How to negotiate salary after job offerow to negoiate salary sx

Commission-based pay questions

2024.05.17 13:54 k31137050 Commission-based pay questions

There is a job I am looking into that pays a very fair base salary for the area, but they also offer 22% commission after bringing $700K of annual net collections into the practice. I was just wondering:
1) For those who maybe have experience with this, how feasible is it to bring in $700K of net revenue to a practice (regular derm office that also does aesthetic procedures, presumably on a self-pay basis) and in how many months approximately could I expect to achieve this goal (I have been practicing for 8 years and my current employer has a large emphasis on numbers, so I have learned to be fairly efficient while also maintaining my personal standard of good practice).
2) Is this money taxed differently, like as a 1099? Of course I’m trying to take into consideration potential change of tax bracket with increased income, which could end up with me making essentially the same amount of money in the end.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

2024.05.17 13:49 Wrong-Shame1654 Moving to Korea in August ESL

Hey guys, I was wondering about some thoughts and would appreciate any advice on the following:
I was offered a position STARTING my first job in Korea for 2.8 million won a month plus provided housing or 400,000 won stipend if I choose a different housing aside from provided.
The job itself is has very reasonable working hours and all the benefits that I’d assume comes with most teaching jobs that come in Korea.
Most of the benefits included seem very reasonable and well, and I’m sure if I renewed the contract I could negotiate for a 3.2 mil salary next year.
However, I’d like to know a few things before I say yes to the offer:
Taxes: as an American what would be the tax on a salary like that?
Area: Yeongtong, seems like it’s sort of outskirts Seoul, which I don’t mind. But what’s housing like price wise that anybody who’s familiar with housing apps can tell me?
Salary: Is it reasonable? Should I wait an negotiate for more?
Future: I have a degree in business management, and 6 technical degrees, all in business. I speak four languages, and I currently work in Japan as a manager for a hotel (Let me mention that I had a Japanese stepmother , and I came to Japan to settle down.
I know both countries have infamous toxic work culture, but I would say at least Korea has more western influence and acceptance than Japan. At least that’s what many friends of mine who live over there tell me.
I’d like to avoid also going down the rabbit hole of personal opinions of work culture. I’m just providing a little backstory so people understand.
With the provided housing and the salary, I feel like I could save more money monthly there than I do now in Japan.
Currently even with a strict budget I can only manage to save about 30,000 yen a month.
(The housing is killer)
So I’d like to know how much you guys spend in food, gym (I’m a gym rat) and any extra tips would be much appreciated.

2024.05.17 13:32 acab-420 Am I losing the best opportunity of my life or I'm just getting paranoid?

So I'm currently on a performance plan and will pretty much lose my job in a month.
Couple of days after receiving these news I was reached to by a recruiter of a company I worked for part time back in September. She said she wanted me to interview for a full time position they're opening and they wanted firstly to OFFER IT (her choice of words) to us who previously worked part time on the project and had a fantastic performance.
I couldn't believe the coincidence, showed my interest, and scheduled the interview with a partner. Interview went well and the whole time it sounded like they're just waiting to hire me. At the end the partner asked me to send him the range of salary I would be satisfied with. I asked him what did they have in mind and he said they thought the salary could be similar to what I was paid on the project I did.
Now, that salary would already be 100% more than I ever earned, but considering the job I would be doing will be tough, and also considering I got leverage as already proved myself, I told him I would want more than that. He said to send him the range and they will discuss it.
Tomorrow morning I send the range where I raised the initial offer from 10-25%, thanking him for the opportunity and saying I'm ready to fully commit to this role.
He replies that they will consider it and get back to me soon on the next steps.
I haven't heard from them in 3 weeks, I have also sent an email a day ago, letting them know of my notice period and asking if there is any progress on the process. Still nothing...
Did I fuck up majorly by negotiating (I really just thought they were gonna tell me they're sticking to the initial offer in the worst case), or am I just getting paranoid?
Notable mentions:
Help cause I'm really getting anxious.

Here are nine important things you should keep in mind when applying for a visa to Study in France:

1) Right Business School or University

Getting into the right school sets the stage for your future academic and career goals. France has many well-known business schools and universities known for their creative programmes and high academic standards.
International students benefit from Studying abroad in France even without taking the IELTS or any English test. This makes visiting France easier for non-English speakers, making it a popular college destination.

2) Best Suitable Program to Study

For a fulfilling educational experience, it is important to look into programmes that match your academic interests and job goals. Many programmes in France are designed to meet the needs of international students. Business programmes are very common. Master of Management (MIM) degrees in Finance, HR, and Marketing prepare students for worldwide success.
Also, choosing an 18-month programme gives you plenty of time to focus on your studies and look for student jobs. In France, many schools offer internships or part-time jobs that give students important real-world experience and the chance to meet new people.

3) Your Documents Checklist

Visa applicants must pay great attention to every detail and have all the necessary papers. Documents that are often needed are:
  • Proof of being enrolled: A letter from the school you want to attend stating that you have been accepted into a programme.
  • Statements of money: Proof that you have enough money to pay for education, living costs, and other costs related to the programme.
  • Coverage for health insurance: Proof that you have full health insurance that covers your whole stay in France.
  • Passport that works: Check that your passport has two blank pages for visa stamps and is valid in France.
You must carefully examine the list of materials the French study abroad consultant or office provides to ensure the application procedure runs smoothly. For further details explore France VFS Checklist by Edugo Abroad, we are a top Europe education consultant located in India.

4) Post Study Work Option

Knowing what jobs, you can get after finishing school in France is important for planning your future career. France has policies are good for international students who want to find work after graduation. For example, you can stay longer to look for work or go to school for longer.
With the temporary residence card, students can stay in France and look for work for up to 24 months after graduation. During this time frame, graduates can work full-time in any area without needing any other work authorization. Additionally, graduates from French schools may be able to get a "Passport Talent" visa, which makes the transition from student to job easier.

5) Employment & Job Opportunities in France

France's strong economy and wide job opportunities are good news for skilled workers in many fields. Foreign graduates can employ their talents and knowledge in technology, healthcare, finance, and hospitality.
Make local connections and check your school's internship or job placement programmes to boost your chances of finding meaningful work in France. Speaking and writing French well can increase your work prospects and help you integrate into French culture.

6) Settlement Options with Family After Study

Everyone needs to know the visa rules of Student Visa for France from India and how to reconnect with family if they want to live in France permanently or bring family members. Family reunions and long-stay visas for dependent children and spouses are available in France.
To reconcile with your family, you must have a stable salary, a suitable home, and enough health insurance for everyone. Planning and talking to immigration officials or lawyers can speed up family reunification and help your loved ones adjust.

7) Diplomatic Relationship of France with India

France and India have diplomatic links, including working together, sharing culture, and making strategic partnerships in many areas. High-level visits and projects led by leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi have strengthened relations between the two countries and encouraged them to work together in areas like defence, science, education, and more.
These diplomatic ties help Indian students learn in France through academic exchange programmes, scholarships, and cultural projects. The fact that there are Indian societies and cultural groups in France also helps Indian students get used to living in a new country.

8) Affordability of Cost in France

Even though France has a high standard of life and a world-class school system, you need to know how much it costs to live there to prepare your money. The cost of living varies by city; Paris costs more than other cities.
Lodging, transportation, food, medical bills, and personal expenses are crucial. Live in student accommodation or shared apartments, travel the bus or train, and cook to cut costs. Another way for international students to get money is to look into scholarship programmes, part-time jobs, and financial aid programmes.

9) Choosing the right Application & Visa Advisor

Applying for a French student Visa can be difficult, especially for international students who don't know how French immigration works. Selecting a reputable application and visa consultant or guide can be very helpful and supportive during the application process.
When hiring an advisor, consider experience, name, success record, and cost and service transparency. A skilled advisor from France visa consultants in Ahmedabad will help you gather papers, fill out visa application forms, schedule visa interviews, and address any concerns.

2024.05.17 13:02 Royal-War4268 Alaska

I’m two weeks away from my move to Fairbanks. I’m a truck driver and have a job lined up with an old buddy of mine who is an owner operator with 2 tractors. He’s been driving the Dalton highway for 30 years and does it safely. We will be teaming together for the summer while I learn the road and he teaches me the ropes. Then we will convoy together during the winter. I’m not fearful because I’m in good hands here. The money is going to be really good.
I’m a healthy mid 30s guy. Very fit and active. My wife and 2 kids are staying in the lower 48 until I make it through my first winter. I don’t want to uproot them, and my wife doesn’t want to be uprooted, until we know I can make it working in those conditions. My wife is a stay at home mom and homeschools our kids. We stay involved in our local church and do our best to be sociable. We’ve been raising our kids with very limited technology because we observed early on how too much screen time causes them to be emotionally disregulated. This means they spend a lot of time outside playing, or inside playing with legos and barbies.
I’m going to do everything in my power to make it through the winter. I’ve taken care to make sure i have no vitamin deficiencies. My vitamin D is good, and I supplement daily. I have some UV lights I will be using once the sun disappears. I keep weights in my truck and stay fit despite all the long days.
Our reasons for picking Alaska is mostly to do with their laws. My wife and I had a very bad time riding out the pandemic in an authoritarian third world country. After that experience we are keen to live somewhere that will leave us alone as much as possible. We are intimidated by the weather. All that being said, my salary will be large enough that we should be able to afford all the toys you need to truly experience what Alaska has to offer. We’ve talked about it at great length and would end up looking for a property in the hills outside fairbanks, high enough so its above the fairbanks inversion layer that makes life so miserable during the winter. Our current house is offgrid, so it isnt anything new. Just the climate is much harsher.
Any locals have any advice, or have any thoughts that jump out at you from my post?

2024.05.17 12:24 ramplank Where did you get the idea for your business?

After working corporate jobs for the last 12 years and making steady promotions and salary increases I got bored and was looking for a change. I took the first step and I’m now self employed and I have my first assignment. But I’m basically doing the same kind of work with the only difference being the way I get paid.
I now want to take the next step and actually start a business that does not rely on me selling my time. But where do you start? I’m pretty passionate about coffee and coffee roasting but I did some math and I don’t see my self making a living of that. I don’t feel like drop shipping random junk from china.
So my question is basically how did you come up with the idea for your business?

2024.05.17 11:37 No-Incident6452 Unfair Negative Quitclaim? Please help me out.

Hi Reddit. First time posting here. I just want to know if anyone here has encountered a "negative amount on the quit claim" after resigning, or after not passing probationary. I feel cheated by my previous company.
For context, I wasn't regularized by the company because my KPI scores didn't make it, which I humbly accepted (end of April). The process was smooth and all. There's supposed to be a bond, but since it was the company that gave up on me, I don't have to pay them anything. I even got the latest salary.
Or so I thought.
I received an email from the company in regards to signing the quitclaim and another non-disclosure agreement. This is last night, as of typing this post. I was shocked when I found out that there was a negative amount on my quitclaim. (not the accurate amount, but it looks like -Xxxx.00 Php) I asked HR why, and they said that my last pay was given along with my latest salary. I wasn't informed about this, and they never gave me the receipt for my last pay. HR said it was their fault for not computing it properly... But I STILL need to pay. I do not have a job now (I'm applying left and right though, because I have a family to feed), and the rest of the money I have left is for the other house expenses, and possible expenses I need to spend during applications.
It felt unfair because if they needed to delay any payments for me to avoid discrepancies like this, I would have accepted, they just need to tell me. To make things worse, there's no written conversation since all of our conversations are done via call. I can't even access my payslip because they blocked my company email, the night after I wasn't regularized. I feel like reporting this to DOLE, but I do not have enough evidence, aside from the conversation we had in email.
I wanna know if there's any similar experience that happened to anyone here, may I know what happened and how you guys deal with it? I am at loss now. Please help me.

2024.05.17 10:45 justhatcarrot Should I buy a house based on this math?

Hi!
TLDR at the very bottom.
I’m from eastern Europe so I know it’s difficult to give an advice, but I’m interested purely from math perspective if I should buy a house or not.
So, the average salary here is about 500$ a month - this is an important variable in this math, as it helps putting things into perspective.
I make about 3000$ per month, so 6x average salary.
I don’t have any debt whatsoever as debt is not popular here.
A decent apartment (2 bedroom) will cost about 100k$ here and require a downpayment of 20k.
I’m only considering 15 years mortgage, so for remaining 80k I would have to pay about 750$ per month, which would be 25% of my income.
Paying it off early (pay double or more every month for first 2 years) would cut my mortgage period in half (or more), so I will save a loooot on interest, but even so, my payment will still remain at 750$ per month for the next 5-7 years, which is 50% more than the average monthly salary…. So it’s a lot of money.
I don’t have any debt, but also not a lot of options to significantly increase my income, as I’ve pretty much peaked with my salary in my profession. I even might start earning less (2000$ per month) if I lose my job.
I’ve been here for almost 5 years already but it doesn’t feel super stable (but I won’t feel super stable at any job as I work in IT and it’s not a stable market).
I will also have to temporarily drain my emergency fund leaving only about 1000$. I will work to rebuild it asap… I know it’s not good, but a thousand dollars is worth more here.
So, the first thing:
One way to bring down the monthly payment is to have a bigger downpayment, but to save for a bigger downpayment I will continue spend a lot of money on rent (500$ per month).
Basically to save another 20k I will spend another 20k on rent - which might make sense, but not a lot tbh.
I kinda feel it makes more sense to just get a bigger mortgage and pay it off earlier with money not spent on rent.
So again, my doubts are related to the fact that I can afford it now, but if something happens and I lose my job - it will be a pretty big monthly payment.
Does my math looks safe to you?
Another question is how much house should I get?
Because an 80k debt in a country with 6k average yearly income doesn’t sound good at all, I’m also considering getting a small 1 bedroom apartment, which would put me in a smaller, 50k debt… but it will be a temporary home, and the risk that I won’t be able to afford a bigger house later in my life and will be stuck in a small apartment is something that worries me a bit.
So, what are your thoughts on my situation?
I don’t want to enter a discussion about alternatives, or ways to increase income by investing, as I don’t have such options here.
Thank you!
TLDR:
Thank you!

2024.05.17 10:29 Typical-Fix8364 Taking a literal pay cut from my minimum wage job to work as a part 2 assistant UK

As the title says, I am taking a literal pay cut to start a new job as a part 2 architectural assistant in the UK- coming from working at a minimum wage bar job. I have 5 years of experience under my belt (I was working abroad as an architect so have returned to uk to get my qualification- so there is a cap on my salary due to being a part 2)
I still can’t quite comprehend how this is happening.
I will be getting 28k annually in the architecture practice- take home of 23.5 after tax. Whereas in my bar work, take home would be 26k (this is partly due to tips).
In what world, does one study 5-6 years, work under immense pressure, and then earn less than a minimum wage job?

2024.05.17 08:38 Consistent-Ad-413 Career advice, ENG 22 pass, lost, wasted around 2 yrs after btech, what to do next?

Hi, I am 2022 eng (ece) passed out. Worked in a MNC for 6 months in IT, then switched to a tech support role in another company and worked there for 2 months. Not interested in the IT field as I have tried myself adjusting in this field for around 1 year. Wasted 4- 5 months after leaving the second company. Now, working in a edtech startup from last 5 months in a digital marketing role and handling other stuffs of the business. Salary is also very less, even lowered than the first company i placed right after college. Now, I am also not liking working in this company, my constant worry is that how long would it take to get stable in the career, atleast 50-60k per month. This worry keeps disturbing me right after my college as I have lot more responsibility and know that I will be in a need of huge money in the next 2-3 years for my mother's health and other necessary things. This worry does let me do the things I want to do or not even let me spend time in one day particular job for a long time as my mind always tells me that how long would you do this job, there is no growth in this company. This kind of thing happening in every company i worked, and to be Frank I always get the role that didn't have any growth in future and thus i lost interest in the work in the initial months itself.
I am now fully confused career wise and I can't spend too much time figuring out my shit. I had of lot of interest in my college days and want to pursue so many different things, and even good at my academics but due to my financial state, accepted the job from my college in the mnc and things are not working in my favour after that.
Now. i iust want a stable iob which pays me atleast 50-60k per month and thus i am thinking of preparing bank po exams right now. I even started a little bit prep with eng and reasoning. Thought of cat as well but i am not able to take much bigger loan at this moment. So banking exam seems more suitable to me and there process is also bit faster compared to other govt exams. Also, i have a fairly good academics so i think i will be able to clear it 2 attempts max. Acdemics: 10th- 75+, 12th-93+ , Btech- 89+, work exp: around 1 yr combines (had a smalll issue with the epfo account as i abscond my second company)
My questions: 1. Is it a wise optio to prepare for the bank exam considering my condtion? 2. What would be other good options based on my background in which getting a job is little faster. 3. I think i have some psychological weakness and mentally disturb stressed and disturbed as i am not able to stick with anything for a longer time. I find interest in everything (finance, economics, psychology, hindi literature, technology as well etc) so this could also be a potential reason for where i am right now.
Sorry, if my text doesn't have any flow, i just typed all in one go whatever comes to my mind.

2024.05.17 07:49 gymgoer124 Employee hasn’t paid correct wages for 6 weeks

Hi all, I’ve gotten a new job in the start of April and for the last three pay periods I have not recieved any pay or paystub. I was told this was due to an error with the third party app they use to manage scheduele and pay. So I waited, yesterday May 16th was another pay period, and I received two payroll deposits into my account with no pay stubs for these amounts. Without a paystub I am was not sure what hours I’ve been paid for, but I knew for a fact it was not the total amount for the 6 weeks I’ve worked due to how little the amount was. I notified my employer and I’ve received a myriad of inconsistent stories and attempts to gaslight me into believing she isn’t in the wrong. I no longer trust my employers word so I went ahead filed an employment standard claim. I know she will be notified of this and I will probably recieve a significant cut in hours due to this. Also let me add, my hourly salary has also never been discussed with me basically anything concerning finances was not disclosed with me (I put my blind trust in her since it is a small business unfortunately) due to this I don’t even know how much I should be getting paid an hour. Im operating on the basis that it is minimum wage. And even with this assumption my pay is short by a significant amount of money.
So I have a few questions, what rights do I have in this situation? Is there any resources you can point me to read so I can fully equip myself with legal knowledge. How long do employment claims in Ontario usually take? Is she allowed to terminate my employment after this claim has been filed? If she were to reduce my hours am I able entitled to anything legally for this?
Thank you for your help!
edit: sorry heading is meant to say employer!

I have an amount in mind but I wanna know other people’s thoughts

2024.05.17 06:34 aanand_ard You need to warm up before starting any topic

One trick I followed before studying any topic was to first randomly read a blog, editorial, article, journal or white paper related to that topic. These are very well written and make you comfortable with the topic. It is like having an appetizer before a meal makes you more hungry. After this if you study that topic you will better appreciate it and have a very nuanced intricate knowledge of it.
Many people just directly start the topic get bored after half a page and be like kal karenge vo kal aata nahi hai aur saal beet jaate hai. They enter a cycle/vortex of procrastination which eats away years
I will share an example from my prep. I was about to start the topic on poverty and income inequality for me it was quite boring given all those indexes etc.But then I read an article written by someone which I will quote below
"Why are the rich getting richer?
Think about it
The Answer is simple - P A P E R
As simple as that
Paper value is the world's fastest multiplier compared to Land or Factories or Machinery or Salary
Take Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani
How did their personal wealth grow by 800% and 4100% over the last decade?
Salaries?
Nopes
Bonuses?
Nopes
Dividends?
Nopes
Fixed Deposits?
Nopes
Land Investments?
Nopes
Paper Valuation of their Equities and Stock!!!!
Paper Wealth is why Byju Raveendran, the Oyo Founder , Ola Bhavish Agarwal are all Billionaires today
In the olden days
India didn't have a share market or had a very limited share market
Wealth was defined by Acreage of Land, Crop Yield, Savings in various accounts, Fixed Deposits, Size of Profits, Interest earned from various ventures, Factories etc.
The Rich thus grew rich at a lesser pace
It took time for your wealth to double
It took a lifetime for your wealth to quadruple
Today?
It takes one afternoon
Today someone makes a $ 150 Million offer to a startup and boom - the valuation rises from $ 60 Million to $ 800 Million
Thus the Founder who owns 40% of the Startup rises from $ 24 Million to $ 320 Million
It takes six months of trading to get your shares from ₹2100/- to ₹4000/- and double your entire net worth
Adani took a decade to increase his personal wealth by 41 times
The Poor, The Middle Class, The Upper Middle Class - they have no such master multiplier
The Poor become middle class with 15–16 years of education, a score of examinations, huge debt by their families or subsidies by the taxpayer and finally get a decent job and slowly move to low income or middle class
It takes 20–25 years for a generational transition and that too for the luckier ones
The Middle Class become upper middle Class by Shrewd Investments, Improved Skill Sets and Better opportunities
The Son of an Average B.A Father working as a Clerk who managed an IIT Seat is an example
Takes 20–25 years here too
From Upper Middle Class to Rich and Rich to Super Rich
That's entirely about Paper
Stock Options (Paper) Equities (Paper) Derivatives (Paper) Futures (Paper) Debentures (Paper) Paper can take you from rich to super rich or upper middle class to rich in a tenth the time it takes you to reach there with salaries and bonuses
That's why so many people talk of Billions and Millions today
Most of them hold paper
The Paper may a Gem of an investment but may also be a bloated whale carcass of an massively overvalued entity
Once you are rich - you become richer only because of PAPER
You sell Daddys Land for ₹50 Crore, you become rich
Yet that ₹50 Crore has to become ₹100 Crore only by being invested in Paper
Today the whole world revolves around paper and nobody knows how valuable the paper truly is
So nobody knows how big a Billionaire someone truly is
So frankly are the rich truly becoming richer or poorer?
Nobody knows
Meanwhile Middle Class or Low Income, they grow through Savings and Salaries and Term Investments and Gold and Land - all of which are clear transparent indicators of growth or prosperity"
After reading this article I could better appreciate reasons for inequality etc.I did this for every topic i studied.Hope this helps. You can reach out to me if you need any help🙂.

Original Post: April 28, 2024
Me and my son moved to US last year. I was a single mom for 16 yrs before I met and then married my husband. I saved up money so he can go to college. Where I came from, college is very important. We moved to a small town and my son found new friends. These friends in my opinion were not a good influence. I am used to polite and academically oriented kids back home. These new friends of his make fun of his books and his plans of going to college.
Before his HS graduation, me and my husband took him to several unis in the state so he could get a feel for which one he would like to go to. Then after he graduated from HS, I told him I have about $20k saved up for college. He said it is not going to fit because tuition is pretty expensive nowadays. I suggested he can just go to a community college 20 mins away and live at home to save money. He agreed and I gave him access to the fund (joint account).
Long story short, he did not enroll himself and instead started partying a lot and used the money on expensive dates with his gf. He moved out and stopped talking to me. I worked hard to save that up for more than a decade and I am upset that he wasted it in less than a year. Me and my husband went to his place and asked that he pay me back since it is specifically for college and not "fun money".
He called the police and filed harassment charges. I told the police to review the cctv footage because the whole time I was talking to him through his ring cam, I was calm and reasonable and my husband was just standing behind me not saying anything. I was outside the door talking, he never even opened the door to talk to me face to face. The police said there's nothing he can do if my son and his gf felt "harrassed", he can file a restraining order if he wants to.
Back home, this is unforgivable to treat your parent like this. But here in US, I was treated almost like a criminal. My sister in law said it is my fault for confronting him and that the money is his to spend since I made him a joint account owner. Am I wrong?
Edit: People cursing me because I said something about wanting to throw my chancla on my son's face, to be clear I have never laid my hands or my flip flops on him ever. But after what he did, my intrusive thoughts wants me to throw it but of course I won't. If he called the cops on me just because I want to talk to him, what more if I threw my flip flops on his face??
His relationship with me before moving to US was fine. He knew my struggle as a single mom and he always try to help me around the house. I was not strict at all he was free to go out with friends anytime. He was even thrilled to have a father figure and my husband always try to make him feel included in everything.

ManufacturerAny835: Lesson learned never give someone access to money unless you’re ok with them running away with it
OOP: He was a good boy before moving here. I thought he knew my struggles and how much I sacrificed to save money. I just thought he would never betray me like this.
dingdongsbtchs: Honestly I think a lot of parents don’t realize the depth of their children and forget that just because you think of them as one way doesn’t mean they don’t have other layers that can make them a different person. Sadly your son has found some less than savory friends to surround himself with and now he has to live with the decision he made. I honestly wouldn’t offer help for university again and would leave communication up to him. Also has there been any questions or discussion of potential drug use??
OOP: I don't know of any drug issue but since he did this to me, I am thinking maybe he has started doing drugs?

2workigo: The money is gone. And since he was a joint account holder and a legal adult, there’s nothing to be done except refuse to help him financially anymore. Let him figure it out on his own from now on. The friends he had will likely drift away now that he no longer has a fat bank account to fund their party lifestyle.

Update: May 10, 2024
Update on this post
I still have not heard from my son and I don't expect him to reach out. But his gf's mother has called me asking if my house is still open to him. I asked her why, it turns out he hasn't paid his share of the last month's rent and his gf had to pay it for him.
I said it is not my problem and he is not welcome anymore in my house since he is an adult. The gf's mom said "what kind of mother would not extend help to his teenage son?". She further insulted me and said now she knows why he left me.
At this point I really don't care anymore. I tried to help him get a good start in life but he wasted it. Aside from the $20k, he lived rent free in the house, free food, free phone, car, gas money, and I pay all the utility bills and his health insurance. All I asked is that he focus on his studies. Finish at least an associate's degree so he can get a decent job and be fully independent from me asap.
For some who asked why college is so important to me, as an immigrant, we are held under certain standards. We have to prove to USCIS that we will not become a public charge -- meaning we won't rely on any government aid. I want him to be able to be a good immigrant and become productive. I don't even know if he can become a citizen if he makes below poverty income. I was just trying to make sure he gets to live a good life.
Some of you asked if he even wanted go to to college. Back when we were in our home country, he begged me to pls send him to college no matter what.
P.S. The harrassment charge was closed for lack of evidence of harrassment, a lot of what he said were lies.
Edit: Another thing that gave me chills was when he moved out it was the middle of the night and me and my husband were both asleep. My son left the front door hanging open (I saw it in the camera). We live in a small town but there's a lot of crime in our area, someone could have gone in and done something bad.

uarstar: Isn’t your son 18? So you not charging him rent and covering his expenses is literally your duty as a parent.
OOP: 19, actually turned 20 already a week ago.
Andr0meD0n: Now the only money he should get from you is coins in his cup and some cold McDonald’s fries. I don’t mind if my kids live with me forever, they just have to do something, anything.
OOP: Yeah, I just really wanted him to do something to not be considered a 'public charge' by USCIS. Community college here in my town is just $5k/25 credit hours. They offer trade programs aside from associate's. That $20k would have gone a long way considering I was paying for everything else plus allowance and his salary from a part time job.
No_Scarcity8249: He didn’t live free. You were supposed to be supporting him. You doing what you are legally required to do isn’t some favor. You paying his health insurance and providing what you are supposed to isn’t something he got “free”. That is expected and required if all parents.
OOP: Most parents kick their kids out the moment they turn 18 or make them get a full time job. I continued providing for him and planned on doing so until he was able to stand on his own but since he did that he won't get any more support from me.

SnooWords4839: His GF's mom has no right to bitch you out.
Your son left, spend his college fund and now has to figure out how to adult.
You do not owe him anything at this point.
bluedreamer62: Some people just have to learn the hard way, his gf probably had a good time with him spending his college fund now 5hat it’s gone the fun is over. So comes the reality.

2024.05.17 05:34 DopeEspeon Bonuses as a business analyst

Those who get bonuses as Business analysts, what type of work do you do? Do you get enterprise agreement guaranteed salary raises as well ? How much % of salary do you get as a bonus? In my current company I'm aware that some admin /clerical staff and some analysts get bonuses but I don't actually know what arrangements are in place as i also havent had any discussions on bonuses with my boss. I've been in my job for half a year. So far my boss has said I've done a good job. Is it reasonable to ask about the bonus structure in the job after the one year mark ? If so, what's a reasonable amount as % of salary ?

2024.05.17 05:22 sliceofpear Boris Yeltsin destroyed the USSR just because he was impressed with the candy selection at a Houston supermarket

I stumbled across this long passage by Lev Sukhanov, Yeltsin's assistant at the time, from his book "3 years with Boris Yeltsin". The events described occurred in September 1989 and I've recited the passages below:
“When we were already returning to the airport, the devil pushed us to take a look at a typical American supermarket.
It was called Randall's Supermarket. From our group, only Boris Nikolaevich and I had never been to this kind of trading establishments.
Moreover, this was not a metropolitan, much less a New York store and, according to our standards, a very “ordinary” provincial one. If, of course, Houston can be considered a province.
Getting off the bus, I began to look for a crowd of people and something similar to our queues. However, there was no queue — neither around nor in the store itself.
It was a one-story building made of light metal structures. Naturally, none of the service personnel knew about our arrival and therefore there could be no talk of any “showing off”. An ordinary day, an “ordinary” assortment, “ordinary” visitors...
I was immediately struck by the abundance of light. And in general, the color scheme of everything was so bright and impressive that it felt like we were descending into the depths of a kaleidoscope.
The abundance of flowers was also mesmerizing - juicy, vibrant, as if just cut from a flower bed. Moreover, the flowers were not for sale, but as a decorative element.
As soon as we entered the supermarket, they called someone from the administration. From somewhere in the belly of the utility rooms appeared a very handsome young man in a snow-white shirt, neatly combed and, of course, smiling. It was the chief administrator. We introduced ourselves and said that we would like to find out about the work of the store.
When we walked along the rows, our eyes didn’t know where to stop. I could guess different things, but what I saw in this supermarket was no less amazing than America itself.
Some of us started counting the types of hams. We lost count.
I remembered our sausage shop on Krasnaya Presnya, where back in 1963 you could buy “Brunswick”, “Stolichnaya”, “Tambov”, “Uglich”, “Krakov” and a few other types of sausages. At that time, I thought this was the top of human dreams and that the first signs of communism hatched. To be fair, over the years, the store’s shelves began to empty and now only memories of its bright past remained. I remembered that Soviet store and compared it with this one in Houston, and realized that the abundance to which Khrushchev promised to lead us had passed us by.
At that moment (in Houston), all 300 Soviet research institutes and departments, whose job was to point to the advantages of socialism over capitalism could be trying to convinced me, but their efforts would be pointless.
The American reality, on the example of this supermarket, looked 100 times more convincing than any Soviet theories. Sure, not by bread alone a man lives... Not by sausage alone, not by cheese alone...
By the way, have you seen red, brown, lemon-orange cheese? How many types of cheese do you think we've seen in Houston? What about ham? All this unimaginable delicacy that everyone can try right in the store and decide — is it worth spending dollars on?
We couldn’t count the names of sweets and cakes, couldn’t grasp their variety of colors and their appetizing attractiveness with our eyes.
And although I am trying to convey my impressions, I understand that this is just a pathetic attempt, because the word is powerless before the reality of what that American store could offer.
Occasionally, I glanced at Yeltsin and noticed that it was a difficult test for him. And when a woman with a trolley caught up with him, on top of which a little boy was sitting, Boris Nikolaevich, apologizing, began to question her.
Does she often go to this store? It turned out, only on Saturdays.
Is your family big? 3 people: she, husband and child.
What is your family income? The woman explained that she was temporarily not working and lived on her husband’s salary, $3,600 a month.
Yeltsin asked how much she usually spends on food? It turned out that this family was spending about $170 on food for a week. From Saturday to Saturday. She still paid rent, insurance...
In the vegetable section, we were literally shocked by the quality of the produce.
A radish the size of a large potato was illuminated by bright light, and water was scattered onto it from small “spirits.”
Radishes were literally dazzling, and next to them were onions, garlic, eggplants, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers.
You want smoked eel — here.
Would you like lamprey? Or is your liver accustomed to sturgeon and oysters? Pineapples, bananas…
And at the confectionery section, one can could stand for hours: it probably surpasses Hollywood in terms of entertainment. A huge cake representing a hockey arena awaited the customer on a stand. The player figures were made of chocolate. A real work of art, and most importantly — accessible, quite accessible.
In general, this was a hypertensive topic. For Boris Nikolaevich and me, visiting the supermarket was a real shock.
As I am writing this book, my wife today (September 1991) went to the store to buy milk at 7 am, but there were queues. Queues are everywhere: you have to stand for 2 days to buy sugar. And this is here — in Moscow, in the second half of the 20th century, 73 years after the Great Revolution. At the time, when, according to Khrushchev’s calculations, we should all already be living under communism. Or maybe what we had built in the USSR is the true communism?
At the exit from the American supermarket, the girl sitting at the cash register didn’t not have to count anything. In her hands, she held a small device that resembled a hair dryer, which she quickly ran over the price code on the packages. After this operation, the price appeared on the computer cash register screen, the customer paid and could freely pass through the electronic turnstile. Well, what else could be simpler and smarter than such a system?
When we left the supermarket, the administrator gave us a present: a huge plastic bag with the packs of food from this store.
I fully believe that it was after Houston (after visiting the supermarket), on the plane, that Yeltsin’s last faith in his Bolshevik way of thinking finally collapsed.
Perhaps, in those moments of spiritual turmoil, the decision to leave the Communist party and join the struggle for supreme power in Russia irrevocably matured in him.”
It was then that Yeltsin realized that all the stories of “international journalists” about American workers who allegedly were dying in hellish poverty and dreamed only about moving to the USSR, all these stories were nothing more than propaganda. Even the party “elites” did not know that.
I know the dissolution of the USSR was much more complicated than one person, but this alcoholic piece of shit destroyed the lives of millions of people and set the history of humanity down a rapidly destructive path just because he was amazed by some brands of ham and tinsel. To Yeltsin being able to chose from a thousand brands of mass-produced highly processed junk food that's all owned by one conglomerate was more important than maintaining his country. Fuck Gorbachev but especially fuck Yeltsin, at least Gorbachev pretended to care about his people and communism while Yeltsin sold his country to a handful of oligarch thugs just because he thought there's no greater tragedy than being able to purchase 10 different brands of processed garbage.
Imperialism would have been able to disintegrate the Soviet Union, had the Soviets not destroyed themselves, had those responsible for the strategies and tactics and for the country's political and government policies not destroyed the country. In other words, socialism did not die from natural causes: it was a suicide, socialism was murdered.

2024.05.17 03:59 learn2tech11 Is this the most efficient debt plan for -$97k in mid-30s?

TLDR; $97k debt, will I ever get out of it? Is this plan efficient?
I am well aware I put myself in this situation & being stupid as hell. I grew up very poor & no one taught me the value of finances. Raised by a single parent who has not been able to help me financially in any aspect since I was 15. I have crawled out of probably $15k+ CC debt in the last few years, so I have made a dent. To think it was worse than it is now is so embarrassing but here I friggen am. Not making an excuse, just context of how I’ve only recently started really making myself financially literate. Everything I’ve figured out is from YouTube and some webinars my work offered through Fidelity. I am 34 years old and only in the last couple years have made okay money. I want to make sure I have the best plan to tackle my debt the quickest, and if not any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Total debt: $97,443.47
CC #1--- $968.57 Min payment $35; interest 27.24% CC #2--- $9,212.65 Min payment $262; interest 23.15% Car Loan --- $11,630.16 Min payment $472, projected pay off 8/2026; interest 7.63% (this was refinanced last year) Personal Loan #1--- $6,447.60 Min payment $396, projected pay off 12/2025; interest 14.12% Personal Loan #2--- $2,879.49 Min payment $120, projected pay off 12/2026; interest 13.98% Student Loans --- $66,305 **currently finishing my Master’s degree in hopes my salary will be more lucrative in the next 3-5 years, the remaining semesters should add roughly $20k**
Rent: $1,150 Electric (Heat+Hot Water): $120 (it’s usually closer to $100 but I like to add the cushion for wintesummer months, whatever the difference is each month I roll into my CC #1 on top of the min payment) Internet: $50 (this was recently cut down by switching providers, lowest package) Cell: $109.23 (lowest I can make it) Car Insurance: $114 Home Security $10 – I live alone, so this is a non-negotiable Gym: $60 – I go 5x a week for spin/group classes for mental health so also a non-negotiable. Streaming Services: $22 (taking advantage of student discounts)
~TOTAL MONTHLY MINIMUM BILLS: $2,850~
Salary just over $75k. After insurance premiums, 401k, HSA net pay is $1,960 bi-weekly. Current 401k contribution: 6% …after company contributions and matching it is a total 15.5% annually. My total 401k is $65,000 which is below that age 35 goal of “should be 2x your salary” per Fidelity so I would like to not lower my contribution if that’s the smart thing to do?? HSA is maxed out for a single person which covers all of my medications with some to spare so I have some emergency buffer $ there
I have split all my bills in half, so every pay day I have roughly the same budget: $1960 - $1425 = $535 left over every other week. On the months there are 3 paydays, I take that 3rd paycheck and put it entirely towards debt. I receive a bonus each year usually around $4k after taxes, that has gone entirely to CC debt last 2 years, will continue until CC is gone then move to those personal loans.
I usually take that $535 left over after bills, and keep $400 in checking for $200/week food/gas/house needs. The remaining $135 I put on top of the min payment on CC 1 until paid off, then will do that to CC 2. If I don’t spend all $200, I put it towards the CC at the end of each week.
I have about $600 in a HYSA. It grows at a snails pace, but at least it's above $0. I have left 2 paid off CC’s open for emergencies, the cards are in my freezer so I truly can not use them. The other paid off CC’s I have closed those accounts.
My credit was in the low 500's not too long ago thus my atrocious interest rates. I am finally up to the low "average" range.
Are there any pieces I should improve? Thank you if you took the time to read this...I really, really appreciate it.

First post in this subreddit. :)
I'm currently completing prerequisite courses to get into a 2-year Associate CLS program at my local community college. I was wondering what I should expect during/after I finish the program, plus any advice is welcome!
Some specific questions I have are:
Should I transfer my Associates into a BS in my major? Is there a major salary difference?
How challenging is it to get jobs out-of-state? Can the lab I work at during clinicals help me with the process?
Thanks in advance! Can't wait to get started in this industry. :D
