2024.05.17 13:05 Potential-Quit-5610 41F Desperately need new people to chat with.

I recently over the last year have become unemployed while awaiting a disability judgment and have so much free time that I don't know what to do with myself these days and it's making me stir crazy. I could really use some new chat buddies to talk with and pass time with. I am a good conversationalist and I try not to "vent" too much unless I ask permission to unload first. I have had a lot of experience in other cultures overseas so I have some great stories. I have a 14 year old son that I'm navigating his coming of age issues with and could use a sound board to toss ideas back and forth too. I have interest in sci fi and fantasy books and movies as well as I have played a lot of RPG's over the years if you are a gamer. I enjoy music, books, the ocean, art, and I try not to debate too much politically but I am good at keeping it civil when discussing different points of view when it comes to politics even if I don't agree with your stance, I was told on a train once that I had the most balanced viewpoints that are pretty cut down the center on the current policies and candidates. I find things like Mandela Effects and Quantum Realities/Parallel Timelines to be very intriguing as well and while I don't subscribe to dogmatic religious belief systems I do enjoy discussing spirituality/metaphysical theories.
If you'd like to chat I will respond to you as soon as I see the message. It's 5:04am right now and I'm on some new medication that seems to have insomnia as a side effect so bonus if you're bored right now and want a conversation!

Sali Herman 1952
Found this, print or original? I haven't been able to find an image of this painting online. The brush stroke texture is raised, not 2D print. Either oil on board or print on board. Herman has some oil on board originals. Any ideas?

2024.05.17 12:49 Cecil_the_Rengar Living in Gent for 2 months next year - housing options?

Hello! Firstly I'd like to apologize, as I'm sure you get this question all the time, but I have no idea where to start.
I am a doctor from Portugal that will be doing a short internship/fellow at Gent in March and April 2025. From what I've looked into, I should start looking for housing ASAP - where would you recommend, both in terms of online platforms and in terms of actual location in the city? Is this type of short term renting even viable? For the record, I have no problem with renting a single room in a shared flat or dorm, although I would not want a shared room.
Again, thank you guys so much and I'm sorry for the spam. Best wishes ❤️

2024.05.17 12:43 Grand_Reanimation Chapter 1: Future for the Present

Chapter 1: Future for the Present
"Access... Gilded Feathers"...
In the dry deserts of the western border of India resides the Spiral City of Nixtom. In this district, one could find the most prestigious school in the entire country: High School Kolar.
After being closed for over a year, HS Kolar finally opened its gates once again as the war had finally ended. With the start of a new Academic year, the winds brought a fresh batch of new students. One of them being… Abhi.
"Big Ahh School." Said Abhi while he observed the vast establishment of Kolar. The enormous and illuminating marble-crafted work of art school building might even be mistaken for the Taj Mahal, well at least without its spherical dome on the top. The outdoor campus was as vibrant and green as grass could be; covering the main building from all four sides, with the beautiful shrubbery wonders of topiaries; acting as dividers between the grass panels and the main marble tile pathway leading towards the building's entrance. It would be an understatement to call this scenery beautiful.
While walking towards the school, Abhi stopped and noticed a dog near a telephone pole on the street walk outside the school gate, he went there to pet it. While playing with the dog, Abhi noticed some mushrooms nearby and picked them up. After some time, Abhi looked around and held his gaze at some peculiar-looking people in black suits and black goggles for an extended time. Abhi then got up and walked inside the campus, these people in black suits were even seen inside the school. Abhi ignored them and walked through the main entrance.
Ding! Tring! Tring! The first day of Abhi's High School life began as the school bell rang in the light of a new millennium.
Abhi jogged towards the school building after he heard the bell. Upon getting inside he looked around, displaying wonder in his eyes. He stood in the middle of a giant hall, but the enormous hall wasn't the only wonderful thing, there was also the interior of the school building which was noticeably different from the exterior. The interior resembled modern architecture. Unlike the exterior, the inside walls were made of cement with white overpaint, whereas the outside was built from marble, and the railings, poles, and benches all around the place were made from exquisite-looking wood. The hall even had a beautiful chandelier hanging from the ceiling and two curved staircases leading up to the second floor which was for the school's officials such as the principal. Even though the interior looked different from the exterior, it was still elegant and harmonized well with the school's marble exterior. One of the walls was covered with pictures of the school's special events, and achievements, and even celebrities from all over the world visiting and even studying in the school were visible. A particular wall though, just had a lot of writing on it, not only that but it was written on a brass plate.
"Man, I gotta hurry up," Said Abhi in a rush. Many hallways were branching out from the main. Abhi seemed perplexed, perhaps he wasn't confident enough in his navigation skills to find his classroom. Yet suddenly, Abhi closed his eyes and softly mumbled something. After he opened his eyes, his expression had completely changed, he looked and acted far more confidently, he soon chose a way and started walking towards it.
The hallways were long and the staircases were wide. After a few minutes of walking up to the third floor, Abhi finally reached his classroom '1C'. He went inside, the classroom was large, but not enormous compared to the rest of Kolar's Gigantic architecture. The classroom had not one, not two but three class boards. Two of them were at the front, one being a whiteboard, the second being a blackboard and the third was another whiteboard placed at the back of the classroom.
Every student including Abhi entered the classroom and occupied the two-person benches at random. While walking in, he looked up and noticed a black cuboid-shaped box attached to the ceiling. He seemed curious about this object but chose to ignore it and took a seat in the front of the last column alongside a guy with peculiar-looking orange hair. The benches were made of wood, yet seemed quite comfy, and as with everything else in this school, the benches were large too, Abhi looked towards his left and found a window beside him.
He looked around some more and then looked at himself as if he was comparing himself to his fellow students. When compared to the attire Abhi was wearing, the students of HS Kolar were of unique appearance. Once everyone was seated there was a moment of awkward silence in the room. In that instance, the guy who sat next to Abhi suddenly stood up and asserted:
"Good morning everyone, my name is Veer. I'm delighted to be here amongst you all. From what I can tell we all are students from different places far and wide all across our nation. With the presence of such diversity, I'm sure we all want to get to know each other. So, I was thinking why don't we introduce ourselves to the class as a starting ceremony for our first day at school".
Students gave Veer a peculiar look and in a few seconds another student from the back replied to Veer: "That's a good idea Veer but how about we wait till our Class Teacher comes in, so she can get to know us as well." Said a pretty girl with thin eyes and brownish-dark hair. "Good point Dep, let's wait for the teacher." Replied Veer. The rest of the students in the class nodded with approval.
Creak! Bam! The classroom door smacked open. A Beautiful, fair, curvy, and well-dressed lady in a saree with long black hair; a pair of specs, and a giant smile on her face walked into the class and stood in front of the class cabinet.
"Good Mornin' homies, welcome to class 'C' of 11th grade, I'm going to be your homeroom teacher for this year. You may call me Ms Oxlong''.
The class greets back the teacher in unison. "Did she just call us homies?" Some of the students whispered among themselves.
"From what I heard while walking in, you guys wanted to have an introduction session in my presence, right? I'd love that, but before we do it, I have to inform you guys about some important information first. To start, I'd like to give an insight into the schedule and schematics of our academic lives. And also, I have to present a special message to you guys".
The Class nods following teacher Oxlong's words.
"Hmm, I Wonder what the special message would be," said Abhi in a subtle tone. "Probably some boring informational video or the principal saying hello." Said Veer while looking at Abhi. "Ha ha, probably." Replied Abhi.
"Get your notes ready and write down all the information necessary." Said Oxlong.
The students followed the teacher's words and wrote down all the necessary information….
a few minutes of info dump later the teacher got close to her final announcement:
"Finally, by this week's end, y'all have to give a Merit Test. This test won't be counted in your overall grade, but do not make the mistake of taking this lightly, as this test will determine your fate as a student of Kolar".
The entire class stopped writing down the instructions. They looked up at the teacher and displayed an uncanny look on their faces with flared eyebrows, and wide-open mouths, all of them said at once: "What! A test in the first week?"
"Now…now y'all don't need to worry; there isn't anything to worry about. This Merit Test is just to evaluate all of your individual and overall class limits which would provide data for our team to maximize the growth of all you pokie-bears." The teacher noticing this reaction reassured the students:
Students, relieved to hear this, relaxed their eyebrows and faces to nod towards the teacher with approval. Wait but what in the hell is a pokie-bear? Some of the students thought, as they weren't familiar with the modern lingo.
"Now as for the last announcement; we have a special informational video for y'all."
"See! Told ya, it was gonna be just another boring informational video nothing new." Said Veer with a smug grind while looking at Abhi. "You called it for real." Said Abhi while softly chuckling.
Tap! The teacher flicks on a switch placed next to the blackboard.
The black cuboid box above started to zrrr Vibrate and illuminate green lights. Abhi was paying utmost attention to this, with his face looking like he just witnessed a dark angel descend down from heaven.
Some of the students looked at this happening with intrigue: "Wow, I have seen projectors being used in special halls before but Kolar has them in every class?"
Some were looking up with blank faces: "I didn't notice that projector before."
The teacher held a remote in her hand and clicked a button. Immediately the cuboid box projected and displayed a computer interface. She then went to her desk and opened up a silvery device with "Soni" imprinted on its back; this device seemed to be connected to the black cuboid above.
"Damn! They even got laptops in every class huh?" Said Veer referencing the device. "Isn't that like a… computer?" Said Abhi. "Well, a laptop is pretty much just a portable computer so you are half correct" Replied Veer.
Abhi looked amazed after hearing this, he exuded curiosity, his eyes glistening with intrigue. He almost seemed like he had never even heard about such technology. Seeing this, Veer lets out a friendly smile towards Abhi's excited expression.
The teacher then pulled down a white curtain from a large white cylinder placed on top of the main blackboard. This was used as a screen for the projector.
"Alright before we start, I'd just like to inform y'all that this special informational video comes straight from the core of the education department in the Capital, and is a mandatory watch for everyone. This will only be played once among all classes simultaneously, so pay attention".
CLICK! A video started playing on the white screen.
A man maybe in his thirties pops up on the screen. He has long white hair, deep brown eyes, and a darker brown skin complexion. He greets the camera by saying "Namaste" while joining his hands.
As soon as he appears on the screen every student, including Abhi, goes wide-eyed, being in disbelief, their jaw drops to the floor and their eyebrows hit the ceiling.
The person in the video starts to speak:
"Good morning students of Kolar. My name is Vishva Pratap Raghavan but you may know me as the… 'President of India' ".

2024.05.17 12:40 vulpea I ordered two products and only received one

I have literally been going around in circles with support. I ordered a TitanEvo Reyna edition and a plush footrest for my wife back in March. I have patiently waited for the chair to become available and it has finally arrived on the 7th of May. Without the footrest. Talked to support and it seems the footrest was sent out the next day, on the 8th. Only that it only got as far as DPD Poland. The second tracking number doesn't give extra details and every time I talk to support, they shrug and say "it has been delivered".
For reference, I am in Romania. Reached out to DPD locally and they said that yes, there is a delivery according to that tracking, but it never reached the country. So it's still in Poland and somehow support has no idea where.
Can anyone from Secretlab help me sort this mess out? I really don't want to take it further with EU authorities, all I want is to receive my product.

2024.05.17 12:39 wonderbeann HELP: Ideas/advice on roof insulation needed

We have a split level home in the mid-north coast of NSW with tiles, a cathedral ceiling and exposed rafters that is steaming hot in summer.
Having made the decision to lose the rafters, I am tearing my hair out trying to work out the best approach to insulating the ceiling. The rafters are only 140mm deep and the plasterer has indicated they can drop the battens down a further 50mm, leaving us 190mm for batts.
The narrowest R4 batt is 195mm.
Firstly, presuming we use an R4 batt, will the lack of an air pocket between the current ceiling (old plasterboard) and the new ceiling be a problem? Further, will the fact the batt protrudes 55mm out from the rafter be an issue and should that cavity be filled also?
Secondly, am I correct in my understanding that when a batt is compressed its R value lowers, but the R value per cm is higher (ie R6 compressed by 20mm becomes R5.8)? So, might we be better off going with an R5 batt at 210mm with an extra 15mm of compression?
And finally, might we be better off ditching the batts and using something like foil board?
Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

2024.05.17 12:20 jen13579 Childs party what to do about food

My daughter is soon to be 4. Previously for her birthday party's we've invited a few family and 2 or 3 friends with children that we know.
In the last year she's started preschool and goes to two different preschools. I've also started meeting more of the other mums in our area. This means we have a lot more people to invite for her party. There will be at least 20 children (plus 5 older siblings and 6 toddlers) all who will also have one or two parents. Then we have 12 adults and 2 children from family.
In previous years we did food for everyone, including the adults (pizza, sandwiches, sausage rolls etc...). But this year we have a lot more people, it will be too expensive and we can't afford to.
We were thinking of having the party between 11am and 1 and feeding only the children. Some family will probably stay after so I thought we could feed them at around 2pm.
We have a very big garden and it will be summer so I'm not too worried about having so many children. I'm just a bit concerned about feeding them all!
Anyone have any tips, or ideas we might not have thought of?

2024.05.17 12:16 NoniTheUnicorn 23F - What is happening to the vision in my left eye? tingling? numbness?

General background information: 23F, no pre-existing health conditions that I know of in myself or family, healthy BMI, sedentary lifestyle, 9-5 office job, quit smoking and drinking 1 year ago. The only medication I take is for ADHD.
I used to wear glasses (-4.00 with -1.25 astigmatism) and had Lasik in December 2023, which was successful. A few months later, in March-April my eyes were checked by the optometrist and vision was perfect in my right eye and almost just as good in my left. Starting May (~ May 1st), my left eye became increasingly blurry, and this week (may 13th) I noticed I could not see enough to read with it. initially though it was vision fluctuation from lasik recovery or some dryness, but then this was combined with the following events: (emphasize that the right side of my face and my right eye have been- and continue to be- fine, as well as both sides of my body).
  1. May 13: sharp pain on the left side of my nose bridge, connecting to the tail of my left eyebrow., but felt only when squinting or scrunching my nose. If I kept a straight face, I did not feel pain.
  2. May 14: woke up with no more pain on the side of my nose, but my upper left eyelid was slightly swollen and slightly red (no discharge or pain). I took a picture and sent it to my GP, who prescribed me Chloramphenicol eye ointment (1x per day before bed). I could not get it delivered in the same day, so I just washed my face with the same soap and water as always and went to bed.
  3. May 15: My eye was still swollen but not as much. the Chloramphenicol was delivered and I applied it once in the evening as indicated by my GP.
  4. May 16: Left eye is still just as blurry but not swollen or red. While I was at work, ~11:00am I had a sudden feeling of tingling and numbness on the left side of my face surrounding my eye (cheek and forehead). The vision in my eye was not worse than it had already been, but this sudden tingle and numbness scared me (I can compare it to the numbing cream they apply when you get a tattoo, because I still had some feeling). I was also able to move my face muscles just fine and had no drooping. I urgently went to my GP, which sent me to the optometrist, who saw ?something? in a deep layer of my cornea (he indicated towards a possible viral infection?) that alarmed him enough to say I needed to go to the hospital ASAP to get checked there. At the hospital, 3 doctors and 2 interns later, I was told that they do not know what it is, and that it does not look like an infection, but it could be a sort of herpes. They also say they have no idea about the numbness in my face and cannot explain that, and they care about the eye. They didn't want to check with neurology either. I was now given an eye ointment 5x per day and told to come back in 1 week (ACICLOVIR EU-P 30mg/g).
  5. (today) May 17: The movement in my face is still not affected, and the numbness subsided (maybe still 5% still numb, around my forehead). I got to apply the eye ointment 2 times yesterday until I got to bed and 2 more times today (still early morning here in Europe, got 3 more times to go). After each time I apply the eye ointment, I notice that my vision is getting more blurry and 'frosty' and not returning. Not sure if It is normal because of how thick the ointment is, or if I should raise alarm bells to go to the hospital today.
When I felt the tingling and numbness in my face (may 16) I panicked because I was afraid of it being a sign of a stroke. My GP laughed and told me that I am not 80 years old so I must be exaggerating. I asked if there was any way I could check whether I had one, but he said there were no tests I could do. My vision is getting worse after this ointment and no one could explain to me the numbness. Although that numbness mostly went away, what is happening to me? what can I do?

2024.05.17 12:11 Baticula Advice for cruising?

I was practicing yesterday and I was using the smooth road I found because there's not really any free car parks near me and like cars kept on pulling out so I could barely skate and it got annoying cause I was barely on my board so I was like "fuck this, I'll go practice on the beach path" which is like the only other massive bit of smooth path relatively near and yeah it sucked it was super windy and I was getting sand blown in my eyes. I guess I'm just annoyed that I only have like two completely flat areas I can practice on because like I wanna use it to get around but I'm in the uk and pavement ain't the best. Its in a bunch of squares with super small gaps in between them and sometimes they're unlevel or cracked and I've tried riding on it and it feels super fucking weird. I know it's doable because I've seen someone else skating on it just fine. I've already got some solutions for myself: 1 is to continue getting comfortable on the board on the two smooth areas I have whilst also trying to skate on the bumpier grounds, 2 basically just skate around on the bumpy grounds with pads on which might help ease my fear (I'm pretty sure they're children's pads and they feel really tight so might not be comfortable) or 3 maybe buy cruiser wheels and use those (not a very big fan of this idea because it's kinda me giving up plus I already have 78a 54mm wheels. Feels more like a lack of skill than a hardware issue)
I'm probably going to keep at option 1 however I'd appreciate any advice especially from uk skaters who know what I'm on about and how you guys mightve gotten better at skating this ground.

2024.05.17 12:07 rdappls Family is going on holiday without me

Hello, I am venting a little bit, i am myslef aware this is a very small issue (or non issue). My parents just let me know they are going on a trip to Spain and i am but hurt they didn't invite me with them. As I am writing this i realise this is stupid so i guess writing it down works great to feel better.
My parents travel a lot, minimum 4 times a year outside the country (we are in E.Europe) and they always complain that I don't join them. This is true because most times they travel last minute and often they'll ask after they already bought the trips for themselves or one day before they board the plane and I doubt there even are any more spots available:)). Last week my dad asked me if i wanted to come with them to Egypt to an all inclusive resort and i said i couldn't, i have some issues with my body,i lost 60 kg and being in a bathing suit around all their friends makes me and my loose skin feel bad. They know about this which is why i always bring up traveling to non beach related places. If it were just me and my parents i don;t mind the beach but their friend group is pretty big and i don;t know them.
Now comes Spain. I have never been to Spain before and it's on my wishlist for a very long time. I was shocked when they told me they were going there in 2 days(so in May not June). When I was a kid they skipped my highschool graduation and my prom to go to Spain and I am stil upset they chose the trip over me (it's been 10 years but it still hurts and i even talked about it to them a few years back). What made me sad is that I had invited them to a picnic at the botanical garden (it's rose season) and they said yes and now they are going to spain. they didn't even mention the picnic, i was on the phone with my mom asking her if she wanted to join me at a different event and she said she's going to spain. so if i hadn't called they may have just let me prep the food and everything and then not show up? i am confused by their logic,I even sent out an invite by post (i got into caligraphy and was seals,it's a thing) so it s not like she had forgotten. I live about 1.3 hours away so i always try to figure out activities in my city that they can enjoy, the picnic was their idea.
I think if it were any other country i probably wouldn't mind but I felt horrible not having anyone at my hs graduation and prom because my mom and dad were in Barcelona having fun,if they had said we're off to Turkey to lounge on the beach it would have been fine. I think i m just but hurt it's Spain:))
Obviously my parents can go on holiday without me,i am an adult not a child, they have no obligation to take me with them anywhere or to invite me to trips etc. I do wish they would stop complaining that I never go anywhere with them since these trips always involve their friends and are almost always last minute or my favorite is when they've already booked it and they are asking without even checking availabilities. But they plan these trips with their friends, with me it's like: hey, do you want to go to x location? we are leaving in 2 days and there might not be another spot available unless you make up your mind in the next 5 minutes. Now that i write this i realize my parents never ever asked me where i would want to go or planned anything with me,it's almost like they want me to say no. They have a different life, they run their own businesses so they can take time off last minute more easily. I work from home and i could take time off but it affects the money i make since i am a freelancer, plus some projects have deadlines etc.
To psychoanalize this some more:)) i am an only child to parents who were always absent when i was growing up,i am the kid who never asked for homework help, who managed her schedule (school, food, cleaning, learning wtc) since 1st grade and never could ask them for help because they were never there. I do wander if anyone knows how to move on from this? But i guess i am but hurt when they ignore me or cancel plans on me because of the way i grew up and not because going to Spain by themselves is an isssue. This post is all over the place, i would apreciate some thoughts on how to be less but hurt in the future:) thank you for reading, i hope you guys have a great summer!

{Is the reason that everything happened to Tarlim in the first place?}

{Only up to the ramps, mostly. Trying to impress upon people the importance of accessibility for those with extenuating circumstances. At least according to the records I have access to.}

{The average person knows as much about his friends as they do about Mike Collins.}
<...Who?>
{Exactly. 20th century human spaceman, was there for their first lunar landing. Didn’t get to put boots on the ground, and nobody remembers his name now.}

{Hell, I didn’t even know about him until I put in a search query of niche historical figures just to give you an example. Yeesh…}

Archived Closed Circuit Security Video - Establishment: Exterminator’s Office - Dawn Creek Division - Subbasement - Date Recorded (ST): OCT 31, 2136 - Timeframe (ST): 11:42 - 11:45
The parking bay is silent. Vans are parked neatly in their spots which frame the hallway to the armory and fuel storage for the camera. A ding is heard and something moves in the hallway. Five fully suited Venlil and a Zurulian step out of an elevator and run towards a van. The sound of a door slamming open comes from the hall roughly 6 seconds later. A stream of Exterminators pour out into the hall from the stairwell.
Their voices are indecipherable as they speak over each other. A Sulian runs into the armory and reappears with a huge flamer tank on their back. Another Zurulian can be seen with an extinguisher tank, but a Venlil bleats at them and tosses it aside. They drag the quadrupedal alien quickly into the parking garage before physically throwing them into the back of a van.
From the back of the hallway, a fluid can be seen spreading across the ground. A trio of Venlil back out of a room while holding their flamers up. They are unlit, instead spewing fuel out of their nozzles. The trio twirl around in an overly animated manner as they walk down the hall to the parking garage. A van pulls out of its spot with windows down so the passengers could let out a cheer.
A black-suited Venlil runs up to the spraying trio while waving their arms to get them out into the garage. The microphone just barely manages to catch him saying, “We need to save some for the predators!” One of the other Venlil replies, “Yes sir, Mafchi!” A short flurry of curses is heard as the gathered exterminators pile into the three other visible vans. Two of the vans speed out of the garage, forcing some other Venlil exterminators to dive out of the way in the process.
The black-suited Mafchi picks up a fuel canister that had been dropped and twists off its cap. He slings it under his shoulder and pours a line of fuel. He marches straight to the final van and hops up into the open rear. The van backs itself up to turn out of the garage. The fuel canister clatters to the ground as it pulls away. Before it clears the view of the camera, the Black-suited Venlil is seen standing in its open back. He is holding what appears to be a flare gun.
The flare sails through the air shortly after the van leaves the frame and impacts the ground. It bounces and rolls until it touches the fuel and ignites it in an instant. A small wall of fire proceeds down the provided trail into the hallway, igniting more fuel as time passes. The hallway is quickly engulfed in vividly red fire. Thick black smoke begins to pour out into the garage as the fire inches closer to the primary fuel tank.
Movement can be seen in the hallway between the flickering flames. The silver form of a Venlil Exterminator is seen rushing out of the stairwell and fighting to head towards the fuel storage room. Before they reach, a white flash fills the screen. The feed goes dead, the error code consistent with electrical interruption.
(Specified Media Concluded.)

{Who was what? Mafchi?}

{Hmmm, there aren’t any tags embedded for them. The suits do a rather good job at making the officers anonymous. Let me see…oh.}

{The, uh… the employment records for that Office were…terminated.}

{It looks like…yes, here. Record wipe in 2497. Media with less than 1 bistandannual visit were removed to save space on the university’s central server. It’s…they’re gone, gone gone.}

{Maybe, but that’ll do us no good if we don’t know their name. And because of the chaos of that incident, nobody has been able to accurately reconstruct where every individual was in that office. We’d have to already know who they were to find them.}
<...I guess that’s another person I’ll have to remember then, huh?>
{...Guess so. Speaking of remembering, perhaps you should check out Tarlim’s view again? Seeing how we were just talking about him.}
<...Sure. At least people remember his name, right?>

Memory Transcription Subject: Tarlim, the Venbig. Date [Standardized Human Time] October 31st, 2136
No matter how much Sven and Anso griped about it, having them leave and return with the trailer was a great idea. The humans who had gone with them the first time were, to my dismay, excited to try and ride in the back. I had at least been able to impress on those four that I couldn’t let anyone else ride like that, and that they were to help with rigging a trailer with some seats.
I had to admit; they did a good job!
Several couches sat bolted to the floor of the covered trailer and even had some ropes that could be hooked across the armrests as impromptu belts. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it would work as well as any bus or short train ride! Certainly superior to jumping in the bed of a truck.
I strode out into the parking road and swayed my ears to greet Anso. Sven had stayed behind here to meet with the humans and entertain the kids, a job which he was slightly less unenthusiastic about compared to last time. “Greetings, Anso! Have you made the necessary preparations for the humans to leave with you?”
The Yotul hopped out of the truck bed and bounced to me. “We have! I have to say those humans were great workers to have helped get this whipped up so quickly! I hope Sven has been behaving himself?”
I let my tail wag behind me remembering my last glimpse of him. He should really secure his sheath straps! “He has! Been entertaining the refugees while I made sure they all had their belongings ready to go. Come on inside, let’s go gather them.”
I guided him with a wave of my arm as we turned back to the door. To be truthful, I hadn’t expected Sven to win the humans over as quickly as he did. Needless to say, his primitive attire seemed to spark joy within them, a joy sorely needed amidst the sadness of recency.
As we entered the building I noticed something, or rather, the lack of something. When I had exited only a few [minutes] prior, the building had been full of life and noise. Now, it was almost dead quiet, save for the sounds of a holovision coming from the lobby. Rather heated sounds, at that.
“I didn’t think it was already main rest claw,” Anso mused as he, too, recognized the aggravated voices coming from the lobby. “And what are they watching in there? Sounds…angry.”
“Yeah…” I trailed off as I followed the noises. As I approached the lobby, the sound of what I assumed was a Gojid yelling. “You know nothing about my family. TALK, JUST FUCKING TALK, NOW!” My ears pinned back at the foul language at play, hoping that Sven and the children were somewhere else.
As I entered the room, I saw that I was only half right. The children were thankfully nowhere to be found, but Sven was obviously present, as was most of the facility staff. I was about to ask what was going on before another voice drew my attention to the holovision, the same as everyone else. The voice of none other than Chief Nikonus.
“There were three of us who laid out the groundwork for the Federation. When Kolshian explorers came in contact with the Farsul, more than a thousand years ago, the galaxy was young. We were the first in this sector to escape our gravity well. You know about the founding of this institution, but I reiterate it just in case.”
“The Krakotl were the third,” another voice piped up from behind the camera. I thought it might’ve been another Gojid, but the voice was far too breathy. Harchen, maybe? I wasn’t given a chance to consider it further as Nikonus continued. “Yes, they were a problem from the start; aggressive, disagreeable. We tried to identify the problem, and why they were so ill-equipped for spacefaring.”
“We learned they were scavengers, who would occasionally go for fish as well.”
His next line was rendered inaudible by the shocked gasps of both the refugees and residents in the room. I was no different, drawing in a sharp breath at the abrupt admission. I remembered that Arvi had said some aliens were revealed to have eaten meat in the past, but was this the way it was decided to be revealed? With such abject callousness?
Nikonus continued to speak, looking not just proud, but smug with his words. He went on about how the Federation had saved these aliens with their manipulations, but the entirety of his body language seemed to indicate he reveled in how devastating this information would be to the people he was speaking to. How they manipulated an entire culture, a RELIGION!
What if they did the same to ours?
That horrifying thought struck through my mind like a derailing train. I had relied upon the Tenets in some of my darkest moments. Found comfort in them when there was none elsewhere to be found. To have such a comfort revealed as a lie in its entirety, used only for some other group to control you…
The voice of Nikonus hit my ears again. “Oh Sovlin, I already told you. For the small minority of species who don’t find herbivory alone, we teach them the right way. Doesn’t the religion against predators sound familiar?”
The Kolshian was insufferably proud of those words. There was no doubt in my mind now; this was mocking. Mocking a Gojid for following The Protector. For being a predator. For being different, but expecting to still be treated as a person. The Gojid were predators, they couldn’t help it, and they were already being mocked for it.
What might happen to all the other species?
I shifted my focus away from the screen to the crowd, searching for one in particular. Vichee, a Krakotl already so different from everyone else, and now my concerns for them were multiplied with every word that fell from Nikonus’ mouth. Were they okay? They had come in here to see Sven, I had seen them. Where are-
I spotted Kaeden in the corner of the room. Next to him, slumped against the wall, was Vichee. The dual colored Krakotl’s eyes were glazed over as they stared at nothing. I strode over quickly, my instincts wanting to comfort them. Kaeden was simply standing there, it was confusing that he didn’t seem to be comforting Vichee at all. As I got closer, their head tilted up to me, regarding me with an unfocused eye.
“He was right.” They said quietly. My implant almost didn’t pick it up over the sounds of the lobby. “Kaeden had asked me soon after our first meeting if Krakotl had once been meat eaters. Said it was the shape of our beaks. ‘More suited to capturing small wriggling prey than filtering algae’. He told me. I nearly flew away right then… If I had, I would have been alone with this news.”I listened, kneeling down to be closer to their level. “You’re not alone, your herd is here. Right Kaeden?”
He looked over at me and nodded. “Vichee was there with me when Earth was attacked. I’m here for them now. Kaabra and Venik are… together, elsewhere at the moment. But they will be here too.”
I flicked my ears in understanding. “Then I hope they may help in hugging Vichee until their tears are dry.” I turned an eye to Vichee. “Please, I just want you to know that you are still you. What your body does has no effect on your personhood.”
Vichee still sat, their mind still likely whirling with the new information. They lifted their differently colored wings. “I’m well aware. This lesson I already learned. But thank you, I understand what you mean.” Kaeden nodded slowly and Vichee returned to their thoughts.
“There’s going to be trouble soon, Tarlim,” Kaeden stated gravely. “News like this? Nothing good will come of it. I can already tell this won’t go over well. Keep your eyes open.”
As if in response to his words, the sound of clanking metal hits my ears. They shoot up, pivoting to locate its source. There, dashing towards the door, was the armored figure of Sven. I didn’t know him enough to know how this broadcast would affect him, but running was never the best sign. I flicked my ears goodbye to my friends and rose, following after the metal man. In my periphery, I saw the television screen had shifted to show Rolem moving onto the stage. I would have to miss whatever it was he had to say, so ducked through the doors and continued to follow the sound of metal.
As I exited, I saw that I wasn’t the only one to see Sven’s actions. Anso was bounding behind him, shouting something I couldn’t hear. Sven didn’t seem to either as he kept running, but his gait wasn’t one of fear. He looked purposeful, sprinting in a straight line. A line pointed right towards-
Towards the observing Exterminator Van.
The metal Venlil didn’t even hesitate at the presence of the fence. He leapt up in a display of strength and agility, vaulting over the barrier and continuing his beeline into the van. It was like phased through the doors with how fast he moved. There were sounds of commotion that followed his entry, and soon two Exterminators fell out of the van. One Venlil…and one Krakotl. I wonder how Kalek is taking things.
I, too, cleared the fence with only a high step and reached the van, peering in to see Sven at the controls. “Sven! What are you doing?” I asked, the Krakotl officer shivering on the ground in my periphery.
“They got my girl!” He huffed, “She’s a Gojid, they got her, I can’t let them do anything worse to her!” He tried to activate the vehicle to no avail, but his words brought up something that I hadn’t thought much over. I remember hearing about temporary emplacements that were being set up. Paly had texted me about exterminators bringing people there. Her too. And that would mean-
-THOOOOOOOMMMMM-
The wind hit me like a truck and rocked the van I was standing next to. Sven even stopped trying to fiddle with the controls to see what had just happened. In the distance, near the center of town, an enormous black cloud rose into the air, the vestiges of fire still burning in the suspended embers. I couldn’t look away from it as my mind raced with horrible possibilities as my mind tripped over itself trying to concoct a plan of action.
I wasn’t given long to think before the radio in the van crackled to life, startling both Sven and myself. “Attention all True Exterminators! The truth has come out about the taint in our midst! For too long we have lived with its danger in our presence! If any of you still hold the safety of The Herd in your hearts, come join us so we may burn ALL the predator taint from this District! Rendezvous at Vulen’s apartment complex, we shall start our cleansing there!”
The name of one of my landlords sparked familiarity in my mind. They had been working to build a series of new apartments to add to his old, and if I remembered, had agreed to house the Gojid refugees. The Gojid! Paly was housed with them!!
In an instant, I reached into the van and grabbed Sven by the arm. He tried to pull away, but my grip was too strong. “Sven! They’re gonna kill the Gojid! They’re gonna burn Paly!”
He finally managed to shake himself free as my paws became jittery from stress. “I gotta save my girlfriend! She’s in a facility! I gotta save her!”
“But they’re gonna burn people here!” I protested, “we have to do something! We need- We need People who can fight them! Kaeden! I need to get Kaeden! We can save them!”
I pulled myself away from the van and spotted Anso nearby. He must have had to go through the gate, but this was good timing. I pointed a claw at him. “Do Not Let Him drive off before I get back!”
I didn’t give him, nor the Exterminators who had recovered from their shock, time to ask questions. Paly was in danger, as were who knew how many others. I faintly heard my data pad chime from within my shoulder bag, the signal my heart was beating too fast, but I couldn’t deal with it right now. I could get the heart rate under control during the drive. Right now I needed Kaeden, he knew how to fight! How to save people when others were trying to kill them!
My paws guided me and I was back in the cafeteria before I knew it. Some of the crowd had dissipated, but Kaeden and Vichee were still in the same corner I had left them in, but with their Venlil friends now joined. Without leaving time for protest, I grabbed Kaeden’s arm and pulled him away. I heard Vichee squawk behind me, but I was in too much of a hurry. I can’t let her get hurt. I Won’t.
Kaeden started to slap my arm as I dragged the soldier across the lobby. “Tarlim! What the fuck are you doing?? What’s going on?”
“No time, they’re going to burn everyone,” I breathlessly said as I burst the facility doors open to get him to the van.
“What? Who?” Kaeden questioned, still resisting my pull. I could hear a tinge of worry in his voice, and I knew he would understand. Anso looked back from his position as he heard my approach, and upon seeing me dragging Kaeden along, he grew visibly concerned.
“On the radio, something about True Exterminators,” I attempted to explain to him as we neared the gate doors. This time, I simply spread them apart with my free paw, metal screeching against itself as the gate was forced open. “They’re going to burn every cured species they can find, and That Means Paly. I Won’t Let Them.”
Kaeden had stopped struggling as I explained the bare essentials to him, and once we approached the van, he finally had enough sense to ask the right questions. “So what exactly is the plan to stop them? We’re strong, sure, I could probably take most of them. But just two of us against a wall of those flamers?”
“Not two,” I corrected, letting go of his arm and throwing open the back doors of the van. Still seated in the drivers side was Sven, who looked back once he heard me permit entrance into the back. “We have him too.”
“Wh- the LARPer??” Kaeden asked incredulously. I wasn’t familiar with the term he used, but his tone told us all we needed to know. Sven’s eyes narrowed at the perceived insult, but Kaeden continued. “Do either of you have any formal military training?? Rushing down there is only going to get you both killed along with the others! For fucks sake, slow down! We need a plan!”
“T-There won’t be t-time f-for one,” a voice peeped in from behind us. We all turned to face the source, and we found it was the Venlil Exterminator. They recoiled under the sudden gaze of our entire party, but they managed to continue. “I-I recognized the v-voice. It w-was one of the n-new recruits. They m-might as well be Y-Yulpa. If you w-want to stop them, it’s now or n-never.”
We all stared at them for a moment in disbelief that they’d willingly hand over that information to us. They were Exterminators, weren’t they? They should be allied with the voice on the radio! Kaeden, after considering the information, gave voice to my confusion. “And why are you telling us this? You’re an exterminator, shouldn’t you be trying to help them?”
“M-My husband is the Krakotl that was in the van with me!” They yelled back, stamping their footpaw on the ground in agitation. “I-I don’t care what his ancestors did a t-thousand years ago, I will not stand for those zealots burning who knows how many people! We’re not all the same, h-human!”
I was taken aback by their words. I had given up hope that there were any redeemable souls amongst the ranks of those silver-suited brahkasses, but living proof of the contrary stood before us. Their breathing was only matched by mine as my pad continued to chime in my pack. Maybe there’s hope after all.
Kaeden started frantically looking all around, his focused gaze falling on the facility, the exterminator in front of us, and the rising smoke in the distance. After a moment's hesitation, he growled to himself and shook his head. “Fine! Fucking- if you want to prove you’re different, you and your partner stand guard at the gate! They’ll probably try to send a division here, so keep on guard! And for the love of God, go ask for help if that happens!”
My tail wagged behind me as I interpreted what that meant. “So you’ll help us, Kaeden?”
He paused for a second, an agonizing second as he fully took in the situation in his mind. But ultimately, he nodded. “Let’s go, we can figure things out along the way.”
Seizing the moment, Anso quickly jumped into the van and pushed Sven out of the driver's seat, much to their visible frustration. Kaeden quickly hopped into the passenger seat, leaving me with the problem of finding a space that would fit me. I stepped over to the back of the van and threw the doors open.
The flamers and their fuel tanks were useless to us, easy to toss all three sets out onto the ground behind me. I made sure that the flamers were disabled first, of course. Just had to snap the pilot lighters and slice a hose with my claw. Even if these two said they weren’t like these “True Exterminators” I didn’t trust them one bit. I crawled inside the cramped vehicle and wiggled myself to close the doors behind me.
As I got myself settled, I watched as the Venlil Exterminator started to inspect the destroyed remains of their weapons. I squinted a glare at them and positioned myself so they couldn’t enter with me. “You two aren’t coming,” I hissed. “You know why you’re not. Try anything with the humans, and they will stop you.”
I slammed the doors shut as their expressions fell, just in time for Anso to get the van into gear. I curled myself up against the wall of the van, watching out the back window as we sped down the road. We were on our way now. On our way to save Paly and all the people gathered because their ancestors ate meat. My heart hammered in my chest, but I would need to control it for what we were about to do. I needed to focus. I needed to breathe. I needed to be calm.
Focus. Breathe. Calm
Focus.
Breathe.
Calm…

My legs couldn’t carry me anymore. I had to keep going, but I didn’t have the strength. My pants became wheezes as my body struggled to keep up with the physical exertion of running almost halfway through town. I hadn’t even looked up before now, at least with eyes not blinded by tears. The pain of Mute’s rejection still stung in my soul, a pain so visceral it threatened to rip me apart worse than any Arxur. Protector, what did I do to deserve this? Is there even a Protector, or did the Federation just- just make that up?
I didn’t have time to think about that now, I needed to get to the office. From what little I caught of the broadcast, Nikonus had said they saved us before. I knew what it likely was, but…I was desperate. I just wanted to go back home and have him embrace me like he did before. The safety and love I had felt from him was still fresh in my mind, and if there was any chance I had to get it back?
I’ll happily take it.
As I approached the office, however, something seemed off. I could smell soot in the air, but not the kind of soot that came from our flamers. This was- was…dirtier smelling, as if the fuel had been impure. Upon looking up, however, I saw something that made my stomach drop. A huge plume of smoke, billowing up into the sky. It shadowed the sun itself with its immensity and hate. Did the Exterminators burn more drugs? Or…or…
I felt a renewed vigor as I started to run towards the plume, hoping against hope that I was wrong. As soon as I turned the corner, though, my worst fears were realized. Where the office once stood now sat a burning stack of glorified rubble, every single window in sight shattered and multiple holes in the outer walls. The building was split, it was as if a giant knife had come down and sloppily sliced off its front half to spill flaming debris everywhere.
I stood in front of the building I had once called my home, surrounded by screams and the awful sound of flames roaring. I knew now there was no hope of salvation, no way this could ever be undone. I would never be able to go back to the way things were, never feel the happiness I had for that brief time. I was doomed to this life, abandoned by my love, and forced to live as an abomination devoid of a home.
I suppose that’s all a predator like me deserves.
[First]- [Prev]- {Next Story!!}
You read it right: This is going to be the final chapter of "Of Giants and Journalists." With the conclusion of Sharnet and Vekna's adventure, we will now take the time to show how this announcement has affected our characters and the galaxy at large. We're excited to announce our new series, Nature of a Giant: Aftermath! This series will not be quite as in-depth temporally as Of Giants and Journalists was, mainly because not as much will be happening in as short of a time. Rest assured, though, there will still be plenty of action across the board! You just won't have to deal with over half the story only covering a week of time!
In that vein, we are also excited to announce we are working on another bonus series, one that was teased a long time ago, Venric Lawven: Legal Legend! It will be filling the gap for content while we work on the first few chapters of Aftermath to make sure the scenes are as quality as they deserve, but will have a reduced upload schedule to once a week to accommodate for writing two series at once. On behalf of both of myself and , we'd like to thank all of our readers for sticking with us on this journey. It's hard to believe this series has been going on for over a year in one form or another, but I wouldn't have it any other way! Thank you all again for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you again with Legal Legends! And then...
The Aftermath!!

2024.05.17 12:05 Extension-Set8316 Education for All: The Push for Universal Schooling in 19th Century America

The 19th century was a period of profound transformation for American education. Amid the sweeping changes of the Industrial Revolution, the United States saw a fundamental shift from a loosely connected system of local, often voluntary schooling to a more standardized, state-supported public education system. This evolution was driven by a combination of social, economic, and political forces that underscored the necessity of education for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Early 19th Century: The Landscape of Education
In the early 1800s, education in the United States was largely decentralized. Rural areas relied on one-room schoolhouses where a single teacher would instruct students of varying ages and grades in a single room. These schools were often funded by local communities and were highly dependent on local resources and values. Education was not compulsory, and attendance was often dictated by agricultural cycles, with children needed at home during planting and harvest seasons.
The Push for Public Education
The Industrial Revolution brought about significant societal changes that highlighted the need for a more educated populace. As America transitioned from an agrarian society to an industrial one, the burgeoning cities faced numerous challenges, including poverty, crime, overcrowding, and disease. Education reformers argued that a publicly funded education system was essential for addressing these issues by providing a means for social mobility and preparing children for the demands of a rapidly industrializing economy.
Horace Mann and the Common School Movement
One of the most influential figures in the push for universal schooling was Horace Mann, often referred to as the "Father of the Common School Movement." As the Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, Mann championed the idea that education should be free, non-sectarian, and universally accessible. He believed that public education was a fundamental right and a cornerstone of a democratic society. Mann's advocacy led to the establishment of the first state-funded public schools in Massachusetts and inspired similar reforms in other states.
Expansion of Public Education
By the mid-19th century, the idea of publicly funded education began to gain traction across the United States. States like Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois passed laws mandating free public education funded by state taxes. The establishment of public high schools in cities like Boston also marked significant progress. These schools aimed to provide a more advanced education to prepare students for the demands of the industrial economy.
The push for public education was not without its challenges. Resistance came from various quarters, including those who believed that education should remain a private or religious responsibility. However, the benefits of an educated populace, particularly in an industrializing society, gradually won over many sceptics.
Education for Women and Minorities
The latter half of the 19th century also saw significant strides in education for women and minorities. Prior to this period, educational opportunities for women were limited. However, the founding of institutions such as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1837 and Vassar College in 1865 marked the beginning of greater access to higher education for women. These institutions not only provided women with educational opportunities but also played a crucial role in the broader movement for women's rights.
The Impact of Industrialization
The rapid industrialization of the United States necessitated a more educated workforce. Public schools began to incorporate more practical subjects into their curricula, such as vocational training and technical skills, to prepare students for the demands of industrial jobs. This shift was part of a broader trend toward a more utilitarian approach to education, aimed at producing a skilled labour force capable of sustaining economic growth and innovation.
Progressive Era Reforms
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of the Progressive Education Movement, which sought to address the limitations of the traditional education system. Progressives argued for a more child-centred approach to education, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and experiential learning. This period also saw the expansion of public high schools and the introduction of compulsory education laws, which required children to attend school until a certain age, thereby ensuring that education was truly universal.
Conclusion
Absolutely, the 19th century indeed saw a profound transformation in education across the United States. The push for universal schooling was not just about imparting knowledge; it was a societal and moral imperative driven by the recognition that education was fundamental to individual opportunity and national progress.
Social reformers like Horace Mann in Massachusetts and Henry Barnard in Connecticut were instrumental in advocating for the establishment of public schools and the professionalization of teaching. They argued that education was not just a privilege for the wealthy but a right for all citizens, essential for the functioning of a democratic society.
Moreover, as the nation underwent rapid industrialization and urbanization, there was a growing recognition of the need for an educated workforce capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly complex economy. This led to the expansion of public schooling and the development of a curriculum focused on practical skills alongside traditional academic subjects.
However, it's crucial to acknowledge that these advancements were not without their challenges and contradictions. Despite the rhetoric of equality, educational opportunities were often stratified along lines of race, class, and gender. African Americans, Native Americans, and other marginalized groups faced systemic discrimination and limited access to schooling. Women were often relegated to inferior educational opportunities compared to men, with limited access to higher education and professional opportunities.
Nonetheless, the reforms of the 19th century laid the groundwork for progress in the following decades. The fight for educational equity and inclusion has been ongoing, with significant strides made through movements like desegregation, Title IX, and special education legislation.
Today, the legacy of 19th-century educational reforms continues to shape the American education system. While challenges persist, such as disparities in funding and resources, there is a continued commitment to the principle that education should be accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstance. It's a testament to the enduring importance of ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to fulfill their potential and contribute to society.

2024.05.17 12:02 33jj33 I struggle pronouncing a sound of my native language (/ʎ/)

This is just a vent I suppose, maybe it's also something that will make learners of Portuguese and Italian feel less bad about struggling with this phoneme as well haha
I was born/raised in Brazil and later moved Portugal, so I'm 100% a native Portuguese speaker. However, as a child I had buck teeth, which is the only reason I can think of that justifies this problem. I also realized I clench my teeth when pronouncing /l/ for some reason?? My pronunciation of /l/ sounds completely fine though, it's just that my mouth doesn't move the same way as everyone else.
So regarding /ʎ/, my parents said I definitely didn't pronounce it correctly when I still had buck teeth. Nowadays, if I'm just speaking casually and not thinking too much about it, I'll pronounce it correctly; people actually get surprised when I tell them I struggle with this sound. I guess it's only noticeable when I'm nervous or too excited/angry/sad etc.
But yesterday, I was teaching this class of 5th graders and taught that "garlic" meant "alho". They didn't understand so I got slightly nervous as in "oh no, they've noticed" so I tried repeating the word but now with the nervousness I just mispronounced it completely. So again they didn't understand. After a 4th time embarrassing myself I just wrote it on the board and confessed my struggle. Which was a terrible idea because they proceeded to bully me till the end of the lesson😭
Anyway, that's the vent. I wonder if anyone else struggles with a particularly difficult sound of their own language. And to learners of Portuguese and Italian, if you're having difficulty with "lh" or "gl", just remember that even some native speakers have a hard time with /ʎ/ too

2024.05.17 11:58 KATPHYSH What are the next steps for my crush [F21/NB24]?

PREFACE

BACKSTORY

My breakup with my ex was kind of messy. I instigated it—he violated a few of my boundaries, said things that made me uncomfortable, and I made myself a doormat for him—but I was still polite and tried my best to be very accommodating and gentle with him. His behavior was ultimately cruel to me and he said things that hurt me very much afterwards, but I forgave him. He is currently blocked.
Considering we were all a part of the same friend group (messy, messy) I didn't know what to do at the time; was I supposed to leave everyone that I grew to love and care about? Who knows. I made a separate group chat of people I wanted and called it a day. We've been in the server since the end of March.
My relationship with my crush was intended to stay platonic. I planned on getting over the emotions, coping, and forgetting about it. This all was because I was told 1 (one) time that "flirting is allowed as long as it's platonic" and I took it to heart. I didn't want to ruin my friendship.
However, my vulnerability after the breakup kind of made me... clingier. My crush is highly reserved—very quiet, shy, and oftentimes busy—but I went out of my way to talk to them in DMs and help them open up to me. I wanted to get to know them better, even if underneath it all there was something a bit selfish going on.

CURRENT EVENTS

Nonetheless, I'm absolutely dogshit at staying quiet.
Fairly recently, after literally being sleep deprived, I made a joke in the groupchat and everyone obviously commented on it. My crush was a very 'open secret' type of thing and I got teased for it often for being "(Crush)'s #1 Fan". Anyway, after the joke was made I felt extremely guilty about it because of my own personal shame (I beat myself up often every single time I flirted with them because I was a bit of an idiot) and DMed them an apology.
I then bit the bullet, of course, and said there was a conversation me and them needed to have. My crush—who was equally as sleep deprived—basically called me out on liking them.
We had a bit of a discussion while falling asleep over text, but the feelings were reciprocated! I'm ecstatic. I don't want to compare relationships—that is never the best course of action—however when I think of this versus my ex... With my ex, I was confused, pliant, and easygoing. I didn't feel butterflies, get excited, or start rolling around in my bed and stay up for six more hours cleaning my house because of all the nerves and excitement in my body. With my crush, I feel safe. I feel comfortable. I feel like I can show the worst of myself and even if they were angry with me, they'd somehow make it gentle. I'm not being judged for not being perfect. My crush has seen the worst of me, and doesn't care. God, they said they admire me.

NEXT STEPS

The major issue, frankly, is that even though I am extremely happy that my crush likes me, I am ultimately not in the headspace or correct mentality for a relationship. I have deteriorated and fallen back into bad habits, I have made no personal progress to improving my lifestyle, and I simply don't want to treat my crush like a rebound (even if, for all intents and purposes, it kind of is one).
I don't know when I'll be ready. I don't know if it'll be a month from now, two months, or an entire year. I have no idea what I want.
I live in a very impoverished part of the USA—the lower, southern portion—and my crush lives in Canada. It's silly, but I'm very insecure about being southern and my ex even used to blatantly refuse to visit me because of it. Not only that, but I'm disabled. I have health issues and need physical therapy before I'd be able to get a job and an income to afford anything.
To me, I am not worthy of being loved in the state I am because I can only give words or phone calls. I can't give gifts, my love, or my body. I can't visit them and probably won't be available to for at minimum two years. A lot of my past relationships relied on me being a giver. I'm too used to it. It's selfish to think this way and quite pedantic, but I'm not sure what else to do. I know I need to work on my self worth, and that's my goal too.
Regardless, not the point of the post.
Considering me and my crush reciprocated feelings, both feel that we aren't ready for a relationship, and both don't really have the means to do anything with or for one another, do I still stay? Do I still hope for it? Or do I just acknowledge that we like each other and make no move to build and foster it into something that lasts?
What do we do now that it's in the open?

TL;DR

I have just gotten out a relationship with someone from a mutual friend group as my crush. I have known them for nearly a year, and recently confessed. I am not mentally ready to be in a relationship with them and the distance—given I have no means to actually visit them at all for probably literally two/three years—is daunting. Do I keep fostering this relationship and hope they wait for me? Or do I accept that even though me and my crush like each other, it will probably disappear by the time we're both ready for something?
What do we do now that we know we like each other?

FINAL WORDS

Being brutally honest about my situation like this is a bit embarrassing—I understand how it can paint me in a bad light—however realistically I think it should be addressed and at least... aired out.
I don't want to fuck this up.

If you haven’t read MK Raina’s memoir - Before I forget, do it
So I saw an article that was shared here or somewhere else I read it, about the protest march taken by KPs during Moi Muqaddas. It was an excerpt from noted theatre artist MK Raina. Book released on 30th April and I got my hands on it. What baffled me that no seems to have read it. Here are few things to sum it up for you all that I found very interesting. (For more reference check pics).
1- MK Raina met both Mushtaq Ali (in 1991)and Lassa Kaul (Director Doordarshan, 89-90) a week before they were killed. He described how Lass Kaul was feeling and the reason behind that feeling - governors office and local police.
2- How fear was instilled in KPs. No one knows who was behind it.
3- how not even an elder brother told his neighbour younger brother that they are leaving Kashmir. I used to ask my mom and dad same thing. Did we really chase them away? They always said no one has an idea. One morning we woke to see them all gone. Our immediate KP neighbours would travel to Delhi for winters but they never returned back in 92. MK Raina confirms it.
4- he calls it migration.
5- starts calling militants terrorists but mid chapter after starts calling them militants
6- the chapter about his mom in coma, city under curfew and the unknown guy helping them (guess who it was) the chapter is so much about our life.
7-calls the movement highly organised
8 Hindu high school ve Islamia school rivalry
Most of how he described 70s and 80s is pretty similar to how my father does. It’s so beautiful. Makes me long for that era.
Do read the book. I loved it.

2024.05.17 11:33 darkslide3 Intel Baseline Profile on a 13700K

I've watched Jays video from a few days ago about how to enable Intel's Baseline Profile in ASUS bios to get the max out of your CPU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3StcUhVRWQ&t=17s
However, I wasn't able to find the full power delivery spec for my 13700K.
My board is a Strix Z690-E Gaming Wifi, with G.Skill Trident Z 32GB 6400 - XMP 1 enabled..
My CPU is manually undervolted to 1.33000, and in BIOS I set MCH to Disabled - Enforce all limits.
I went ahead and applied the Intel Baseline Profile, but I have no idea what is the recommended CPU/Core limit Amps, according to Jay it should be 400A, but that's relevant to the 14 series I believe and not the 13 series.
After enabling the baseline profile while keeping the underplot, my R23 score dropped from 30K to around 25K. I reloaded all my BIOS settings to what they were before, and not I'm getting 28,000.
Before I started fiddling with stuff, my score used to surpass 30,000... have no idea why.
Any assistance will be appreciated 🙏🏼

2024.05.17 11:13 EmbarrassedWindow657 Plateau?

I’ve been on Saxenda since November 2023, started at 117kg, now fluctuating around 100kg. I was on 0.6mg for 2 months then moved to 1.2mg for another 2 months, moved to 1.8 for a short time and now on 2.4. My weight has not moved since beginning of March. Food noise came back when I was on 1.8, not feeling that full feeling anymore. I was doing daily hour walks over summer but this weather and busyness of work has stopped that. I’m thinking of starting that up again but the idea of walking in the rain does not attract, and I really don’t enjoy going to the gym around other people.
Has anyone else experienced this? Tips? Ideas?
