, Monster Hunter or Street Fighter. Capcom is not in a similar situation as Sega where they need to revive older IP’s to become relevant again especially considering how popular some their franchises are in the modern era of gaming. Also, society is radically different today compared to the 90’s where people prefer games like Grand Theft Auto which glorifies anti-heroes who are generally criminals or rebels. A Final Fight reboot would be interesting and could easily capture the attention of the gaming community but it would unlikely have the same level of success that Streets of Rage 4 got back in 2020.

2024.05.17 07:35 apophis-pegasus All Systems Lore: A Short Intro

A lore post about the ASS-U setting. Mostly for my own recollection (mods hope this is fine)
The Universe
Almost all known life in the universe inhabits a large, noncontinuous region in the milky way, about 5000 light years in diameter known as the Life Belt. This belt is slowly, but constantly expanding, and the non inhabited pockets of star systems of this belt are slowly and constantly shrinking. Within this belt are around 500 known advanced sentient species, including humanity, and countless trillions of nonsentient life forms, from single celled entities to full fledged, complex multicellular organisms. Of those advanced species, approximately 300 are carbon based life forms.
Interstellar Politics
Humanity falls under the aegis of the Consortium, a loose coalition of 150-ish carbon based, mostly oxygen breathing species, often with some form of central nervous system. Political groupings of this sort are an implicit standard in the galaxy, as species will often together based on biochemistry and physiology, due to simpler (relative) ease of communication, and greater likelihood of psychological alignment. As a Consortium political scholar succinctly put it:
"It's a lot easier to have regular and meaningful diplomatic contact with a species where you can both understand what light is, and that 2000 degree temperatures environments are unpleasant, rather than trying it with a living rock that only senses gamma radiation and communicates by spraying molten iron at you."
This political grouping also allows fairly straightforward exchanges of technology and culture, not in the least of which are the Standard Technologies, and the All Systems Science University (ASS-U).
Standard Technologies
The Standard Technologies are technical capabilities developed and maintained jointly (though not necessarily equally) by all members of the Consortium, for the sake of the prosperity of its members. Akin to Europe's Airbus, they pool resources and technical capability to develop and refine capabilities in a way that would be cost prohibitive for any one member. These capabilities are currently:
  • Universal translation technology.
  • Faster than light travel and communication.
  • The Consortium Information Grid.
  • Computation technology.
  • Nanofabrication.
  • Nuclear fusion.
The nature of these technologies is considered synergistic. No practical Information Grid without Universal Translators or advanced computing. Virtually no FTL travel without fusion. And little highly advanced computing without nanofabrication. And no new knowledge without the Information Grid.
With these technologies being standardized and widely manufactured, the total resource cost of turning or keeping your civilization interstellar drops significantly in addition to allowing virtually every Consortium species to be effectively post scarcity in needs, if not in wants. Access to the Standard Technologies tends to be one of the greatest draws of entering the Consortium. However, this benefit also carries a catch.
Access to the Standard Technologies is regulated by the Standard Technologies Act, legislation which requires universal access to interstellar travel, in addition to universal access to the Standard Technologies themselves, without regard for national, ethnic, economic or class factionalism. Failure to provide this access, will result in access to the Standard Technologies and their updates being restricted, an action which may very well eventually cripple any interstellar society as they would have to develop, obtain and maintain their own Technologies, a task which is nigh impossible to do at the same scale.
This regulation has a tendency of spurring civilizations to rapidly make societal alterations, and global (or interplanetary) improvements to material conditions following first contact, and initial exposure to the Standard Technologies. Which is just as the Consortium likes it.
"Imagine if Airbus decided that if your country's inequality level was too high, they don't sell you planes anymore. For anything. Not for cargo, or passengers, or defence, nothing. They wont let other people lend you planes too. No maintenance, or technical assistance either. Oh, and they're the only major aircraft manufacturers. Good luck trying to start Boeing from scratch."
--Exerpt from diplomatic debrief post First Contact.
"In this regard, we are societal chauvinists. Whatever international or local conflicts you have are not our concern. Whatever sectarian animus you hold is not our concern. Whatever class conceptions you have are not our concern. Everyone gets a fair shot at access. Or no one does. Don't like it? Not our concern. Your civilization will be crippled? Guess our answer."
--Unnamed Consortium diplomat.
Overview of Common Encountered Species
Ingen
"They're...programs. Robots? Uploaded consciousness from what I understand, infomorphs is their preferred term. Whatever you do, don't call them machines. They hate that."
--Exerpt from diplomatic debrief post First Contact.
The most numerous species of the Consortium, their total number is not completely known but likely numbers in the mid billions, due in no small part to the fact that the Ingen are an Uploaded species. Formerly being carbon based life forms, they decided meatspace held too many drawbacks, and uploaded their consciousnesses into a series of Matrioshka Brains around their home and colonized systems, existing as uploaded intelligence. Reproduction then became a simple matter of self replication, "forking" oneself, or combining efforts to make a new unique entity.
Due to their infomorphic existence, Ingen tend to want for nothing, most content to live out their lives in massive simulations. However a notable minority set out into the universe in mechanical bodies, to explore, conduct diplomacy or military action, obtain resources or simpl6y to alleviate "boredom from paradise". These mechanical bodies can range from being as simple as a bipedal android body used for direct engagement with other sentients, to being as large as a battleship, acting as both crew and vessel.
Technologically speaking, the Ingen are a powerhouse, being heavily responsible for universal translator technology, and the Consortium Information Grid. Many of their projects are literally planetary in scale, and their computational abilities are second to none. Militarily, and economically, the Ingen are the closest thing to a superpower in the Consortium.
Like with any other cosmopolitan civilization, the Ingen do have immigrants, alien individuals who come to be uploaded and join their society. Culturally, once uploaded they are considered the same as native Ingen, and are referred as such.
Farisians
"I dunno what you want me to say here. They look like humans so much it's actually freaking us out. And they kept staring at us. Not that we can blame them, we were doing the same."
"They're very...handsy. They touch your face, arms...it's like they're eyeing meat sometimes to be honest. One of a diplomat's aides may have made a pass at one of our security detail, we're still trying to suss out their cultural idiosyncrasies. Don't be fooled though, they're terrifyingly clever. Detail oriented to a tee. They ate up every scrap of information about our planet that we told them, and from the looks of some of them, we may have just been repeating information they already knew. Off the diplomatic bench though, they seem to like to take the piss out of us a lot. But they seemed really happy when we started giving it right back"
--Exerpts from diplomatic debrief post First Contact.
The Farisians make up a major power in the Consortium, holding significant territories, a highly capable military, and having a fairly large population. But their biggest claims to fame and of humanity's First Contact are their severe sex imbalance (~90% female), and their stunningly close resemblance to humans by galactic standards.
At a glance, a Farisian looks like a very tall, athletic human with pointed ears, solid colored eyes, and a thin layer of nearly imperceptible fur over their body. Anatomically and biochemically, enough commonalities exist that Farisians would be fairly comfortable, long term in a human friendly environment, and vice versa. This has aroused the interest of numerous Consortium scientists with hypotheses on the causes of this similarity ranging anywhere from a particularly odd case of convergent evolution, to panspermia, and common ancestry. Regardless of the reason, this similarity has made Farisians the unofficial main point of contact to humanity in many regards, a role they seem to have accepted with gusto.
Farisian history is unfortunately punctuated by tragedy. A global war pre First Contact, decimated over half of their population, with the use of biological and mutagenic weapons being responsible for degrading the genetics for males, and intensely hampering fertility in a significant number of females. Residue left behind kept this problem persistent, with only a few, genetically compromised males left. The species was only saved via the deployment of artificial gestation technology and advanced genetic engineering,. However, this has turned the Farisians into a technology dependent species in regards to reproduction, with artificial wombs, and access to them being significant cultural cornerstones of modern Farisian society and politics. This also enabled Farisians to become subject matter experts in bioengineering, with them providing significant Consortium expertise in xenomedicine.
Truvulians
"I kid you not, imagine shrinking a fat Squidward and giving him, like 10 more eyes. Best way I can describe it."
--Exerpt from diplomatic debrief post First Contact.
Diminutive and portly, Truvulians are known for their tentacled appendages, and excellent (not to mention numerous) eyesight. Notable for their impressive motor skills and visual processing, they are notable for starting the sport of "rock kissing" an extreme sport where a ship executes planetary slingshot maneuvers with a minimum of computational assistance. The less assistance, the higher your score.
Digonians
"When we get back to Earth, we need to have a long talk with the Americans"
--Exerpt from diplomatic debrief post First Contact.
Simply put, Digonians look like the Greys. A few more anatomical differences than the popular conception, but the base concept is nearly identical. As it happens, the Digonians set out to explore the stars around a century ago, fairly recently by galactic standards. However, their methods of gathering data on alien lifeforms were often...invasive. However, socially they have advanced and made apologies to the species that they may have caused distress to. Jury's out on if they mean it.
Iaxians
"We as a species need to make some significant changes, and soon. I'm being deadly serious. We just got a crash course on who we might become if we don't"
--Exerpt from diplomatic debrief post First Contact.
Iaxians are notable for being one of the few civilizations to receive sanction due to nonadherence to the Standard Technologies Act. Tribal and factionalized, the Iaxians used their newfound access to technology to immediately engage in, and exacerbate numerous power struggles throughout their colonized worlds. After sanction, their civilizations total quality of life plummeted as many factions realized they did not have the resources or expertise to create and keep their use of the Standard Technologies at a pre sanction level. This has caused numerous militant pockets of Iaxian society to take up arms and prey on Consortium ships transiting through the borders of Iaxian space, appropriating whatever technology and resources they can capture.

2024.05.17 07:29 Zealousideal_Suit343 Fixing Madame Web: Totally Rebranding The Movie.

completely change the idea of the film, the first thing I would do would be to give Casandra Web spider powers and make her an old woman like in the comics, maybe she would go back to the past through the multiverse or time travel, and more references to the Spider-Verse. She can return to her young form when she travels to the past as she is suffering from the effects of time travel, but she continues with the wisdom of an elderly woman, and when she returns to the future she returns to being elderly.
Make her wear her spider suit and use her spider powers for most of the film, same thing with the other spider girls, make a movie about spider persons, with lot of action scenes, And not a premonition film of a generic paramedic.
I would do also makes she acts as the controllers of time and multiverse like in Loki Time Police, acting all this time as a "guardian angel of all Spider Men" since she sees the future and knows everything that will happen to Peter and all the spider persons and she knows that she has some mystical duty to save they, and in the comics she are like this, she is the reason cause Mark Webb Peter Parker and Sam Raimi Peter Parker dont died in tragic deads, Maybe she is sabotaging some of the villain's clothes, adding an object where it shouldn't be, butterflly effect, cause she was there to save them, even in a invisible way, and ezekiel is playng the the opossite role, tryng to kill spider personas. Make her like a assasins creed of Spider Society working with spider man 2099 and superior spider man tor erase a the non canon events and save spider people who are in risk in the past. With all this time travels and multiversal travels there could even be an appearance by Spider Man 2099 and alot of Spider Personas, a aparitiion of Spider Society. And of course many more references to the Spider-Man universe, such as the construction of Oscorp.
Make the movie be a Live Action Prequel of the animated Spider Verse 3 or a point of start for a live action Spider Verse movie or universe, maybe with morlum in the post credit scenes or some Spider Verse 3 related scenes.
And make the film take place even further back in time, maybe during the Second or first World War ,19th, 18th or 17th century, or perhaps a few years after Christ, because the 80s weren't that long ago and you couldnt only understand it through details and the film didn't give the feeling of the past.
And of course make the film more marketable to the mainstream, maybe call it "Spider Woman", "Spider Girls" or "Spider Women" would atract more ppl
Or even "The First Spider" or "The First Spider-Men" (considering that Madame Web is one of the oldest spider people in existence, or even the first if we not consider medieval spider man, and the film is set in the past. Calling a protagonized girls movie The First Spider Men is ok, since Men means Humans in general) or Just "WEB" since this Includes all versions of spider people that would appear in the film and sound marketeable and at the same time still make Madame Web the main character.
And these factors that I said are just factors about capturing the audience, there are still technical factors that need adjustment, such as bad acting, bad writing, bad CGI, bad editing, bad action scenes, bad visuals, bad scenes.

2024.05.17 07:20 Puzzleheaded_Let5389 How do you integrate into society after being pronounced dead?

I know that reviving characters is seen as a cop-out and is generally frowned upon, but my character is extremely integral to the story and HAS to be revived, my main question is how do I integrate them back into society (modern day) when their death has been publicized on T.V. and Social Media? They even had a funeral.
Considering this campaign is a lot more homebrew than average I will briefly explain a plot summary of the whole campaign. Basically a church organization in a small town during modern day America is trying to prematurely start The Rapture. In order to do this 7 children throughout the town were kidnapped and turned into one of the Seven Deadly Sins via experimentation and magic. My character is the sin of Wrath.
Despite being based on realism, magic is real and heaven/hell are two planes of existence alongside Earth. The current party is a group of high school Seniors who discovered they each had a strange attunement to magic. They were brought together by a mysterious stranger who watched them from afar and sent them on a quest to find the missing children and stop the organizations plans. Abel (my PC) got her attunement to magic from bloodlines, as she is half-demon (tiefling) and half-human.
Today my character died in one of the most unlucky and unlikely of scenarios the night she was supposed to be kidnapped, forcing me and the DM to start from scratch. She was crushed by a tree she didn't see while trying to guarantee the death of a boss, rolled a nat 1 on a dex save with 7 hp left. The party tried to lift the tree (cant heal her if shes underneath) with a DC of 80 (total rolls from 7 members) while she rolled death saving throws. They consistently rolled 1s and 3s (even with high strength modifiers) and she ultimately died before they could lift it.
The DM and I already have the method of which she's going to be revived, after her body was delivered to the mortician her corpse was swapped for a fake while the real one was transported to a secret laboratory. Here they're going to bring her back to life with a demonic summoning spell in order to convert her into the sin of Wrath. This organization has lots of influence (police department, local businesses, and etc) and power to do this so im not concerned about the process my only question is if the party succeeds in saving her, how does she integrate back into society?
I have a couple ideas already but I don't want anything to feel awkward or forced... This campaign is extremely story-driven so I'm hoping to implement something within reasonable doubt. The only idea I have is a Ritual that alters the memories of the entire town by replacing Abel's death with a strange disappearance. Other than that I'm desperate for ideas. Please and Thankyou!
Also do note that I want to go for something more creative than "secret identity", but if you think you have a creative spin on it im not opposed. :D

2024.05.17 07:04 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 513: Shared Fears

First Previous Wiki
A group of Sprilnav had entered the room, dragged claws bearing paint across Kashaunta and Penny's faces, and left again. Another group of Sprilnav, this time Elders, had entered the room, leading to a hologram forming around Penny and Kashaunta to hide their faces behind perfect masks.
They carried a long black box on their shoulders. Kashaunta approached their kneeling forms, unlatching the box with her claws. Special sounds chimed from electronic locks, and the box flipped open, revealing a new Soul Blade. It was Azeri's Soul Blade, or the one he'd once owned at least. Given the new information Penny had on them, the sword wasn't truly 'his' in a literal sense.
They had then moved to a more central room on the flagship, complete with a massive kitchen, bedroom, and entertainment room. Kashaunta's quarters were lavish, though they were not as flush with finery and gold as Penny would have expected.
Penny wore Kashaunta's Soul Blade on her hip. The ancient weapon didn't seem to have the mind-altering effects the last one did. But it was beyond powerful, for sure. It also came with a stealth coating that could be activated to hide its presence.
Azeri's Soul Blade, on the other hand, definitely affected her.
Penny could hear the faint sounds of distant voices echoing in her thoughts. She could sense Cardi and Nilnacrawla in her mind more clearly as if she'd finally put on a set of glasses after not having them her entire life. So many things were clearer now, but so many weren't. Kashaunta had made a sacred agreement with her, at least in Sprilnav culture.
Backed by the Progenitors. All of them, apparently. And they were all sworn to silence, which Nilnacrawla and Kashaunta assured her would also include Twilight and Nova. She could understand that, but Nova's actions toward Penny in the past made her wary of relying on him for anything related to her safety.
And it was before the Judgment, now in nine days. Kashaunta's VIs had gathered the data, ordered it, and formulated responses. She'd designed them to sound like real people and real things that would be said, not just decent scripts with odd lexicon and grammatical habits.
"So," Penny said, looking at Kashaunta relaxing beside her. The Elder's carefree stance didn't fool Penny as to what had just happened. It had looked rushed, but she knew there was a larger purpose behind it than she believed. "The Pact. Were you truly this desperate to regain my trust?"
"I was," Kashaunta admitted. "And am. I have a tendency to manipulate people around me. This has made me good at being able to tell when a relationship is falling apart. Were I not to do something this extreme, we would have continued to fall apart, and eventually the rift would have been too large for even this to bridge.
I do not expect forgiveness or for you to understand my viewpoint and ideas. I have destroyed nations and entire civilizations. I have spent my fair share of time in evil, and use the threat of who I was and who I am against those who slight me. Reputation is important among our species, more so than anything but power. But they are linked.
A reputation of weakness will never exist with a person of strength. If it develops, the Elders will pile onto that unfortunate soul to plunder the riches they believe can no longer be protected. And once you fall, it is impossible to rise again. We do need each other, Penny. Perhaps you do not agree, yet, but this goes beyond the Judgment."
Penny wanted to argue. She wanted to listen to the voices demanding her hatred of the Elder before her- wait, what?
Penny frowned. She focused on them, and they appeared. A cacophony of voices, all Sprilnav in origin. They were definitely here and worryingly a part of her psychic energy. It almost seemed like they were the voices of those she'd freed. Which wouldn't make sense unless... her title was actually bearing conceptual power.
She supposed that it was possible then.
"Kashaunta," Penny said.
"Yes?"
"Why do you have faith in me, when, as you say, so many others have failed?"
"Because you possess Cardinality. You possess Humanity. You even have a Progenitor Title, though it is only a budding one. Your approach to this, besides a few mistakes on our part, is remarkably sound. You have moved away from hatred of the Sprilnav to that of Elders. And you have moved away from hatred of Elders and Progenitors to that of certain Elders and Progenitors, which I understand.
Ultimately, you have me convinced that you do not want to carry out a war of vengeance against me and my kin for the actions we did before your species had a name. I know it is difficult to overcome hatred, and more so with a voice in your head telling you to distrust all we Elders say and do. And I believe you can convince the Alliance to restrict its war to methods that are not as destructive."
Penny thought it was odd how much Kashaunta was stressing it. Either the Alliance wasn't considered a threat to the Sprilnav or it was. Kashaunta seemed to suggest it was, perhaps, to flatter Penny somehow. She didn't exactly buy it but would let it play out.
It would be important for Penny to learn more about the Elder's viewpoint before the Judgment to exploit it among other Elders to help win the Judgment. She'd have to portray herself and the Alliance as weak, which meant learning more about Sprilnav technology and power. The briefings from the last meetings before the previous Judgment had been enlightening on that front. But Penny wanted the best shot she could have on this.
"Such as?"
"Culture war."
"That has a certain meaning among my species," Penny said. "I am not sure if it translates correctly."
"I want your Alliance to begin to turn the population against slavery. Just that. Go no further. If you do that, the Elders will fight back. This will escalate, and the list of grievances will grow. We will have rebellions, and they can win with my help."
"And what comes next?"
"I take power, of course. I do not purge the Sprilnav who rose to the top, but reward them. I bind them by respect and loyalty instead of fear and hatred. Objectively, it will be better to have a single unified state than a disparate mess of warring territories. Quality of life, quality of death, and everything in between. We can go further, if you like.
Turning the Collective into literal heaven for those who die, where they can return to real bodies as often as they want for free. I can extend this to other species and, over thousands of years, wear away the animosity between the Sprilnav and the rest of the galaxy. I distribute gifts, I lower taxes, and use android labor to replace slavery entirely. Would you not agree that this is better?"
"I am not sure. How would you maintain the state, when threats come from within and without?"
"Limits on power, separation of branches of government. Police forces, military forces. We have police trained to de-escalate situations, even when they are armed with riot shields or actual guns. There will obviously be some requirement for state violence, but I will lower it as far as possible."
"There will be those who wish to be independent."
"And they can be."
"You are not concerned about that?" Penny asked.
"With even just the Autonomous Peoples' Stars, independence is risky. Dangerous. People do not start those movements because if they succeed, they get invaded by a border power. Earth has seen that happen in its history, particularly with Europe and Asia. Luna would have seen it as well by now, if not for the First Contact. The problem is the power disparity. Going from the passive backing of 500 thousand planets and a central militarized state to that of maybe 4 or 5 planets with disjointed connections and only garrison supplies is a massive drop."
"But with your plan, there would be no border powers."
"There would be, of course," Kashaunta said. "There must be. Nations without a significant outside threat, that is at least somewhat credible, have a more difficult time staying united. Without a 'them' it is more difficult to define an 'us,' as we know very well."
"That is quite a cold way of looking at reality."
"Those who do otherwise are smears of gore amongst the black of space, or rotting in the ground of their home planets. Elders do not remain Elders by stupidity alone. Eventually, a few lessons must be learned."
"Must?"
"Must, even if they are later forgotten."
Kashaunta let out a sigh. "You and I, Penny. We are vastly different people. I admire your idealism, and I envy it. But when it comes to control of societies and curation of national identities, I have a vast array of experience."
"You do," Penny agreed. "The Pact says we should not lie to each other, so I will no longer dance around my reasons for my misgivings. I do not trust you because you are everything that has ruined the fortunes of my species in the past, often promising things like you do. Security before freedom, usually. You are rich. You are very far above most Sprilnav and even most Elders. You are a politician and a state leader. History tells me to be wary of such people, especially when they possess high amounts of power. Authoritarian countries can, with proper management, outpace those which are not by refusing to limit themselves by morals and ethics.
You are a queen, a monarch. This title goes back to the days of barbarity among our kind, when we believed people were superior based on bloodlines and genetics, sometimes to the extreme of actual inbreeding. You are highly experienced with manipulation, having billions of years of experience. I likely would not know whether you are manipulating me, and even Nilnacrawla has billions of years less experience with Elders than you would on account of his separation from Sprilnav society for so long.
I have no other trustworthy sources for what you say and do. I am surrounded only by enemies, neutral people, and you and Lecalicus alone as actual allies. Truth be told, there is nothing that will stop you from going back on all that you say because people like you have made promises not to before. And they did it anyway.
Companies. Nations. People. With a galaxy full of sentient minds all seemingly built on the same energy and manners of thinking, I see just another politician trying to get in good with me because I can get her what she wants. I fear that, Kashaunta. I fear it a lot. More than I have ever said and ever shown. It is a fear so visceral it colors my view of your entire species.
Because if you've lived a billion years, who's to say you haven't done this all before? How many aliens you've offered this honor, only to cast aside when they die fighting impossible enemies? And yes, my fear of you is that you will betray me. That is a deep-seated and personal matter that I will not explore at this time, but betrayal is something I guard against with all my might.
I hate that you have so much power over me, that I know it, and that you know it. You could enslave me for the next ten days, and I'd do it, to save my species. The Judgment trial is another way of showing the powerlessness of the galaxy before the Sprilnav, the powerlessness of the Alliance before the Sprilnav, and me before you, Justicar, and Yasihaut. Because guess what? I can win this. It will be hard, but I can do it because I set my mind to it, and my mind is my will, and my will is my iron fortress, my gauntleted fist, and my beating heart.
I can, I will, I must. But through all of this, guess what happens if I win the Judgment? Yasihaut files another one. I am strong, Kashaunta. Stronger than any human in history. But even now, inside your sanctum, inside the greatest ship I have ever seen, I remain powerless against the might of your people and your laws. I hear you talk of millennia and galaxies and think of how much I have struggled over the mere ten thousand star systems of the Alliance and this single planet's slave problem. There's billions more.
I have fought against odds beyond comprehension, but even now, I have to break bread with my enemy so that I can continue to survive in the system they built. Because with all that you are, it is impossible for me to see you as anything but an enemy. I cannot understand the value of the Pact. I can only guess at it. But the galaxy's weight is resting upon my shoulders, and my back is bowing. My spine... is breaking. How much more? How many more?
I hate what this universe is. I hate how it is structured. I hate the concepts, the Progenitors, the speeding space entities, and whoever else controls it. For a person to even condone the mindless suffering in this universe is an act of utter insanity. When I see you in your ivory castle, perched upon your mountains of gold, I think of the poor. I think of the justice you deserve that I cannot carry out because of the very power you wield. Do you know how angry that makes me? Do you know that my dreams are still sometimes haunted by Yasihaut's torture? I am a broken person, Kashaunta.
Broken by the weight of who I am and all I must do. But you, you get to sit here and eat, oblivious or indifferent to my suffering. Because you cannot stand to look down for fear of seeing the filth in your claws. I dream of your death, Kashaunta. And a thousand more. I want to tear down your civilization and all others like it. I want to kill, and maim, and murder. I want to be that indomitable power which all others fear and respect.
I want to mount Yasihaut's head on a spear and shove another between Nova's eyes for the crime of daring to use their ultimate power against me. And I want to kill you, too, for being the one I am forced to rely on to survive. For your own power being what forces me to bow and scrape to yet another master. This is why I bear my hatred for your kin, Kashaunta. Why I hate the Elders, the Progenitors, all of it. Because of the inherent unfairness of the galaxy you have built and the banal and insidious evil you have built it upon. I hate you, this galaxy, this universe.
Because you all will never get the justice you deserve, because I cannot repay the sheer weight of atrocity hanging from your heads. And to make you feel what you all deserve, would naturally require me to have the same punishment. Because I can't win without sinking to your level, either by being one of you Elders or having to use your ill-gotten power for my own benefit. I am climbing the mountain, the air is cold, the night is dark, the wind is blowing, and the ice is slick. I stand on the precipice of death, as does all I have known and loved.
To save them, I must use you, an Elder buoyed by an ocean of blood, merely so I can float up a little higher, perhaps to the next cliff or perhaps to that mountain peak. I believe I am fighting for the people. For freedom, justice, and the rights of my kind to self-determination. And to do so, I must sacrifice my own freedom. My own justice. And my own self-determination. All for winning a pointless case, against a stupid Elder who I'd press against a block of red-hot metal, just so I could enjoy her screams. I was a woman, once. A simple woman, a good human.
Now I am a monster. I have killed. I have avoided killing when I should not have. Yasihaut is still alive. Ikirshi is still alive. Tiglath is still alive. Nova is still alive. Azeri is still alive, too, even if his name is dead. Look what I am, and what I've had to do to get here. What will I have to do to continue? I am evil now. Because I will compromise my principles, and claim to fight for freedom while happily breaking bread with an Elder who openly espouses galactic domination. And I can't even say no, for fear of what that would mean for those I know and love.
I am broken, but I can still move. I can still think. And I can still hate. None of you have the right to stand against justice, but I do not have the power to make you kneel to it. Instead, I am being forced into this yet again. I deserve to die for what I am and what I have done, but I cannot because of who and what I fight for. I will only descend into worse depravity. When I am free of the Judgment, I will likely kill the slavers and enjoy it. Because that is what I am becoming now. I'm becoming you. Just as you said I would, proving that I'm powerless even against that."
Thick tears fell from Penny's eyes. With no one else but the Elder in the room and a currently fulfilled promise of no cameras, sound recording devices, and not even guards, only Kashaunta would know how much it pained Penny to say all this aloud. The pain doubled her over as the weight of her realization came to her.
Kashaunta let her be, waiting for Penny's tears to finally run dry. It was an ugly thing. All of the past trauma and misery came roaring back, drowning Penny in a sea of torment and suffering. Cardi and Nilncrawla were powerless to stop it. Her soul ached. Her mind shook.
At least, Penny drew a rasping breath. "So. Now you know, Kashaunta."
"I do," the Elder said. "I can tell you have many feelings on the matter. We don't have to continue discussion."
"You're not upset?"
"No," Kashaunta said. "Not at all. Why should I be? You bared your soul to me in this truth, Penny. Knowing the power I do hold over you, you did so anyway. This only proves that I was right to trust you and your strength."
"This isn't strength. I sat here and cried like a little girl."
"It took strength for you to admit how you feel and why, especially to me. To trust that I would listen, and to express exactly why you wish for me and my kin to die."
"You seem... oddly okay with me wanting to kill you."
"Because I have been surrounded by people who wanted to kill me before. Only one of them, in the long history of my life, admitted such to this extent before making their attempts, and that is you. I understand and respect your motive for wanting me dead, actually. I would feel the same way in your position. You are right. The way things are is not fair, and is not just. I also know that you won't kill me if you have the chance."
"Why do you think that?"
"Well, you do not seem the type to kill your allies, unless they directly betray you. I will not pretend that I am innocent. But do you truly think that you will be able to look me in the eyes, your main supporter among all my kind, and stab me in the heart? Because if you do kill me, I would at least request the honor of you doing it with your own hands. Or even the Soul Blade, if you wish to be poetic about it."
"So no lobbing asteroids of antimatter at you, then?" Penny laughed.
"I would think not, though if we are at that point, the future is lost anyway. To grapple with your past, present and future is a part of life, Penny. This right here is the reason I made the Pact with you. Because you are an honest person, with the will to do what is necessary, and the power to carry it out."
"But you'll be preparing contingencies to kill me, won't you?"
"No," Kashaunta said. "We are past that now."
"You act as if your life is already ending. A once in a billion years Pact with a human, acting like you won't protect yourself from a person who wants to murder you, and being uncaring about your legacy. Why?"
"Because it is you or nothing, Penny. I have lived over 13 billion years. I have had more than a full life. I have made my peace with death. Not the man himself, obviously, but the idea of it. We stand at the crossroads. I will wait no longer for the rot to keep spreading."
"So you will back me in the Judgment, then."
"More than that," Kashaunta said. "I am willing to be your lawyer, and represent you in this trial. If you accept, that is."
"I would, but I must ask you one question. Do you even care about the Alliance beyond what we could do to help you?"
"Yes, and no. I care about their idealism, and that they have AIs with high levels of cognitive power. I care that they recognise the value of Sprilnav lives as more than collateral damage, which is why their war plans only blow up our planets if they lose and are about to go extinct. Humanity and the hivemind are mainly valuable to me because they are valuable to you, the same with the rest of the Alliance. But they to have the ability to put a decent bureaucracy in place, through Phoebe and Edu'frec, or even the hivemind if it expands."
"Would you care if we lost?"
"Yes, though I can force myself not to if I must."
It seemed like an honest assessment of the situation. There was one more thing.
"Are you actually a lawyer, then? And are you skilled with Judticar's laws? It's quite touching that you're still willing to vouch for me, but if you don't have any sort of law degree, I can't exactly accept that."
"Yes to both. While I don't have an Eonic degree, I do have several thousand years of legal studies, with about a hundred in Justicar law."
"Would that actually be sufficient?"
"Yes. When we Sprilnav say we have put a hundred years into something, that is a raw time. It does not include sleeping, eating, vacations, and so on. My implant tells me I spent 181 years specifically studying Justicar law."
"How did you have time?"
"Delegation is a valuable skill for the sanity of country leaders."
"I suppose," Penny said. "Do you think that you and I appearing together in court would be detrimental to my case?"
"The only avenue they could pursue is that you've 'turned' me to your side. But seeing as I am extremely powerful and have refused bribes of inconceivable amounts of wealth, that narrative will be poorly accepted by all but the most biased of Judges. Or High Judges, as the case will be. Unfortunately, I do not qualify as either a Judge or High Judge, but my credentials and power are more than sufficient for them to be unable to block my ability to represent you. You have, as Nilnacrawla may have told you, already paid me for your services. Your linear singularities are more stable than I thought."
"So the money finally shows itself again," Penny smiled.
Kashaunta shared her grin. "Yes. That it does. You are surprisingly profitable as a bonus."
"I'm sure everything else I do is the bonus. Like making the other nations end slavery."
"Well, that would actually make them more productive."
"So why..."
"Elders love feeling powerful. They love having power over others, and being able to show it. They are generally insecure, their brains polluted by eons of paranoia and propaganda. The weakness of Elders is something that the powers that be use to exploit them."
"And your ego?"
"They have to prove their superiority to themselves. I live and breathe it with every step I take in this galaxy."
Penny sighed. "That is an impressive level of narcissism."
"That word didn't translate."
"It is a way to say a person admires themself to an unnatural and unhealthy degree."
"Then it would describe me, except the degree is quite healthy and natural. Elders' egos also help to keep us going. Reputation isn't just an external motivation."
Penny nodded. "We still must discuss your approach toward people in general later. But we have other priorities, don't we?"
"The Judgment," Kashaunta agreed. "You and Yasihaut will attend the Fort Court, and will be even better protected than last time. The Underground beneath it is continually pulverized, as it sits on a mostly active volcanic system, with lava outlets designed to ensure tunneling is impossible. The mindscape side fortifications are similarly impressive, and Justicar has spent a considerable amount of money on ensuring the security of this Judgment.
His reputation hinges on it greatly, even more so as he is there in person as a Judge. This makes him more vulnerable than usual. But if you kill his body, he will live. I do not suggest you try it, however. What I aim to do is present an argument that the premise of the Judgment trial is flawed, as there is limited legal proof that you and the Alliance are a threat to the Sprilnav.
To do this, I have already helped to secure two things for you. The treaty with Valisada and the Pact of Blades with me. These items will ensure the common scrutiny and arguments used against aliens will be ineffective. You have proven yourself capable of adhering to and participating in our customs, especially the ones related to trust and binding agreements. You also have wisely avoided killing any Sprilnav for a while. This, especially in the context of the slaves and the 85th Grand Fleet, will be massively beneficial to your argument.
Beyond this, I also have an array of legal evidence to challenge Yasihaut if she brings up your hatred of her, or the previous Judgment's outcome, or the battle that crippled the Progenitors. Indrafabar will be helpful to us, as he will defend the honor of his kin. He will not allow the argument of you being as strong as the Progenitors be seriously considered. No matter what you say or what people think, this will be a question of whether you can convince Indrafabar and Justicar of your ability to be peaceful, and behind that the Alliance.
You will find it harder to defend the rhetoric the Alliance has put out, but I have secured this portion of the Judgment with my defensive agreements with them as well. You both are anchored to me and my reputation too strongly for any of them to ignore, which is yet another reason why I am hoping to help defend you in person."
"So you are staking your own reputation on me, too. Is that another reason you did the Pact?"
"It is. The reputational blow losing this Judgment could have will not be enough to topple me. But it is a catalyst. It is capable of starting a chain of downfall events that lead to my dethroning or even my death. I am aware of this and am doing what I can to stave off that process and shore up all my defenses. I also have a lawyer with an Eonic degree in Justicar law who will be the main defender of your argument.
My presence in the court will be for your protection and as a reminder of the fact that you have a backer, and that backer is me. I expect Yasihaut's counterparts to undertake a similar process, though she will find it easier due to her being an Elder. I will introduce you to him in ten minutes."
"That is very kind of you, Kashaunta. I know that we have had our differences, and that your past is quite a contentious thing. But if I put all of that aside, and look at you as you are here, and now, I am grateful that you are doing all of this for me and my people. I do not know whether I can repay you for the Pact of Blades, but your conviction and intelligence are traits I admire."
"You are welcome, Penny. I know I cannot atone. But I will help you build a better galaxy, just as it should be."
Penny patted her on the hed, and turned her gaze to the opposite wall.
"I'm afraid," she admitted.
"Fear in this situation is natural. There is no shame in it. Your strength will allow you to work through it. Whether it is the strength you carry in your soul, or that which your father and Cardinality bring with them. You can do this, Penny. We can win."
"And if Yasihaut files another Judgment?"
Kashaunta gave her a dark grin. "I have a plan for that, too. When the Pact of Blades is revealed in the court, my abilities to aid you will widen considerably. They will understand, and if not, Indrafabar will teach them. He was there, after all."
"And this isn't witness tampering or whatever?"
"That doesn't exist here," Kashaunta said. "Justicar's laws do not include that. He enforces that by his soft power. It makes things more fair between Elders, but not between Elders and others. As is by design."
"Kashaunta," Penny said. "While you are an okay person, by your current deeds, I can't really say I'm not going to take the guy with a billion years of legal education over your scant hundred."
"I do not need to be your main lawyer, I just need to have the job listed as such in the courtroom. If he requires it, the lawyer will speak over me and you in all matters."
"You and I, you mean?"
"I do not mean," Kashaunta said. "My language does not always follow your grammatical rules."
"Speaking of that, during the Pact, you spoke a language we couldn't translate for a bit."
"Can you repeat it?"
"'Eis nama kaste Penny Balica, sun lanci Dorima Kashaunta. Ko'ri, lanci nupa bes na Dorima'Pecunyanova. Sp'rkial'nova. Homo Sapiens.' And then you said, 'Tol, nopa shikai.'"
"It roughly means: 'This act is between Penny Balica and the Elder Kashaunta. Now, we are in the claws of the Progenitors. Sp'rkial'nova. Homo Sapiens.' And the second part means 'take it or leave it,' or more accurately 'take or leave.' That's about what I said."
"So Dorima means Elder, and Dorima'Pecunyanova means Progenitor?"
"Yes. The specific translation is 'mourning one' and 'mourning god' for those terms. Pecunyanova was the very first Progenitor, and Nova's grandfather, which he took a piece of the name of. Nova took in the powers of his entire family line when he became a Progenitor, including Pecunyanova's title of Everlasting."
"I can sense a deeper meaning beyond the mourning."
"The type of 'mourning' that the ancient language describes is a soul agony, of the type which drives the happiest souls to suicide and the most evil souls to tears. There are many more descriptions given to the agony of remembering the Source war, which is what defines the name. We mourn our species, our empires, our lost galaxies, and even the aliens that once lived with us. Imagine you were on Earth, and you had a nuclear war. No shields, no bunkers.
And all that survived the aftermath, the starvation and the proxy wars over the scraps that remained, was the equivalent of a single village. That is how close we are to extinction, Penny. Progenitors went mad with grief. Entire cities voted to activate nuclear arsenals upon themselves. 70 whole Grand Fleets drove straight into the black hole at the center of the galaxy, never to return. It is a trauma... a trauma difficult to even describe now, with over 99.99% of my memories of that war strictly sealed away.
By the end of it, we were burning reality itself to try and burn the Source to ash. We weaponized linear singularities, sending them deep into the Source's flesh. We opened spatial rifts in that bastard's galaxy-sized body. We live in a false vacuum, Penny. Our scientists learned that, and harnessed that. We sent weapons at the Source capable of writing entire concepts out of reality and capable of changing reality itself to kill. Weapons outright banned between the universal superpowers were thrown like chaff in the wind. The fear and madness of that time... nothing comes close to it.
And it is another reason why we commit so many atrocities. Because we have lost our power, any way of feeling like we still have even a scrap of it is irresistible. Others have fallen to the sweet bliss of drugs, or the digital equivalent. More Sprilnav than are alive now by a million times are stored in databanks, waiting for us to build a new universal empire."
"And... the Source?"
"The cursed thing lived. A mockery to us all, one which we know we are powerless to do anything about. It could come here even now and crush my flagship between its skin cells. It could crush this entire galaxy by wading through it in a few years. And no, it does not know or care about little things like the speed of light. It broke causality in many of its battles without care for those it killed. And what you don't know is that the Source war wasn't the first time people tried to kill it.
Other universal powers did and drove it back with lesser weapons than what we used. But power that could force it away did nothing when it came for us. That burning, blinding hatred. It was hell, Penny. And what is left behind is almost as bad. And let me say that almost as bad in this case is still constant agony. Constant misery. I was one of them once. One of the Elders that hated everyone in the universe for the crime of being happy after such a horrendous fall.
I killed many people. I destroyed planets. I killed children, babies, and smashed eggs with my own claws. In person. The depths of what I sank to are beyond depraved and evil, Penny. I refuse to lose hope again. This is why I am here, now, backing you. I cannot atone, but I can rebuild. The Source will feed you its lies but do not forget what it is. Who it is. And what it has done to us."
"Your retelling is not fully accurate," Exile said.
"I am aware of that, speeding space entity. I told the most complete story I know, and will not bring back millions of years of agony just to give a better one. It is not safe for her."
"How would it be unsafe for me?" Penny asked.
"Because I would go insane and kill you, obviously."
"And the Pact of Blades?"
"Unless the Progenitors got here in time, you'd still die. They'd kill me next, with only a slight difficulty if only one is sent, and that one is not Nova. No bond is truly unbreakable, but that is what it would take for me to break the Pact of Blades. I... my mind is built on a foundation of ash. Turn that ash back to wood, and the center will fall through."
Penny moved closer to Kashaunta. She moved her arm over Kashaunta's back. "I'm sorry."
"Thank you."

2024.05.17 06:46 Sea_Detail6175 Movies that leave you speechless by the end, that leave you staring at a wall after you shut the TV off.

You know that feeling when you finish a movie and you don’t even know what to do after you watch it? It leaves you feeling discombobulated and you kind of just linger once you shut off the TV. Maybe it’s a movie that made you think deeply, where you know because you watched it your perspective on life was changed, it brought up emotions (positive or negative) or made you reflect, or it was just profound in whatever way to you. I’m looking for these types of movies in literally whatever genre.
A handful of these to me have been the Matrix movies, Mulholland Drive (2001), Brazil (1985), EEAAO (2022), Dead Poets Society (1989), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), and Aftersun (2022). I know these movies are all so different from each other but I’m really open to whatever genres. I’d just love to know movies that have had a lasting impact on other people’s lives. 😊
Thanks for any recommendations!

2024.05.17 06:35 Feisty-Tip912 Throw away but I think it’s time

I’ve been caught in all my lies before my current relationship. I have some success but tons more failures. It all came crashing down and I’m at rock bottom now. My gun or a cliff near by with no warning. Whatever’s easier. To my students… kids… and family I’m not worth it. I was never the man my dad was despite him going to prison and I’ll never live up to the pedastol you put your dad on mom. I tried but society is set for men to fail. I’m going to work through this next month and leave as much as I can behind. But I’m done… I’m dead inside wand out. Therapy and talking through it doesn’t change my failures. I love you Amanda, Lilly, and Leia. You guys deserve a real man a real dad a real success not a failure like I am.

2024.05.17 06:32 sattukachori Animal cruelty is symptom of a sick society.

Following is the copy paste of a Facebook letter written by a Chinese cat abuser. This is a vent, trauma dumping as you can see from reading it. There is so much vent about education, income, social status and calling uneducated people cockroach. This is symptom of social pressure and social hierarchy that results in mental illnesses like this. There is a book called tyranny of meritocracy about this issue. https://www.reddit.com/AnimalRights/comments/1coy03abuser_made_a_new_yt_a_channel/
Translated Post 2 Dated 12/18/23. This guy serves as a great example of how people who discriminate against animals usually discriminate against people too, due to reasons like race, level of education, nationality, sex, religion, etc. How a person treats animals tells you everything you need to know about their values, moral code, and personal ethics.
There is nothing wrong with discrimination based on educational background - people with low educational background have no right to life. Educational discrimination is correct
I am working hard (studying) in the following order: graduate school graduate > undergraduate graduate > vocational school graduate > high school graduate.
There are some retarded people who make nonsense of nonsense like There are criminals even among highly educated people'' andThere are successful people even after high school graduates.''
There is no doubt that the percentage of decent people who are highly educated is overwhelmingly higher. Although there are rare people with low educational background who are successful, the proportion is almost an exception.
And even if a person is successful, a person with a low educational background will only have the characteristics that are appropriate for a person with a low educational background.
Junior high school graduation is out of the question. They probably don't even understand whether it's okay or wrong to kill someone. Unlike you low-educated people, I have never interacted with high school graduates and junior high school graduates. I honestly don't know the details
Another nonsense is ``I couldn't go to university because my family was poor.'' All I can say is, "What is this scholarship system for? Garbage."
By the way, overseas societies have higher educational backgrounds than Japan. It can be said that life is determined by educational background in the United States, Britain, China, and South Korea as well. In fact, Japan is by far the most undervalued country among developed countries.
A cockroach, a weakling with no talent or educational background, is barking "Japan is..." Even in Japan, Japs are a loser, and if they were born in Europe, America, China, or South Korea, they would just die or become criminals. A little yellow monkey wouldn't even be able to be used as a criminal. Japan itself is declining because people are talking about rescuing such garbage weak people.p
There is a correlation between educational background and life expectancy, but this is more pronounced in the United States. Black people have significantly shorter lifespans than white people. This can be said to be because so many black people have low levels of education. This proves that America is a society with an academic background that cannot be compared to Japan. I mean, black people are just an inferior species lol
What is Japan's educational society that allows junior high school graduates to live a leisurely life? There is no need for people with low education to have the right to live. It would be better to send the pests known as low education that live in Japan to developing countries. And it would be good to only recruit people with talent and academic background from overseas.
Japan will definitely enter its golden age again.
The true story of Uncle Cal ~Abuse of feeding a cat~
A story of the good and evil of a pest
I can't stop crying lol
Then there is a dead link to a YT video, which I assume was removed when this creep's last account got deleted.
The more text:
You pathetic cockroach with a low education level is pathetic lol
It's fun to use Tor to troll the cat-loving community lol
Life with cats #I want to connect with cat lovers #Makoto Oya #Cat abuse #Cat abuse incident #Animal welfare #Animal love error #Cat #Cat #Uncle Cal
The world would be a little better if there were no less educated people.
The author has a Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo → PU I have never had any attachment to anyone else. Unless you have a standard deviation score of 80 or higher, a science major, >and a Ph.D. degree, you will not be recognized as a human being.
Animal lover (cat lover) Disabled/Black people the weak/poor Such things are filth that is not worth living.
Diversity and preferential treatment of inferior species rots society. In a world where only the strong exist, living things are what make the species better. Inferior genes should be eliminated
Apparently a cat abuse group is organized in China. These guys are really crazy (compliment)
He says he makes a lot of money by selling videos. Their monthly income is definitely higher than your annual income. If I'm not good at it, it could be more than my lifetime wage.
Ah, the majority of cat lovers are trash and unemployed to begin with lol What? You're saying that a lot, low-educated people. Sex cannot be corrected even if it is regulated.
No matter what, there is a demand for sadistic content. Moreover, the members are openly using SNS. It feels real when you say things like "I love dogs" However, when I tried to interact with him a little, he seemed more decent than the less educated Japs. Abusers can respond in a much more normal way than basic love and error. I'm not justifying abuse, but when I look at it as a human being. Love and error is at a level that can be said to be less than an animal than a member of society.
Social misfits should be filial to their parents before protecting animals, shame on them. There isn't even a single tall, highly educated person working on animal welfare. There are an overwhelming number of small people, low education, low income, and ugly people. In fact, you're the one being protected. Well, won't anyone take away filth like you guys?

2024.05.17 04:17 Expensive_Peach32 Historically, have there been any big victories for women/society won by radical feminism?

I am gonna be honest, radical feminism is not something I am super well read on so if I say something that is incorrect, feel free to correct me. Typically when someone talks about radical feminism, I think of things like political lesbianism, anti-pornography, and female separatism, ideas that have basically failed as far as I know. In the present day, many of the radical feminists I have encountered either endorse some form of biological essentialism regarding gender, or outright TERF rhetoric, two things that I think are a net negative for society. Because of this, I have in the past tended to view radical feminism as something as an ideological dead end as opposed to a serious force for social change. Am I incorrect in this? Have there been times in the past where radical feminism has helped women in a way that other schools of feminism have not?

2024.05.17 03:56 sunnytailduck215 60년 전 어느 정치인의 연설(A politician's speech 60 years ago)

"....Now let's set the record straight. There's no argument over the choice between peace and war, but there's only one guaranteed way you can have peace - and you can have it in the next second - surrender.
Admittedly, there's a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement, and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face, that their policy of accommodation is appeasement, and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand, the ultimatum. And what then, when Nikita Khrushchev has told his people he knows what our answer will be? He has told them that we're retreating under the pressure of the Cold War, and someday when the time comes to deliver the final ultimatum, our surrender will be voluntary, because by that time we will have been weakened from within spiritually, morally, and economically. He believes this because from our side he's heard voices pleading for "peace at any price" or "better Red than dead," or as one commentator put it, he'd rather "live on his knees than die on his feet." And therein lies the road to war, because those voices don't speak for the rest of us.
You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. If nothing in life is worth dying for, when did this begin - just in the face of this enemy? Or should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaohs? Should Christ have refused the cross? Should the patriots at Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard 'round the world? The martyrs of history were not fools, and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Nazis didn't die in vain. Where, then, is the road to peace? Well it's a simple answer after all.
You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, "There is a price we will not pay." "There is a point beyond which they must not advance." And this - this is the meaning in the phrase of Barry Goldwater's "peace through strength." Winston Churchill said, "The destiny of man is not measured by material computations. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we're spirits - not animals." And he said, "There's something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty."
You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.
We'll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we'll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness...."
-A Time for Choosing Speech, October 27, 1964, Ronald Reagan
(It may be the instigation of an old ideology, which was 60 years ago and is not appropriate for the current world situation, but the intention of this speech may be what was necessary for the 'south Korea', who is already late.)
(South Korean politicians fell for the temptation of "supporting forces," and The generation, which was the mainstay of the economy, embraced female employees younger than them due to false libido and willingly accepted the sweet temptation offered by women instead of selling themselves.)
(Soon after, they conspired with the "mainstream men of society" in exchange for their bodies, holding the breath of young men, and what young men heard from their seniors, respected teachers, fathers, and grandfathers was an order of surrender and retreat, saying, "Don't rebel against women, don't be a man and bully women cowardly, and rather obey women than protest against women.")
(Of course, there were men who obeyed their words and started a family. But now, as most people know, they are living a life of regret after losing all of their private property, their children and social foundations.)
(However, they-women-licked the balls of the "mainstream men" and treated defeated men as bugs, and now they don't hesitate to mock and toy with not only their own men but also foreign men.)
나거한의 시선에서는 그게 '정당한 여성들의 권리'라고 생각할지는 모르지만 그쪽은 어떻게 생각합니까?(From the perspective of South Korean vested interests and women, you may think it is a "right women's right," but what do you think?)
이런 사회와 나라는 응당 없어져버리는게 전세계를 위해서라도 좋지 않을까? (Wouldn't it be good to extinguish this society and country for the whole world?)

Tortured Poets—and wolves?—take us from 1989 TV to reputation TV
Amid all my attempts to tie The Tortured Poets Department to literature, poems, and the rest of Taylor Swift’s discography, I missed one of the most obvious references possible. With the song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” as a play on titles of other works—namely, “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?Taylor Swift is calling herself a wolf.
If Taylor Swift is calling herself a wolf, and that wolf is a dangerous force to be reckoned with, I wondered where else in her filmography or discography Swift has referenced or even identified with wolves, so I set out to see if there is a common (queer) thread tying it together.
Swift directly references wolves just three times in her lyrical discography: “Daylight” from Lover and “Guilty as Sin?” and “The Prophecy” from The Tortured Poets Department, plus the indirect reference in the “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” song title, also from Tortured Poets. However, the first time we meet wolves in Swift’s catalog is in the “Out of the Woods” music video from 1989, where our rabbit hole begins.
My thesis: Tortured Poets is the mourning warning for what’s to come on reputation (Taylor's Version), and this is tied together by wolves and light versus dark imagery being threaded from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) through Tortured Poets, in addition to the scenery of the woods, underwater, and the beach. All of this is ultimately leading us out of the woods and into the daylight to fully understand reputation (Taylor's Version) through the lens of Tortured Poets.

Are we out of the woods yet?

We first see wolves in the “Out of the Woods” music video. A pack of snarling wolves is chasing Swift through a dark forest, even shredding her evening gown (hello, "The Alcott") trying to attack her. Once she emerges from the woods, Swift and the wolves run through a snowy landscape, but it becomes unclear whether Swift is running from or with the wolves. By the end of the music video, Swift and the wolves appear to coexist.
Taylor Swift in the \"Out of the Woods\" music video
Swift re-released 1989 in 2023, and the lyric video for “Out of the Woods (Taylor’s Version)” shows the exact tour visuals from the 1989 World Tour. The visuals show two wolves running through the dark forest along a body of water that shows their reflections. There are multiple “twos” throughout the lyric video (which have been flashed incessantly during the Tortured Poets era) but there are a few other notable things. First, the wolves appear to be ghosts or phantoms, transparent and glowing only in the moonlight. Second, the two wolves emerge from the forest together, then leap from the cliff and turn to dust as the song ends.
For reference for anyone who wants to watch all of these:
The duality of the wolves is significant, but the idea of Swift being one of the wolves works nicely when you realize Swift is one of the wolves in the original music video. I interpret the video's message as one only being able to find peace in acceptance, not desertion of, their true selves. The dark versus light motif comes up often in Swift’s discography, and we see it here as Swift coexists with the wolves as one of them in the light. The lyrics speak to the juxtaposition of Swift and the muse as being “in screaming color” versus “the rest of the world [as] black and white.”
Swift “finds herself” on a sunny beach. The version of Swift that has braved and endured the trials and tribulations of the forest, fires, and more reunites with this version of herself. This is the last music video of the seven (! and, of course, "seven" is tied up in this theory later on) released during the original 1989 era, which leads us directly to reputation, namely, “Look What You Made Me Do.”

What did we make her do?

No, Taylor Swift doesn’t reference wolves on reputation or in the song “Look What You Made Me Do,” but reputation is tied to the symbolism of “Out of the Woods.” The LWYMMD music video opens with the version of Swift we saw at the end of OOTW picking up where we left off, except it appears Swift (or at least her reputation, as is displayed on the gravestone) is dead and buried.
Wolves typically represent the untamed, wildness, and freedom. In many adages and fables about wolves, there tends to be a duality, either with wolves versus their domesticated counterparts in dogs or good and light versus evil and dark. For Swift to run from then become a wolf signifies a desire to outrun her own identity—something wild and dangerous—only to accept it and find peace in the light. For Swift to have found this version of herself and come to accept it in OOTW only to see it buried in LWYMMD suggests the thing “we made her do” is kill off that version of herself to save her reputation. I interpret this as a dangerous element of Swift’s self, potentially queerness, being so threatening to her reputation that she was forced to bury or conceal it despite thinking she was finally “out of the woods,” grounding the plane we see Taylor saw the wings off at the end of the music video. Aligned with the Karma/lost album theory, Swift’s plans were scrapped and replaced with reputation, and the thing she sought to do—come out—forced another rebirth in LWYMMD. Swift is notably caged in LWYMMD in an orange jumpsuit reminiscent of a prisoner’s, and there is more caged imagery aligned to wolves later in Swift’s lyrics, especially in the Tortured Poets tracks tied to this theory. More on that soon.
To bring this full circle, I believe this is the reason 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is beach-themed: Swift is reclaiming the union of her two selves that she should have been able to claim post-1989 originally before the events that inspired reputation came to be.
For some more bonus content, the LWYMMD lyric video includes a typewriter that appears to be writing a manuscript for a film or play:
Screenshot from the official LWYMMD lyric video

She only saw daylight

Swift mentions wolves for the very first time in her lyrics on “Daylight,” the last track of Lover, her first owned album and what is thought to be the “coming out” album. (And, in my opinion, the aesthetic no one noticed that forced her to become a non-functioning alcoholic.)
Maybe you ran with the wolves and refused to settle down
Maybe I’ve stormed out of every room in this town
Threw out our cloaks and our daggers because it’s morning now
It’s brighter now, now
To run with the wolves is to live wildly with unbridled freedom, typically against societal norms. In psychology, there is a concept of “women who run with wolves” as women rediscovering their wild and their passions. Several reflections I found on this concept relative to queerness discuss the idea of wolfpacks and tribes, and I see this in “Daylight” as Swift focuses not only on emerging from the darkness herself but bringing someone else with her ("threw out our cloaks and our daggers"), allowing them to abandon the frustration represented by storming out of rooms or the need to run instead of standing in the light.
As we know, sadly, Swift returns to the woods in folklore and evermore after another ruining of her “best-laid plans” despite emerging from a “twenty-year dark night” and “throwing out [her cloak and dagger]” in “Daylight.” On The Eras Tour, the folklore and evermore sets take place in the forest at night under a massive moon similar to the one in the “Out of the Woods” lyric video and original tour visuals for 1989. Swift also famously wears a cloak during the “willow” performance on tour.
Taylor Swift performing \"willow\" on The Eras Tour in a cloak
Following folklore and evermore, Swift released Midnights, a continued commentary on the light versus dark motif representing “thirteen sleepless nights” across Swift’s life. The next references to wolves don’t come until The Tortured Poets Department. There are two, both on songs that (I believe) describe an identity crisis and struggle: “Guilty as Sin?” and “The Prophecy” as well as the indirect reference in “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” that started me down this rabbit hole. As noted above, these songs also reference cages and being trapped.

She (still) dreams of throwing her life to the wolves

The Tortured Poets Department plays with dark and light, a frequent motif in Swift’s discography. While the standard version of the album is represented by white with a relaxed image of Swift’s body literally laid back with a notable ray of sunlight over it, The Anthology is near-black and pictures Swift holding her head in anguish.
Both versions of The Tortured Poets Department official album artwork, representing light versus dark
Swift mentioned that Tortured Poets was written about the “last two years” of her life, and I feel this has been mischaracterized and reduced to focus only on the highly public elements of her love life. Swift likely spent those two years deep in her rerecording process for all four albums following Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version).
During this two-year timespan, we can assume Swift likely recorded Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in addition to their releases, and it is likely that Swift has already recorded reputation (Taylor’s Version) and Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version) in the same timeframe.
For Swift to say that Tortured Poets represents "the end of this chapter of the author’s life" most likely signifies a closing door on a period of deep retrospective. I believe this is the crux of Tortured Poets entirely. I find it probable, not just possible, that much of Tortured Poets references this process and Swift’s experience and feelings unearthing and rerecording these albums. In revisiting those “eras” (or times in her actual life as a human being), I imagine the process to be quite painful. For anyone, revisiting diary entries (or souvenirs as Swift calls them in “The Manuscript”) from painful times in one’s life would be difficult enough, but to rerecord music that may have been so painful for entertainment purposes must be another beast altogether, especially after being essentially forced into the retrospective after her album catalog was stolen from her, or potentially viewing the music you wrote at the time differently through the lens of new perspective… Just, ouch.
As an aside, with both Midnights and Tortured Poets, Swift seems to be making the “paternity testing” she discusses on reputation of her music more difficult, ascribing the periods of the album-writing to broader swaths of time over her life that weave further into her past, perhaps (and likely) referencing more than her love life or what the public knows.
I believe “Guilty as Sin?” refers to the “Out of the Woods” music video. Swift runs from the wolves to save herself, and there’s even a point when Swift jumps off a snowy cliff into the ocean, and it seems Swift dreams about this moment in “Guilty as Sin?” and perhaps the song was even inspired by the 1989 rerecording process.
My boredom's bone deep
This cage was once just fine
Am I allowed to cry?
I dream of cracking locks
Throwing my life to the wolves
Or the ocean rocks
We see the same imagery—Swift seemingly drowning in the ocean—on The Eras Tour during “my tears ricochet,” reminiscent of the “Out of the Woods” imagery. Swift sings MTR right after “illicit affairs,” a song in which Swift tells her muse she would “ruin [herself] a million little times” to be with them, the same phenomenon Swift has been singing about since at least 1989. Swift also sings about her “stolen lullabies” during “my tears ricochet,” tying the song to at least the events that triggered the rerecording process.
Image from live performance of “my tears ricochet” from The Eras Tour (2023) where Swift can be seen falling deeply into the ocean (and potentially not trying to swim or save herself)
Still image from the “Out of the Woods” music video where Swift nearly drowns before finding herself spit out back on the beach
Potentially also notably, the lyric video for “Is It Over Now?” from 1989 even features sheets swirling like the ocean does in the MTR tour visuals.
Image from live performance of “my tears ricochet” from The Eras Tour (2023)
Still image from the “Is It Over Now? (From The Vault)” lyric video
This is notable because during the acoustic set of The Eras Tour, Swift has performed a mashup of “Out of the Woods” and “Is It Over Now?” from 1989 (Taylor’s Version). At the time of writing this post, Swift has sung the mashup twice on her tour, once in Argentina on November 11th—or 11/11, a callback to the doubles and duality concept—and once in Paris on May 10th (which also happened to be the second night of the Paris tour stop, and 10 is a double of 5, for those keeping track at home).

Quick, semi-wolf-related tangent

So we’ve established that OOTW and IION? are connected, and I found yet another song that seems to be referencing the same moment in time as OOTW: “But Daddy I Love Him.” In both songs, Swift and her muse experience “the heat” or a backlash against their relationship, then find a seemingly happy ending: In BDILH, Swift’s parents “came around” to accept the relationship, and in OOTW, the monsters were just trees.
https://preview.redd.it/9avqekl0xv0d1.png?width=2144&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b5f9d232050387ddd7723936568203b6171122b
Linking these three songs, I find it interesting that Swift sings, “But fuck it, it’s over” during BDILH, perhaps an answer to the final track of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) that begs, “Is it over now?” repeatedly.
That’s not where the similarities end, either. There are also two references to the phrase “good name” in Tortured Poets. Merriam-Webster defines a “good name” as a person’s good reputation. This leads me to believe these songs, namely “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” (wolf reference) and “But Daddy I Love Him” directly reference reputation and the scandals that marked the start of the reputation era and what the Lover era tried (yet failed again) to accomplish.
https://preview.redd.it/up1tjgc7xv0d1.png?width=1970&format=png&auto=webp&s=963e0bac1f837ff6f9f845bf789dcae75f021b5f
As a side note, her “good name” could also be a double entendre nod to Swift’s other upcoming rerecorded album, Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version), in a very meta sense of the phrase, which would represent a country album that would likely be less well-received coming from an openly queer artist.

Back to the wolves

The last time Swift mentions wolves is in “The Prophecy,” a song from The Anthology version of Tortured Poets, comparing herself to a wolf howling.
A greater woman stays cool
But I howl like a wolf at the moon
And I look unstable
Gathered with a coven round a sorceress' table
Swift fights against fate, howling at the moon. The coven and sorceress’ table call back to the cloaks and daggers Swift threw out in “Daylight,” signaling that she has found herself yet again in the darkness or night which, of course, is the only time the moon would be visible to howl at.
As an aside, this is not dissimilar from the picture she paints of herself in “seven” from folklore, screaming “ferociously anytime [she] wanted,” another song tied to 1989 via The Eras Tour in which Swift had previously (and has now removed) a “seven” x “Wildest Dreams” spoken interlude (or poem!) before the folklore set, further linking the two albums with the woods and darkness motifs, as well as the concept of “wildness” in both songs.
Overall, “The Prophecy” seems to describe the version of Swift we see in the “Out of the Woods” music video before she reaches acceptance. Swift is constantly battling against natural elements and forces, fighting back against her true and fated self or the path she finds herself on.
There is, however, still a happy ending. The wolves eventually reach the end of the woods together. The heat dies down, the monsters are just trees, and the parents come around. What “The Prophecy” represents are the moments when that journey through the woods seems neverending, not necessarily Swift's current feelings about her life.

It’s (almost) over

When discussing her short film for “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” Swift talks about how she would have been unable to create this kind of art without the perspective she’s gained in the years since. The fictionalized version of Swift in Tavi Gevinson’s “Fan Fiction” also comments on the “Taylor’s Version” element of the rerecording, which I find to be an apt description of what it must be like to create and have others consume the art in this context—that listeners should be made to feel uncomfortable with the added context that has come from the retrospective wisdom of the artist in hindsight.
In it, Swift says:
Her unrealistic expectations should only emphasize the gulf between their experiences. Her capacity for remembering, compared to his, is a symptom of youth. And her need for control, to tell the story, might also be seen as a trauma response. The line “The idea you had of me—who was she?” indicates that he was the first to dehumanize-by-idealizing. It should be unsettling to relisten to the 2012 version with the understanding that they had been living in his fantasy.
(Don't even get me started on "Fan Fiction." Or do. Maybe it'll be fun.)
In summary, my theory is this: Inserting Tortured Poets between the sequential release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and reputation (Taylor’s Version) serves as the necessary lens and context to properly read reputation for what it is and what it represents to Taylor Swift. Not only is Tortured Poets a commentary on fame, identity, and this highly vulnerable process and moment she finds herself in, but the lens through which all her rerecordings must be listened to through.

2024.05.17 03:19 BrandonBollingers Terrifying Full Text Harrison Butker Speech

Unsnark: I can’t believe we are swinging so far in this direction. Please vote!
Ladies and gentlemen of the Class of 2024: I would like to start off by congratulating all of you for successfully making it to this achievement today. I'm sure your high school graduation was not what you had imagined, and most likely, neither was your first couple years of college.
By making it to this moment through all the adversity thrown your way from COVID, I hope you learned the important lessons that suffering in this life is only temporary. As a group, you witnessed firsthand how bad leaders who don't stay in their lane can have a negative impact on society. It is through this lens that I want to take stock of how we got to where we are, and where we want to go as citizens and, yes, as Catholics. One last thing before I begin, I want to be sure to thank President Minnis and the board for their invitation to speak.
When President Minnis first reached out a couple of months ago, I had originally said No. You see, last year I gave the commencement address at my alma mater, Georgia Tech, and I felt that one graduation speech was more than enough, especially for someone who isn't a professional speaker. But of course, President Minnis used his gift of persuasion. [Laughter] It spoke to the many challenges you all faced throughout the COVID fiasco ,and how you missed out on so many milestones the rest of us older people have taken for granted. While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique. Bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values in media, all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.
Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the Sign of the Cross during a pro- abortion rally. He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I'm sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.
He is not alone. From the man behind the COVID lockdowns to the people pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America, they all have a glaring thing in common. They are Catholic. This is an important reminder that being Catholic alone doesn't cut it.
These are the sorts of things we are told in polite society to not bring up. You know, the difficult and unpleasant things. But if we are going to be men and women for this time in history, we need to stop pretending that the "Church of Nice" is a winning proposition. We must always speak and act in charity, but never mistake charity for cowardice.
It is safe to say that over the past few years, I have gained quite the reputation for speaking my mind. I never envisioned myself, nor wanted, to have this sort of a platform, but God has given it to me, so I have no other choice but to embrace it and preach more hard truths about accepting your lane and staying in it.
As members of the Church founded by Jesus Christ, it is our duty and ultimately privilege to be authentically and unapologetically Catholic. Don't be mistaken, even within the Church, people in polite Catholic circles will try to persuade you to remain silent. There even was an award-winning film called Silence, made by a fellow Catholic, wherein one of the main characters, a Jesuit priest, abandoned the Church, and as an apostate when he died is seen grasping a crucifix, quiet and unknown to anyone but God. As a friend of Benedictine College, His Excellency Bishop Robert Barron, said in his review of the film, it was exactly what the cultural elite want to see in Christianity -- private, hidden away, and harmless.
Our Catholic faith has always been countercultural. Our Lord, along with countless followers, were all put to death for their adherence to her teachings. The world around us says that we should keep our beliefs to ourselves whenever they go against the tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We fear speaking truth, because now, unfortunately, truth is in the minority. Congress just passed a bill where stating something as basic as the biblical teaching of who killed Jesus could land you in jail.
But make no mistake, before we even attempt to fix any of the issues plaguing society, we must first get our own house in order, and it starts with our leaders. The bishops and priests appointed by God as our spiritual fathers must be rightly ordered. There is not enough time today for me to list all the stories of priests and bishops misleading their flocks, but none of us can blame ignorance anymore and just blindly proclaim that “That's what Father said.” Because sadly, many priests we are looking to for leadership are the same ones who prioritize their hobbies or even photos with their dogs and matching outfits for the parish directory.
It's easy for us laymen and women to think that in order for us to be holy, that we must be active in our parish and try to fix it. Yes, we absolutely should be involved in supporting our parishes, but we cannot be the source for our parish priests to lean on to help with their problems. Just as we look at the relationship between a father and his son, so too should we look at the relationship between a priest and his people. It would not be appropriate for me to always be looking to my son for help when it is my job as his father to lead him.
St. Josemaría Escrivá states that priests are ordained to serve, and should not yield to temptation to imitate laypeople, but to be priests through and through. Tragically, so many priests revolve much of their happiness from the adulation they receive from their parishioners, and in searching for this, they let their guard down and become overly familiar. This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time, because as my teammate's girlfriend says, familiarity breeds contempt. [Laughter]
Saint Josemaría continues that some want to see the priest as just another man. That is not so. They want to find in the priest those virtues proper to every Christian, and indeed every honorable man: understanding, justice, a life of work — priestly work, in this instance — and good manners. It is not prudent as the laity for us to consume ourselves in becoming amateur theologians so that we can decipher this or that theological teaching — unless, of course, you are a theology major. We must be intentional with our focus on our state in life and our own vocation. And for most of us, that's as married men and women. Still, we have so many great resources at our fingertips that it doesn't take long to find traditional and timeless teachings that haven't been ambiguously reworded for our times. Plus, there are still many good and holy priests, and it's up to us to seek them out.
The chaos of the world is unfortunately reflected in the chaos in our parishes, and sadly, in our cathedrals too. As we saw during the pandemic, too many bishops were not leaders at all. They were motivated by fear, fear of being sued, fear of being removed, fear of being disliked. They showed by their actions, intentional or unintentional, that the sacraments don't actually matter. Because of this, countless people died alone, without access to the sacraments, and it's a tragedy we must never forget. As Catholics, we can look to so many examples of heroic shepherds who gave their lives for their people, and ultimately, the Church. We cannot buy into the lie that the things we experienced during COVID were appropriate. Over the centuries, there have been great wars, great famines, and yes, even great diseases, all that came with a level of lethality and danger. But in each of those examples, Church leaders leaned into their vocations and ensured that their people received the sacraments.
Great saints like St. Damien of Molokai, who knew the dangers of his ministry, stayed for 11 years as a spiritual leader to the leper colonies of Hawaii. His heroism is looked at today as something set apart and unique, when ideally it should not be unique at all. For as a father loves his child, so a shepherd should love his spiritual children, too.
That goes even more so for our bishops, these men who are present-day apostles. Our bishops once had adoring crowds of people kissing their rings and taking in their every word, but now relegate themselves to a position of inconsequential existence. Now, when a bishop of a diocese or the bishop's conference as a whole puts out an important document on this matter or that, nobody even takes a moment to read it, let alone follow it.
No. Today, our shepherds are far more concerned with keeping the doors open to the chancery than they are with saying the difficult stuff out loud. It seems that the only time you hear from your bishops is when it's time for the annual appeal, whereas we need our bishops to be vocal about the teachings of the Church, setting aside their own personal comfort and embracing their cross. Our bishops are not politicians but shepherds, so instead of fitting in the world by going along to get along, they too need to stay in their lane and lead.
I say all of this not from a place of anger, as we get the leaders we deserve. But this does make me reflect on staying in my lane and focusing on my own vocation and how I can be a better father and husband and live in the world but not be of it. Focusing on my vocation while praying and fasting for these men will do more for the Church than me complaining about her leaders.
Because there seems to be so much confusion coming from our leaders, there needs to be concrete examples for people to look to in places like Benedictine, a little Kansas college built high on a bluff above the Missouri River, are showing the world how an ordered, Christ-centered existence is the recipe for success. You need to look no further than the examples all around this campus, where over the past 20 years, enrollment has doubled, construction and revitalization are a constant part of life, and people, the students, the faculty and staff, are thriving. This didn't happen by chance. In a deliberate movement to embrace traditional Catholic values, Benedictine has gone from just another liberal arts school with nothing to set it apart to a thriving beacon of light and a reminder to us all that when you embrace tradition, success — worldly and spiritual — will follow.
I am certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn't be met with anger, but instead met with excitement and pride. Not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify him. Reading that article now shared all over the world, we see that in the complete surrender of self and a turning towards Christ, you will find happiness. Right here in a little town in Kansas, we find many inspiring laypeople using their talents.
President Minnis, Dr. [Andrew] Swafford, and Dr. [Jared] Zimmerer are a few great examples right here on this very campus that will keep the light of Christ burning bright for generations to come. Being locked in with your vocation and staying in your lane is going to be the surest way for you to find true happiness and peace in this life.
It is essential that we focus on our own state in life, whether that be as a layperson, a priest, or religious. Ladies and gentlemen of the class of 2024, you are sitting at the edge of the rest of your lives. Each of you has the potential to leave a legacy that transcends yourselves and this era of human existence. In the small ways, by living out your vocation, you will ensure that God's Church continues and the world is enlightened by your example.
For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.
I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I'm on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I'm beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.
[Applause lasting 18 seconds]
She is a primary educator to our children. She is the one who ensures I never let football or my business become a distraction from that of a husband and father. She is the person that knows me best at my core, and it is through our marriage that, Lord willing, we will both attain salvation.
I say all of this to you because I have seen it firsthand how much happier someone can be when they disregard the outside noise and move closer and closer to God's will in their life. Isabelle's dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you asked her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud, without hesitation, and say, “Heck, No.”
As a man who gets a lot of praise and has been given a platform to speak to audiences like this one today, I pray that I always use my voice for God and not for myself. Everything I am saying to you is not from a place of wisdom, but rather a place of experience. I am hopeful that these words will be seen as those from a man, not much older than you, who feels it is imperative that this class, this generation, and this time in our society must stop pretending that the things we see around us are normal.
Heterodox ideas abound even within Catholic circles. But let's be honest, there is nothing good about playing God with having children — whether that be your ideal number or the perfect time to conceive. No matter how you spin it, there is nothing natural about Catholic birth control.
It is only in the past few years that I have grown encouraged to speak more boldly and directly because, as I mentioned earlier, I have leaned into my vocation as a husband and father, and as a man.
To the gentlemen here today: Part of what plagues our society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities. As men, we set the tone of the culture, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction, and chaos set in. This absence of men in the home is what plays a large role in the violence we see all around the nation. Other countries do not have nearly the same absentee father rates as we find here in the U.S., and a correlation could be made in their drastically lower violence rates, as well.
Be unapologetic in your masculinity, fighting against the cultural emasculation of men. Do hard things. Never settle for what is easy. You might have a talent that you don't necessarily enjoy, but if it glorifies God, maybe you should lean into that over something that you might think suits you better. I speak from experience as an introvert who now finds myself as an amateur public speaker and an entrepreneur, something I never thought I'd be when I received my industrial engineering degree.
The road ahead is bright. Things are changing. Society is shifting. And people, young and old, are embracing tradition. Not only has it been my vocation that has helped me and those closest to me, but not surprising to many of you, should be my outspoken embrace of the traditional Latin Mass. I've been very vocal in my love and devotion to the TLM and its necessity for our lives. But what I think gets misunderstood is that people who attend the TLM do so out of pride or preference. I can speak to my own experience, but for most people I have come across within these communities this simply is not true. I do not attend the TLM because I think I am better than others, or for the smells and bells, or even for the love of Latin. I attend the TLM because I believe, just as the God of the Old Testament was pretty particular in how he wanted to be worshipped, the same holds true for us today. It is through the TLM that I encountered order, and began to pursue it in my own life. Aside from the TLM itself, too many of our sacred traditions have been relegated to things of the past, when in my parish, things such as ember days, days when we fast and pray for vocations and for our priests, are still adhered to. The TLM is so essential that I would challenge each of you to pick a place to move where it is readily available.
A lot of people have complaints about the parish or the community, but we should not sacrifice the Mass for community. I prioritize the TLM even if the parish isn't beautiful, the priest isn't great, or the community isn't amazing. I still go to the TLM because I believe the holy sacrifice of the Mass is more important than anything else. I say this knowing full well that when each of you rekindle your knowledge and adherence to many of the church's greatest traditions, you will see how much more colorful and alive your life can and should be.
As you move on from this place and enter into the world, know that you will face many challenges. Sadly, I'm sure many of you know of the countless stories of good and active members of this community who, after graduation and moving away from the Benedictine bubble, have ended up moving in with their boyfriend or girlfriend prior to marriage. Some even leave the Church and abandon God. It is always heartbreaking to hear these stories, and there is a desire to know what happened and what went wrong.
What you must remember is that life is about doing the small things well, setting yourself up for success, and surrounding yourself with people who continually push you to be the best version of you. I say this all the time, that iron sharpens iron. It's a great reminder that those closest to us should be making us better. If you are dating someone who doesn't even share your faith, how do you expect that person to help you become a saint? If your friend group is filled with people who only think about what you're doing next weekend and are not willing to have those difficult conversations, how can they help sharpen you?
As you prepare to enter into the workforce, it is extremely important that you actually think about the places you are moving to. Who is the bishop? What kind of parishes are there? Do they offer the TLM and have priests who embrace their priestly vocation? Cost of living must not be the only arbiter of your choices, for a life without God is not a life at all, and the cost of salvation is worth more than any career.
I'm excited for the future, and I pray that something I have said will resonate as you move on to the next chapter of your life.
Never be afraid to profess the one holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church, for this is the Church that Jesus Christ established, through which we receive sanctifying grace.
I know that my message today had a little less fluff than is expected for these speeches, but I believe that this audience and this venue is the best place to speak openly and honestly about who we are and where we all want to go, which is Heaven.
I thank God for Benedictine College and for the example it provides the world. I thank God for men like President Minnis, who are doing their part for the Kingdom. Come to find out you can have an authentically Catholic college and a thriving football program. [Laughter and applause]
Make no mistake: You are entering into mission territory in a post-God world, but you were made for this. And with God by your side and a constant striving for virtue within your vocation, you too can be a saint.
Christ is King.
To the Heights.

2024.05.17 02:23 Rynian Warlocks are the backwards in 5e, and its easily fixable

I love dark fantasy and occult mystical magic. Back in 2020 i played a great game of Dungeon crawl classics with a friends, and that game has some really interesting magic where you can burn stat points to cast a spell, or if you mess up a cast it'll backfire, and you have to deal with mysterious entities and make deals to cast your magic... you know... like a warlock! Not really though.
I always avoid locks in dnd, they just never felt like the very strong lore and narrative, matched the gameplay. Why would you sell your soul for a cantrip? Faustian bargains are for untold knowledge, evil power, or to revive a dead loved one... but you don't see that in the gameplay. Unless you have a good DM, warlock patrons don't generally affect much because the actual mechanics don't rely on it, and their kit isn't super mystical... a couple useful bard spells and a really solid cantrip. Maybe you can use a weapon OR summon an imp? Not both though, that's just TOO much to ask an eldrich god for.
I'd rather have the variety of the benifits from the different pacts and just get rid of eldrich blast, or maybe have some darker powers. Something dangerous, maybe something that could backfire, or that costs your own blood to use. Strange spells. Maybe you could have to balance your int and charisma so you could either be better at casting or bargaining with your patron. Occult artifacts like the book of thay from BG3 would be great thematically... but that's not how they work. Warlocks should be despised, marked by their magick, have some sort of drawback that effects their health, or place in society.
You know what Warlock's kits are good for? Sorcerers. Of course sorcerer,s who interact with magic directly and without training, would conjure energy blasts and be worse at casting spells. But you could use meta magick on those spells since they come from your heart, now that makes thematic sense. It'd also make sense for sorcerers to work on short rest since they aren't preparing spells like wizzards.
What do y'all think?
