Rules * Players select their decks (can decide to make them pick the same one for balancing purposes)
Things to think about * The logic of the shop can stay more or less the same, but may need to be tweeked for balancing

Origami above (almost) everyone - DAL vol 10 cover + some illustrations
Hello guys, since I read Date a Live, I realized that the novel has a certain quality that even more popular and cult novels do not have and that seems to go unnoticed by the fandom, the covers. Yes, the covers are spectacular and break away from the standard of most LNs, there is not just fanservice, there is not just a character striking a cool pose, we actually have covers with a certain visual narrative, whether a connection with the highlighted spirit itself or with the story itself and I will be pleased to show this to you, here are the rules:
  • Due to the oriental reading sense being left -> right of the page, the details will be presented respecting this sense.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words, and DAL is a novel so the images are even more valuable, the idea here is to analyze the covers and relevant illustrations to understand hints, references, foreshadowing, and contexts.
  • Pure fanservice images will not be taken into consideration (at least most of them). No, I’m not the type of otaku who says things like: “fanservice is unnecessary, objectification of women, too gratuitous and empty, it only serves to “excite the viewer””, the last one is even plausible and I understand those who think like this, but all the others are nothing more than cheap demagoguery. They will not be taken into consideration because in addition to not actually adding to the plot most of them are posted to exhaustion on this reddit.
  • Major spoilers will be avoided, at least directly.

  • The highlighted girl.
The girl of the moment is… Origami? But how is Origami a spirit?
Calm down, my boy, you haven’t missed anything, in fact I promised plot twists and we have one right on the cover.
As for the spirit Origami, I want to draw attention to two things. The first is obviously her astral dress which is a wedding dress, each astral dress follows the taste of its spirit user and Origami as a child had the dream of being a wife, but there is much more than that, so this Astral Dress is a small hint of the main plot, this will become clearer in the Spirit Info topic.
The second is about the facial expression, Origami looks like she is waking up, this may symbolize that she has just become a spirit, it may be a premonition of the plot of this volume, which deals with Origami discovering the truth about her past. But this expression will be referenced in a scene that will happen 7 volumes later, when we get there I will talk about it.
  • Angel Tobiichi.
In the volume, Origami calls the spirit that killed her parents “angel”, look at the hint there.
Again the subtitle cites the spirit’s surname, the other time this happened was in the volume 4, Sister Itsuka, clearly there is a connection here as the Tenguu-Nankou fire was a relevant event for both spirits, I also believe that the work opts to use surnames if we already know the spirit of the cover and the main reason is that Tobiichi is written with the character 1, let’s go to the next topic.
  • Spirit info.
Origami is the bearer of the first sephirot and, suddenly, everything makes sense. The first important thing here is the rivalry between Tohka and Origami. Tohka is spirit number 10, Sephiroth Malkuth, the kingdom, the final receptacle that concentrates the creative force now in its densest and residual state, while Origami is spirit number 1, Sephirot Kether, force and light in its most subtle state that flows to the others, Malkuth is a reflection of Kether on a lower plane. The rivalry between Tohka and Origami reaches its definitive stage but there is still a small detail missing.
That is, Origami, among the spirits, is the closest to God. But it’s still too early to talk about this.
And yes, spirit number 10 is on the cover of volume 1 and spirit number 1 is on the cover of volume 10, I would have liked to come here and say that I discovered this but Tachibana put this information in the afterword.
Her codename is "Angel", again this word, the name of the angel is Metatron.
  • The title.
The title goes back to being in front of the spirit, in the composition “Date” above and “A Live” below and whenever this happens the rule that must be respected is, the characters corresponding to “Live” are always positioned in the belly of the spirit.
  • Background
Last but not least, the background, this time very hidden and perhaps in a horizontal strip format, I say perhaps because that part of the astral dress occupies almost the entire cover in that part. The novelty is due to the positioning of the strip that frames Origami’s legs, which gives a rather empty aspect to this cover. Referring to the position of Origami’s Sephiroth, closest to God, above the other sephiroth, as well as referring to the main scene of this volume.
The scenario is a bit hidden, there are some debris there but nothing that allows to fully identify the scene but obviously there is a fire happening there, which is obviously a reference to that relevant event again, the great fire in Tenguu-Nankou. I don’t even need to say how relevant this event is to Origami’s life, in her first illustration in volume 1, she says: “Five years ago a spirit killed my parents.”
Finally, in my opinion this is one of the best covers, again, just imagine you go to the convenience store to buy this newly released volume and find out that Origami is a spirit, just by the shock the value is already high, if you already know the story of the anime and stop to analyze the cover, the value is double the previous one, if you know the whole story of Date a Live, and try to analyze the cover in a deeper way, the value is the squared of the previous one.

There’s something different about this volume, the compositions have improved a lot, apparently a reflection of the success of the animation.
The high school student and protagonist of this story, Shido Itsuka, says: “Tohka and the other girls just want a normal life.”
But wait, Shido is tied to a chair in a strange room and there in the middle is a bottle of water. Ok, it seems that Origami really changed sides.
The wizard who hates spirits is unyielding and responds that she will not only kill the spirits, “but also the entity that made me have a relationship with them.”
In the middle of the illustration there is a crack in the wall, symbolic.

Another plot twist, Tohka is in full astral dress. And not only that, the spirit Tohka is making a declaration of hatred to Origami.
“Origami Tobiichi, I have hated you from the beginning, but the hatred I feel for you now is probably different from the hatred I used to have before and for that reason, this time I will intend to kill you, don’t die, Origami.”
Despite everything, this is a cute declaration because for the first time Tohka calls Origami by her name and not satisfied asks Origami to resist because even though she is angry, she does not want to kill Origami.
Tohka will gain a little development in this volume, hence the illustration, we will talk about this scene later.

The spirit Origami says: “Metatron!”
Tohka says: “Origami, why did you become a spirit!?”
In a great composition by Tsunako, Tohka and Origami are referencing the positions of their sephiroth in the tree of life. Origami appears in a superior position, distant from the “camera” and in front of the sun representing illumination, Kether, while the representative of the Kingdom, Malkhut, is in a much lower position, in the foreground and with her back to the reader. So, besides everything, they are staring at each other, symbolizing the mirroring already mentioned before.
And speaking of mirroring, do you remember the illustration I asked you to keep? As I know I asked a lot I will make it easier for you, I am talking about the mono illustration number 9 of volume 2, I warned that that image would be mirrored and there it is. In the aforementioned image Origami was still wearing a basic CR Unit from AST and Tohka for the first time debuted in her limited astral dress, the reader’s angle, our angle, brought Origami almost back in the foreground, in the image now the camera position has inversed and now we are with the vision of Tohka.
A great illustration but what generates more content here for sure are the illustrations of the table of contents, I’m sure the next one will please some people here.

Look who’s back, Kurumi Tokisaki, it’s been a while since I’ve talked about “The worst spirit.”
But there’s nothing enigmatic here, it’s just Kurumi from the back (we’ve seen and will see many backs in this volume) and as for the phrase, she just stole Kotori’s catchphrase, I’m sure she wouldn’t be happy if another character started saying “ara ara” around.
Anyway, just having Kurumi here is hype enough because, whether you like the girl or not, just her being here is a sign that something relevant is going to happen.

Ellen seems confident, on the other hand Kotori seems impatient.
To ensure that Fraxinus does not interfere with Origami’s fight, Ellen plans to use the newest toy that DEM has manufactured, the Goetia ship (another name related to magic and occultism).
Ellen and Kotori have a small dialogue where Shido’s sister tries to provoke THE STRONGEST WIZARD IN THE WORLD, but Miss Matthers is calm today, at least until she mentions Woodman.
The duel is unavoidable.

There is a lot to talk about here, let’s start with the context.
Origami challenged the spirits Tohka, Yamais, and Miku to a fight to the death and by being equipped with the CR-Unit Mordred, Origami is able to build an advantage in the fight, she leaves Tohka unconscious and hurts the other 3 a lot, the former sergeant-major decides to start the killing by Yuzuru, precisely the spirit she got along with the most. It is at this moment that Tohka wakes up and seeing this whole scene she begins to go through the inversion process, but Tohka manages to interrupt this process, two passages stand out.
“This power would not save anyone.” She didn’t want to save just Kaguya, Yuzuru, and Miku, she wanted to save Origami too.
“She was an arrogant, violent, uneducated, and foul-mouthed girl, Tohka never knew what was going on in the mind of that girl who always bothered her. Even so, Tohka wanted to hold that girl’s hands.”
Tohka says: “Shido, lend me your strength.” And she gets her full powers back. And so the two engage in a really cool fight, at this moment the narration becomes from Origami’s point of view, there is a detailing about the features of Mordred and the fighting movements, time passes a little and Origami begins to feel too confident. She begins to ramble about having the ability to kill spirits, she begins to think about the death of her parents, about what she saw in the DEM report of the fire in Tenguu-Nankou.
Clearly Origami is not well, finally her body collapses and we have an illustration.
Now talking about the illustration itself, this is a reference to Mono Illustration 2 of volume 1, whose differences I highlight now. The most obvious difference is about Tohka who is no longer with that serious and empty look, here Tohka is clearly angry and screaming, in a way such expressiveness demonstrates how much this girl has developed.
Still about Tohka, this time it is she who is making an attack movement, but there is no blood in this image, an indication that it was not an attack to kill.
The other difference is about Origami, in that illustration I quote how much the “expressionless” Origami demonstrated tension, effort, and pressure, and I highlight the drop of sweat on her face. Something we can’t do here because this time Origami is with her back to the “camera” not allowing us to see her eyes.
“The eyes are the window to the soul” So not showing the eyes is a strong symbolism, you can’t read the person’s emotions, you can’t even recognize the person, humanity is taken from the person and about this, this is the last illustration in which Origami Tobiichi is still human, because…

Origami became a spirit.
“Hey, is it power that you desire?”
“What are you?”
Origami used [What] instead of [Who] in reflex. [It] might have guessed what she meant and laughed as if it found it funny.
“What I am doesn’t matter now.”
After becoming spirit Origami, without delay, she goes to Tohka and then we have the illustration which is of Origami using Metatron’s Shemesh skill.

Ara, ara.
Origami was so crazy that it was only after seeing Shido and running away from there that this girl began to understand the points, mainly about who gave her the spirit powers, the mysterious “Phantom”.
She reflects a little more and realizes that a certain spirit may have the ability to go back in time. About the illustration itself, another beautiful composition by Tsunako, in it we can contemplate Kurumi, apparently on a terrace, with building lights, Kurumi appears joyful in seeing Origami.
“It’s been a long time, Origami-san!”
As for Origami, again she is with her back turned and carrying a clone of Kurumi. The anime softened but here in the novel Origami seems to have returned the “affection” that Kurumi had done to her in volume 3 in the form of a very strong “massage”. But the clone does not seem to have liked it.
“I did not come here to fight.”
“Among the 12 bullets, is there one that can go back in time?”
Kurumi makes a little suspense but answers that, yes, there is, Origami asks her to lend her this bullet.
At first Kurumi denies, but since we are talking a little more about the Kabbalah, the Sephiroth of the worst spirit is Binah, the understanding, realizing that Tobiichi would not leave there without a “yes” as an answer Kurumi asks “why?”
“I want to go back 5 years and kill the spirit that killed my parents.”
At this moment the narration enters Kurumi’s thoughts, she begins to think that Origami came to her because she felt so invincible and therefore would force Kurumi to do what she wants, if necessary.
But then Kurumi begins to think that it was just a miscalculation by the girl, a miscalculation caused by the temptation to change the past.
“And Kurumi understood so much that it even hurt.”
Kurumi accepts but will not do this for free, time travel would cost a lot of lifetime, but that would not be a problem since now Origami has plenty of it.

Origami discovered the harsh truth.
She really went to the past, had a brief fight with Phantom, managed to be the first to take off Phantom’s "mask", also managed to hear Phantom’s real voice, and when she thought she had also managed to save her parents, when she looked down there was a little girl swearing Origami to death, the little girl was Origami herself 5 years ago.
“I will definitely kill you!”
“Who killed… my father and my mother… Was me…”
  • Mini review of the volume.
This was Volume 10, released on March 20, 2014, about 2 weeks before the second season premiered, and it’s a sensational volume.
First of all, it’s a volume full of plot twists, Shido in private imprisonment, Origami fighting with the intention to kill 4 spirits at once, Fraxinus being defeated by Ellen’s Goetia, Tohka returning to use a full astral dress, Origami becoming a spirit, Origami going to the past, Origami facing Phantom, Origami killing her own parents, the illustrations end there but there’s still a lot of content, Origami inverts, Inverse Origami destroys all of Tenguu City and finally Kurumi going to Shido, Shido also being sent to the past. Entertainment and tension are not lacking here.
Did you notice that the lore makes a lot of references to the first volumes? This volume also makes a point of rewarding the reader for all this time following the story, the plot twist of Origami for example, was foreshadowed back in Volume 1, when she aims at Tohka but hits and "kills" Shido, from there a big hint that Origami has the bad habit of killing, by accident, the people she loves the most.
Origami was not the only character developed here, Tohka also grows and thanks the Shido’s ideology, at no time did she deny the existence of Origami and even though she said she was going to attack to kill she asked Origami not to die.
Although short, Kurumi had a great participation and we were able to learn more about her and for someone who is known as “the worst spirit” she was quite kind.
The only impediment for Volume 10 to sit alongside the best volumes of DAL is because most of the answers are in the next volume and when we take into consideration what both have to offer, the overall impression about Volume 10 improves, after all there is a big cliffhanger for Volume 11.
Origami managed to take off Phantom’s “mask” and even hear her voice, with that we can know that Phantom is a girl and is someone Origami knows, that is, she is also someone we know.
That’s it, Origami was a spirit all this time, and next we will find out how Shido and Kurumi will solve this mess. Finally, stay with this iconic phrase that Origami says in this volume, the phrase says a lot about many things in DAL.
“I will now wield this power to defeat the Spirits. I will become the Spirit that kills Spirits. Once I eliminate all Spirits────I will erase the last one, me”.

Comparing, say, Pong and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is not useful. It's like arguing which is better: the Ford Model T or the Space Shuttle? But comparing games of their era is interesting and fun! Usually, best game polls are limited to a single system. This poll is unique because it includes all platforms from the era together. How will the best Arcade, Computer and Sega Genesis games compete with the best that Nintendo had to offer? It will be interesting!

The 4th Generation of home consoles launched in the West with the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1989, kicking off the 16-bit Era. The PlayStation and Sega Saturn launched in the West in 1995 which will begin the era for the next series of polls after this concludes.

This is tough to decipher too...as some songs are EASILY identifiable from just 5 seconds (Ice, ice, baby) - and thus NOT fair use. But some aren't. Usually you're safe using a very small clip of a song or video - especially if you're adding more to it. But this is a dangerous game to play - and there's places to get free audio (some sources below)

Of note...this is looked at at the time of the issue being brought to the court, not at the time of sale. Make risk like poker. If another player is winning by a lot dont bot out or suicide your stacks into whoever made you weak - instead simply cash out your troops. This system would reduce botouts and people playing for second, and very importantly, would open the door to narrative gameplay. That equals money and better immersion. Wouldnt you pay more to customize your avatar and your cosmetics if the game actually saved your army from one game to the next?
Nuance: for most games the troops you would save from your last game would simply replace your battle tokens. But there could be an online mode, maybe a season long thing, where people can use their full accumulated armies to idk, trounce a procedurally generated map?
Anyway the point is we all feel pain when we get world dommed. Tap into that and let us medevac our remaining troops out before its too late!

I remember when I watched Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings of how disorganized and poorly armed Orcs were in war. With the exception of the Urukais and the War Chiefs, most Orcs only had scraps of armor on were mostly unarmored and all they often had were crude blades. Generally the Orcs did not fight using formations and tactics with the exception of the Siege of Minas Tirith (and even there they only used formations when at the start of the Siege and once they broke through they simply just charging at the enemy with no regards for their safety).
It seems in the Movies every battles the Orcs won were either through sheer numbers or because they fought poorly trained and poorly armed innocent civilians and militia. When they finally fought a well-trained army like the Riders of Rohan and Gondor's men-at-arms, they were either massacred easily or if they did won it was because of sheer numeral advantage and often at the cost of many more Orcs than the humans would lose in the battles.
They don't even have basic hand-to-hand skills (parries, counter attack, angles, distance, etc) and they would use crude attacks like simply overwhelming their enemies with the sheer speeds of their tackles and sword blows and biting the exposed neck area of Gondorian soldiers and so forth.
However after reading the book, I can't help but feel this portrayal of the Orcs really is a mockery of the true might of Sauron. The Orcs in the book are very well-prepared and armed to the teeth with full armor. They are USED many different tactics and strategem and operated like other armies of Middle Earth using proper marches and formations and winning through cunning and well-trained troops.
Even the basic ambush at the start of Two Towers, were the Orcish party carrying Merry all by itself was a VERY tactical fight. The movie portrayed the Orcs as caught completely unprepared and slaughtered within three minutes in a single movie style cavalry charge..
The book describes the battles with such details. The Orcs had scouts around the area so by the time the Riders of Rohan detected them, the Orcs already prepared for the assault. Their troops were waiting for the Riders of Rohan with their foot archers and unlike in the movie, just this mere raid took a WHOLE DAY. Without going into full details, the Orcs were too prepared for the Rohan Riders to simply charge at them and the Rohan Riders had to use deception to defeat the Orcs (such as planting fires at night all over the field to make the Orcs think Rohirrim were sleeping their and waste arrows on those empty areas that had no horsemen). The movie portrayed the Riders as not losing a single horseman-the book described at around thirty were killed.
The Orcs weren't even destroyed in a cavalry charge-they attacked the Rohan Riders directly and it was such an aggressive attack Pippin and Merry were convinced the Riders were losing and took the chance in the melee to escape, though by the time the Rohan Riders have practically fought off the assault and defeated the Orcs the two Hobbits already have been in such panic they ran away to a nearby wood (even though a Rider killed the Orc that was chasing them as opposed to Treebard in the movie).
This is just a BASIC RAID and it already shows just how deadly the Orcs are in war. Nevermind the other major battles like Hornburg (there were Orcs in the Siege unlike int he movie), Siege of Minas Tirith, and even the early raids in Fellowship of the Rings (were the Orcs set up ambushes frequently and nearly killed the members of the Fellowship various times throughout the story in a mere raid with a few arrows almost hitting vital spots).
Does any other Tolkien fan feel the movie does not do justice to the Orcs and portrayed them as unsophisticated barbarians who all they knew was "charge,charge, and charge!"?
I know in the Siege of Minas Tirith the Orcs were shown using siege equipment and in the attack to take back Osgiliath, they actually prepared a defense of archers occupying the high ground to fight off Gondor's Knights in the ROTK movie. But other than that even in battles against Gondor, their basic MO was to charge at the Gondorian soldiers recklessly and out of formations and simply overwhelm them through sheer numbers and ferocity.
I mean for all its big flaws, the Ralph Bakshi movies shows just how threatening the Orcs were. Too many examples ti post but the fact Boromir was barely able to kill three Urukhais in his death scene and they even kept in the scene where the Orcish cheiftain at Mordor was the one to stab Frodo (not some giant troll) is quite surprising in light of Jackson's films.
Even the Rankin-Bass films portray the Goblins with as organized and threatening enough that just a group of them matching Thorin's company in numbers was no pushover and the Dwarven company chose to flee instead of engaging in a melee despite being evenly matched in body count.

Greetings to everyone. Has anyone here worked at EWR7? I worked there for about a year from 2022 to 2023. I was very disappointed by my experience especially with the senior leadership team. I was signed on as a Full Time L1 Blue Badge Associate. I worked night shifts and quickly became fully trained in all roles. I actually was one of the few associates who was fully cross- trained in every process path at the site. Because of my unique skill set in both Problem Solve/ ICQA and Ship Dock I was consistently moved around for "business needs". I was very excited to be given more responsibilities. I quickly signed up for ASC ( Associate Safety Club).
However... Despite my initial success at EWR7. I faced a lot of bullying and harassment. I am of Indian- Middle Eastern ethnicity. I am a male of 26 years old with facial hair. I never once felt comfortable working at EWR7. I remember managers directly disrespecting me multiple times. I suffered from an injury in which I had a deep puncture wound in my hand. I had bled out all on the floor. I was shocked and lost a lot of blood. My direct manager was not on site that day. I felt like I was being interrogated by another female manager on how I got injured. She told me to clock out and head to the nearest hospital. Mind you, I was almost unconscious and couldn't really even walk properly. I ended up just clocking out and drove myself to the nearest ER....
In conclusion I did sue EWR7 and I won. I even had an appeal call to the current Senior OM. He is such a piece of shit. I had constantly posted on the VOA board addressing my concerns and barriers. Yet I was never spoken to or even acknowledged... EWR7 at Avenal New Jersey is ran by incompetent and unprofessional management... It is seriously like these managers read the 48 Laws of Power and take every law seriously. I mean there is no reasoning, logic or humanity in this workplace. I was treated like a dog. From being shunned because of my injury, becoming a liability to the workplace I tried to excel at.
Remember EWR7 you are nothing. David always beats Goliath. I'm so happy everyday I sued and I did win by the way. I also was the only Associate in history at EWR7 to be both in the top 1% for productivity and ALSO being the first ever Associate to spill blood on the floor...
Thank you for everything EWR7. You taught me how to assess and identify narcissistic co workers while protecting my own business. It is very sad actually because I fucking loved the job man... There was no better feeling being an L1 Associate running Problem Solve and Ship Dock. My direct AM was an amazing manager. The job was so easy for me , it actually is crazy how hard EWR7 worked to make it as hard as possible...

Seriously.. im somewhat clueless, what i should play next on a vintage emulator. I have my favourite genere done (si-fi arcade racers, i have F-Zero X done, Xtreme G, Whipeout don't catch me, Aero Gauge is weird), i have all my Zeldas and Metroidvanais done - im through a shoot em up phase and have played all of them (and i meen: all of them). i know my favourite games (F-Zero X, Castlevania Aria, Metroid Zero Mission, Iridion 2, Guardian Legend, Minish Cap, Custom Robo) almost blindfoldet, in civ ii (<- or better the free and opensource version of ot: c-evo) i basicly have every possible scenario to gain world domination done - i just don't know, what to play anymore.
Its probably also a negative effect of emulators and roms from the interwebs: every game, we want, is simply there - somebody talks about a game, we are interessting in, its, for most retro consoles, a mather of seconds, till the game is downloadet and runs on our systems - i meen, we talking kilobytes of data, not gigabytes. Its easy, to testplay them, and if we don't like one, its not a big deal.
Thats someting "back then" we did not have - this possibility, to have every game at hands in seconds and free of charge (i know, i know, legality.. this and that) - maybee this overaccessebility destroys a bit of the wonder, a videogame was on this consoles back then, as a child or teenager with a bit of pocket money: if we bought a game back then, it was a hugh investment for us - we have done our reserach in magazins and talking to friends, hope, that we can testplay the games we want in a shopping mall etc. and if we buy a game, or get one on christmass or for birthday, we where exitet and even if the game was not so great if we hoped, we played and loved them, because they where new and we waited for it, probably even months.

My school offers both a BA and BS in Computer Science, and while both hold the same core CS courses, such as Discrete Math/Structures, Data Structures and Operating Systems, both have differences.
The BS in Computer Science at my school requires Calculus 1 and 2, Physics with Calc 1 and 2, has a Capstone course, and is ABET Accredited. This version takes 5 years to complete since it requires more classes. If you wanted a Masters in CS, you can do so right off the gate.
The BA in Computer Science on the other hand, does NOT require the Calculus and Physics courses, the highest math taken is PreCalculus and Business Statistics, and instead focuses on the math needed for Computer Science such as Discrete Structures. It is not ABET Accredited however, but you're able to easily finish in less than 4 years going this path. If you wanted to pursue a Masters in CS, you need to take Calculus 1 and 2 to be able to apply for a masters. Just like the BS in CS, you could take Software Engineering I, II, and Software Testing to mimic the BS in CS's courses.
My question here is, if one were to hypothetically pursue the BA in Computer Science at this school, what fields or what career paths can I take that would be available for both the BA and BS in Computer Science? What career paths would the BA close off due to the lack of intense math courses? Would the BA in CS be seen as inferior to the BS in CS?

I [17M] am an openly gay dude, known and been out since 11-ish, young ik.
Some context that idk if it matters: I'm social, pretty liked and stay out of trouble, been constantly told by people around me that they're surprised no guy has given me attention in a romantic or sexual manner.
I think I rank low on my appearance, but I feel like I've got a beautiful personality that's easy to like.
I've cried myself to sleep hugging my body and trying to cuddle myself, feeling my hands will be the only ones to gently run across my skin like that.
I slipped into the blackpill and manosphere ideologies (Weird for a gay dude I know.), and was able to get out of that echo chamber, but I genuinely feel it's done permanent damage to my self perception and already low romantic confidence. I used to feel sad and sometimes angry at happy couples.
I've recently fallen for a guy after almost a year. He's my age, sweet and very kind. Don't know or care about wether he's gay or not because what I do with my crushes is just be incredibly kind and helpful, complimenting, supporting and being a total sweetheart to them, kinda like a masculine "girl next door" trope. But I never actually hit on them, ever, they've all known I'm gay. Because they're either straight or bi guys, and I'm constantly won over by girls (rarely guys) who are a million times prettier and better at anything I could ever even dream of.

Some context that idk if it matters: I'm social, pretty liked and stay out of trouble, been constantly told by people around me that they're surprised no guy has given me attention in a romantic or sexual manner.

As the shiny weekend comes to a close, I and I'm sure many others have played a lot of endless the last few days. While I do love this game, I can't help but notice how much of a drag endless is. Endless is basically just one big gambling simulator where you get dopamine when you get a shiny or legendary and it keeps you playing long enough to get the next hit. As someone who enjoys both making and balancing games, I wanted to take some time to dive into why endless has the problems it does and how they can be fixed. My hope in sharing these ideas is that endless will eventually be revamped into something more fun in the long term instead of just a shiny grind. So strap in as we discuss the problems with endless and how to fix them.

Part 1: Why play RogueLites?

I think the first step to understanding what is wrong with endless is to understand why we are even playing this game in the first place. I hear the terms roguelite and roguelike used interchangeably a lot so I wanted to quickly address the difference between them. The short of it is roguelikes complete reset your progress in between runs while roguelites have some progress carry over. This puts PokeRogue firmly in the roguelite category, since you can unlock new starters, and as such, I will be operating under the assumption that having progress carry over between runs is important to the game for the remainder of this post.
As for what makes roguelites fun, I think there are a few different factors. First and foremost is replayability. Since a run is never the same as any other, the genre has infinite replays built in, so long as you don't get bored of the core gameplay mechanics. However, the enemies and rewards you get during each run are not the only thing that can change between runs.
This leads me to my second point which is the fun of trying new builds. Most roguelites have a wide variety of weapons and approaches to progressing that can either be chosen at the start or unlocked during the run. Because of the random nature of the genre, even similar builds will fluctuate run to run and trying to get your build to function perfectly like you want it to is a fun challenge. You may have an idea of what you want to use but then you get an item that changes the way your build works and so next time you play this build, you actively seek out this item because it was a cool adaptation. Being able to not only try, but succeed, with a variety of strategies and builds is incredibly important to the long term fun and replayability of roguelites.
The final factor in why roguelites are fun is because you can constantly push for a new record. This is specifically something unique to endless. The game can never truly be beaten. You as the player set a goal for yourself and compete against that goal, trying to achieve it. When you eventually do, you set a new goal and push for that one. These goals can be personal to you, like trying to reach a certain round or seeing how far you can progress with a specific build, or they can be more competitive, like trying to push for a record in the highest round ever achieved.
Roguelites are addicting and fun because you never truly beat them, you just find new ways to play them. Now that we understand a bit about why roguelites are fun, let's look at PokeRogue to see how it matches up.

Part 2: Endless is a Solved Game

First, let's look at the good parts of endless. Endless has good rewards for playing it. As you go deeper into endless, you get more and more rare starters. Right now, starters are the only thing that carries over between runs so endless is the best way to progress your account. In theory, this should increase replayability as you can do an endless run, get new starters, do a run with your new starters, rinse and repeat. In practice though this simply isn't true.
While the progression endless gives your account is good, it's ultimately pretty meaningless and most of the actual experience of playing endless isn't fun at all. When you get deep into an endless run, which is arguably where most endless players will aim for since otherwise you would play classic, the game becomes stagnant. You one shot everything or you get one shot. Type matchups don't matter. Stats don't matter. Nothing matters except being able to oneshot the opponent through whatever tokens or abilities they have. This isn't a problem in itself but if we look a little deeper it becomes one.
There's nothing wrong with different builds simply being different ways to oneshot. What is an issue though is when the core mechanics of Pokemon stop mattering and there is only one way to win battles. Type matchups are arguably the most important mechanics in Pokemon, right after catching new Pokemon. The fact that these eventually are rendered useless means that there's no reason for this to be a Pokemon game in the first place. Additionally, even just having a really strong Pokemon that can cut through everything with strong STAB doesn't work because the only late game strategy that works is fixed damage and sturdy. When you finally reach rounds that push the limits of where you've been before, these should be the rounds that your build is online and being tested. Instead, you are forced to transition to a Pokemon with sturdy and metal burst or fixed damage like salt cure plus soak. There is no room for trying different builds to push boundaries because the game has been solved. We know what the best and only strategy is and if you aren't using it, you can't compete.
The fact that only one strategy is viable means that any progress you make between runs doesn't matter either. Why use new starters when you're just gonna end up using gargancl with salt cure or metal burst blissey? This means that the only thing that endless is actually good for, making your account stronger, is made irrelevant by the same mode. This is the biggest problem endless has but there are a few smaller ones I'd like to quickly address.

Part 3: Smaller Endless Problems

I'll try to keep this section brief and run through these problems quickly.
First, generic encounters are too time consuming. There is no reason the random, non-boss Pidgeott should ever take more than 5 seconds to defeat. Generic encounters serve the purpose of giving you a few rewards to make you stronger before the next major fight. Endure tokens waste so much time. If I'm overkilling this raticate by 5000%, I shouldn't have to sit through 30 seconds of dialogue telling me it endured the hit, raised all its stats, flinched, and then need to select my move again. Even boss encounters don't need endure tokens. They are already gated by segmented health bars. These are actually good and mean you have to think about how to get through them. Why then, does the boss get to live with 1 hp when I've finally overcome it? Simply put endure tokens need to go.
Second, boss battles are too repetitive. I don't mean pokemon labeled "boss" but instead the bosses you encounter every 50 floors. These should be the rounds that test your build but instead, it's the same as every other "boss" you encounter in the run. These rounds need to be made harder and all other rounds should be easier, that way there's a clear distinction between fodder and challenge. The Eternatus encounters are actually pretty good from a challenge perspective since they regularly take a while to beat. If the 50 floor encounters were more like this, and the Eternatus encounters were varied with some other Pokemon so you need multiple strategies instead of just a fairy/steel to wall it, the boss fights would be pretty good.
Finally, if you can't oneshot an enemy, it shouldn't be able to oneshot you. Essentially, bosses need to not be able to be oneshot. What this means though is that you will take hits and in that case, you need to be able to survive them. Damage Reduction tokens are actually ok but damage multipliers just make every move a oneshot. Boss fights should play out more like VGC matches, where there's constant switching of your Pokemon to have an advantageous type matchup. Your switches need to be able to survive hits when they come in, or else you need a way to correctly predict when you can make a switch for free to get a better Pokemon out.
I could go more in depth on all these problems and maybe I will sometime but for now just know they are there and will influence what the fixes need to fix.

Part 4: The Fixes

Now that we understand what's wrong with endless, let's talk about fixing it.
The first and easiest change is that endure tokens need to be removed. This speeds up the game and gets you into boss fights faster. Simple, done, this one change makes the game so much more fun and less tedious.
For some bigger changes, let's take a look at the rest of the tokens. Status tokens mean nothing since your Pokemon will always have infinite lum berries once you get 3 berry pouches and a mini black hole. Fusion tokens are cool. These throw wrenches at you and are fun and should stay. Damage reduction tokens are ok. These tokens prevent you from oneshotting the boss and as we discussed before, that's good. Damage multipliers increase the problem of oneshots though and for that reason need to either be heavily nerfed or removed. If my defensive Archaludon is getting onehshot by vine whip, that's a problem. Finally, recovery tokens are alright. The make it so you can't just stall out a boss completely. You have to constantly be damaging them so they don't heal back to full. I would limit these though to heal a smaller amount. Something like 1/16 of max HP every turn should be the maximum that recovery tokens can do. This is the same as leftovers in the main series and that is one of the best items for survivability in the entire game.
I would make the following changes to tokens: remove endure tokens, remove status tokens, remove damage multiplier tokens, heavily nerf recovery tokens, keep fusion tokens, and keep damage reduction tokens. Also, remove all tokens from any Pokemon without a boss health bar. You may think this is too big a nerf to enemies but in conjuction with this, I think the mini black hole also needs to be changed or removed. With status tokens gone, it's more important than ever that status is meaningful when it is inflicted. Without the mini black hole, you need to actually think about what to do about status instead of just letting your infinite lum berries solve it for you. Maybe now you need to spend some of your post encounter rewards on lum berries or items other than rare candies since you can't just steal them off wild pokemon for free. Of course, things like magician and thief still exist but these are ok because they are niche. The grip claw is also alright since it isn't guaranteed to steal something, it just gives you a little more breathing room.
Next up on the list is boss fights. For this section, I'm only referring to the every 50 floor ones. The token changes I believe would solve a lot of the problems with this fights but there are two big changes I would implement. First, these fights should all be 2v1 double battles like the final battle of classic. This gives room for more strategy and makes switching out more of a viable option if you can predict which slot the AI will target. Second change is to increase the movepools of all bosses. This may be controversial but I think bosses should not be limited to 4 moves. Bosses having a wider variety of options makes them much more formidable and means you need to prepare for more threats. As for what these movepools would be, I would say any egg moves or level up moves should be fair game. Maybe some tms as well but those would need to be hand selected which is harder to implement.
The last few changes I'd add focuses on making starter choice important and allowing for cooler builds. There needs to be more variety in held items. The main series has so many cool options to draw from and adding them makes for a lot of variety in what a given pokemon can do. Imagine a Pokemon with sniper and 3 scope lenses to always crit. Or a Pokemon with a bunch of leftovers and rocky helmets and rough skin. In return for the wider variety, there would need to be some limit on how many non-berry, non-consumable held items a pokemon could have. Without a limit, the best strategy would still be to just stack all the items on one Pokemon and let it sweep. I think 20 would be a good place to start though this could be changed. It also adds an opportunity cost. Your sweeper can't also be tank with 3 leftovers because you need to use those item slots for offensive items.
Finally, I would add one new item to the game with a unique effect. Similar to the DNA splicers, this would allow you to combine two Pokemon to get a stronger one. The new item would be ability capsule and here's how it works. The ability capsule allows you to select a pokemon from your party, sacrificing said Pokemon and adding its ability to another Pokemon. The catch though is that the ability can only be added to a Pokemon that was selected as a starter for the run. Some abilities would have to be non-transferable like wonder guard or stance change but I think this goes a long way in making really cool combinations to aim for late game. It also makes your starter selection more important since you can think about what abilities you want to add to your starter later.

I want to be clear that I love this game and am not trying to be super negative. I just want to see it do well months and years from now and believe these changes are the first step towards doing that. I have a lot more I could say but this post is already long so I'll leave it at that. I sent this through as a letter to the podcast, and thought I'd ask the community the same thing
Once a month a local tournament is held near me, with maybe 30-50 attendants spread across a dozen games.
With a $10 entry fee, to help cover room rental and tournament winnings, then Gold, Silver, and Bronze tier games, the event gets quite lively.
(Gold tier games cost $10 to enter. So in total, it would cost $20 to partake in SF6 or Tekken 8 or Smash, silver is $5, bronze is free. And yes, it's individual fees for each game.)
But at every tournament, the last game run is - The Poverty Cup. A free to enter tournament with an unnamed game, disclosed only as the game is booted up.
The excess of the $10 entry goes towards the poverty cup payout. Last time, the poverty cup was 'Def Jam Fight for NY'. Before that, 'Bloody Roar 2', and before that was 'Mortal Kombat vs DC'. Every time, it's some obscure fighting game or an outright trash fighter that no one would have reasonable played in a decade.
That poverty cup ends up with the most attention from the sheer ridiculous nature of what gets put down for people to play with no preparations.
