2024.06.05 05:30 Ok-Picture4903 Can somebody help me with Lore?

On the first session, I was with the friend of my DM (Wizard) here we met the other pc and characters there was:
DM: long time friend of mine and introduce me in Dungeons and Dragons and letting me play my first campaign. Enjoys angst and drama. But they are still funny and a rules lawyer. They will do rule of cool. As they say.
Shiela (Elf, Wizard [Order of Scribes]) LN: -I met her the first time in our session zero and by far my only friend in the group. Base from what I gathered her character is solely dream is to have the archmage recognize her work and research about how can they bring back the forgotten spells of the Netheril? Did I say that right? -So yeah she is basically researching on getting some scrolls that points out that 10th level spells still exist and can be performed. -She will try amd exploit every information as possible even it will cause her life. -She is the follower of Mystra.
Me: Alexander (Aasimar, Cleric [Life Domain]) LG: -I was there to stop my god Lathander for going whole Noah's arc after his favorite champion was killed by Vecna. -So from Deva I became my mortal and in my quest to prove that evil can be redeemed. -And now I see that I really have to save my entire party from themselves!
Cesar (Haregeon, Rogue [Arcane Trickster]) TN: -A father on a quest to avenge his wife from being killed by Vecna but still pay her daughter's college funds who is a wizarding school that our wizard graduated. Godless. -He in his words "Gods, Royalties, and politicians are all basically Nazi" but his still respectful that we follow our gods just say don't rub it off him. -Out of anyone in the group he says Im the only one who needs to be alive with him at some point if things go south. And he add "Just say the word and I will bust both of our asses out in this hell joint of a party"
Zagerall (Half-Orc Barbarian [Path of Zealot]) CN: -Has experienced all of the racism comments of people and doomed to spent his life to slay everything because his the chosen of the God Talos. -From what I gathered while we are in a session he doesn't care about his life on a quest with us just to be killed and be done with his life as his God's killing machine. -Rolls with disadvantage on his death saving throw and don't want his racial feature relentless endurance so he has to go with the other enemy and activate reckless for him to be killed with advantage. -As well when he rages the DM ask him to roll a wisdom saving throw at the start of his turn or became feral lunatic. -He somtimes hate my character when I healed him but for me that's him sticking on his character belief but he tolerates me other than my wizard companion who he hates. -We both don't know why but his vibe just change as the wizard starts to speak like he really took every word that the wizard with a heavy spite.
Sylstra (Yuan-Ti Bard [College of Eloquence]) NE: -She is basically the spawn if Meg and Jessica Rabbit and go in her villain arc. ZShe always has her way on people with her silver venomous tongue. -And she really do the princess of Disney role play where sometimes she just sings. -In real life his boyfriend was the rogue who I just met the boyfriend is chill and she is not. -Server of Grazz't. -I don't who that is I was hoping you guys can catch me up with the lore because want I find is he and Tasha had a basically Stockholm Syndrome relationship. Lore please! -In addition she doesn't want to be with our Paladin since they have a chaos of their own to unleash and our Paladin is in her words "A low born whom holding Pandora's Box that will explode eventually and I don't want to be anywhere of the explosion radius. I just want to sit in the corner having a caviar and champagne and watch as he realizes he fucked himself."
Leonidas (Black Dragonborn Paladin [Oath of Glory]): -Basically as far the session 1 goes his arrogant but tactical, he will try to exploit loopholes and he says his a proud follower of Cyric. (God of Lies?) -I still don't know how can I try to make a connection with him -His a bit egocentric like when we are resting in a tavern he just goes to pick up 2 ladies in the Inn and do the "thing", have an extra bedroom for his sword and shield as well armor as we are done in our quest which later I will tell and ask your opinions. -But the wizard say that I have to set a line since the guy cannot be trusted and Cyric killed the previous avatar god that she follows since her god Mystra didn't go out with his god. And what will become of him is not our hands and it will his own fault. -And she doesn't know my backstory and what I was and I am sweating bullets on my back since I might have to redeem him in the best way possible or the world will suffer.
So yeah that is my notes in my first session for each character. So what do you guys think I should do to up my role play with each character? Or what things I have to watch out for as the campaign goes? Any advices? Potential ally? Enemy? Also send prayers and lores since I might need it as we continue our campaign LOL. Anyways thank you for reading!

2024.06.05 04:05 Acceptable_Cup_1183 understanding the “hipster” them on sunset island

understanding the “hipster” them on sunset island
there seems to be like a handful of people who actually know what the theme means, and having a server full of people skipping isn’t fun for anyone, so here’s your comprehensive guide to the hipster theme!
first and foremost, what is a HIPSTER? webster defines hipster as “a person who is unusually aware of and interested in new and unconventional patterns”, but it’s important to realize that the theme isn’t following a definition. rather, it’s referencing a specific era of fashion from 2015-2018 that was popular in spaces like tumblr— hipster is a contemporary subculture and NOT simply someone who follows fashion trends. in fact, the reason you find so many definitions of the word hipster is because there really isn’t a way to define a subculture.
despite that, you’ll see people in servers say “hipsters are people who follow current fashion trends” and the biggest piece of evidence to this definition being outdated is a scroll through the hipster fashion google images. you’ll find that hipsters, be it men or women, all have specific calling cards in how they dress:
  • converse
  • flannel tops (often times tied around the waist)
  • suspenders
  • leather or denim jackets
  • obscure prints and t-shirts (galaxy prints, mustaches, derpy characters, etc.)
  • glasses, sometimes oversized
  • tote bags
  • chokers, beanies, backwards hats, wide-brimmed fedoras.
physical attributes often include messy buns and space buns on women & dyed hair / thick beards and handlebar mustaches on men.
so there it is! my outfit for this theme is in the picture above. I highly, highly recommend looking up themes you get that you may not understand because it makes sunset island more fun for you and you get to help educate others in your server who may have skipped otherwise! I hope you use this and let me know what other themes you think you’d like to see explained!

2024.06.05 03:58 Remainingfrost Friend May be Into Illegal stuff

Hi. So. I’m very stressed and idk how to process this. I was looking at my friend’s following on Tumblr and saw that he followed a blog I thought was weird. It really disturbed me so I scrolled through. The blog was a gore blog (I’m not really one to judge harmless interests like that, tryna avoid the word k!nk cuz idk what will get me censored but that is what it was.) But the blog also encouraged its followers to SH directly through the ask box (like when people said they wanted to they told them to do it for them so they could get off to it) and watched their followers do it in a discord call and posted about it. They also are into SA and post about doing it to other people and are a self proclaimed necro.
I really didn’t wanna believe my friend would follow a blog about all this stuff, so I scrolled to see if they used to make tamer posts and just recently switched, but their posts have always been this way, and it was only founded five months ago. I went to see if maybe it was just a misclick and checked if they were following anybody else like that and they were following a lot of people with the same interests, and one account that posted IRL gore of deceased or near-deceased human beings.
I am a CSA victim so I’m thinking maybe that’s making me process this wrong. If he’s just looking at this stuff and not hurting anybody it may not be an issue. don’t know. I really care for this person and I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to bring it up because that would mean I have to admit to stalking his following. Any advice on how to approach this is very appreciated. Thanks.

2024.06.05 03:57 Aggravating_Pen948 My wife (F48) has been cheating on me (M41) while neglecting our three children - waiting to file for divorce but scared I won't get my children

Hi all, I (M41) just need to tell someone about this. I don't have anyone near me, and I feel like if I write it all out, then maybe it can clear my head. This will be long, but I am putting it out there because maybe if I get it written, then it will make sense to me.
So, I married my wife (F48), let’s call her May, in March of 2008. We met at a party through a mutual friend. She had graduated from a community college working as a paralegal, and I was finishing grad school for Biomechanical engineering. We hit it off right away, and within a few months, we decided to officially start dating.
May was great. She was pretty, smart, kind, and would give the shirt off her back if that meant that someone else would be warm. She has one sister that is important to this entire thing, I will call her Jane (F43). Jane and May were not very close throughout their childhood, but they became closer as they grew older.
When May and I had dated for a year, there was a conflict with her landlord and she had 30 days to leave her apartment. I obviously did not want her to be homeless, so we decided to move in together. Things were great. One thing I admired is how simple May wanted our life. Things were early, but we were seriously dating. We talked about kids, about moving to a different part of the country, what we wanted in life, and it was like we both checked off all the boxes.
When I finished my graduate degree, I proposed to May and she said yes. At this point, we had been dating for close to four years. Both our families were thrilled, and we ended up having a small wedding, saving most of our funds for the future. My parents paid for half the wedding, I only have one brother who remains unmarried but with a spouse so they wanted us to have an actual wedding. It was really fun, and it was one of the best days in my life.
After our wedding, we decided that we wanted to have kids. Additionally, I got a job with a big company which forced us to move about 14 hours away from where we met. This was very hard on May because she really loved her family, and she was used to having them right there when she needed them. However, we had talked about this prior to getting married, and if the right opportunity presented itself, then we would take it. And this was that opportunity.
So, we moved down to a southern city in the US with a great school district and relatively moderate housing prices. That is why we didn’t have such an extravagant wedding because we put a down payment down on a house. It was weird having a house and this huge job, but May and I took it in stride.
One thing about my work is that I am required to go on business trips. At first, it was for one to two days a week. However, as I progressed my way through the ladder, it soon became five day trips. From Monday morning to Friday evening. I felt bad because I knew it was difficult on May to have her husband away for so long, but I made sure we had constant contact, and when I got back, I wanted to make sure that I gave her all the dedication she deserved. Plus, the pay was really good for this job. I knew that if I could stick it out for a few years, we would have enough money to start looking into having kids.
Well, things changed when May called me multiple times when I was at the airport, getting ready to drive back home after my work week. It was odd because she would typically only call once or twice, but she then texted me frantically telling me that she needed me home asap.
I asked her what was wrong, but she said to get there when I could. I flew out of the airport, and what was typically an hour drive was closer to thirty minutes. My heart was beating so badly out of my chest, and I was worried that something bad had happened.
When I got back home, I flew through the door and it was completely dark. I started screaming for May but it was completely quiet for a few seconds. Until the lights came on and May was holding a cake with a simple plus symbol on it. I looked at her and was confused.
“What is this?” I asked, and then it dawned on me. I asked her if she was pregnant and she said yes. We hugged, cried, and were so happy to finally be parents. We hadn’t been trying but we also wouldn’t mind if we had children.
From then the next four years were an absolute whirlwind. We had three beautiful daughters, each one being about 18 months apart from one another. Things started to become crazy, with having little children and my work continuing to pick up. I tried my best to be attentive and lessen my work load to help care for my children. What I did was make it so my trips were actually in town so I didn’t have to travel. I would start early in the day, helping May wake the kids, getting them ready, and before I would leave, I would ensure that they were packed, ready for preschool, and good to go. I would then come back in the evening, around 600 to have a home cooked meal and spend time with my daughters before bed.
As the years progressed and my daughters got older, my work required me to increase my business trip days, and it was now every week that I was away Monday to Friday night. I would keep in constant contact with my kids, talking to them everyday. On the weekends, I would make sure that we would have either an activity with just the girls and I so May could get a break or all of us so we can have family bonding.
The girls became more independent, and May was thinking of going back to school to get a certification in real estate, but we always held off on the idea until the girls were in their early teens. I encouraged May to go for it, but she also said that it was too much work with the girls, and being a full time mom would make it difficult to get her certification. I didn’t argue with her on it because what she was saying was absolutely true; being a full time mom was incredibly difficult, and maybe when the girls were teenagers or pre-teens, then May could get the certification.
One evening, when the girls were in bed and May and I were in our room, she brought up the idea of moving. I was kind of surprised because I thought we both liked it where we were. Our girls grew up here, they had all their friends, all their interests, and they found this city as home. But May said that she was starting to feel suffocated and that this change would be the chance she could get to get her certification. She said it would be like a renewal. I told her that this would make my travel schedule even longer. Where we were was right near a major airport hub, so traveling was easy. But when I asked her where, she said she already knew where she wanted to be. It was right on the east coast, she said she found this house she liked, and maybe we could tour it on our next vacation to this area, in about two weeks.
I was kind of surprised about how much in depth she already knew where to go and it was apparent she had been thinking about this for awhile. I wanted to agree with her, but my thoughts were about our girls. Would it be fair for them to just suddenly uproot our lives and go to this place where they would have no friends or connections?
Two weeks later, we went on vacation. The girls were enrolled in tennis academy sessions, as all of them were very dedicated and loved the sport. We had some free time and decided to go check out the place that May had looked at. Again, I was hesitant, but when we went to the area, May fell in love. Seeing her so happy made me wonder if moving was the right idea. I mean, we had vacationed at this place twice a year for eight odd years.
May then grabbed my hands and looked at me saying that this was where she wanted to live. I told her that the houses were far out of our price range considering we have three almost pre teen girls that have to get to college, but she said she knew a house that would be right in our budget. It had been on the market for eight months and was heavily discounted. There also was an open house the next day, so we went there, and May just about was head over heels for this house.
And within two months, we had completely uprooted our lives and left. I thought we should have waited until the school year ended, but May was insistent to leave. We had talked to our girls, and they were fine with it. Though my youngest Lilly (F14) seemed to be taking the move really hard. I noticed it first at how quiet she was; she said she was fine with moving, but I could see how difficult it was for her moving to a new school with only a couple weeks left to go.
I sat down and talked with Lilly and she admitted that she said it was fine to move, but she felt like May had forced her to say yes. I told her that what she was telling me wasn’t okay, and that I understand her feelings and will talk to May about it. However, Lilly said to not tell her because it would upset May. Respecting Lilly's wishes, I didn’t tell May, but there was something in my heart telling me that something was wrong.
The school year ended and the girls were enrolled in a full time tennis program within our neighborhood. Everything was right there. We lived in a gated community with a huge tennis center, multiple pools, and right outside was a name grocery store. The girls were in biking vicinity for everything, and it felt like everything was going great.
However, I noticed that Lilly and our middle Daughter Abby (F12) were starting to become more distant from May and I. We assumed it was because they were pre-teens and liked their freedom. May then said that she wanted to get certification, and I told her to go for it and that I would support her. Also, the girls were most independent, plus the classes were in the evening, so May would still be there for our girls when she left (around 7pm) and got back when they were sleeping (around 11pm). I didn’t like the idea of leaving our girls alone for so long, but the area was very safe, and the girls had a neighbor right next door if anything happened.
Things were going well until one weekend, when I was home in the afternoon making lunch, Lilly got back home and didn’t say hi to me. She had tears in her eyes and she went to her room, locking her door.
I was majorly concerned and went to Lilly’s door and knocked on it, asking her what was wrong. But she just told me to leave her alone. I told her that if she wanted anything, she could go to my bedroom.
After a few moments of silence, Lilly unlocked her door and it was apparent she had been crying. She looked around and asked if Mom was there, and I said no, that she was studying at the library (her certification licensing exam was coming up).
Lilly wiped her tears and hugged me just crying. My heart ached and I just hugged her back, not knowing what to do. Only then did I really notice how small she had gotten. Lilly was always a bit bigger in size despite doing lots of activities and eating regular and healthy meals. This summer, I noticed she had lost weight, but now I was seeing just how much weight she had lost. It had me concerned but I wasn’t sure what to say.
I asked Lilly what was wrong but when we released she just shook her head, said thank you, and closed the door. I was absolutely confused, unsure if this was just pre teen emotions or if something was really wrong. My first instinct was to call May and ask her what to do, but I wanted to honor Lilly’s wishes and so I didn’t call May.
However, I soon became curious and went to our garage where there were medical documents sorted away. I went ahead and pulled out Lilly’s annual physical documents and noticed how drastically her weight had gone down. At 12 she was 5’3 and 130 lbs and then at 14 she was 5’4 and 110 lbs. I knew something was really wrong, and something just didn’t feel right.
As I was putting documents away, my mind kept running. I went to the fridge and curiously checked the groceries we had in there. We had groceries, but I noticed that the stuff we had was entirely new. Obviously, with a family of five we had a lot of groceries, but everything was completely new, from the day before. I pushed it out of my mind, but I made a mental note about it.
Over the next few weekends, I noticed that Lilly became more withdrawn and our other girls were acting out more. They were still younger, but the tantrums were almost daily. It wasn’t just tantrums, they were screaming matches and lots of slamming doors and hitting things. This hadn’t happened until recently, and I noticed that Lilly often had to break up the fights and would manage to calm down her sisters better than May or I.
Suddenly, a few months ago, one morning, our youngest, June (F10) , woke up in agonizing pain and we were going to take her to the hospital. But May insisted that she will go with June, and I will stay home with our other two daughters so that when they got up, we could go to the ER and they wouldn’t be panicked.
I helped June to the car, and May drove off hurriedly. I went back indoors before I noticed that May had left her phone. This sounds like a bad movie, doesn’t it?
We had an open phone policy, and I was gonna look away before I saw a notification pop up. It was from her sister.
At first I was going to walk away, but I checked the message and my whole world changed. Her sister had been warning May to stop the affair because if I found out, it would ruin everything. Of course I was confused, what just happened?
Inclined, I scrolled back and looked in horror to see that May was admitting to her sister that she missed being with who we will call Derrick and that he made her feel so much like a woman when they were together. Messages said that she couldn’t wait for her library meetings with him and that she knew it was wrong, but she started to fall in love with him.
Hurriedly, I went out other messages and looked for Derrick, but there was no contact. I looked into a search bar and typed Derrick and low and behold, under a different alias named Jenny, there were nudes, sexting, and plans to meet up almost every evening of the week when I was away on business trips.
I was so disgusted and I didn't know what to do. But logically I needed to ensure I had this contact, so I wrote down the number and information and put the message screen back to her sister.
Suddenly, this life I had thought I was leading was crumbling down. An affair… for how long? Was it just him? Was it sexual? Emotional? Have my girls seen him?
So many questions running through my mind, and behind the anger, I felt blame. If I had spent more time with May, then she wouldn’t have to chase another man.
After twenty minutes, I woke up the girls and we all went to the ER. On the way, I got a call from the hospital asking if I was June’s father and I said yes, and it turned out she had acute appendicitis and was in surgery.
I didn’t relay this to my girls who were already sleepy, and we just rode in silence with my thoughts and this whole thing. I couldn’t be mad at the moment, I had to be there for June.
Thankfully, June was okay and was allowed to go home after three days. I took off from work for the week and spent as much time with my girls as possible. May had her exam coming up and she would say goodbye to me every night at 630. She wanted to kiss me goodbye, but it was always painful when I knew that she kissed “derrick” with those same lips every night.
On Thursday, when she left, Lilly came out of her room and came to my room. She was tired and looked like she had been crying. I asked her what was wrong and she admitted to me that she had seen Derrick before in our house. She said him by name. Lilly had been thinking of telling me for some time but was always so scared. However, she was sick of it. Not just that, oh no there was so much I was missing.
What Lilly said to me was heart aching. She admitted to me that ever since she was five, she had to play mom. May apparently locked herself in her room all day and either slept or ate. There were periods where Lilly wouldn’t see May for up to three days at a time. Food would get so low that Lilly would have to make three to four trips to the grocery store and back on her bike just to get a decent amount of groceries. She had been learning to cook but wasn’t very good at it.
Additionally, she felt like her mom never liked her. She said she had tried to talk to May on various occasions about depression symptoms, but her mom always said that what she was feeling was normal. Then, Lilly said she was worried about her weight to May, and May said that Lilly wasn’t at her “ideal” body weight yet and she needed to continue restricting meals.
Yes. You heard that right. She was telling Lilly to have one meal a day that being lunch. Lilly had tennis for six hours a day, biked close to 10 miles, swam for two hours, and then had to watch over her siblings.
I was sick. I wanted to throw things, I wanted to scream at May, I wanted to divorce her and sue her and everything was so red.
Lilly said she hadn’t told me because she was scared to. And god, everything now was making sense. I told Lilly that this would be last time that May anything like that to her, and that if she wanted, I could put her into counseling to talk about her feelings.
She begged me to not say anything or do anything or else it would ruin the family. She said that she would ruin the family. But I told her that this has gone too far. I told her I loved her and that I would make sure that she couldn’t be hurt anymore. She asked me to promise her, and I did.
It was when May got back that I wanted to tell her that I knew everything, but I decided to wait until the next day when the girls were gone.Well, the day came and when the girls were gone I confronted May about the cheating. She denied it at first, saying that I was being ridiculous and that she would never cheat on me. However, I had prepared for this. I had messaged her sister prior to our discussion and her sister had admitted to me that she couldn’t hide this any longer. I also had her “boyfriend’s number” written down.
When I asked May about the number, she denied it. But when I asked if I could put the phone number in the search bar for her phone, she hesitated greatly before giving her phone to me. I put in the number and the messages came up.
Suddenly, May was crying, begging me to not leave her and that I was everything to her. She would end the affair, that it was only because I was gone so much and she had to take care of the children. I then screamed at her asking her about the days she locked herself in her room. Where the girls had to ask friends for rides to their schools (two of them didn't have buses) because she couldn’t get out of bed.
I asked her why she didn’t get Lilly consoling, why Lilly had to be the mom that she wasn't.
May was crying and said that if I left her, she would take her life. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. May suddenly went to the kitchen and grabbed a large knife, putting it to her throat and threatening to take her life right then and there.
I pleaded for her to put the knife away, but she said she would only do that if I forgave her. She said she would stop the affair and be a better mother, but I had to forgive her to do so.
I said I forgave her and then she cried into my shirt saying thank you.
This was two weeks ago.
Now, I am not sure what to do. I have started looking into divorce attorneys and alternate places to go with my girls. My business schedule is so busy that it will be incredibly difficult for me to get remote work, but I have emailed my boss explaining my situation.
The issue I am having is that all our family is over sixteen hours away. I haven’t told my parents, I haven’t told anyone. Besides Reddit now.
I want to divorce May and take my daughters. I have found a cheap two bedroom condo that is on sale; I sent out an email asking the landlord how much it would be to move in as soon as possible.
I can’t mess with our accounts at the moment or else May will become suspicious. It’s so difficult having to do this because May has reminded me that I forgave her and that we should move on for the sake of the girls.
She apparently broke it off with Derrick but I think she’s with him. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I hope to update when my boss gets back to me.
Sorry if this was a rant/ramble. I have no one to share this with in real life, and I feel like my world is falling apart. I am home right now taking a few remote days so I can watch over my daughter.
I don’t know what it is like being a single dad; I will have to fight tooth and nail to make sure that I even get my girls. May can easily concoct a story saying that I was abusive and that she should have the girls because I am often away on work and am not willing to co-parent with her.
I don’t know. Thanks for listening.

2024.06.05 03:00 StrangeAstronomer wx.CollapsiblePane problem

wx.CollapsiblePane problem
I've _almost_ got this working:
https://preview.redd.it/5d4h3vunin4d1.png?width=612&format=png&auto=webp&s=8ca51feb06ede715ce3beda1518c506cea0429c7
but:
  1. when I toggle the wx.CollapsiblePane the entire frame blanks until I re-size it. Then it looks OK until the next collapse operation.
  2. about one in 5 runs of the code it crashes my sway session.
Obviously I've committed a major sin somewhere - but where?
I've spent about 2 days trying to work this out - can someone spot the error?

06-09 kia optima no crank (no signal to relay, starts with power probe)
Hello, I’m trying to help my ex wife fix her car. I’ll try to keep this simple and organized.
‼️I removed start relay I found the proper contact wire and applied power to it and it turned over and started and idled no problem. ‼️
06-09 optima 4cyl
Key was stuck in ACC position (common issue)
Theres no anti theft light or key symbol
Removed ignition tumblr and sanded down wafers that didn’t fall flat with key in.
So Key turns over fully now, all lights work, slight clicking under dash at fuse panel when turned to start but not like a normal solid relay click, just something small maybe internal of interior fuse box.
No clicking from starter relay under hood, swapped it with pump relay, pump primed with both relays so relay is fine.
I checked the relay terminals and I couldn’t find any voltage change with key turned vs not turned. Some had 12v and then some had 0 until I changed polarity on meter probe on battery. (Nothing changed when key was let go of)
There’s a square box attached to ignition body that I figured out is a magnet that when power is applied it pushes a rod into ignition shaft body, it doesn’t function plugged in, I applied voltage to it manually and tried to turn over and nothing. ‼️PIC B‼️
There’s a small white connecter with spring loaded switch that attaches to tumblr when key is in it pushes on it connecting 2 wires together. ‼️(PICTURE A)‼️ I took it apart and manually connected the two and it has no change still won’t turn over.
Something is registering inside interior fuse box when key is turned to start but nothing outside of that. (Barely audible click)
Unplugged all connectors for fuse box and ignition, plugged back in, checked all fuses interior and exterior, put it in neutral and tried.
I have not checked the big connector at the rear of ignition (all the wires for the internal ignition switch)
Also I saw some freyed wires that were exposed under steering column and it looked like airbag or clock spring wires? ‼️picture D‼️ (pov is looking up)
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

2024.06.05 00:07 Nightfurywitch I'll say it. I'm jealous.

First off before I start this, PLEASE don't use this as a space to say anything bad about transfem people. As frustrated as I am with this issue it is by no means their fault and solidarity is important.
But I'll be honest, it STINGS how transfemcentric most trans stuff is. Not just on Reddit- if you look up trans media, 99% of the recommendation lists you'll find will be 99% transfem with one or two nonbinary ones, and MAYBE one single transmasc centric story if you're lucky.
Its this way in the wider trans sphere too. Think about it- are there ANY big trans memes thatre transmasc specific? If there are, I've missed them! You have to scroll a TON to find a single transmasc post on Egg_IRL and traaaa. Tumblr's a bit better, but it hurts a bit because everyone said to "go to tumblr, that's where all the trans guys are" only for most of the big funny users to end up being transfem anyways. And name a transmasc YouTuber that's not Jammidodger (no offense to him) or Kalvin Garrah.
It's always transfem characters people use too- Bridget, Vivian, Ferris. Yamato is like....the only big transmasc character and he's pretty minor in the story all things considered. Naoto exists, but he's a landmine of a character to even talk about most of the time. There IS Barney from Deadendia, which was an AMAZING show but guess what got cancelled by Netflix early!
Idk, it just stings. Seems like transmasc rep is becoming more common in things like books and webtoons which I really appreciate, but I just hope one day trans guys can basically have their Bridget equivalent and be just a bit more notable in the public eye.

2024.06.04 23:34 ChasHodges Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut FULLY WORKING ON STEAM DECK (NO EMULATION)

For real this time. This has easily taken 30+ hours of tinkering, but I think - think - we're finally up and running.
Would I recommend any of this if you can play the game on the Xbox / PS3 / Switch? Probably not. Even emulation via RPCS3 or Yuzu is a better option as often extolled by u/parabolee. But after realising my previous attempt at a guide was a bust, sunk cost fallacy got the better of me and I just carried on digging until finding what I *think* is a proper solution.
If something doesn't work, I'll do my best to support - there are so many steps here, I hope you forgive me if I've messed something up!
PRE-REQUISITES:
You'll need to be comfortable with using Desktop mode on Steam Deck, and have the following apps installed from the Discover store: Protontricks + Flatseal. Links to other tools required are provided in the text of the guide.
[Mapper] Type= DP
[CustomMapper:DP] Template= StandardGamepad
;Rightstick StickRightX= Axis(RotY) StickRightY= Axis(RotZ)
;Face ButtonA= Button(1) ButtonB= Button(2) ButtonX= Button(3) ButtonY= Button(4) ButtonBack= Button(7) ButtonStart= Button(8) ButtonLB= Button(5) ButtonRB= Button(6)
;Triggers TriggerLT= Axis(Z, +) TriggerRT= Axis(Z, -)
ENJOY!
(Finally, if using the Steam Deck OLED, cap the framerate using the '...' button to 60fps otherwise physics in game will be busted!!)

2024.06.04 18:21 pressedflowerszine Do you think there will ever be another 2007-2015ish era tumblr or is that a lost era of the internet?

Sorry for the basic bitch question. I know people ask this all the time but damn do I miss art scrolling tumblr back in the day. It introduced me to so many cool aesthetic movies (like those of Eric Rohmer) and art when I was a teenager. The site basically unusable for me now, full of ugly spam, low use and Reddit award gimmicks. It feels like walking through a dying mall where the few stores left are spirit Halloweens and a sears outlet having a liquidation sale. Could any new platform fill the void?
***I read once that the ethos of early tumblr made it bad for marketers. The founders wanted no ads and to uphold self expression, aesthetic UI and personal curation as its primary goal which is a bad for environment mass advertising even when they started allowing certain ads. Advertisers found tumblr users “too weird” to predictably market to, thus Tumblr was often operating at a financial loss and its downfall was inevitable.

2024.06.04 17:58 Excellent-Tax-Lj Tarisland: Comprehensive Guide to Daily and Weekly Quests

In Tarisland, you can gain a large amount of experience and various items through daily and weekly quests. Let's explore these quests and their rewards.
I. Destiny Handbook The Destiny Handbook allows you to obtain Activity Coins by completing daily, weekly, and seasonal quests, which can then be exchanged for rewards.
1.1 Daily Quests Five quests are refreshed every day at 4 AM. Players need to complete these quests within the day to earn Training Points and Experience Points. Each quest can only be completed once per day, with a maximum of 5 refreshable quests.
Daily Quest List:
It is recommended to team up with friends to complete an Elite/Secret Realm dungeon once daily for quick completion and 60 Activity Points. Among the remaining four quests, prioritize "Consume Energy Points" and "Universal Hall Clearance," and choose other tasks based on your game progress. Quest Rewards:
In addition to regular currency, daily quest rewards include Inscribed Stone Dust, Prestige Scrolls, and Tier 3 Battle Song Emblem Boxes. Inscribed Stone Dust is used to upgrade Inscribed Stones, Prestige Scrolls increase regional reputation, and Battle Song Emblem Boxes can yield Epic quality emblems. Collecting a certain number of Glorious Medals can also be exchanged for Level 40 high-level Epic equipment.
We recommend completing daily quests as a priority every day when you log into the game.
1.2 Weekly Quests (Activity Coins Cap) Weekly quests refresh every Friday at 4 AM, and players need to complete these quests within a week. When quests refresh on Friday, all quests reset, allowing players to earn rewards again.
Activity Coin Shop:
Players can earn up to 6000 Activity Coins per week. Completing certain quests will yield both Activity Coins and Battle Pass experience. Activity Coins can be exchanged for various development materials in the shop. It is recommended to first purchase "Inscribed Stone Dust" and then other items as needed. II. Seasonal Ranks Seasonal rewards are divided into three categories: Adventure Journey (PVE), Conquest Master (PVP), and Exploration Pioneer (Exploration).
Players can level up their seasonal ranks by completing cyclic tasks and seasonal challenges in various gameplay modes. The higher the seasonal rank, the richer the unlocked rewards. Each season's rewards are independent, and ranks reset at the end of the season. Unclaimed rewards are sent via mail.
Seasonal Reward Overview:
Adventure Journey: Level up by clearing dungeons and completing exclusive tasks. Conquest Master: Level up by increasing military rank and completing exclusive tasks. Exploration Pioneer: Level up by consuming stamina and completing exclusive tasks. Recommendation:
Prioritize leveling up Adventure Journey and Exploration Pioneer. Adventure Journey levels yield a large amount of equipment exchange materials and equipment refinement materials, enhancing equipment quality. Exploration Pioneer levels yield Inscribed Stone Dust and Battle Song Emblem Boxes. Conquest Master’s seasonal rewards are relatively average; it is recommended to complete other tasks first. III. Battle Pass Similar to most games, the Battle Pass in Tarisland is divided into free and paid versions.
Battle Pass Rewards:
Free Version: Includes basic development materials like Silver Coins and Inscribed Stone Dust. Paid Version: Offers more development materials, along with season-exclusive costumes and ground mounts. Battle Pass Experience and Quests:
Weekly quests provide a large amount of Battle Pass experience. In addition to weekly quests, completing seasonal achievement challenges also grants significant Battle Pass experience. We hope this guide helps you better understand and utilize daily and weekly quests, enhancing your gaming experience and character strength. Enjoy your adventures in Tarisland!

2024.06.04 17:55 Sea_Spring3976 Tumblr won't let me scroll down

I can only view one post, if i scroll at all it just jumps back to the top post on both my dash and if I view a page. It's literally impossible to use tumblr for me anymore I don't know what to do, and can't find any information other than old posts saying it's and old bug which has apparently been fixed years ago. Is there anything I can do?

2024.06.04 17:42 lykwydchykyn WTS: Daring DIY devices for developing devastating dins

Back again, ready to do some deals. Summer's on and I need to fund some heliophilic hijinks.
This post is mostly for people interested in buying, but I love a trade too! If you're interested in trading see my latest post in /letstradepedals. I post there every other week, usually on Tuesday. I got non-DIY stuff in the trade post, too.
What I got for sale is hand-built stuff that I made, mostly relatively unique or heavily tweaked designs built on vero or point to point. Many are housed in upcycled tins, a few in hammond boxes. I've also got small practice amps built inside whatevers that you can crank up and enjoy at low volumes. They all run on standard 9v pedal power.
PRICES DON'T INCLUDE SHIPPING -- I ship USPS priority using pirateship.com, so expect shipping to be between $5 and $15 depending on how close you are to Tennessee. Would prefer to not deal with international shipping, but if you want it bad enough to pay for it, I'm game.
I accept Paypal or Venmo.

Bazz Me Fuss You #1 $90 PIC DEMO A bazz-fussified perversion of the Escobedo push-me-pull-you, featuring controls for octave and volume. This is the first unit I've built using my own custom PCB. Housed in a painted 125B with top jacks.
Space Fuzz $80 PIC DEMO This is a Hollis crash sync fuzz that I souped up with an LFO to modulate the filtesync frequency. Really wild flangery/phasey type gated fuzz sound. At the right settings you can get some octave-down effects as well. Housed in a ~3.5 inch square game tin reinforced with recycled plastic. Pretty pleased with this build.
SwirlFuzz $75 PIC DEMO Modulated octave fuzz prototype. It's an octave fuzz, but you can switch on an LFO to modulate the octave amount. Controls for Rate, Depth, Gain, and Volume, plus switches for waveshape and mode (Normal/Octave/Modulated). In a circular tin reinforced with recycled plastic.
Big Green Fuzz for Attractive Bass Players $75 PIC Demo Like my bazz-me-fuss-you circuit, but with a big muff tone stack, a clean blend, and optional clippers for more compression. Housed in a big round tin reinforced with recycled plastic and designed specifically for attractive bass players. Unattractive ones may not really gel with this.
Creature from the planet Chyowngg $65 PIC Demo Prototype of a unique fuzz I've been developing that I call the Chyowngg fuzz. It's a 2-stage octaver that gives a bright synthy tone with a distinctive envelope (hence the name). You can toggle each stage from octave to non-octave mode for a variety of interesting timbres. Also has a tone control, but the tone control is before the octave stages so it results in interesting behaviors depending on the switch settings. It's in a tin meant to be painted like an alien, though some say it looks more like a triceratops.
Dirt Cake $65 PIC DEMO A filthy, filthy fuzz based loosely on the Harmonic Percolator, but with a different approach to gain control and a pot to adjust the amount of diode clipping (compression). Controls are for clipping compression, volume, and gain. Built point-to-point and housed in a tin reinforced with recycled plastic.
Baller Fuzz $60 PIC DEMO Another Bazz-Me-Fuss-You build with an added BMP-style tone control. In a slightly beaten-up heart-shaped basketball tin. Y'all ready for this?
Dumbo's Bazzrite Fussrite $40 PIC Demo A bazz-fussified mosrite fuzzrite circuit I cobbled together in point-to-point wiring style. Housed in a little Dumbo puzzle tin with GLITTER! Controls are for balance (kind of tone-cum-gain) and volume.
Drives, Distortions, and Boosts
Name Price Links Notes
Bronze Drive $85 PIC Demo This is a point-to-point, transistor based overdrive I designed based loosely on the Davisson Easy Drive. Good for low-gain crunchy tones and plenty of output volume on tap if you want it for a boost. Tone circuit is like a BMP stack but with a mid hump instead of a mid cut. Housed in a painted 125B with top jacks.
Copper ZenerMorph Drive $65 PIC Demo This is an experiment in zener diode clipping. Nice crispy drive that gets beefier as you turn up the gain, lots of good edge-of-breakup tones to be had. Housed in a decorated tin reinforced with some plastic.
GOOST $65 PIC A simple JFET boost vaguely based on the Runoffgroove Fetzer valve. Switch toggles bass cut for a treble-boosting sound. Point-to-point build housed in a small tin reinforced with recycled plastic.
B is for Beast $55 PIC DEMO This fun little drive/boost consists of two cascading MOSFET gain stages with optional clipping in between. It goes from clean and loud to massive wall-of-gain distortion nicely. Controls for gain, clipping, and volume. In a small heart-shaped tin about 4in by 4in.
Shining Hope Drive $40 PIC Demo Differential mirroring drive, gives a kind of overdriven-mixer-channel distortion. Controls for gain, tone, and volume. Housed in a star-shaped Christmas tin.
Green Sparkler Boost $35 PIC Just an Escobedo Duende JFET boost built point-to-point in a sparkly little round tin. Gives a little gain and a bit of warmth to the tone.
Non-Dirt
Name Tier Links Notes
Quack like a penguin $70 PIC DEMO Third build of the Chykka Wakka, a WIP all-transistor envelope filter. This one is built on vero, and features controls for Q, Range, and Attack, as well as toggles for Voicing and envelope smoothing. Housed in a smallish penguin tin reinforced with recycled plastic.
Gift of Chykka Wakka $65 PIC DEMO First build of an all-transistor envelope filter I designed. Built point-to-point style and housed in a little giftbox tin reinforced with recycled plastic. Controls for Q and Sweep, switch toggles envelope smoothing.
Vortex of Funk $65 PIC DEMO Second build of the Chykka-Wakka circuit, this one features attack, Q, and range controls. Built point-to-point and housed in a painted tin.
BZZZ BOOP BEEP $50 PIC DEMO A basic square wave oscillator on a momentary switch. Can go from bzzz to boop to beep with a sweep of the big knob. Also has tone and volume controls, and a 3-way switch for different decay amounts. Use it to simulate a spring door stopper or dying cow. Or bleep your foul-mouthed frontman. Or mess with the sound guy. Or send Morse code to the bar. I dunno. Housed in a painted tin reinforced with recycled plastic.
Little Amps
Name Price Links Description
Ample iMank $65 PICS DEMO This is a Runoffgroove Ruby Amplifier built into this old multimedia speaker enclosure designed to look like an old iMac. Glows blue when you turn it on. It runs from a standard 9v pedal power. It's not terribly loud, nor terribly clean, but if you dig the classic mac vibe it might be fun. Controls for gain and volume, and a power switch on the back.
Nosy Amp $75 PICS DEMO Another solid-state amp based on the Ruby amplifier, housed in a repurposed bookshelf speaker. This one actually has pretty decent volume, even on 9V (can run on 12V as well for more), and can stay clean while getting loud enough for a quiet jam with friends.
That's all for now. Got some wacky stuff on the bench right now, so stay tuned...

2024.06.04 17:33 KyluAce Pixel 8 Pro vs OnePlus 12 compare

Hello everyone, I’ve been using the Pixel 8 Pro (P8P) for about half a year and the OnePlus 12 (OP12) for about a month. I thought it would be a good time to compare these two phones. As an Android Developer with 10 years of experience, I consider myself a demanding user who uses the phone for a variety of purposes including normal usage, fun, and work.
To start with, I purchased the Pixel 8 Pro 12/256 version for 1159€ from the Google Store, which included the Google Pixel Watch 2 as a pre-order bonus. The OnePlus 12 (16/512 version) was bought from TradingShenzhen for approximately 670€. Currently, the Pixel 8 Pro can be purchased for around 850€.
Let’s talk about the packaging. The Pixel 8 Pro comes only with a USB-C cable, which in my opinion, is of really poor quality. I’ve had connection issues with these cables from Google from time to time. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12 comes with a 100W charger, a USB-C cable, and a classic case. Considering the package and price, the OnePlus 12 is a clear winner for me.
Moving on to the battery and charging. The Pixel 8 Pro has a 5000mAh battery while the OnePlus 12 has a 5400mAh capacity. But that’s just raw data that anyone can Google. In practice, I find the Pixel 8 Pro’s battery to be quite disappointing. Despite numerous optimizations, I was only able to achieve around 5 hours of screen-on time (SOT) (with lower resolution, disabled 5G, location and other permissions disabled for most apps, and battery optimizations). On the other hand, achieving 7 hours of SOT on the OnePlus 12 is quite normal without any optimizations. I use both phones with lower resolution and higher refresh rate. The Pixel 8 Pro can be charged at a maximum speed of 30W, but we need a special charger for that (the same is true for the OnePlus, but they provide the charger). I tried charging the Pixel with a bunch of chargers that I have at home, and the maximum speed that I reached was 20W, which is quite poor. The combination of poor battery life and slow charging speed is really annoying. In this case, the OnePlus 12 with its 100W charging speed is the clear winner.
Let’s discuss the screen. The Pixel 8 Pro has a flat 1344x2992 6.70" screen and the OnePlus 12 has a curved 1440x3168 6.82" screen. Both are really great screens. The OnePlus 12 has slightly higher brightness and resolution. However, the main differences for me are that the Pixel’s screen is flat and the OnePlus’s is curved, and the screen color options (Google gives us 2 options and OnePlus gives us 3 options and an additional manual adjust option). The OnePlus 12 is my first phone with a curved screen and I often feel insecure about it. I’ve stopped placing the phone screen down because I’m worried about it. Also, when I look at the screen from a specific angle on the curved side, it looks strange (different colors). But for normal usage, it’s okay, and gestures may be easier. If we are looking at specifications, the OP12 is the winner (higher brightness, higher resolution, and curved screens are more expensive), but for me, both of them are at a really high level.
Performance / Heating When it comes to efficiency and temperature management, the OnePlus 12, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, completely outclasses the Google Tensor 3 in the Pixel. The Pixel tends to heat up during normal usage on mobile data (LTE), and even more so during gaming, leading to a noticeable drop in performance. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12 only gets slightly warm when unplugged from its 100W charger, and it’s still cooler than the Pixel charging at 20W. Comparing the OnePlus 12’s performance with the Pixel 8 Pro feels like comparing this year’s flagship with a mid-range phone from 2020-2022. The OnePlus 12 is the clear winner here.
Connectivity Connectivity might seem like an odd category, but it’s quite important to me. I have the Chinese version of the OnePlus 12 (without eSIM), and I must say, I was initially worried about network coverage. However, it’s noticeably better than the Google Pixel. Even when testing my Wi-Fi range, the results were shocking. I connected both phones to the same Wi-Fi network and moved to the farthest corner of my home. At this point, the OnePlus still had full range (4/4), while the Pixel was down to half (2/4). Running several speed tests, the OnePlus consistently achieved about 120 Mbps, while the Pixel only managed 20 Mbps - that’s a five-fold difference! The OnePlus also outperforms the Pixel in terms of mobile data coverage.
Camera I’m not a professional photographer. Like most people, I use my phone’s camera to share photos on social media or send them to friends and family. As we know, apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger tend to degrade photo quality, and in 2024, most flagship phones have good cameras whose potential we don’t fully utilize. However, I did notice some differences between the two phone cameras. Both phones have quite good cameras, not the best on the market, but still very good. Pixel photos have more subdued colors, while OnePlus photos are brighter . Both companies should work on video stabilization. The Pixel has a slight issue with maintaining focus on one thing, making other elements a bit blurry. I like both cameras, and it’s hard to choose a better one - they’re different for sure. If you’re interested, I can take some photos and upload them for comparison (we can do a blind test).
System The primary reason I opted for a Pixel was its operating system. I was quite frustrated with certain aspects of Android that didn’t function well, and I had heard that Pixels are akin to iPhones in the world of Android. Although I’ve never owned an iPhone, I found little difference between Pixels and other brands. The same issues persist, such as missing notifications (a significant problem, I believe, with the Pixel 8 Pro), and apps being killed in the background. In my view, the main distinction between Pixels and other brands is the absence of certain features. Brands like OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Samsung have their own software packed with useful features like Samsung Dex, app cloning, floating windows, etc. Thus, when the system/software behaves similarly but offers less, the choice is clear.
Additional Annoyances on Pixel:
Additional Annoyances on OnePlus:
In Summary In my opinion, the OnePlus 12 significantly outshines Pixel 8 Pro, When compared to the OnePlus, the Pixel appears to be a mid-range phone from 2022, albeit with a commendable camera. The OnePlus 12 triumphs over the Pixel in numerous categories, including:

2024.06.04 17:25 LieutenantTurtles Cannot 'Init' a (possibly damaged) HDD because the check-mark box is greyed out.

There is a red icon which appears on the HikConnect App and it apparently means 'HDD Exception' according to the picture (scroll down) in this forum: https://www.use-ip.co.uk/forum/threads/hik-connect-red-and-blue-box-with-arrow-icons.9952/
I also cannot access playback mode at all. In the storage menu, under status it says ‘Repairing 01%’ and shows 0MB as free space. The HDD has been running for about 3 years now without any hiccups.
I have tried to initialise the HDD but the check-mark box is greyed out. Anyone know what to do in this case?

2024.06.04 17:00 Derp_Herpson Feature Request: Reply to YT Comments with Reply Button Only

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to post a feature request like this. If it's not, I apologize to moderators who have to remove it.
Often when I'm browsing the comments section on a YouTube video, I accidentally tap the body of the comment itself when I mean to tap the "Read More" button or just when scrolling by a comment. When you tap the body of a comment, YouTube pulls up the text box and keyboard to draft a reply to that comment. Each comment already has a dedicated icon to serve as the reply button, yet the whole comment itself appear to serve the same purpose. Sometimes when pulling up the keyboard to draft a reply, the back button to remove it stops working and I have to wait about 30 seconds for the keyboard to finally leave the screen. I'm not sure if that last issue is just a me-problem because of custom keyboard apps or something, but it's very annoying to have my phone effectively disabled for around 30 seconds because I accidentally fat fingered hitting the "Read More" and tapped the body of the comment.
I'm suggesting that the feature to reply to a comment by tapping the body of the comment be disabled and the only way to reply to a comment is to tap the dedicated reply button that already exists.

2024.06.04 15:52 noseonarug17 How Dumb and Wrong Was I? - A 5 Year Retrospective

In 2019, during the Before Times, I started getting more into the development side of the MLB, and decided to do some deep dives on top Twins prospects. Mostly, I just wanted to get a feel for each player, so I read varying amounts of scouting reports on each player and took a look at their performance/progression in the minors, based almost entirely in stats. Box score scouting is not exactly foolproof (though better in baseball than football), so my own investigation wasn't necessarily valuable insight, but it helped to write things out so I figured I might as well post my findings. I enjoyed it enough to check out some players from outside the top 30 who I thought had a shot, as well as the 2019 draft class.
With that class at the five year mark, and the 2024 draft coming up next month, I figured it was time to go back and see how our top prospects from that time did and if I nailed any picks (or, more likely, when I was horribly wrong). Of course, I still don't know what I'm talking about, so this is all just for fun! I don't really expect anyone to read every word, it's mostly for me. Here is a hub post with links to each writeup I did and a table for where each player appears. For the top 30 players, I had both an initial deep dive and a later update; sleepers have only the initial analysis. I'll link the initial analysis for each section, and baseball-reference page for each player.
This took entirely too long, and so there's a lot of context/detail missing, particularly for the guys whose careers flamed out post-COVID - I just kind of assumed most of those guys were affected by the gap year, but I'm sure there are other circumstances I missed. At any rate, scrolling through baseball-reference is a nice zen thing for me, so maybe I'll try doing this again with our current top 30...

Top 30

This is the top 30 as of my first post - 5 years ago today as I write this (plus a day by the time I post).

#1-5

1. Royce Lewis, SS
I don't think I had any particular take on Royce (or most of the very top prospects), but he's gone through the most in this period, I think, so let's look at that instead.
When I first checked in on Royce, he was struggling a bit with the transition to A+ due to strikeout rate, but he improved a lot in the next couple months and had just earned a promotion to AA when I went back for an update. I wasn't yet aware that the FSL was a particularly pitcher friendly league, nor was I thinking about age relative to level, so I was a little confused about the situation.
At the time, Royce's ETA was 2020 and he was just 20, so it seemed he had a lot of work to do if he was going to get there in a year. Unfortunately, COVID killed any chance of that, and then he missed 2021 with an ACL tear. Despite all that, he got his debut in May 2022 - after just a month in AAA - due to an injury to Carlos Correa, but tore his ACL again after just a month.
It was a nightmare scenario, but Royce returned in 2023 and quickly cemented himself as a local legend and fan favorite. Despite having just 282 PAs in his MLB career, I think everyone is pretty confident about him as a player heading forward. It's just a question of staying healthy.
2. Alex Kirilloff, RF
In 2019, I thought Kirilloff seemed like a very consistent player, which really hasn't been true in the bigs thus far. He's certainly been starter level in the MLB, and had a 116 OPS+ last year, but has been prone to extended cold stretches. He was terrible in the playoffs last year, and had a bad May this year - though April was good enough that he's still about a league average hitter on the year. AK seems to have a lot of nagging injuries, particularly the wrist last year, which certainly contribrute. The book is by no means closed on him, but he's not yet the player fans hoped he'd be, and certainly hasn't been the consistent producer I pegged him as.
3. Brusdar Graterol, RHP
Brusdar was dominating AA in 2019, but I wrote at the end of July that we should "expect to see him in at least AAA [if not AA] for the majority of 2020." He made his MLB debut barely a month later, and pitched in 23 games in 2020 (for LAD). In my defense, he only spent 12 games at AA. He also made the transition to relief right around that time, so I was fully expecting him to be starting. We only got a handful of appearances in a Twins uniform, as Brusdar was part of the trade for Maeda. He took some time to acclimate to the MLB, but was elite in 2023 with a 1.20 ERA. Unfortunately, he was injured in spring training and has yet to play this year.
4. Wander Javier, SS
Javier was just returning from a torn labrum in mid 2019, and despite a few hot streaks, his numbers gave us a lot of reason to be concerned. After 2020, he spent two years struggling at A+, with decent slugging but a bad average and abysmal strikeout rates. They gave him the last three weeks of 2022 to try his hand at AAA, and he didn't look like he belonged, going 2-20 with a homer and a .100/.240/.250 slashline. He elected FA and was signed to the Padres organization, but retired prior to the 2023 season.
5. Trevor Larnach, LF
Larnach was our first round pick in 2018, the first year I paid attention to the MLB draft, and that's probably a factor in me being one of very few people to own a Trevor Larnach jersey. He raked pretty much immediately, and continued to at pretty much every minor league level, so I don't think I was wrong to be high on him right away. Before long in the majors, though, it became clear that he was a fastball hitter, and really struggled when opposing pitchers just spammed breaking balls. Though he hovered around 100 OPS+ in his major league time in 2022 and 2023, he lost his spot to Matt Wallner, and I really felt like he wasn't getting a fair shake - part just due to competition at the position, but also from the fans. That's not to say he didn't need to improve, of course. But with his opportunity so far this year, he has - he's currently got career bests in every slashline category, home run rate, and strikeout rate. Of course, he's almost exclusively facing lefties, but we can't really analyze that.

#6-10

6. Brent Rooker, LF
I think Rooker always kind of felt like the odd man out among our corner outfielder prospects. He raked in AAA in 2019, but never really broke the Twins lineup and was eventually included with Rogers for Paddack/Pagan in 2022. He had a weird path from there, getting traded to KC for peanuts before being waived in the offseason picked up by Oakland. It was a great opportunity for playing time, and almost inexplicably, he's an all-star who's on track to be even better this year. That's baseball, baby.
7. Jhoan Duran, RHP
Duran, you may forget, was part of the return for Eduardo Escobar. I don't think I knew he was such a flamethrower, but I liked what I saw:
I've obviously gone from knowing very little about this guy to gushing about him over the course of a few paragraphs, so I'll stop to allow myself to finish today in case I get enamored with one of the other guys and do this again.
I think we can say, with emphasis, that Duran has worked out.
8. Lewis Thorpe, LHP
A rare Aussie prospect, my analysis of Thorpe boiled down to that he had a decent baseline, but his stats were marred by a few bad games instead of being improved by some great games. He very briefly looked good in the MLB (timed well enough to fool me in my update post), but couldn't sustain any success. The absence of a minor league in 2020 probably hurt him, but he left the org in 2021 and had a rough year in KC AA in 2022, and is now playing in the Australian and Mexican leagues.
9. Blayne Enlow, RHP
Enlow was a high school pitching prospect drafted in the third round, and was just 20 in 2019, which gave us some reason to cut him some slack as he struggled at A+. He came out of the gate hot after COVID, but just didn't progress fast enough - he finally reached AAA last June, a full six years after being drafted, and posted an ERA just below 8 in 45.1 innings. He's now in the Giants system, where he put up an 8.22 ERA in 7.2 innings before suffering a season-ending injury.
10. Nick Gordon, SS
Even at the time, Gordon felt like a legacy inclusion in the top 10 Twins prospects. Despite a bit of a bounce back, he wasn't producing particularly well in the minors. Nonetheless, he had some good moments in his time at the major leagues, and provided some value as a utility guy. When he was traded for Steven Okert, I doubt many Twins fans were too broken up about it, but I think he earned a friendly farewell despite his certified bust status.

#11-15

11. Stephen Gonsalves, LHP
Gonsalves had already had an uninspiring 2018 debut, and spent most of 2019 injured, pitching only 13.0 innings. He already seemed like he was on a downward turn, so I wasn't optimistic about him, but between the injury and COVID, his time in the org was up after 2020. He's pitched a mere 4.1 innings in the MLB since, all in 2021 with Boston, and is currently in the Rockies organization during his 12th minor league season.
12. Akil Baddoo, CF
Baddoo had gotten off to a slow start in 2019 at A+, and it was ended prematurely due to injury. The Twins chose not to add him to the 40-man roster after 2020, and he was picked in the Rule 5 draft by the Tigers. He was outstanding as a rookie, leading to a lot of gnashing of teeth on this subreddit, but has dropped off a lot since - maybe a decent player, but not someone we need to be too sad about losing.
13. Yunior Severino, 2B
When I first investigated Severino, he was a 19 year old former IFA who'd barely played outside rookie ball and was injured, so there wasn't much to discuss. He's now the #22 prospect in the organization, and has had a steady rise through the minors, culminating in a 35 home run season in 2023 (about a third of the year at AAA, the rest in AA). The numbers are down so far this year, but have been getting better in the last few weeks. He's a high strikeout guy, but a little refinement can go a long way, and the Twins must have some faith as he was added to the 40-man ahead of last year's Rule 5 draft. This year might prove to be a crossroads for him - if his numbers keep climbing in AAA, he could be playing in the majors regularly next year, whether that's for the Twins or a trade spot. Here's a recent Twins Daily scouting report with some more info.
14. Jose Miranda, 3B
Miranda was showing signs of progress in 2019, but by late in the season I still felt like his long term spot was more likely a second option infielder than a bonafide starter. After a rough 2023, I think we might be able to say he's back now - he's had one fewer PA at the MLB level than last year, and aside from a low walk rate, his numbers are up from his stellar rookie season. At any rate, he's blown past my expectations.
15. Gilberto Celestino, CF
Part of the Ryan Pressly trade, Celestino had a sudden and absurd improvement in his hitting numbers between my original research and the update, but was always more of a defensive prospect than a bat. He debuted in 2021 and played a lot in 2022, but found himself stuck in AAA last year and is now on Pittsburgh's AAA team. I liked him in his time here, but I think we just didn't need him with the number of guys already fighting for outfield spots. Kind of wish we had him instead of Margot, though.

#16-20

16. Ryan Jeffers, C
Overall, Jeffers doesn't project to be an offensive or defensive superstar, but a guy that gives you decent offensive production at a position that often lacks it.
I may have been wrong about this.
Depending on how his catching skills come along, that could mean anything from career backup to everyday starter.
You could build an entire Triwizard Tournament event with all this hedge.
17. Luis Arraez, 2B
Arraez had already broken out by the time I wrote this, but this seems prescient:
Now, to be fair, his BABIP is .431, which is a titch high, but the way he pokes the ball through holes, it almost seems sustainable.
18. Jorge Alcala, RHP
Alcala had an up-and-down 2019, and was moved to the bullpen late. I was somewhat down on him but hoped he could condense the bright spots as a starter into quality relief pitching. He surprised me by actually debuting in 2019 (1.2 scoreless) and has mostly been good since; though his return from injury last year was disappointing, he's been good when healthy this year.
19. Jordan Balazovic, RHP
We had a nice streak of success stories, but this may be the end of them. Balazovic shot up to the #4 Twins prospect over the course of the 2019 season, and deservedly so, but cooled off post-COVID and has been plain bad in AAA, with a 6.43 ERA in 140 IP over 3 seasons. He was only mediocre in relief during his time at MLB last year - 4.44 ERA in 24.1 IP - but he's still struggling in St. Paul. He's still got a 12.9 K/9, but that won't matter if he can't keep baserunners down - currently a 1.775 WHIP. We'll see if he can ascend again, but it seems like a lot of Twins fans are kind of over him.
20. Misael Urbina, CF
The #3 international prospect in 2018, Urbina was in his first season in 2019, so I wasn't trying to project anything for a 17 year old in the DSL. He's still only 22, but he's had a slow rise through the minors and is in his second year at A+. The numbers are much better than last year, but that's primarily because last year they were bad. According to Twins Daily, he's still got great tools but - clearly - the production needs to catch up. Again, the COVID year was not helpful.

#21-25

21. Zack Littell, RHP
Littell pitched 57.1 MLB innings from 2018 and 2019, and was pretty good in the latter year, though he wasn't getting much high leverage work. I expected he'd done enough to get a bullpen spot in 2020, which he did, but he got blown up in his first appearance (4 R, 3 HR) and after just 6 appearances, he went to the IL for elbow inflammation and never pitched for the Twins again (remember, COVID season). Since then, he's had one good year in SF and has been decent-ish for the Rays for the last year or so.
22. LaMonte Wade, CF
When I got to Wade, he had found his way to the IL just a few PAs into his MLB career after he Buxton'd himself. Based on his numbers, I figured he was a high contact guy who'd play solid defense, but would need to find power to improve of odds of starting, and probably find a situation with more opportunity in the outfield. And hey - I was bang on! He was traded to the Giants for a reliever (we don't need to talk about it) and found himself in a big role. He had 381 PAs and hit 18 homers in 2021, and aside from a sophomore slump, has been a very good player. He's already accumulated 2.0 bWAR this year, probably because he has a whopping .470 OBP - which leads the league by .049 - thanks to a .050 walk rate. Much like Rooker, he's inexplicably found great success that he probably never would have had the opportunity for here.
23. Griffin Jax, RHP
I was pretty impressed by Jax's consistency in the minors, and thought he'd be good even with a likely move to the bullpen. I'm happy to declare that one a hit.
24. Ben Rortvedt, C
I thought Rortvedt was interesting, mostly because I have no idea how to tell if a catcher is good defensively and offense from the position is exciting. Also, this:format(webp)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/73236768/IMG_0302.0.jpg). He ended up as the smallest part of the Josh Donaldson trade, but was injured and wound up not playing much. The Rays acquired him in a 3-way trade of nobodies this offseason, and he was inexplicably excellent in April before going back to his usual ~.150 average in May. Surely that wouldn't have been an improvement over any Twins catchers.
25. Gabriel Maciel, CF
Maciel seemed like an interesting prospect: plus fielding, plus speed, contact, and physical power that was untapped as of yet. Sadly, he never found that power, and stalled out in the Twins' organization after his numbers dropped post-COVID.

#26-30

26. Luke Raley, RF
In 2019, Raley was dealing with a serious injury, and I figured that meant that instead of being trade bait, he'd be our insurance against whoever we traded away (which turned out to be Lewin Diaz). He ended up getting traded before the 2020 season anyway as part of the Maeda trade in a return to the Dodgers (they'd drafted him and traded him away as part of the Dozier trade). He first found opportunity as a Ray in 2023, and is now a Mariner. He's been a plus offensively but not much of a defensive contributor.
27. Dashawn Keirsey, CF
Unlike Byron Buxton, LaMonte Wade, and (long after my original scouting reports) Royce Lewis, the Twins found a guy who already knew how to injure himself by running into an outfield wall. Despite a good start to his professional career, Keirsey was struggling with injuries in 2019, and there wasn't much to go on when I first checked him out. He ultimately slashed just .137/.245/.161 in 2019, and turned 24 early in the 2021 season, during which he hit .199 at A+. For most of the guys who were in that situation, that was the beginning of the end. For Keirsey, it was the beginning of a new beginning. (No, that didn't sound any better in my head.) His contact took a huge leap in 2022, slashing .271/.329/.395 in AA. He remained in AA for the majority of 2023, but his production took a leap again, and he found power, hitting .305 with 13 homers before his promotion to AAA. This year, he's slashing .302/.390/.539. Now, the caveat is that he's 27, which is why he's the last guy on the top 30 list, and wasn't taken in the Rule 5 draft. But it's been a journey, and it would be awesome to see him get a shot to continue the ascent in the majors.
28. Travis Blankenhorn, 3B
When I looked into Blankenhorn, he was on a potentially career-saving resurgence in AA after a couple of uninspiring years in lower levels, and it seemed too sustained to be a fluke. Then COVID happened. He did get his cup of coffee in 2020, going 1 of 3 for a double and HBP (what is with it with Twins getting HBP in their debuts?). But in 2021, he pinch ran for Donaldson in extras, scored the go-ahead run on a Buxton homer, and then committed an error in the bottom of the inning, which would lead to a loss. He was DFA'd two weeks later - with no other appearances for the Twins - and is now in the Nationals system. He's a big-time minors slugger, but seems unable to translate that to the big leagues.
29. Michael Helman, 2B
In 2019, Helman seemed like a no-true-outcomes defensive utility guy. It seems he's since figured out how to do a little of each - he's been average to above average in each category during his time in AAA across 2022-24, has hit around .260, and continues to play almost everywhere defensively. The rub, of course, is that he's now, 28. He provides great organizational depth, but he'll need an opportunity to show he can perform at the next level before we can slot him into any future plans.
30. Luis Rijo, RHP
Rijo had an incredible 2019 in A ball at age 20, and I was extremely bullish on him. But it seems he had a UCL injury in 2021, and sadly never returned to form. He's now playing back home in Venezuela, where it seems he had a decent winter.

Sleepers

These are guys I (and sometimes commenters) noticed while trawling through minor league stats, researching oddities or gaining context. There's also a couple guys who cracked the top 30 during the season, either via performance or acquisition, and some other acquisitions and debuts that were unranked but interesting.

Sleepers #1

Cole Sands, RHP (#26 in July 2019)
Sands was a 5th round pick in 2018, but had tendinitis and didn't play professional ball until 2019. He ascended quickly, starting in A ball and getting promoted to AA in time to make his last start of the year. Surprisingly, he was actually better than he'd been in college, and I liked him a lot at the time He continued to pitch well in AA in 2021, but struggled more in AAA and the majors in 2022, quickly earning the ire of fans. He was better in 2023 - solid in the majors, and dominant in AA - but his ERA is hurting again this year. The rate stats are actually better, though - walks were an issue and are way down, strikeouts are up, and his WHIP is down from 1.523 to 1.029. Without looking (it's late), that says to me he's allowing his baserunners in bunches. His FIP is 3.36, far better than previous seasons. 26 is still young, though; he's shown promise and the Twins seem fairly committed to him, and he's on pace to contribute more innings than he ever has before. Don't sleep on him.
Chris Vallimont, RHP (#30 in July 2019)
Vallimont was acquired at the deadline along with Sergio Romo for Lewin Diaz. Diaz was pretty well regarded for a non-top 30 guy, but he didn't work out in the majors, so this trade was a win pretty easily...but only because of Romo. Vallimont had a very good year in A and A+ in 2019, but struggled post-COVID and was DFA'd in 2022. He's had a couple bright spots since, including a cup of coffee with Baltimore last year, but I regret writing 4-5 paragraphs about him 5 years ago.

Sleepers #2

Devin Smeltzer, LHP
Smeltzer was not in the best place statistically when he was acquired in the Dozier trade, but he turned things around very quickly with great minors performances followed by a call-up when Michael Pineda was injured. Smeltzer was a childhood cancer survivor, which made him easy to root for. Lack of velo and an effective fourth pitch were the main questions with him at the time. In terms of ERA, good MLB seasons in 2019 and 2022 bookended negligible to bad contributions in 2020 and 2021, but the rate stats were never great - and worst in 2022 - and he was ultimately outrighted before electing FA. He's now in the Marlins system, currently AAA. His time here was a bit rocky, but it was better than the rest of Dozier's career.
Cody Stashak, RHP
Stashak steadily worked his way up through the minors, and was dominating AAA in 2019 before getting the call up. He was solid in 2019 and 2020, and it seemed like he might be a long-term guy for our pen, but his workload dropped in 2021 when he struggled, and a bounce back 2022 was cut short by a labrum tear. After being outrighted at the end of the season, Stashak elected FA, though he wouldn't sign until after his recovery. He struggled initially with the Giants in AAA last year, but his numbers have improved this year and hopefully he'll get back to the big leagues eventually.
Randy Dobnak, RHP
I don't think I need to tell anyone the ballad of Randy Dobnak, but I'm proud of myself for discovering him before he got his call. I was a little off here, though:
The big question: do we see him this year? Personally, I don't think so.
He started a playoff game...things have gone in the wrong direction for Dobnak since, but I think everyone would love to see him earn a call back up.
Edwar Colina, RHP
When I found him, Colina was three starts into a promotion at AAA and was a dominant flamethrower. I thought this guy was the next coming, and guessed he'd debut in 2020. He did, in fact, debut for the Twins late in the 2020 season, trying to hold a 9th-inning deficit at 2. Here are his career MLB numbers, to date: 0.1 IP 81.00 ERA 18.000 WHIP -0.2 WAR
Wander Valdez, 3B
Valdez was 19, in his third year in the organization, and was raking enough in rookie ball that I thought he was interesting, despite the impossibility of box scouting a guy playing at that level. I wasn't super optimistic, just tagging him as a person of interest - wait, what's this note?
if you want to be a top MLB prospect, being an infielder named Wander is a good start
uh yeah he didn't work out

Sleepers #3

Charlie Barnes, RHP
Barnes was a 4th round pick in 2017, but wasn't showing enough promise early in his career to crack the top 30. Despite a rough start in A+ in 2019, he pitched very well in AA. I liked him as a dark horse, future journeyman 4-5 spot guy, and he did start 8 games for the Twins in 2021 (one other appearance). He only had two or three good outings, but that's gratification enough for me. What's more, it looks like he's been the cornerstone of the Lotte Giants' rotation (KBO) since 2022!
Bailey Ober, RHP
A commenter who is no longer active suggested I check out Ober, who'd had some injury struggles early in his pro career as well as in college, and as a former 12th round pick, wasn't on the radar for 2019. If I didn't notice him, I should have. Ober was absurdly good in 2019. He's obviously been a hit; while the stats aren't there this year, we've seen him when he's on.

Sleepers #4

Ernie De La Trinidad, LF
The final part of the Escobar trade (after Duran and Maciel), E de la T was hot in 2018, but struggled in 2019. I stuck him on my list to watch in case he found his bat again, and because he had a good walk rate, but the lost 2020 year meant he was 25 in 2021, and he didn't do enough to stick in the organization.
Josh Winder, RHP
Winder seemed to me like a guy who could be consistently decent, if unspectacular. That's kind of been the case in his ~100 MLB innings, but he needs to improve his baseline a little, and right now he's in AAA working on returning from a shoulder injury. I just want him to work out so I can continue my to the Winders! to the Wallners! til the sweat drips off my ballners! joke.
Adam Bray, RHP
Bray was an older pitching prospect and MN native who had been very good in A+ in 2018, then again in AA and AAA in 2019. I thought he'd end up being one of those AAAA roster manipulation pitchers for a while, but it seems he had some kind of injury that led to the end of his pro career. Looks like he's now a pitching instructor at a local baseball camp.
Trey Cabbage, RF
Cabbage was a guy who'd struggled to impress in the low levels of the minors, but broke out to a degree in 2019 (his AAA numbers looked a lot better before August) with boosted power and better contact alongside defensive versatilty. His production did continue to improve after COVID - he hit 27 homers between A+ and AA - but at 24, it was the end of his time in the organization. He elected FA and chose the Angels organization, where he'd be left in AA all of 2022 despite an 1.098 OPS. In 2023, at age 26, he finally reached AAA and needed just 107 games to hit 30 home runs. It was enough to earn his first callup midsummer, which involved hitting an absolute nuke. He's now in the Astros organization. The MLB numbers aren't pretty in 70 PAs, but the minor league numbers alone make this a win for me.
Derek Molina, RHP
Primarily an infielder in his one year college, Molina was drafted to be a reliever by the Twins. For a 19 year old making a position change, he was surprisingly effective right away. He earned a call up to A+ at age 21 in 2019, and was dominating there up until one bad outing (after which he went on the IL, perhaps a factor) reduced his statline from "incredible" to "pretty good." Unfortunately, his play dropped off post-COVID - seemingly loss of command - and he never got out of A+.

Sleepers #5

Dakota Chalmers, RHP
A third round pick out of high school, Chalmers missed most of 2017 and 2018, which cost him the advantage of youth and led to the A's sending him to the Twins as part of a deal for Fernando Rodney. The surface level numbers were never great, but Chalmers was an elite strikeout guy who intermittently struggled with command. In 2019, he had a 12.5 K/9 but 6.0 BB/9. Sadly, he's another guy whose performance took a hit, and he was waived after a rough start to the year. After apparently being out of baseball in 2023, he's now in the Diamondbacks system.
Andrew Bechtold, 3B
Bechtold is another guy in the "older prospect with defensive versatility whose bat seems to be coming around" mold. In some categories, he was a post-COVID success story - for example, the power jumped up - but he struck out a lot and hit for a low average, not reaching AAA until age 26. He's now in the Blue Jays organization...apparently as a relief pitcher.

2024.06.04 15:12 Vegetable-Ear-9731 Why are movies flopping?

About a week ago I got into an argument with a Youtuber that you probably have never heard of about why movies are flopping at theaters. Something I suggested was a theory I have which is that the problem isn’t that people don’t want to go to movie theaters anymore, it’s that online influencers, specifically Youtubers, are really bad at promoting things and encouraging their audience to go see movies in theaters.
The Youtuber got really upset and made a lengthy post explaining why movies this year, like The Fall Guy and Furiosa, flopped, and how even if this Youtuber had dedicated themselves to convincing their audience to support Furiosa it still would have flopped for reasons outside of their control.
I think that outburst does more to prove my point than to actually argue against my claims. I guess when a Youtuber has 100k subscribers, regularly gets tens of thousands of views on their videos, and has a loyal audience that pays for their merchandise, they can say that they make Youtube lots of money and they provide a great deal for sponsors like BetterHelp. Yet, despite the size and loyalty of their audience, they can’t actually have any influence on the real world, and they absolutely can not possibly influence their audience to watch certain movies in theaters, because their audience is just too stubborn, too smart, and too poor.
It’s something that was pointed out about Hasan where he will claim that creators have a responsibility to control their audience when a creator’s audience is saying mean things about him, but that it is unreasonable to assume that he can control his audience when his audience is saying mean things about another creator.
What I’m saying is that it feels like a lot of creators want to claim they have a lot of influence on their audience when it’s beneficial to them, such as when they’re dealing with a sponsor, but when it’s detrimental to them, such as by having to deal with the stigma of having their audience watch a video and then decide to harass someone depicted negatively in the video, they have little-to-no influence on their audience.
So, what does this have to do with Furiosa flopping? Well, as I said, I think that Youtubers are genuinely pretty bad at promoting things that they like, but they are also earning money by claiming that they’re actually really good at selling things to their audience, and I feel like eventually sponsors are going to realize that.
Take a look at Youtube titles and thumbnails, for instance. With negative content the titles and thumbnails are easy to make, often just taking an unflattering frame (Velma for Disparu) to use to demonstrate that something is bad, and then having the title be “Velma is a terrible show,” and you can get very easy views from it. Whereas, what could you do for your video on why Andor is great? A picture of Andor smiling and the title “Andor is good, actually,” works if the general perception of Andor is that it’s a good show and people want to watch the video to get their opinions reaffirmed, but the initial reception of Andor was famously that it was boring and most of the Star Wars fans who watched it didn’t enjoy it. An Andor video that is positive would do well now, sure, but initially Andor videos weren’t doing well and Youtubers, including the EFAP crew, were actually complaining about how difficult it was for them to get their audience to understand that the show was good and commit to watching it.
What I’m saying is that it feels like Youtubers are mainly only good at promoting things that are easy to promote, and that the reason why they can earn a substantial amount of money is through the sheer numbers on Youtube. This means that if you have, say, 150k subscribers, it’s reasonable to assume that less than 1% of them would be willing to give you some money through Patreon, as well as 300 of them will buy your plushies on Makeship.
That’s cool, you might say, but people are very poor right now and dealing with the tough times due to inflation and stuff, you can’t expect people to just go to the cinema and spend $50 on tickets, snacks, and drinks, that would be absurd.
Well, if you look into the past you can see that hard economic times do tend to lead to large numbers of people showing up to see specific movies. Gone With The Wind, the most successful movie of all-time if you adjust for inflation, was released during The Great Depression. Avatar and The Dark Knight were released during a recession due to the Housing Market Crash in 2008/2009. No Way Home was released during the pandemic.
This is because during hard economic times people don’t want to be at home all day feeling miserable, they want to spend money on affordable luxuries to make themselves feel better. It’s why you’ll see a person like WingsOfRedemption who is supposedly struggling financially spending his payment for doing Keemstar’s lolcow podcast on a brand new truck that he admits that he barely even uses.
We also should consider that we did have two successful movies this year with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes and Dune: Part 2 grossing large amounts, albeit less than other franchise movies have grossed in previous years.
It feels as though the instincts of Youtubers when the movies they like are flopping are to make content about their failure because whether a movie succeeds or fails, they can still earn money talking about it. If The Fall Guy had earned $5 billion at the box office they could make a video on why it became the most successful movie of all-time, if had made $5 million they could make a video on why it was a complete failure, and if it had earned $300 million they could make a video on what that means in relation to the budget of the movie. So, whether any movie is a failure, a success, or even just earned back the money spent on it, they can make videos on it that are likely to be successful.
It’s the same with sponsors, I would imagine. When a Youtuber is personally invested with the success/failure of a product and/or company, like Oompaville, MrBeast, or Logan Paul, you can see them go hard on promoting the product, with Oompaville plugging his candy company on every video he makes and every podcast he appears on. But, with a channel like Papa Meat that presents BetterHelp as “I’m telling you to try this product because they paid me a lot of money,” you often won’t see the Youtuber even mention the product outside of the easily-skipped sponsored segment of whatever video the sponsor paid for.
So, is the solution to Youtubers being bad at promoting things unless they have a financial incentive for the product to do well to give them more money? Well, not really.
Last year we had a movie that initially flopped called Elemental. Youtubers did their thing where when the movie flopped they made their videos about their theories as to why the movie flopped, then they moved on and the rest of the world seemed to move on as well.
But, on Tumblr, people wanted the movie to succeed because a movie like Elemental succeeding would be good for them. They want animated movies, especially animated romance movies with a focus on shipping two characters together and empowering a woman to make her decisions, to succeed.
So, Tumblr went hard on promoting the movie, even though it was considered a flop. They made fanart, promoted fanart, encouraged fanart to be made, wrote blogs about how the movie was good and that people should see it. They did the legwork necessary to boost the numbers and encouraged people to go watch it, and eventually the movie reached the box office ticket sales necessary to be considered a financial success.
You could say that the success of the movie didn’t entirely come from Tumblr users, but it’s undeniable that they did considerably more work than Youtubers who would often only make one video saying “This movie is good, and stuff. Go see it.”
But, why did they do that work? I can’t speak for all of the Tumblr users, but I know one person said “I did it because if people like it, and there isn’t porn of it, they’ll pay me to make porn of it,” which is fair enough. Youtubers seemingly don’t care if Furiosa succeeds or fails, or even if Inside Out succeeds or fails, because they get paid regardless because if it succeeds they can make a video celebrating the success, if it fails it means that they can make a video about the failure.
So, I guess what I’m saying is that I have a question, which is what will happen when the people who sponsor Youtubers and pay for ads on Youtube realize that they can promote media and products better by paying memelords on Reddit and porn artists on Tumblr?
That wasn’t a rhetorical question, I’m being serious. Would companies like BetterHelp want to keep paying absurd amounts of money for an obviously insincere Youtuber like Chris Stuckmann or Papa Meat to advertise their service when they could spend much less and potentially get much more exposure and paying customers by paying an artist to create a BetterHelp porn comic, or even make a BetterHelp porn video? Heck, I remember a lot of my friends who frequently browse Reddit were convinced to see one of the Fast And Furious movies due to the “Family,” meme becoming popular on Reddit.
I guess what I’m saying is that I think that Youtubers need to put in more work towards promoting the things they like because it seems like most other big social media sites have users that are just better at promoting things and getting people excited about things, yet Youtubers are still getting paid a lot of money primarily due to their high view counts.
But, that can’t last forever because I feel like eventually those businesses are going to pay a number of other users to advertise their products on other sites and get some pretty accurate data as to what works and what doesn’t in terms of advertising. People on Youtube advertising Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One wasn’t as successful as people memeing on Oppenheimer and Barbie being released together in terms of how successful the movies were, and the year before we had the suit and tie meme for a Minions movie propelling it to being successful. It feels like Youtubers really need to step up their game because it’s embarrassing at this point.
Youtube used to dominate pop-culture, being able to turn little-known indie titles like Five Nights At Freddy’s, Amnesia, and Undertale into very dominant forces in pop-culture, and nowadays most Youtubers won’t even talk about something unless it’s already the most popular thing in the world. That’s fucking pathetic.
