Me (37 m) in Scotland had been dating a (35 f) for 3 months. Everything has been going well until I called her out on some suspicious behaviour (gaslighting,double standards,general abuse) . She decided she didn’t want to continue with the relationship. I accepted and decided to move on.
Now ever since she has done everything to destroy my dating life to move on and find someone else , including posting on Facebook (are we dating the same guy,) she has attempted this 5 times including my work. Luckily they have all been removed since my friends all reported her. she managed to get my hinge and bumble profiles blocked. She had called with no caller ID a bunch.
Unfortunately everything she has done it’s been anonymous, it may seem trivial.She has blocked me from everything. It’s so immature, why can’t she leave me alone?! Is there anything I can do?

2024.06.04 12:42 demun_tyme i’m going no contact with my ex who would verbally abuse me while drunk

i’m finally trying to let go of someone so toxic for me. it is hard because i remember the good times and the love we had for each other, but unfortunately i’m starting to realize i’m stuck in this toxic cycle. things will be good for a few weeks and then he’ll drink to the point where he blacks out. i’m always living in fear of the next time he’ll get drunk and leave me voicemails of him berating me. it has been getting worse now, to the point where he’ll tell me he has been cheating on me out of nowhere. he’ll call me a b*tch and that i’m whore when i did nothing to deserve that reaction. the reason he’ll just leave me voicemails is because i can tell when he gets drunk, i block the number now because i know what is coming. then when he’s sober it is the same thing too, that he will stop drinking and change. i’m tired of this. i’m tired of getting hurt and when he’s sober he is so nice and sweet, but i’m having a hard time understanding what happens with him. i’m starting to feel depressed and just overall bad about myself. i blocked him, but he can still call me on no caller ID. he is still drinking and drunk calling me leaving voicemails after i initiated no contact. i’m probably going to have to change my number. it is crazy to me because he said he’ll stop drinking for good the final time, but is back at it 24 hours later. i’m truly ready to just let him go and not live in fear anymore. wish me luck :(

2024.06.04 06:19 AggravatingWing5868 Left tonight. Currently being bombarded with emails, calls, voicemails, message requests, letters…..

Literally left tonight after 9 years of manipulation and serial cheating. I knew I HAD TO GO NO CONTACT THIS TIME. I immediately blocked him and just swallowed that part of me that feels so guilty for “hurting him”. Since 5 hours ago I’ve received over 100 no caller ID calls and lost track of the voicemails. Probably same amount. Thank God I can silence no caller ID. Now have seen him email me, message request me on Snapchat, he left a letter taped to my front door, started calling my work number. How do….and why do I actually feel like the bad guy. I so don’t want to hurt him. But I’m trying to gather what little self respect I have left to live a life aligned with my values. For all who have left YOU ARE SO STRONG WE ALL DESERVE BETTER. Oh and if it’s needed I’m a 27f, he’s a 38m.

2024.06.04 01:52 back2jakku My GF's dad abuses his daughter. He is getting a restraining order against me because I called police for a welfare check.

Update: My girlfriend just tried to take her own life by slitting her wrists. She's at the hospital now. I am going to tell her to file a restraining order. https://www.reddit.com/depression/comments/1d7o4gf/my_long_distance_girlfriend_attempted_suicide_by/
My GF (21y/o) of a year lives 2 hours from me. She got into her dream nursing program in my city and her parents don't want her to go. I am 23 y/o. Her parents are super old-school traditionalists.
She's left the house twice in the past month to stay with me to get a job and save money, and her parents are against it, physically blocking her from leaving. She told me to call the police if she wasn't outside, and I did. The police had to escort her out.
Afterwards, her dad used a picture of my license plate to find my address and came banging on my door demanding her to go back with him, even though she's an adult and she decided to leave. He came uninvited yelling at the top of his lungs and banging on my door 3 separate times in the middle of the day while all my housemates were home. I've been spammed with multiple unknown caller ID phone calls, and he even messaged me on LinkedIn and threatened to defame me to my co-workers. My GF said he's unapologetic and doesn't regret it at all. He is a really emotional and hot-headed man-child.
They emotionally and verbally abused her to the point where she returned to them 3 weeks ago. Since then, they've taken her phone, iPad, and computer, only allowing her to use a laptop sparingly from which she can finisher her classes. Other than that, she has no communication with the outside world. Her dad said that she's grounded for the entire summer and that finish demands payback for what she did. They take away the laptop every night and shut off the wifi sporadically when they suspect she's texting me. They don't even let her go on walks alone during the day. She is confined to the house constantly.
Yesterday, she decided that she wanted to see me, and so I called her an Uber. Once again, her parents physically blocked her from exiting and shut off the wifi. Because of this, I was tremendously worried and so I dialed the police for a welfare check.
My GF contacted me today saying that because I called the police a second time, for a welfare check, her parents are filing a restraining order against me. She will testify against them when they do.
What should I do? Do I file one before he does? I'm also moving out of the state to the other side of the country before the end of June, it doesn't make sense to me at all why he needs to escalate this.

2024.06.03 20:59 Pretend_Ad_7376 I feel like my (22F) boyfriend (21M) is being sneaky, how do we move past this?

For context, I (22F) and my boyfriend (21M) have been together on and off for three years. Recently, we were on a break for nine months and decided to rekindle things. The day after we decided to get back together, he asked me about something I had done while we weren’t together. I lied about it before admitting the truth. He asked if anyone had visited my house the previous week, and I told him no, even though someone did come over (nothing romantic happened; we just hung out and talked). He caught me in the lie, and even after I admitted it, he told me he never wanted to talk to me again. I was hurt but understood and gave him space.
Later, he reached out, and we decided to work on our relationship. We discussed our future and how to rebuild trust. I’ve been staying at his house for a few days at a time these past couple of weeks. When we decided to pursue our relationship, we agreed to remove everyone else we had dealings with during our break. I deleted and blocked all the guys I was talking to, which led to me receiving “no caller ID” calls. However, my boyfriend’s phone is faulty, so sometimes his calls come to my phone as “no caller ID” unintentionally.
The last time I received a “no caller ID” call, I texted him to ask if it was him instead of answering because we have a no-contact rule with people we previously dealt with, and I didn’t want to accidentally answer a blocked call. Initially, he was upset with me for not answering his call, but after I explained my reason, he understood.
However, this weekend when I spent the night, he received three “no caller ID” calls around midnight and told me about them the next day (he didn’t answer any of them). I asked who it could be, and he explained it was likely a girl he cut off and blocked who did not respect his boundaries. I understood this, as the same thing was happening to me. Curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to call him with “no caller ID” while he was at work to see if he would answer. He answered the call, and I stayed silent until he eventually hung up. I then called two more times a couple hours later with “no caller ID” to see if he’d answer again; he did not.
He then called me when he got off work and told me about the two “no caller ID” calls he received later in the evening, asking if it was me. He never mentioned the first call. This made me curious because why would he assume it was me unless he had talked to the girl in that span? He never brought up the first call I made, and when I asked to see his call log, the first call was not there. I admitted to making the calls and asked why he answered. He said he thought it was work-related, but that doesn’t make sense to me because why would he wait for me to speak instead of answering with “hello” like a normal call? His call log didn’t show any other work-related calls. I also asked why the first call wasn’t in the log (it looked like he deleted it); he said because the call failed. His phone is faulty, so calls do fail occasionally, but the likelihood of a call failing after 11 seconds of silence suggests he hung up. If he did receive a “no caller ID” work call that failed, why not mention it when I asked if he received any other “no caller ID” calls that day?
I feel like something is going on, and I don’t know what the next steps are because I feel like I can’t trust him. Should this be a deal breaker, because I feel like he’s being deceitful? If not, how do we build trust after these issues?

2024.06.03 14:45 Th30therUser The Search For Something Within

"There are demon haunted worlds, regions of utter darkness."
-Isa Upanishad
"To prepare for next semester, we will finish with theories on ideology." The overweight
man leaned heavily over the lectern. Tufts of hair jutted from his balding scalp. "The collective
conscience of us, from the very beginning. In its basic form, a theory of ideology is
construction." His voice came from his throat, a deep stirring. He scooted around the podium,
revealing himself. "The deconstruction of construction is ideology."
The professor took a big, sucking breath, flushing oxygen back into his overworked
lungs. "However, this is an introduction, so I will not overwhelm you. We will end with
something fun." Turning, streaks of sweat streamed down his back in collapsed waterfalls.
Suspender straps clung to his body in desperate straits. "A short film, together, we look closer.
Please pay attention."
His fingers clumsily worked the remote; bright buttons stood out upon its face, and our
eyes watched as he fumbled with the specter. Finally, the video appeared, and our eyes flew from
him to the screen. A tugboat sat still in the ocean, animated in a cartoonish style. A tall, blowing
smokestack tooted from a tug as it jumped merrily. A closer examination revealed live-action
minstrels working cheerfully ahead when disaster struck. Mevers wandered around the front of
the room, blocking the screen at times. He took substantial sucking breaths, followed by fits of
coughing. My eyes trailed him and his peculiar movements.
In a time of great stress, a crewmate clutches his chest in agony and writhes his way around the
deck. Panic strikes the crew, but none work together as a team. Instead, the deckhands are
ignorant of their situation.Mevers presses the red clicker at the moment of climax.
"Does anyone have any questions so far?" An audible groan formed as he started the
video back into motion.
A worker springs the release, and the anchor shoots up. The propeller begins its normal
twirl, pushing them forward and escaping to rescue; however, now the boat is speeding out of
control—all the crewmates combine in a hurricane of emotion, fighting for control of the
steering wheel. The video ends with the tug crashing into the shore. A dinky little tune churns
out as names sprawl down a black background.
"Ok, ok, ok, campers, let's chat. Who here…" Another sucking breath. "believes this has
anything to do with ideology?" Every hand shot up. "Promising. Can anyone tell me what the
anchor signifies?" Our hands went back down. Mevers pulled chalk from the cubby and
scribbled on the board.
"There were three crewmates onboard the ship. What did they signify?" There were a few
hands this time, but mine was not one of them. "Charlie, go ahead."
"The Id, Ego, and Superego." A pimply-faced boy squeaked out this answer.
"Excellent. The anchor signifies anxiety—the fundamental restriction..." For a moment,
he teetered—a white whale, the audience Ahab. Then he moved erratically to write once again.
"How do we best prepare our anchor?" His hand stopped as his words dissipated.
a man has something to find within
My eyes stayed on the words as the bell rang."I will see you all next semester." I remember Mevers well.
Construction
Three green lights faded to a soft yellow as I nudged my thumb. "Reactor level lowered."
An animatronic squelch blared through the loudspeakers. I nodded to the audit manager, who
tipped his cap and stepped back through the radiation shield. He moved briskly towards the
portal, never turning around. I raised my hand to flip three black levers in sequential order.
"Training protocol initiated." January fourteenth, a Shooters bikini calendar, bought as a
joke, reused since seventy-six, ran through my sightline. I stared a second longer than I should
have. My boots tapped across the metal grates as I returned to plant control. Blinking bulbs
flared in their familiar dance, a unique sequence of hypnotic lights running across my uniform. I
shimmied through the gap, sliding comfortably into my chair. Reactor nine supplied power to
station three. When time variance was outlawed, the name was changed, not much else. For a
while, people protested and requested audits. Slowly, they trickled to a crawl, and the occasional
crazy would run for it. I even had someone offer to buy my badge at the gate once. Thirty
thousand dollars. I smiled momentarily to slide past them.
"Training protocol 6789437 selected at random, per initiative RVL.765."
Men would be scrambling now, darting here and there. The screen poured in training
code. I cleared my throat, snapping out the microphone."Open leak in lower level." I scanned the code that ran overhead. Twelve-minute
countdown."
I had been a runner for twenty years, and running destroyed my knees, but now I sit in a
gel chair, which has ruined my gut.
A unique cipher I wrote to track data from the central core broke their code.
"Leak will occur between valve one-two-eight-nine-seven and one-two-eight-nine-eight.
Make it look real. Stop the leak at six minutes forty-six seconds, and perform all corrective
actions." The microphone snapped back into its holder as I let it go.
"Allie request a transfer. Cafeteria, east sector." I snuck my way back through the
aperture, successfully stopping myself from looking at the photo dangling from the wall. The
pod-like room opened through a radiation shield into a hall shaped like a knot on a tree, and my
portal sparked on.
I waited patiently.
"Message incoming. Countdown has begun; why are you requesting a transfer?" Her
soothing voice made the message much kinder than intended.
"Coffee." I waited for a response.
"Request granted." The portal came to life, and I stepped through. The cafeteria was
empty, just how I liked it. A mixture of tables and chairs filled the expansive room.
"Allie, turn on the news, please." I pulled a chair and grabbed another to rest my feet. In
the distance, the television lit up."Thought you were getting coffee?" An older man stood near the doorway, peering over
at me.
"I lie frequently." An advertisement for a new chip flavor blared into the room, and Allie
adjusted the volume lower.
"Have you been out of the room today? Allie, turn off the TV, please." He ran his hands
over his mouth as he spoke.
"No," I answered.
"They let more go." He spoke.
"Had to happen... eventually." Lawrence walked over and sat at the table across from me.
"What are you going to do?" He said.
"Keep coming in. One day, they'll let me go, but not today."
"Hope is a slippery slope." I glanced up at him; he sat there smiling at me—age lines
warped across his face—a 56-year-old man who appeared to be in his seventies.
"You pick up poetry?" I said.
"Six minutes." Lawrence shook his wrist, awakening the device required to be worn at all
times. They would come and collect it each year and then provide you with a new one. I had
ideas on why they did this. Lawrence dug his face into his hands, then ran his rash-covered
fingers through his hair.
"We were so close." He said."Yeah." A blush of air came out as I spoke.
"What are we going to do?" He responded. I propped my feet on a table and leaned
deeper into my chair.
"I don't know, Lawrence, Allie, can you turn on the TV, please? News station seven."
"You should get back." He looked at me curiously, expecting the proper response for an
audit.
"It's all good, programmed." The TV woke up with a news anchor shouting into the
camera.
Too much, too fast. We're speaking with striking workers outside of reactor nine, where
thousands are being laid off; a minor skirmish broke out earlier today when more employees left
the building during the second wave of firings. We estimate another two thousand joined the
amassing crowd.
"It's worse than I thought. Jesus." Lawrence lowered his head.
Power plant workers made up most of those laid-off, who run the aptly named 'stations'
producing the remaining oil reserves.
"Allie, turn off the tv, please." Lawrence stood and headed towards the portal, briefly
peering over his shoulder. "3 minutes."
"Just enough time to let it go." Our eyes met."We had a good run. 26 years, we lasted. Time moves faster, doesn't it?" He lowered his
head.
"It's jogging now." Lawrence nodded at this, then disappeared through the door. As good
a goodbye as any.
"Allie, turn on the tv, please."
People are discussing how a 'station' has never been closed. What happens when you turn off the
machine? With Neuma stock plummeting today, we will soon find out. Back to you, Jenna.
The first siren came, followed by the radiation alarm.
"Call incoming." Allie clicked it through while droning out the alarms.
"Hey, we're not seeing that leak. Are you sure you read it, right?" The technician would
be at the reactor panel, diligently searching for something that wouldn't appear.
"They're running debug errors. I started the search as soon as the first alarm rang. The
leak won't show on the panel due to simulated interlock failures." Deeper still into the mesh.
"Alright." His voice cracked.
"Are we on schedule?" I responded.
"A little behind; we weren't sure what was happening." I could hear him shouting at
something away from the mic before returning. "I think we can finish in under 8 minutes still.""Give me an exact." I said.
"7 minutes 18 seconds." I punched this into my watch.
"You're on the clock." Allie ended the call and switched the volume back on.
First introduced thirty years ago, stations were one of the technological bursts of the early
seventies. They were rapid aging chambers powered by nuclear reactors. With oil reserves
waning, this invention changed the course of humanity; now, as the path forks again, scientists
sound the alarm on shutting one of these super generators down.
"Allie, detach the television from the wall; have it traced, please."
"Sir, Security protocols are set." I looked down at my watch, which was clicking off
seconds a minutiae more than what seemed normal. Four minutes, thirty seconds.
"Very well, could you make some popcorn, please?" Jenna Stone, the blonde anchor,
threw it to a commercial teasing the continuation of the story in just a moment. An advertisement
for the newest replacement flashed onto the screen.
"Popcorn's ready, sir."
"Thank you, Allie." I stood and walked over to the heater; a warm bag awaited me, and I
snapped it open to toss a few in my mouth. The grease coated my fingers, and I sucked at them
hungrily. The condemned's last meal. Two minutes twenty seconds.A special episode of The Morning Dossier here at reactor nine, where we have all the updates all
day long. Sarah, are you saying that drills are happening within the plant? Can you give us an
idea of what that means?
One minute, thirteen seconds.
Yes, Jenna, we have confirmed reports that shutdown drills are ongoing. The communications
team has stated that these drills are regulatory and standard.
Time's up. I waited for the ring, but none came. I threw the bag in the trash and walked
back toward the portal. "Allie, detach the TV from the wall and have it follow."
"Sir, Security protocols are set. Call incoming. Patching."
"Nothing's happening. The alarm is still going off! What's going on up there!?" Once
again, the angry technician.
"They're shifting the leak. The power in the plant is dangerously low. Remove security
protocols, shift the plant into ultra-dark." A professional sounds calm and relaxed, when killing
himself.
"Are you serious?"
"Would you prefer a reactor fault?" He waited before responding to this delicate question.
"Do they think this will happen?" The strain in his voice told me all I needed to know.
"It's just training. Hurry up." I waited for the announcement. Would they patch me again?
Asking more questions raise more red flags. The call did not come."Security protocols deactivated. Plant entering ultra-dark." A soothing sound.
"Allie, detach the TV, please." The lights in the building shut off as the television's
robotic arm extended out and turned on its motion fan. It floated through the air, catching up and
equalizing sound as it flew. My watch lit up in a fulgent glare—the backup method of securing
power for humanity.
"Allie, transfer me to station 3."
"Sir, that area is restricted."
"Are security protocols active?"
"Security protocols are deactivated." Her voice was monotonous.
"Then transfer me." The portal door opened; and the television trailed behind.
Deconstruction
Mevers still speaks to me.
Multiple whistleblowers are filing class-action lawsuits against the Neuma corporation as we
speak. Some accusations include fraud and illegal time variance, a practice outlawed nearly
seven years ago.
"Call incoming, Sir." Allie spoke.
Desperation is a trait of the unprepared. Mevers still speaks to me."Please block all callers, Allie."
Chaos happens naturally—no need to influence.
"Calls are blocked, Sir."
There is a significant update here from reactor nine: Individuals are streaming from the exits,
but guards are turning them back! Armed guards have stopped the workers from leaving the
premises!
The room's domed ceiling stood as if in repose. The walls were white, all made to look
the same. If only Michelangelo could get ahold of them.
At the center of the observatory sat a large vat.
"Allie, disengage the chamber locks."
"Access denied." There is a hidden viciousness in a response.
"Allie, security protocols are disabled. Disengage chamber locks." I returned.
"Access denied." The monotony was unappealing.
"Allie, who has access to disengage chamber locks?"
"Redacted." A once soothing voice turning sour. "Redacted. Redacted. Redacted.
Redacted."
"Allie, stop. Who has access to Station 3?"
"Redacted. Redacted. Redacted." Faster and faster, she spat out the curse.We are making plans for what we cannot keep.
We're not going to commercial; we promise to keep you locked on to the action. Ted, can you
give us some insight into what is going on behind the doors of reactor nine?
Sarah handed the microphone to a balding man. His eyes bulged from his head as if his
brain was too large.
I was only at the plant a few years, but secrets live in the walls, as is often said. Room upon room
blocked from transfer—portals leading out of the plant. Nothing seems to get done, no matter
how many complaints get lodged. They love to play these games, what you're seeing now, Sarah.
No one knows what they're doing!
His voice raced out like gunshots—a scare tactic improvised by oligarchs.
I inspected the knobs that held the vat shut. Steel bolts crocheted into a massive strike
plate. "I suppose I will need a hammer, Allie." I stared at the twisting waves as she materialized
the wooden piece. Dark Energy sloshed back and forth like water in the container. A large,
sealed tub. One of the few to know it even existed—the hard road. As I smashed the sledge into
the lock, a bell rang off.
Knock!
The crack of my hammer poured into the small room as a bolt fell; heat drenched the
room as I dragged the hammer behind me.Breaking news at reactor nine. Guards are pushing workers back inside the building. We cannot
determine what is coming from the loudspeakers, but the workers are being forced back inside
the building.
"Allie, are you recording?"
"Recording, Sir." Time spun wildly.
"I looked for so long."
I raised the hammer and began to work once again. Another bolt fell, and I could feel
flame licking at the growing opening. The professor's words crept through my mind as I dragged
the hammer to the last lock.
"Nothing to find."
Knock
"Nothing within."
Knock
The last bolt hung by a thread. Waves of heat washed over my skin. With the last of my
strength, I brought the hammer through. With a clean strike, the bolt shattered, the hammer
exploded, and the door opened.
Boiling puddy flared. Droplets of ooze slid over the sides of the cage as it depressurized.
I climbed onto the side, watching life."Goodbye, Sir." Allie turned off her recording.
Warm waves welcomed me, and I sank below.

2024.06.03 12:02 Plankton_Etn ETN-SC CLIENT Getting Started

# Introduction

This page explains how to set up ETN-SC and execute some basic tasks using the command line tools. In order to use ETN-SC, the software must first be installed. There are several ways ETN-SC can be installed depending on the operating system and the user's choice of installation method, for example using a package manager, container or building from source. Instructions for installing ETN-SC can be found on the ["Install and Build"](https://developer.electroneum.com/etn-sc-client/getting-started/instaling-etn-sc) pages.

The tutorial on this page assumes ETN-SC client have been installed successfully and that a firewall has been configured to block external traffic to the JSON-RPC port 8545, see [Security](https://developer.electroneum.com/etn-sc-client/fundamentals/sync-modes).

This page provides step-by-step instructions covering the fundamentals of using ETN-SC client. This includes generating accounts, joining the Electroneum network, syncing the blockchain and sending ETN between accounts. This tutorial uses [Clef](https://developer.electroneum.com/etn-sc-client/tools/clef). Clef is an account management tool external to ETN-SC itself that allows users to sign transactions. It is developed by the Geth team and maintained by the Electroneum team.

##

Prerequisites

In order to get the most value from the tutorials on this page, the following skills are necessary:

* Experience using the command line

* Basic knowledge about Ethereum, Electroneum Smart Chain and testnets

* Basic knowledge about HTTP and JavaScript

* Basic knowledge of node architecture

Users that need to revisit these fundamentals can find helpful resources relating to the command line [here](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/Tools_and_testing/Understanding_client-side_tools/Command_line), Electroneum and its testnets [here](https://developer.electroneum.com/foundational-topics/networks), http [here](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP) and Javascript [here](https://www.javascript.com/learn).

If ETN-SC was installed from source on Linux, make saves the binaries for ETN-SC and the associated tools in /build/bin. To run these programs it is convenient to move them to the top level project directory (e.g. running mv ./build/bin/* ./) from /electroneum-sc. Then ./ must be prepended to the commands in the code snippets in order to execute a particular program, e.g. ./etn-sc instead of simply etn-sc. If the executables are not moved then either navigate to the bin directory to run them (e.g. cd ./build/bin and ./etn-sc) or provide their path (e.g. ./build/bin/etn-sc). These instructions can be ignored for other installations.

##

Background

ETN-SC is an Electroneum Smart Chain client written in Go. This means running ETN-SC turns a computer into an Electroneum node. Electroneum is a peer-to-peer network where information is shared directly between nodes rather than being managed by a central server. Every 5 seconds one validator node is selected to generate a new block containing a list of transactions that nodes receiving the block should execute. This "block proposer" node sends the new block to its peers. On receiving a new block, each node checks that it is valid and adds it to their database. The sequence of discrete blocks is called a "blockchain".

The information provided in each block is used by ETN-SC to update its "state" - the ETN balance of each account on Electroneum and the data stored by each smart contract. There are two types of account: externally-owned accounts (EOAs) and contract accounts. Contract accounts execute contract code when they receive transactions. EOAs are accounts that users manage locally in order to sign and submit transactions. Each EOA is a public-private key pair, where the public key is used to derive a unique address for the user and the private key is used to protect the account and securely sign messages. Therefore, in order to use Electroneum Smart Chain, it is first necessary to generate an EOA (hereafter, "account"). This tutorial will guide the user through creating an account, funding it with ETN and sending some to another address.

###

Step 1: Generating accounts

There are several methods for generating accounts in ETN-SC. This tutorial demonstrates how to generate accounts using Clef, as this is considered best practice, largely because it decouples the users' key management from ETN-SC, making it more modular and flexible. It can also be run from secure USB sticks or virtual machines, offering security benefits. For convenience, this tutorial will execute Clef on the same computer that will also run ETN-SC, although more secure options are available (see [here](https://developer.electroneum.com/etn-sc-client/tools/clef/setup)).

An account is a pair of keys (public and private). Clef needs to know where to save these keys to so that they can be retrieved later. This information is passed to Clef as an argument. This is achieved using the following command:

Copy

```
clef newaccount --keystore etn-sc-tutorial/keystore
```

The specific function from Clef that generates new accounts is newaccount and it accepts a parameter, --keystore, that tells it where to store the newly generated keys. In this example the keystore location is a new directory that will be created automatically: etn-sc-tutorial/keystore. Clef will return the following result in the terminal:

Copy

```
WARNING!
Clef is an account management tool. It may, like any software, contain bugs.
Please take care to
- backup your keystore files,
- verify that the keystore(s) can be opened with your password.
Clef is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY
without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
PURPOSE. See the GNU General Public License for more details.
Enter 'ok' to proceed:
>
```

This is important information. The etn-sc-tutorial/keystore directory will soon contain a secret key that can be used to access any funds held in the new account. If it is compromised, the funds can be stolen. If it is lost, there is no way to retrieve the funds. This tutorial will only use dummy funds with no real world value, but when these steps are repeated on Electroneum mainnet is critical that the keystore is kept secure and backed up.

Typing ok into the terminal and pressing enter causes Clef to prompt for a password. Clef requires a password that is at least 10 characters long, and best practice would be to use a combination of numbers, characters and special characters. Entering a suitable password and pressing enter returns the following result to the terminal:

Copy

```
-----------------------
```

It is important to save the account address and the password somewhere secure. They will be used again later in this tutorial. Please note that the account address shown in the code snippets above and later in this tutorials are examples - those generated by followers of this tutorial will be different. The account generated above can be used as the main account throughout the remainder of this tutorial. However in order to demonstrate transactions between accounts it is also necessary to have a second account. A second account can be added to the same keystore by precisely repeating the previous steps, providing the same password.

###

Step 2: Start Clef

The previous commands used Clef's newaccount function to add new key pairs to the keystore. Clef uses the private key(s) saved in the keystore to sign transactions. In order to do this, Clef needs to be started and left running while ETN-SC is running simultaneously, so that the two programs can communicate between one another.

To start Clef, run the Clef executable passing as arguments the keystore file location, config directory location and a chain ID. The config directory was automatically created inside the etn-sc-tutorial directory during the previous step. The [chain ID](https://chainlist.org/) is an integer that defines which EVM compatible network to connect to. Electroneum Smart Chain mainnet has **chain ID 52014**. In this tutorial Chain ID **5201420** is used which is that of the Electroneum Smart Chain testnet. It is very important that this chain ID parameter is set to 5201420 - Clef uses the chain ID to sign messages so it must be correct. The following command starts Clef on Electroneum Smart Chain testnet:

Copy

```
clef --keystore etn-sc-tutorial/keystore --configdir etn-sc-tutorial/clef --chainid 5201420
```

After running the command above, Clef requests the user to type “ok” to proceed. On typing "ok" and pressing enter, Clef returns the following to the terminal:

Copy

```
```

This result indicates that Clef is running. This terminal should be left running for the duration of this tutorial. If the tutorial is stopped and restarted later Clef must also be restarted by running the previous command.

###

Step 3: Start ETN-SC

Etn-sc is the Electroneum Smart Chain client that will connect the computer to the Electroneum network. In this tutorial the network is the Electroneum Smart Chain testnet. Testnets are used to test Electroneum client software and smart contracts in an environment where no real-world value is at risk. To start Etn-sc, run the Etn-sc executable file passing argument that define the data directory (where Etn-sc should save blockchain data), signer (points Etn-sc to Clef), the network ID and the sync mode. For this tutorial, snap sync is recommended. The final argument passed to Etn-sc is the --http flag. This enables the http-rpc server that allows external programs to interact with Etn-sc by sending it http requests. By default the http server is only exposed locally using port 8545: localhost:8545.

The following command should be run in a new terminal, separate to the one running Clef:

Copy

```
etn-sc --testnet --datadir etn-sc-tutorial --http --http.api eth,net --signer=etn-sc-tutorial/clef/clef.ipc --http
```

Running the above command starts Etn-sc.

By default, Etn-sc uses snap-sync which download blocks sequentially from a relatively recent block, not the genesis block. It saves the data in files in /electroneum-sc/etn-sc-tutorial/etn-sc/chaindata/. Once the sequence of headers has been verified, Etn-sc downloads the block bodies and state data before starting the "state healing" phase to update the state for newly arriving data. This is confirmed by the logs printed to the terminal. There should be a rapidly-growing sequence of logs in the terminal with the following syntax:

Copy

```
INFO [04-29][15:54:09.238] Looking for peers peercount=2 tried=0 static=0
INFO [04-29][15:54:19.393] Imported new block headers count=2 elapsed=1.127ms number=996288 hash=09f1e3..718c47 age=13h9m5s
INFO [04-29][15:54:19:656] Imported new block receipts count=698 elapsed=4.464ms number=994566 hash=56dc44..007c93 age=13h9m9s
```

This message will be displayed periodically until state healing has finished:

Copy

```
INFO [10-2020:20:09.510] State heal in progress accounts=313,309@17.95MiB slots=363,525@28.77MiB codes=7222@50.73MiB nodes=49,616,912@12.67GiB pending=29805
```

When state healing is finished, the node is in sync and ready to use.

Sending an empty Curl request to the http server provides a quick way to confirm that this too has been started without any issues. In a third terminal, the following command can be run:

Copy

```
curl http://localhost:8545
```

If there is no error message reported to the terminal, everything is OK. Etn-sc must be running and synced in order for a user to interact with the Electroneum network. If the terminal running Etn-sc is closed down then Etn-sc must be restarted again in a new terminal. Etn-sc can be started and stopped easily, but it must be running for any interaction with Electroneum to take place. To shut down Etn-sc, simply press CTRL+C in the Etn-sc terminal. To start it again, run the previous command etn-sc --datadir .

###

Step 4: Get Testnet ETN

In order to make some transactions, the user must fund their account with ETN. On the Electroneum mainnet, ETN can only be obtained in three ways:

  1. by receiving it as a reward for validating blocks;

  1. receiving it in a transfer from another Electroneum user or contract;

  1. receiving it from an exchange

On Electroneum testnets, the ETN has no real world value so it can be made freely available via faucets. Faucets allow users to request a transfer of testnet ETN to their account.

The testnet faucet is yet to be rolled out to the public.

###

Step 5: Interact with Etn-sc

For interacting with the blockchain, Etn-sc provides JSON-RPC APIs. [JSON-RPC](https://developer.electroneum.com/electroneum-stack/electroneum-client-apis/json-rpc) is a way to execute specific tasks by sending instructions to Etn-sc in the form of [JSON](https://www.json.org/json-en.html) objects. RPC stands for "Remote Procedure Call" and it refers to the ability to send these JSON-encoded instructions from locations outside of those managed by Etn-sc. It is possible to interact with Etn-sc by sending these JSON encoded instructions directly over Etn-sc's exposed http port using tools like Curl. However, this is somewhat user-unfriendly and error-prone, especially for more complex instructions. For this reason, there are a set of libraries built on top of JSON-RPC that provide a more user-friendly interface for interacting with Etn-sc. One of the most widely used is Web3.js.

Etn-sc provides a Javascript console that exposes the Web3.js API. This means that with Etn-sc running in one terminal, a Javascript environment can be opened in another allowing the user to interact with Etn-sc using Web3.js. There are three transport protocols that can be used to connect the Javascript environment to Etn-sc:

* IPC (Inter-Process Communication): Provides unrestricted access to all APIs, but only works when the console is run on the same host as the etn-sc node.

* HTTP: By default provides access to the eth, web3 and net method namespaces.

* Websocket: By default provides access to the eth, web3 and net method namespaces.

This tutorial will use the HTTP option. Note that the terminals running Etn-sc and Clef should both still be active. In a new (third) terminal, the following command can be run to start the console and connect it to Etn-sc using the exposed http port:

Copy

```
etn-sc attach http://127.0.0.1:8545
```

This command causes the terminal to hang because it is waiting for approval from Clef. Approving the request in the terminal running Clef will lead to the following welcome message being displayed in the Javascript console:

Copy

```
Welcome to the Etn-sc JavaScript console!
instance: etn-sc/v5.0.0-stable/darwin-amd64/go1.17.5
at block: 6354736 (Thu Feb 10 2022 14:01:46 GMT+0100 (WAT))
modules: eth:1.0 net:1.0 rpc:1.0 web3:1.0
To exit, press ctrl-d or type exit
```

The console is now active and connected to Etn-sc. It can now be used to interact with the Electroneum (testnet) network.

####

List of accounts

In this tutorial, the accounts are managed using Clef. This means that requesting information about the accounts requires explicit approval in Clef, which should still be running in its own terminal. Earlier in this tutorial, two accounts were created using Clef. The following command will display the addresses of those two accounts and any others that might have been added to the keystore before or since.

Copy

```
eth.accounts;
```

The console will hang, because Clef is waiting for approval. The following message will be displayed in the Clef terminal:

Copy

```
```

Entering "y" approves the request from the console. In the terminal running the Javascript console, the account addresses are now displayed:

Copy

```
["0xca57f3b40b42fcce3c37b8d18adbca5260ca72ec", "0xce8dba5e4157c2b284d8853afeeea259344c1653"]
```

It is also possible for this request to time out if the Clef approval took too long - in this case simply repeat the request and approval. Accounts can also be listed directly from Clef by opening a new terminal and running clef list-accounts --keystore .

####

Checking account balance.

Having confirmed that the two addresses created earlier are indeed in the keystore and accessible through the Javascript console, it is possible to retrieve information about how much ETN they own. The testnet faucet should have sent 5 ETN to the address provided, meaning that the balance of one of the accounts should be at least 5 ETN and the other should be 0. There are other faucets available that may dispense more ETN per request, and multiple requests can be made to accumulate more ETN. The following command displays the account balance in the console:

Copy

```
web3.fromWei(eth.getBalance('0xca57F3b40B42FCce3c37B8D18aDBca5260ca72EC'), 'ether');
```

There are actually two instructions sent in the above command. The inner one is the getBalance function from the eth namespace. This takes the account address as its only argument. By default, this returns the account balance in units of Wei. There are 1e-18 Wei to one ETN. To present the result in units of ETN, getBalance is wrapped in the fromWei function from the web3 namespace. Running this command should provide the following result, assuming the account balance is 1 ETN:

Copy

```
1
```

Repeating the command for the other (empty) account should yield:

Copy

```
0
```

####

Send ETN to another account

The command eth.sendTransaction can be used to send some ETN from one address to another. This command takes three arguments: from, to and value. These define the sender and recipient addresses (as strings) and the amount of Wei to transfer. It is far less error prone to enter the transaction value in units of ETN rather than Wei, so the value field can take the return value from the toWei function. The following command, run in the Javascript console, sends 0.1 ETN from one of the accounts in the Clef keystore to the other.

Note that the addresses here are examples - the user must replace the address in the from field with the address currently owning 1 ETN, and the address in the to field with the address currently holding 0 ETN.

Copy

```
eth.sendTransaction({
from: '0xca57f3b40b42fcce3c37b8d18adbca5260ca72ec',
to: '0xce8dba5e4157c2b284d8853afeeea259344c1653',
value: web3.toWei(0.1, 'ether')
});
```

Note that submitting this transaction requires approval in Clef. In the Clef terminal, Clef will prompt for approval and request the account password. If the password is correctly entered, Etn-sc proceeds with the transaction. The transaction request summary is presented by Clef in the Clef terminal. This is an opportunity for the sender to review the details and ensure they are correct.

Copy

```
After approving the transaction, the following confirmation screen in displayed in the Clef terminal:
Copy
```

```
In the Javascript console, the transaction hash is displayed. This will be used in the next section to retrieve the transaction details.
Copy
```

```
It is also advised to check the account balances using Etn-sc by repeating the instructions from earlier. At this point in the tutorial, the balances of the two accounts in the Clef keystore should have changed by ~0.1 ETN (the sender's balance will have decremented by a little over 0.1 ETN because some small was amount paid in transaction gas).
####
Checking the transaction hash
The transaction hash is a unique identifier for this specific transaction that can be used later to retrieve the transaction details. The same information can also be retrieved directly from the Etn-sc node. The hash returned in the previous step can be provided as an argument to eth.getTransaction to return the transaction information:
Copy
```
eth.getTransaction('0x99d489d0bd984915fd370b307c2d39320860950666aac3f261921113ae4f95bb');
```
This returns the following response (although the actual values for each field will vary because they are specific to each transaction):
Copy
```

###

Using Curl

Up to this point this tutorial has interacted with Etn-sc using the convenience library Web3.js. This library enables the user to send instructions to Etn-sc using a more user-friendly interface compared to sending raw JSON objects. However, it is also possible for the user to send these JSON objects directly to Etn-sc's exposed HTTP port. Curl is a command line tool that sends HTTP requests. This part of the tutorial demonstrates how to check account balances and send a transaction using Curl.

####

Checking account balance

The command below returns the balance of the given account. This is a HTTP POST request to the local port 8545. The `-H` flag is for header information. It is used here to define the format of the incoming payload, which is JSON. The `--data` flag defines the content of the payload, which is a JSON object. That JSON object contains four fields: `jsonrpc` defines the spec version for the JSON-RPC API, `method` is the specific function being invoked, `params` are the function arguments, and `id` is used for ordering transactions. The two arguments passed to `eth_getBalance` are the account address whose balance to check and the block to query (here latest is used to check the balance in the most recently mined block).

Copy

```
curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:8545 \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
--data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0", "method":"eth_getBalance", "params":["0xca57f3b40b42fcce3c37b8d18adbca5260ca72ec","latest"], "id":1}'
```

A successful call will return a response like the one below:

Copy

```
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"result":"0xc7d54951f87f7c0"}
```

The balance is in the result field in the returned JSON object. However, it is denominated in Wei and presented as a hexadecimal string. There are many options for converting this value to a decimal in units of ETN, for example by opening a Python console and running:

Copy

```
0xc7d54951f87f7c0 / 1e18
```

This returns the balance in ETN:

Copy

```
0.8999684999998321
```

####

Checking the account list

The curl command below returns the list of all accounts.

Copy

```
curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:8545 \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
--data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0", "method":"eth_accounts","params":[], "id":1}'
```

This requires approval in Clef. Once approved, the following information is returned to the terminal:

Copy

```
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"result":["0xca57f3b40b42fcce3c37b8d18adbca5260ca72ec"]}
```

####

Sending Transactions

Sending a transaction between accounts can also be achieved using Curl. Notice that the value of the transaction is a hexadecimal string in units of Wei. To transfer 0.1 ETN, it is first necessary to convert this to Wei by multiplying by 10^18 then converting to hex. 0.1 ETN is "0x16345785d8a0000" in hex. As before, update the to and from fields with the addresses in the Clef keystore.

Copy

```
curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:8545 \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
--data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0", "method":"eth_sendTransaction", "params":[{"from": "0xca57f3b40b42fcce3c37b8d18adbca5260ca72ec","to": "0xce8dba5e4157c2b284d8853afeeea259344c1653","value": "0x16345785d8a0000"}], "id":1}'
```

This requires approval in Clef. Once the password for the sender account has been provided, Clef will return a summary of the transaction details and the terminal that made the Curl request will display a response containing the transaction hash.

Copy

```
{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":5,"result":"0xac8b347d70a82805edb85fc136fc2c4e77d31677c2f9e4e7950e0342f0dc7e7c"}
```

Summary

This tutorial has demonstrated how to generate accounts using Clef, fund them with testnet ETN and use those accounts to interact with the Electroneum Smart Chain (testnet) through the Etn-sc node. Checking account balances, sending transactions and retrieving transaction details were explained using the web3.js library via the Etn-sc console and using the JSON-RPC directly using Curl. For more detailed information about Clef, please see [the Clef docs](https://developer.electroneum.com/etn-sc-client/tools/clef).

2024.06.02 16:07 The_Newromancer I wish I never went to the bathroom...

It has been over a week since I last left the apartment. I was meant to return to work the other day, but have been avoiding my boss’ calls. She’s out there now, watching me. I can see her through the window. She’ll leave soon, but then she’ll be back tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then the day after that. Same time. Same place. Always watching.
It started in the bathroom of a McDonald’s just down the road from where I work. It had been a long shift and I had to stay behind two hours as a coworker called in sick. My legs were tired from standing all day and my eyes were drooping from exhaustion.
I washed my hands at the sink. The mirror reflected my awful features. Bags under the eyes. Acne scarring on my face. I felt icky.
“What are you doing here?”
A woman called from behind me. I flicked my hands in the sink to quickly dry them as I turned to face her.
“Excuse me,” she continued, “What are you doing in here?”
In front of me was a 40 something year old woman. Blonde hair and wearing sunglasses indoors. She looked furious.
“Just washing my hands,” I said.
“You’re a man,” she said.
“I’m not…”
“What are you doing in the female bathroom you freak?” she raised her voice over mine.
“I’m just using the toilet...”
The woman pulled out her phone and, presumably, started recording me, “This pervert is in the ladies bathroom checking on women.”
I lifted my hand up to block my face from the camera and walked brusquely out into the restaurant. I could hear the woman’s heavy footfalls trail behind me.
“Look at this groomer walking off now he’s been called out,” she said.
I walked up to the front counter. No doubt she was there too. A member of staff was standing there putting an order together.
“Hey,” I leaned over, “Can you stop her?”
“Oh yeah! Call the cops! We’ll see what they have to say when they arrive!” she said behind me.
“Sorry ma’am?” the staff member said, “What’s going on here?”
“I don’t know,” I said, “I’m just trying to use the bathroom and she’s harassing me.”
“Go on! Call them! They’ll kick this freak out!”
“Ma’am,” the worker said to her, “I’m going to have to ask you to stop or leave.”
“Stop what?” she said, “I’m just calling out this pedophile so they’ll stop creeping on little girls!”
The worker sighed, “I’ll just call the cops.”
“Yeah, they’ll get this sicko out of here!” she said.
I sighed, “You know what, I’ll just go.”
“Are you sure, ma’am?” the worker said.
“Ma’am?” the woman said, “That’s a dude!”
“Yeah, I just needed the toilet anyway,” I said, “I don’t want to make a fuss.”
“Run away!” she said, “Run away like the freak you are!”
Apart from the shouting woman, the place was completely silent as every bystander watched the situation unfold. I pulled my hoodie over my head and walked out the building as fast as I could. She followed.
I walked across the McDonald’s parking lot over to the supermarket next to me where I parked my car. The entire time, the heckler followed me, her phone still up and recording. I tried to ignore her as she kept screaming absurd shit over and over.
It didn’t take long to make it back to the car. I jumped in and locked the door. The woman pulled the handle as soon as it clicked. Luckily, she was too slow. My hands choked the wheel as the adrenaline started to fade. I didn’t realize how fast my heart was beating until it began to slow. She stood outside the window still filming and shouting her obscenities as I got control of my breathing.
After a minute, I started the car and reversed out of the space. She followed still recording from the window. Once on the road, I put it into drive and sped out of the parking lot. I saw her standing in the rear view mirror, phone in hand. Still screaming.
A day later, the experience still left a mark on me. I dreamed about it overnight. Her face was vivid in my mind. All day I was filled with regret that I didn’t let the police take care of it and hopefully get the woman taken away. Everything I didn’t say to her floated in my head.
I noticed it first when I took my dog out for a walk. A banged up blue Chevrolet. Must have been from the 70s. The paint was peeling, replaced with rust. I didn’t get a good look in from across the street. The glare from the sun was too strong. But it left an impression on me. I’d never seen a vehicle so distinct on this street before.
Throughout the day, I kept looking out the window. The car was still there. Down the road. I couldn’t make out any features from the distance, but there was someone sitting in the driver’s seat. It was freaking me out. I closed all the blinds in my apartment and tried to put it out of my mind for the time being.
I was working the next day. It was at a cafe franchise in the same complex as the McDonald’s. Most of my shift was spent making coffee and wiping down tables. The same old shit every day. Customers ranged from okay to horrible. I was just happy to get a paycheck.
We closed later than most cafes at around 10pm, though we were usually out of there by 10:45pm. I noticed it when mopping the front of house. It wasn’t so easy to see in the dark of night, but there was a blue Chevrolet—same model, same rusted coat—in the parking lot just outside the store. Again, I couldn’t see the person sitting in the driver’s seat, so I wandered out back and checked the cameras. Also not good enough, even when zoomed in.
My coworker kept asking if I was okay. Even though he tried to hide it, he was clearly annoyed that I was slowing down the close for no reason. I got on with mopping, but kept my eye on the parking lot. By the time we got out, the car was gone.
It was back outside the apartment the next day. The car would arrive at around 10am and leave at 9pm. A few times throughout the day, it would leave and then come back an hour or so later. I could see the person sitting there for hours and hours. But I didn’t want to confront them out of fear of what they might do.
When I went in for my next shift, my coworkers were all staring at me. I greeted them with a good afternoon, but everyone returned it with a harsh glare. As I was stuffing my bag into a locker in the back office, the store phone began ringing. My other coworker in the back quickly shuffled out of there, ignoring the ringing. After a couple of seconds, it stopped.
I closed the locker and put the key into my trouser pocket. The phone began ringing again. No one from front came out back. It was company policy that the phone must be picked up, but I wasn’t to start my shift for another five minutes. I sat down at the office, and listened to it ring until it eventually stopped.
10 seconds hadn’t passed before the phone started to ring again. I picked it up. “No CallerID” was displayed on the screen.
“You’ve reached…”
“Who is this?” a woman’s voice commanded on the other end.
“This is…”
“Is this Amy?”
I was shocked into silence for a moment, “How do you know me?”
“What’s your real name?”
“What?”
“You need to stop playing dress up, it doesn’t suit you well.”
“Who is this?”
I looked at the monitor and saw the blue Chevrolet parked outside.
“Is that you following me?” I asked.
“Stop pretending to be a woman then I’ll leave you alone.”
She hung-up.
I watched the Chevrolet pull out of the space and exit the parking lot on the monitor. I didn’t see her again all day.
When I got home after closing, a notification appeared from Facebook Messenger. It was a random account—no photo, fake name—requesting to DM me. I opened their request:
"Hey,
You don’t know me, but I’ve been following this random page for a while. A handful of people are sharing your photos and private information around. Sorry you had to find out this way."
They attached screenshots of posts from this group. All of them had my photos, ripped from my Facebook and Instagram accounts, posted along with disparaging comments and personal information. One of the posts even shared my address and work place. Some screenshots of comments showed people taking glee in the idea of hurting me. All of them made fun of how I looked. Picking apart all my insecurities one-by-one.
He’s too tall
Look at those big hands
Why is he caked in makeup in every photo?
The anonymous account linked the group, but it was private.
I called in sick the next day and took everything I had seen to the police. I told a detective about the Chevrolet, the online posts, the woman in the McDonalds. Everything. I printed off the screenshots, I gave them the link to the account, I noted the reg number of the car. All the detective did was assure me everything was going to be okay and made a report. Although the lack of immediate action was concerning.
I got home two hours later. The car was parked up on the same spot it had occupied for days. I called the police then, wanting to make sure a tangible incident report was made, hopefully creating a paper trail if it ever escalated. However, before the cops could arrive, the car was gone. They somehow knew the police were coming. I made my report to the officers and they scolded me for wasting their time before driving off.
When I got into work the next day, my manager pulled me aside before I started my shift. He sat me down next to him in the office.
“We’ve been getting reports,” he said, “From employees here and head office of someone harassing everyone? And they keep naming you. I just want to make sure everything’s okay and know if I can do anything to help.”
“What?” I was taken aback, “What about the head office.”
“Well,” he said, “HR have been getting floods of calls from No CallerID numbers and emails spammed to them. It’s clear they’re getting put into spam databases and stuff. We’ve had to turn the phone off here because people keep calling at all hours of the day. Head office have made reports to the police but they’re still investigating and want to make sure we give you the proper support.”
My heart sank. Everyone in the store had heard the women’s rants. Even the middle management that know of me through the paperwork they receive. All of them know the embarrassing comments some random woman made about me. All of them knew I was being stalked.
The surveillance monitors were open on the desk. I looked up at them and saw the blue Chevrolet was in the parking lot. Something broke.
I got up and walked out the door. My manager called after me, though I can’t recall his words. There was a sizable chunk of concrete broken off the sidewalk just outside. I took it in my hand and made for the car.
I got a close look at the driver. The same blonde, 40 something woman that had harassed me in the McDonald’s. She saw me coming and immediately started the ignition and drove for the exit.
“Leave me the fuck alone!” I screamed.
I arced my arm. The concrete left my palm and flew towards the Chevrolet. It missed the roof by a few inches and kept flying until it hit a black BMW parked behind it. The concrete broke in half as it left a massive crack on the windscreen.
I fell to the floor. The emotions had finally hit me as the adrenaline wore off. I began crying and didn’t stop for an hour.
The police came. When the customer eventually came back to their car from the supermarket, he was pissed. Luckily the two officers were able to keep things relatively calm. My manager spoke for me as I sat in the cafe. The two officers came in and informed me that he wasn’t pressing charges so long as I covered the damages. Even though I had little money to my name, I agreed.
My manager then told me to take a couple days off and said he was there if I needed help. All my coworkers stared at me in complete shock as I left the cafe. None of them said a word.
I drove home by myself. Even though he needed it, I decided not to take my dog for a walk. I didn’t want to be outside by myself at that moment. Instead, I made a cup of coffee and sat by the window. The blue Chevrolet is parked down the street.
Always watching.

2024.06.02 10:32 the-goofiest_goober i’m reposting this here bc i still need help and i accidentally posted it in the wrong subreddit.

i just need someone to pls tell me what moves to make.
okay maybe i’m overreacting, but i live in a really small town. About 45 minutes ago (somewhere around 2:20 AM) some random number with no caller id called me and it was some guy named ‘Damien’ who had apparently saw me around town and thought i was cute. now i didn’t think much of this, he asked for my snap and i gave it to him. this is where it gets strange
I check his snap and his name is just a bunch of D’s and J’s, and his actual user is the name ‘joe’ with a bunch of numbers after it, he also only has a snap score of like 800, which isn’t really a big deal but it feels pretty low for a teenage boy (i’m 14, idk how old u gotta be for reddit but i literally don’t know where else to get help)
Now i’m feeling sketched out so i text a couple friends asking if they know a Damien and again, I live in a REALLY small town, so everyone knows everyone and all of them say they’ve never heard of this dude. And this ‘Damien’ guy keeps calling me ‘my love’.
So i text this guy back and he says he’s ’only seen me from a distance’ and he also sent a couple pics of himself, (he looks and sounds my age) but idk. i don’t know how he got my number, how he’s seen me, how he KNOWS me and im actually scared and i don’t know what to do. He said my ex gave him my number but he can’t even tell me my ex’s last name so im just kind of freaked out pls give me advice or something
edit: thank u, i questioned him and he never gave me a straight answer so i blocked him. im sorry that i don’t respond, im not really good with words but i did read all of ur responses

2024.06.02 07:19 treloy How to accept they are gone forever?

I ended a relationship due to suspicions of cheating and mental/physical abuse. I’m pretty confident they had BPD which explains all their weird behaviors. One day I ended things unexpectedly and they threw a tantrum doing the very things that caused me to leave in the first place. Everything ended with a couple text messages, the tantrum she threw, and then we never spoke again.
I do feel bad for not having a more serious conversation and that I sent it through text but it was my opportunity to finally leave the mental abuse and I couldn’t miss my chance. Apart from that I didn’t feel the need to justify anything to an abuser although I do wish I would have because the way I left made me look immature and incapable of handling the situation.
Unfortunately 2 months after I ended things I tried reaching out (to be friends) but I was blocked. After the first call I called again using no caller ID and they instantly hung up when I said it was me.
Now 8 months later I still want to try and fix things and at least be friends because we only live one life and it’s such a shame to lose someone so special over something stupid (honestly I’ve never had another friendship that felt anything close to this). The problem is I don’t want to make her feel like she’s being harassed (since I already tried reaching out). I guess I just sit here waiting in hopes that I hear from her one day.
I really don’t know how to move on and it kills my soul because it feels as if she’s dead. Like I have her number but there is absolutely nothing I can do.
Additional context: Things aren’t black and white and I know many will say avoid her at all costs since she was abusive. I acknowledge that but 1. I don’t think she was aware or even in control of her self when those things occurred and 2. It was like she was two people and while 1 was bad the other 1 was the kindest most beautiful soul I’ve ever met. This is why it’s so conflicting and makes me to feel bad for the damage I may have caused her- for essentially leaving her alone unexpectedly during an important/hard time of her life.

Directors at the Box Office: Richard Donner

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Richard Donner's turn.
Initially, Donner wanted to develop a career as an actor. He gained a bit part in a television program directed by Martin Ritt, who encouraged Donner to become a director instead, and he hired Donner as his assistant. Through his connections in Desilu, he started directing commercials. In the 60s, he transitioned into television, directing episodes for shows like The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, and Gilligan's Island. Afterwards, he had his chance to direct films.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1960s, the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

X-15 (1961)

"Actually filmed in space!"
His directorial debut. It stars David McLean, Charles Bronson, James Gregory and Mary Tyler Moore, and presents a fictionalized account of the X-15 research rocket aircraft program, the test pilots who flew the aircraft, and the associated NASA community that supported the program.
There are no box office numbers available, but it is said that it had a short and poor theatrical run. Reviews were mixed, and Moore said she's not proud of the film.

Salt and Pepper (1965)

"Join the club."
His second film. It stars Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Michael Bates, Ilona Rodgers and John Le Mesurier, and follows two nightclub owners finding themselves in trouble over a woman's death.
It received mixed reviews, and it earned $1.75 million in rentals.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $1,750,000 in rentals. ($17.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,750,000.

Lola (1970)

"It may be love... but it's definitely exhausting!"
His third film. It stars Charles Bronson and Susan George, and follows a 38-year-old writer of pornographic novels who meets and falls in love with a sixteen-year-old school girl whilst living in London.
There are no box office figures, but you can be sure of something: it was panned by everyone.

The Omen (1976)

"If something frightening happens to you today, think about it."
His fourth film. It stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Spencer Stephens, Billie Whitelaw, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, and Leo McKern. The film's plot follows Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by his father, unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist.
Producer Harvey Bernhard came up with the idea for a film about the Antichrist after talking with one of his friends. WB was on board, but they later pulled out, so 20th Century Fox agreed to distribute the film. Donner favored an ambiguous reading of the script under which it would be left for the audience to decide whether Damien was the Antichrist or whether the series of violent deaths in the film were all just a string of unfortunate accidents. Seltzer rejected the ambiguity favored by Donner and pressed for an interpretation of his script that left no doubt for the audience that Damien Thorn was the Antichrist and that all of the deaths in the film were caused by the malevolent power of Satan, the interpretation that Bernhard chose to go with.
There were some... dark stories over the making of the film. Some aren't confirmed, but others are verified. So take the following with huge grains of salt.
In September 1975, Peck was flying to London, and during the flight, lightning struck the plane. Shortly after, executive producer Mace Neufeld's plane was also struck by lightning while en route to Los Angeles. That's twice in a span of only a few weeks. Then, writer David Seltzer's plane was also struck by lightning. And, while filming in Rome, lightning narrowly missed striking Bernhard. Lightning may never strike twice, but four times, and to different people whose only six degrees of separation at the time was The Omen? Oh, it gets even creepier. A scene was postponed, which meant Peck was not needed on the set, so a private jet that the crew was going to charter to bring Peck in was not necessary. The next day, it was reported that the plane they had intended to book hit a flock of birds and crashed, killing everyone on board.
Neufeld, probably already on edge after his plane was struck by lightning, was planning to eat at a restaurant nearby, but it was hit by an IRA bombing. The day after filming, the hotel that Donner had stayed at was also bombed.
John Richardson, the set designer, created a particularly macabre scene where a character dies from decapitation resulting from an automobile accident. While in Holland in August 1976, Richardson and his assistant, Liz Moore, were struck by a freakishly unfortunate fate. They fell victims to a head-on-collision, where Moore was cut in half, in similar fashion to the one Richardson had designed for the film. It happened in a Friday the 13th, near a road sign which says: “Ommen, 66.6 km.”
Does that send you shivers down your spine?
Is all of this true? I... I'm not sure. I don't fully believe it. But I also don't fully not believe it. Whatever the case, it's truly one of the most insane behind-the-scenes stuff.
After a slate of weak films, Donner finally got his big break here. The film earned $78 million worldwide, becoming a huge box office success. While it initially received mixed reviews, its reputation grew with time and it has been named as one of the best horror films of the 1970s. It would spawn a franchise, but Donner didn't return for the director's chair. Why? He was preparing for something super.
  • Budget: $2,800,000.
  • Domestic gross: $60,922,980. ($335.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $78,722,980.

Superman (1978)

"You'll believe a man can fly."
His fifth film. Based on the DC Comics character, it stars Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El, and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.
Ilya Salkind had first conceived the idea for a Superman film in late 1973, and he bought the rights with his father Alexander the following year. DC wanted a list of actors that were to be considered for Superman, and approved the producer's choices of Muhammad Ali, Al Pacino, James Caan, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman. The filmmakers felt it was best to film Superman and Superman II back-to-back, and to make a negative pickup deal with Warner Bros. To show how serious he was, Alexander hired Mario Puzo (The Godfather) and paid him $600,000 to write the script.
Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, William Friedkin, Richard Lester, Peter Yates, John Guillermin, Ronald Neame and Sam Peckinpah were in negotiations to direct. Ilya wanted to hire Steven Spielberg to direct, but Alexander was skeptical, feeling it was best to "wait until [Spielberg's] big fish opens." His film, Jaws, became the highest grossing film ever, and the Salkinds offered him the job, but by that point Spielberg chose to make Close Encounters of the Third Kind instead. Guy Hamilton was hired, but left before filming due to legal issues. After seeing The Omen, the producers offered the job to Donner. He was planning to direct the Omen sequel, but decided to take Superman instead. Donner was dissatisfied with the campy script and brought in Tom Mankiewicz to perform a rewrite to start from scratch. According to Mankiewicz, "not a word from the Puzo script was used."
Before Donner signed, the film already cast Marlon Brando as Jor-El in 1975. And his terms were insane; top billing, a salary of $3.7 million and 11.75% of the box office gross profits (totaling $19 million), and his scenes had to be filmed in 12 days. He also refused to memorize his dialogue, so cue cards were compiled across the set. Hackman was cast as Lex Luthor days later, getting a $2 million salary. The filmmakers made it a priority to shoot all of Brando's and Hackman's footage "because they would be committed to other films immediately."
The first plan was for a famous star to play Superman, although Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone and Paul Newman all declined. When Donner signed, he decided to get an unknown actor. Reeve was suggested, but Donner and the producers felt he was too young and skinny. When other actors weren't convincing, they decided to give a screen test to Reeve. They wanted him to wear a muscle suit, but Reeve instead decided to take a strict physical exercise regime headed by David Prowse. After gaining enough weight, he was cast. Compared to Brando and Hackman, Reeve was paid just $250,000 for Superman and its sequel.
Filming began in March 1977, and it lasted 19 months because they were filming two films. The budget was $55 million ($303 million adjusted), which made it the most expensive film by that point. Warner Bros. only planned to distribute the film in North America, but was so impressed by the Krypton sequence, that they decided to distribute it worldwide. It was supposed to last eight months, but there were conflicts on set.
Donner had tensions with the Salkinds and producer Pierre Spengler concerning the escalating production budget and the shooting schedule. Richard Lester, who worked with the Salkinds on The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, was then brought in as a temporary co-producer to mediate the relationship between Donner and the Salkinds, who by now were refusing to talk to each other. On his relationship with Spengler, Donner remarked, "At one time if I'd seen him, I would have killed him." Due to this, they decided to stop filming back-to-back with the sequel, and Donner was assigned to finish the first film. By that point, 75% was already shot by Donner.
The film opened with $7.4 million in its first weekend, despite playing at just 508 theaters, breaking a record for Warner Bros. As it expanded, it earned $10.3 million in its third weekend, which was the biggest weekend in history. Through the December 22-28 week, it earned a colossal $18.5 million, a figure that no film achieved in just 7 days. It eventually closed its domestic run with $134 million. And WB was right in believing in its worldwide prospects, as the film earned a huge $300 million, becoming their highest grossing film.
The film also received critical acclaim, and it has been named as one of the best films of the 1970s. It won a Special Oscar for its Visual Effects. The film was deemed a cultural landmark for comic books, and it has been proclaimed by many as perhaps the most influential comic book film ever. For the world finally believed that, indeed, a man could fly.
With this, Superman was finally an icon on the big screen. While Donner filmed 75% of Superman II, he was controversially fired before resuming his duties. There would be more Superman films in subsequent years (including one next year), but none have captured the cultural zeitgeist that this one achieved.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $134,478,449. ($646.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $300,478,449.

Inside Moves (1980)

"It'll make you feel good, and that ain't bad."
His sixth film. Based on the novel by Todd Walton, it stars John Savage, David Morse, Diana Scarwid, and Amy Wright. It follows a man who became crippled after a failed suicide attempt, and he turns to drink, favoring a local dive bar frequented by the handicapped. There, he befriends the bartender, an ex-basketball player saving up for corrective surgery in hopes of returning to the court, and meets a kind young lady who aids him with his physical and mental rehabilitation.
Donner states that he agreed to direct the film only to take his mind off being fired and replaced from Superman II. He referred to the film as "the smallest film I could do that was just very near and dear to me, at that point, and I felt this is going to take my mind totally off that."
It received mixed reviews, and made just $1.2 million at the box office.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $1,200,000. ($4.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,200,000.

The Toy (1982)

"When Jackie Gleason told his son he could have any present he wanted, he picked the most outrageous gift of all... Richard Pryor."
His seventh film. The film stars Richard Pryor, Jackie Gleason and Scott Schwartz, and follows a janitor at a department store. The owner's son is told that he may have anything in the toy department. He chooses the janitor, who the owner pays to spend a week with the boy.
The film was panned by critics, and was named as one of the worst films of the year. But with $47 million at the box office, it was still a success.
  • Budget: $17,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,118,057. ($153 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $47,118,057.

The Goonies (1985)

"Join the adventure."
His eighth film. The film stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Mary Ellen Trainor. In the film, a group of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are pursued by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.
Donner noted both the difficulties and pleasures of working with so many child actors. He praised them for their energy and excitement, but also said that they were also unruly when brought together. While Donner is credited as the director, some have referred to producer Steven Spielberg as co-director.
The film received a great response, and after a slate of weak films, Donner bounced back with a much needed box office hit. The film was very influential, and it helped launch the careers of many of its stars.
  • Budget: $19,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $63,711,145. ($185.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $124,311,145.

Ladyhawke (1985)

"A magical adventure."
His ninth film. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story is about a young thief who becomes unwillingly involved with a warrior and his lady who are hunted by the Bishop of Aquila. As he learns about the couple's past and secret, he chooses to help them overcome the Bishop's forces, and to lift an infernal curse.
It received mixed reviews, and it failed to recoup its $20 million budget.
  • Budget: $20,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,432,000. ($53.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $18,432,000.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

"Two cops. Glover carries a weapon. Gibson is one. He's the only L.A. cop registed as a..."
His tenth film. It stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, and Mitchell Ryan. The film follows a pair of mismatched LAPD detectives — Martin Riggs, a former Green Beret who has become suicidal following the death of his wife, and veteran officer and family man Roger Murtaugh — who work together as partners.
Recent UCLA graduate Shane Black wrote the screenplay in mid-1985. Black stated that his intention was to do an "urban western" inspired by Dirty Harry where a violent character "reviled for what he did, what he is capable of, the things he believed in" is eventually recruited for being the one that could solve the problem. His first draft was quite different from the final film; it was darker in tone and it included massive action scale sequences. The ending of the script contained a chase scene with helicopters and a trailer truck full of cocaine exploding over Hollywood Hills with cocaine snowing over the Hollywood sign.
The script was rejected by some studios, but Warner Bros. took an interest. Producer Joel Silver was brought in and worked with Black to further develop the script. Donner also brought in writer Jeffrey Boam to do some uncredited re-writes on Black's script after he found parts of it to be too dark. Donner got Gibson involved, while someone else suggested Danny Glover. After a successful screen test, the film was greenlit.
The film was a huge hit, earning $120 million worldwide and continued launching the careers of Gibson and Glover, even if they already had a few recognizable titles by that point. It also received very positive reviews, and was another prime example of the buddy cop genre. Another Donner W.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $65,207,127. ($179.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $120,207,127.

Scrooged (1988)

"The spirits will move you in odd and hysterical ways."
His 11th film. Based on the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, it stars Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Michael J. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard. The film is a modern retelling that follows Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish television executive who is visited by a succession of ghosts on Christmas Eve intent on helping him regain his Christmas spirit.
After Ghostbusters, Murray only took a brief appearance in Little Shop of Horrors and chose to take a break. When he did feel a desire to return to acting, he said the "scripts were just not that good", and he returned to the this project as he found the idea of making a funny Scrooge appealing. Murray was paid $6 million for his role. He helped the writers, Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue, in rewriting.
Murray struggled with a scene where he reveals his redemption live on TV. Wanting a central acting moment, however, Murray gave an emotional and intense performance, deviating from his marked positions and improvising his speech. Glazer and O'Donoghue thought that the actor was suffering a mental breakdown. After he was finished, the crew applauded Murray, but O'Donoghue remarked "What was that? The Jim Jones hour?" Donner turned and punched O'Donoghue in the arm, leaving him bruised for a week.
Despite the commitment, however, there was drama behind the scenes. Murray said that while he was enjoying the experience of the script and having fun as "the meanest person in the world", he found the production "sloppy" and has expressed unhappiness with the final cut. For his part, O'Donoghue later said that Donner did not understand comedy, omitting the script's subtler elements for louder and faster moments. He estimated that only 40% of his and Glazer's original script made it into the final film and the surviving content was "twisted". Murray was also not content with Donner, "Scrooged could have been a really, really great movie. The script was so good... He kept telling me to do things louder, louder, louder. I think he was deaf." Donner, meanwhile, has a much more positive memory of Murray, calling him "superbly creative but occasionally difficult - as difficult as any actor."
The film received polarizing reactions, particularly for the tone. But as it was Murray's follow-up to Ghostbusters, it made $100 million worldwide, making it a box office success. In subsequent years, it has become a Christmas classic.
  • Budget: $32,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $60,328,558. ($159.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $100,328,558.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

"The magic is back."
His 12th film. The second installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Joss Ackland, Derrick O'Connor and Patsy Kensit. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh protect an irritating federal witness, Leo Getz, while taking on a gang of South African drug dealers hiding behind diplomatic immunity.
After the first film's success, Joel Silver asked Shane Black to write a sequel. Although he was struggling with personal issues, Black still managed to write the first draft along with his friend, novelist Warren Murphy. Although many people thought that their script was brilliant, it was rejected by Silver, Donner and the studio for being too dark and bloody, and because in the ending of the script Riggs dies, while they wanted to keep him alive in case of further sequels. They also wanted the second film to focus more on comedy, while Black's draft focused more on courage and heroics, like Riggs willing to die to protect Murtaugh and his family, due to his love for them.
When his script was rejected, Black felt that he had failed the producers. Black refused to re-write the script and quit from the project after working for six months on it. Black later said how the problem with the second film was that they did too much comedy, and how he dislikes the third and fourth films because of the way Riggs's character was changed. Donner got Jeffrey Boam back to rewrite, and one of the biggest changes was expanding Leo Getz's character.
The film received very great reviews, and saw a big increase from the original, earning $227 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $147,253,986. ($372.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $227,853,986.

Radio Flyer (1992)

"Powered by imagination."
His 13th film. The film stars Lorraine Bracco, John Heard, Elijah Wood, Joseph Mazzello, Adam Baldwin, and Ben Johnson and is narrated by Tom Hanks. Two young boys try to transform their toy into an airplane after their stepfather turns abusive. They wish to escape the physical abuse and fly away to safety.
The film received negative reviews, and it barely got 10% of its budget. Luckily for Donner, he had another film for that year.
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,651,977. ($10.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,651,977.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)

"The magic is back again."
His 14th film. The third installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, and Stuart Wilson. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh pursue Jack Travis, a former LAPD lieutenant turned ruthless arms dealer, during the six days prior to Murtaugh's retirement. Riggs and Murtaugh are joined by Leo Getz as well as internal affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole.
Jeffrey Boam's first two drafts of the script were different from the final film. The character of Lorna for example was not a woman in original drafts, but the original character still had the same personality and was just as lethal and crazy as Riggs, making him his match. Riggs also had an affair with Roger's daughter Rianne, and a few parts in the final film where Roger suspects that Riggs and Rianne are interested in each other are only parts left from the original drafts. Donner demanded some big changes on the script which included changing the original character of Lorna into a woman and turning her into Riggs's girlfriend. He also re-worked the script to be less story-oriented and not focus on the main villains but instead on the relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh. He also toned down action scenes from the script and brought back Leo Getz into the story. All of his scenes were written in afterwards.
The film received mixed reviews and was considered as weaker than the previous films. But it still earned $320 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise and Donner's highest grossing film (although Superman still has that title adjusted for inflation).
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $144,731,527. ($323.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $321,731,527.

Maverick (1994)

"In their hands, a deck of cards was the only thing more dangerous than a gun."
His 15th film. Based on the 1957–1962 television series, it stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner (who starred in the original series). The film follows Bret Maverick, a card player and con artist who collects money in order to enter a high-stakes poker game. He is joined in his adventure by Annabelle Bransford, another con artist, and Marshal Zane Cooper, a lawman.
The film received positive reviews, and was another great success at the box office, earning $183 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $75,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,631,272. ($215 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $183,031,272.

Assassins (1995)

"In the shadows of life, in the business of death, one man found a reason to live..."
His 16th film. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. Professional hit-man Robert Rath wants to fulfill a few more contracts before retiring but unscrupulous ambitious newcomer hit-man Miguel Bain keeps killing Rath's targets.
The film was panned by critics, and was a box office flop.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $30,303,072. ($62.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $83,306,268.

Conspiracy Theory (1997)

"Jerry Fletcher sees conspiracies everywhere... one has turned out to be true. Now his enemies want him dead. And she's the only one he can trust."
His 17th film. It stars Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart, and centers on an eccentric taxi driver who believes many world events are triggered by government conspiracies, and the Justice Department attorney who becomes involved in his life.
The film received mixed reviews, and despite earning $137 million worldwide, it wasn't a box office success due to its high budget.
  • Budget: $80,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $75,982,834. ($148.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $136,982,834.

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

"The gang's all here."
His 18th film. The fourth and final installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Chris Rock, and Jet Li. It follows Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh as they investigate a Chinese immigrant smuggling ring. A crime boss named Benny Chan leads them to the Chinatown.
Wanting another film in the franchise, Warner Bros. and Joel Silver tried buying a new spec script titled Simon Says in hopes of rewriting it into a script for Lethal Weapon 4. Written by Jonathan Hensleigh, the story was about a police detective and a shop owner forced to find and stop bombs planted all over a city as part of a mad bomber's revenge plot against the detective. 20th Century Fox then bought the script, and decided to use it as the basis for a new Die Hard film, Die Hard with a Vengeance. Donner was committed to another film, but Gibson was not interested.
The film had a very difficult pre-production, as the script was still being re-written and rejected. Silver ultimately brought in TV writer Channing Gibson to work on the script, after he was impressed by Gibson's rewrite of a spec script titled Sandblast. Gibson took the gig thinking it would be a more relaxed writing job than anything he did for TV. However, much like the previous two sequels, the script kept getting changed and rewritten over and over again. Gibson would end up doing more work and revisions on it than on all of his TV work put together. Production even started with only half of the script.
Something you might have noticed, is that the budget was far larger than the previous films. While the previous two films cost $30-$35 million, Lethal Weapon 4 had a budget of... $150 million ($288 million adjusted). Which means that at that point, it was the most expensive R-rated film ever and the third most expensive film, just behind Titanic and Waterworld. Why? Because the delays kept coming... but Warner Bros. was desperate in greenlighting the film. Realizing they had no big tentpole releases scheduled for summer 1998, Warner Bros. finally greenlit the film in late 1997. So they opened all their wallets and started shooting in January 1998, despite having one third of the film not written yet, including the ending. Due to issues during filming, including the script changes, production ended around mid May, less than two months before its scheduled July release. The ending was not written until it was finally time to film it. Editors had to work very quickly to have the film ready, which is why the trailers feature some deleted and alternate scenes which are not in the film. So the film was greenlit, filmed and released in theaters in the span of just 7 months.
The film received mixed reviews. And if Warner Bros. was confident that spending $150 million to rush a film was worth it, they were in for a rude awakening. The film earned just $285 million worldwide, which meant that the film was a box office flop.
It was the last film in the franchise. Although a gang in a pub in Philadelphia kept the spirit alive by making three sequels, one of which had Danny DeVito as the bad guy.
  • Budget: $150,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $130,444,603. ($250.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $285,444,603.

Timeline (2003)

It follows a team of present-day archaeology and history students who are sent back in time to medieval France to rescue their professor from the middle of a battle.
The film was a critical and commercial failure.
  • Budget: $80,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,481,943. ($33.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $43,935,763.

16 Blocks (2006)

"1 Witness... 118 Minutes."
His 20th and final film. It stars Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse. However, when they are attacked on the way, Jack learns that the entire NYPD wants Eddie dead.
The film received mixed reviews, and it marked his fifth bomb in a row. It was his final film before his death in 2021.
  • Budget: $52,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,895,141. ($57.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $65,664,721.

He made 20 films, but only 18 have reported box office numbers. Across those 18 films, he made $2,146,151,267 worldwide. That's $119,230,625 per film.

The Verdict

Despite the inconsistency of his filmography, it's hard to deny Donner as a very influential figure of cinema.
He was an expert in handling many genres; you'd expect the director of The Goonies to make 4 Lethal Weapon films? Or that the guy who made The Omen would make Scrooged? Sure, his last films indicated that he might have lost it, but you can't blame him for trying. The fact that he was willing to make Lethal Weapon 5 before his death show he was very committed. He was never too old for this shit.
And of course, there's Superman. The film that changed comic book films as we know them. It wasn't the first, but it was perhaps the most influential. There's an argument that either Batman, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Avengers, Deadpool or Joker are more influential, but those films wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Donner. It's why Kevin Feige shows the film to all the cast and crew before filming any MCU film. If the film was put in the careless hands of a mediocre director, it would've been forgotten almost immediately. And the genre would be very different today. So it's a testament to the strength of the film of how much it could change the landscape of what was possible. He and Christopher Reeve really offered something fresh and exciting. They truly made the world believe a man could fly.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Ang Lee. A very important filmmaker.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Roland Emmerich. Is it Joever for him?
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
June 24-30 Roland Emmerich The King of disaster films.
Who should be next after Emmerich? That's up to you. But there's a catch.
For this week, you'll choose from four options, all picked by me. So we won't accept any other suggestions this week. I'll give you four directors, and the director with the most upvotes will get his own post. And here they are:
  • Joe Dante: Like Donner, a very influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
  • Renny Harlin: One of the most popular directors with the biggest amount of flops. How does he do it?
  • John McTiernan: An important action filmmaker... who literally went to jail.
  • Rob Reiner: Another actor who had an incredible run as a director, before falling with North.
So which one should be next? That's up to you.

Newly Added to The Criterion Channel: June 2024 - The Sad Ballad of Uncle Paul
Criterion has released the full June 2024 lineup for The Criterion Channel.
The acclaimed and talented but controversial Paul Schrader once again made the wrong kind of headlines when he posted this classless rant on Facebook in May following Roger Corman's death.
Paul Schrader
·
ROGER CORMAN. Let's not too sentimental about Corman. Even in my exploitational extremes I couldn't interest Corman in my scripts. Rolling Thunder began at AIP but moved on to 20th. Roger wouldn't touch Blue Collar even with Pryor. As soon as they could Coppola, Scorsese and Demme all moved away from AIP. Roger was better at hyping his rep than at making good films or supporting good filmmakers.
"You can't buy class" and "talent doesn't equal class" are two old adages that perfectly apply to this old (but skilled) crank.
Still, this is quite a lineup!
Directed by Paul Schrader
  • Blue Collar (1978)
  • Hardcore (1979)
  • Cat People (1982)
  • Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985)
  • Patty Hearst (1988)
  • The Comfort of Strangers (1990)
  • Light Sleeper (1992)
  • Affliction (1997)
  • Touch (1997)
  • Auto Focus (2002)
  • The Canyons (2013)
But there's more in June than just Uncle Paul...
My personal recommendations:
  • The Birdcage (1996)
Outdated in some ways, but still as funny and brilliant as ever with transcendental performances by Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Gene Hackman.
  • L.A. Confidential (1997)
This is a just plain cool modern noir that launched several major careers and scored Kim Basinger her only Oscar nomination and win.
Previously mentioned on this sub:
Caught my eye:
  • Bottle Rocket (1996)
  • A Clockwork Orange (1971)
  • Dazed and Confused (1993)
  • Forbidden Planet (1956)
  • My Life as a Zucchini (2016)
  • Noises Off (1992)
  • The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
  • School Daze (1988)
  • Thief (1981)
I own several of these and still need to actually sit down and watch them.
Fun fact about one of the June additions:
  • Terms of Endearment (1983)
Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine didn't get along on the set. It got so bad at one point that Winger farted in MacLaine's face. I still haven't seen the movie because of this anecdote. It's all I'd think about while watching!
You can check out the complete list of other June 2024 collections on Criterion.com.

What would you recommend? What are you planning to watch?

2024.05.30 23:30 916Sacto530 Warning / Advice Request : FFL Swindled My Firearms (Sacramento)

I ordered approximately $4k of firearms (a shotgun and a handgun) and foolishly had them shipped to home-based Sacramento FFL Ralph Liguori, Member of Gun at First Sight, LLC. I later learned that Ralph has a reputation for not transferring firearms to the buyer as apparent from this review) and this post.
Prior to the shipments, Ralph was communicative with me regarding the transfers. But once I informed him that the firearms had shipped, he became unresponsive, responding only once with a short and cryptic "What shotgun and handgun did you have skipped?", even though I had sent him all tracking information in advance.
After not hearing from Ralph for a week, I blocked caller-ID and called him on 05/26. He quickly picked-up but disconnected the call once he learned that someone was looking for him. I then sent a text message informing him that I'll be taking legal actions against him. He then miraculously became very communicative, making excuses and meaningless statements.
Ralph then offered to transfer the firearms to me remotely (without me being present for the DROS)! For whatever reason, he was unwilling to meet with me in-person, at his convenience, to begin the transfer. After his highly illegal offer, I realized that nothing good was coming from the interaction, so I asked him to transfer the firearms to a different FFL. Ralph wanted money to supposedly make the transfer, but I'm unwilling to risk throwing good money after bad.
Here are our email messages and here are our text messages.
I want my property from Ralph (u/GAFSRalph), but I'm not willing to give him a dime to possibly not get it. In my estimation, Ralph is a pathological liar and swindler. Please advise.
Update: Ralph Liguori has turned-over the firearms to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. I thank you all for your advice, support, and critical mass!

2024.05.30 21:50 Abject_Dark1845 Ap harassing

Hi myself (21) and my wife (21) are reconciling from her affair. She has cut off contact completely however it is with a coworker and we are not in a position to have her quit her job however she is trying to move. The coworker as well has a different position and should have no contact.
However recently especially last night they have been basically harassing us. While blocked over the phone he has been calling still as a no caller id and even using other people’s phones to call. He left a very hateful note in her locker. And lastly sent a message to me claiming she was still having an affair. Now I can literally factually place that she is still not having an affair but that message is really messing with me and I hate it because I know that was the purpose of it.
Last week he tried going up to her asking to try and make things work still. I believe he probably is delusional and thought they were still together even though she hasn’t spoke to him in several weeks and blocked him from everything. I think last night me picking her up sparked all of this because somebody told him I was there so he realized she is working on her marriage.
On one side I want to report it to her work to get him to stop but I’m worried that he may lash out more, or even worse lose his job and I understand someone could probably act very irrationally after losing their job.
Has anyone else been in this situation before? My wife has been upfront about every interaction and told me things that she could’ve hidden without me knowing. We are attending counseling but haven’t had any sessions besides the intro and separate ones so far.

2024.05.30 20:20 Much_Election_3219 Exes/healthcare

Idk where to even start. I just keep talking to my exes for some reason. I don’t want to date, it’s more so for sexual stuff and I know that. Well anyways one of my exes ya know, finished or whatever inside of me and I just got new birth control so I’ve been tripping out about if it’s working. And then I try to go to planned parenthood and they can’t see me anymore because I have better insurance, but my insurance is sutter and they make it impossible to get an appointment. Like not impossible but hard because I have to have a referral for every new place I visit and my PCP is on maternity so basically it’s a pain in the ass. Why the hell is healthcare such a pain?? I’m just trying to make sure I don’t have an unwanted baby and they make is impossible to get any sort of help relating to sexual activity. And me and my ex have always been so weird. We’ve been broken up since last August, so coming up on a year and I will go weeks/months without talking to him and then he’ll no caller ID me and leave me these voicemails and I always end up answering him. It’s like I don’t even understand why?? I am not in love with him, it’s because I’m very lonely otherwise. I don’t have any friends outside from the people I work with and my family, so I think I just enjoy his company but I understand that it’s wrong. I just want it to be done and over with and I’ll try to tell him you know we shouldn’t talk and he always persists and tries to talk to me. Then in my head it makes me think maybe he actually does care about me, and I think maybe he does but he does not meet my standards at all. As someone with bpd I need constant communication and he’s never been capable of that. When we were together he was not reassuring at all and what ultimately lead to the break up was the lack of security I felt and his anger at me for being too clingy maybe? But anyways, we both know we’ll never be together again but for some reason always go back to one another. We will talk for like 1-3 days then he always ends up blocked again. I just want this cycle to end and I know it’s on me too but for some reason I just cant help it when I feel super lonely.

2024.05.30 19:31 Tricky-Basil-4690 Should I text my ex? I’m losing my mind.

Hey everyone,
So I cut off contact with my ex (technically not an ex) about 3 months ago. We met online and were talking on Snapchat / iMessage for a while. Things got pretty intense quickly, there were a lot of affectionate words exchanged, “you’re everything to me”, “I love you” etc. it was a lot. But we said we were big on words of affirmation so it felt so good (at least to me). We were planning summer together, spoke everyday and were just getting to know each other. But I noticed anytime I’d say something that sounds a little too much like commitment, he’d say I need to just slow it Down a lil or tell me not to scare him away. Yet I was always very receptive to his words.
We decided to meet for the first time at a hotel about 3 weeks after talking online. I went down to his city, booked a hotel, paid for his transport etc. Everything seemed fine, we had an alright time, and also had sex, twice.
The day he left the hotel, I messaged him to say let me know when you get home safe. He got home, read my message and put his phone on do not disturb. I sent multiple messages, and one which I’m so embarrassed about saying “I hope I met your expectations”. The fact he hadn’t messaged made me feel he didn’t like me in real life. He eventually did message and said he went home and fell asleep etc. But his energy was extremely off, he wasn’t typing the same, or being affectionate as he was before we met. In fact there was no affection there at all. You would think I would at least get a “thanks for everything today it was so nice seeing you” I didn’t. It felt like I was talking to a different person, one who hated me. I kept on pressing asking him what the issue was because he was acting strange? He said he had just woken up and a lot was happening in the background etc and that he’d reply to me after he was to run an errand.
So I didn’t respond, waiting for his response as he said he was busy. Also because I had done my best to ask, it’s now down to him to reach out to me when he was ready to state what the problem was. Hours and hours went by, I could see he was active online. I was going insane in my room alone, overthinking, trying to find where I went wrong, dissecting my appearance or what I said / didn’t say. Thinking about whether the sex was bad from my end.
I had enough so I texted him, to which he went insane on me. Ranting that I decided not to reply to him, and that I’m not his master where he jumps at my beck and call etc. I was so shocked because my questioning was only because I cared about him and wanted to find out his thoughts after us meeting for the first time and anybody else would do right?
He continued ranting and I just sent a long message and I blocked him everywhere. I didn’t want to sit there and be degraded. I wanted to leave with a bit of dignity.
He reached back out a month ago. Replying to a public story I posted on Snapchat. (He was on a new account) saying I looked good as I had a new haircut. Also viewing my other stories. He also called me on no caller ID about 5 times. I didn’t entertain any of these things but I wanted to do it with a clear head, and not out of emotion or love. Although surprisingly I felt angry.
I also noticed last week he used another account to view my Snapchat story. But this time didn’t reach out.
I thought I was strong but honestly I miss him a lot. I know it sounds silly because we didn’t know each other for that long but I guess that adds to the reason. I’m thinking about what if I’m blocking my blessings? What if he actually did like / love me? What if I was too impulsive?
I’m so tempted to reach out to him, or even send him a gift. But at the same time I know why I did what I did. I know how I felt in the situation. The anxiety, uncertainty etc. I want to speak to him but I also want to keep my power as he’s the one trying to reach out now. But what if I’m making the wrong decision.
I had different thoughts:
he didn’t like me in real life
the sex was bad from my side
he’s scared of commitment / taking things seriously
he feels insecure
he was trying to humble me
he just wanted to have sex
Can I get some advice please. Be as harsh and brutal as you need to be about me, him and the situation. My mind is going at 100mph and I just need some other perspectives / clarity. I’ve cried, shouted, broken down. I am exhausted.
Thanks.
Side note: before I planned to meet with him he said he had got me an expensive gift. Then when I made the hotel plans coincidentally the gift was “at the dry cleaners” because he apparently dry cleans gifts before he gives them to the person. This was clearly a lie, hence why I mentioned insecurity because I I have a good job, entrepreneurial etc. he’s unemployed and maybe felt he had to keep up?

2024.05.30 19:28 Tricky-Basil-4690 Should I text my ex?

I just think it’s scary how someone can switch personality so quickly. From being so loving to being cold even when they can see I’m in distress.
Can I get some advice please. Be as harsh and brutal as you need to be about me, him and the situation. My mind is going at 100mph and I just need some other perspectives / clarity. I have cried, shouted, broken down.

2024.05.30 11:21 mindoverego_ My (24f) boyfriend (22m) won’t let me leave him. How do I get him to take me seriously?

I have tried to leave him multiple times but it feels impossible.
Earlier this week we had an argument face to face and at the end of it I told him that I was done and not to call me/text me again. He then decided to follow me home on the train (he believes he’s being a gentleman by dropping me home) and told me he wasn’t going to leave me alone until I took him back.
The next day he starts calling me “baby”, his “wife” etc, acting like nothing happened, so I block him on everything. He then calls me on no caller ID shouting, calling me a stupid bitch and that he is coming to see me. I come outside literally out of fear that he would get violent or expose me (he’s never hit me before but idk what he’s capable of).
But this has been a daily thing now, I tell him I’m done, then he acts like nothing has changed. He keeps calling me acting normal, and I answer because I want to stay friends with him and don’t want to end our relationship on a bad note.
The only problem is the more I talk to him, the more I feel like I’m falling back in love. I don’t know what to do. I don’t have much of a personal life outside work so it’s hard not to think about him constantly.
How do I get him to take me seriously without offending him?
