QUACK GRASS, the only plant that will survive 6 nuclear holocausts, 3 asteroid collisions and a super volcano eruption. Stress less dear cockroaches you will have quackgrass.
Quack grass. I had no idea what the hell it was until I moved to south carolina. If an atomic bomb went off and decimated all life quack grass and cockroaches would survive, no doubt about it. Quack grass is the biggest pain in the ass I have ever encountered...well bamboo would be a close 2nd.
Quack grass looks like this ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️. There is next to nothing you can do to get rid of it. If it hides underneath rocks or bricks or edging. My friend bought a home that was easily neglected for 20 years the quackgrasd was so thick with the runners and rhizomes that when we got it I'm a four foot strip by 9 inches wide it was nearly a hardened 10 inches thick and weighed around 45 pounds.
You can't simply pull it out. Don't do it don't do it. This requires an art and even this has error. I found that if any piece particle or molecule of this plant is left behind it just spawns another assh*le plant. These plants also have a throwing arm. It grows a branch off of its main body long loooooong arm, grows easily a foot in one day and it will pitch itself into a garden bed eventually landing on the ground. Then it's little hell spawn easily take out their concrete jack roots and have no problem compromising the hardest pickaxe like soil. The driest part of my yard robbed of due to the property water that strips this area of the nutrients the other parts enjoy, is no problem for quack grass. Hydrophobic soil on this end of my yard not too lousy for the population of this parasite.
So there has been only two ways to kill this sucker that I have been able to find. It has been years in the making. Trying out different methods and there are only small periods of time when it works. These plants adore the hottest places of your yard. The black stepping stones or bricks in the boundary. Stepping stones. Concrete patio pads. Underneath sidewalks. It will burrow under these things and develop its root system underneath. It seems to be its preference. It enjoys 6 or more hours of sunlight. It's roots grow horizontally but also vertically. The vertical roots look jagged and zig zag enhancing their ability to be broken into zombie particles that grow many from the pieces.they have little cross wires that sprout up multiple plants. They go deep and wide and you just can't extract them.. impossible.
So I got a flame thrower and a propane tank..its not a flame thrower but it has a long shift with a fitting that blows fire out of its tip. People in the last few years in appropriate areas with ample rain (not in fire prone areas) and using tons of precautionary measures taken yoy take yoyr torch and you can essentially cook them alive. After a week it will die like it does for winter months. This is when you dig the soil up around it flip the soil and you burn the under side also the cavity where the soil was extracted. Then wait two weeks. Do this same treatment for any emerging ones and repeat. When you are satisfied the next plan of attack is to get a kill all. Saturate this plant at highest sun, during the day on especially hot days. Saturate them. Try to be careful to not afflict the neighboring plant life. Kill all works by saturating the exposed parts these go into the plants cells and stops them from being able to absorb water and nutrients. Even so I have seen some think themselves into existence..
You could remove the soil down to 16 inches in the area they have been spotted and if any cement or bricks heat absorbing material is around dig it up and set aside..it loves rocks.. you get rid of this dirt. Comdem it. Or solar sanitize the dirt..put it in wet black garbage bag for an entire.summer in the hot sun. I'd triple bag it because these weeds are survivors. I would also use a junk cake pan to cook the soil over a bonfire for a few minutes. Larger piece of metal will work to stream lime the process. Male sure the center if the soil reaches 220 degrees. Adding water to the soil will definitely going to aid in steaming it dead don't saturate but squirt bottle wetting while it is cooking .them.you want to screen the soil. Get any parts out of the soil and throw in burn barrel or fire pit.
The best method also kills your lawn grass but has really controlled the problem..I used kill all and before it could really emerge I saturated it and the area surrounding it with kill all. I sprayed any area I could remember it being.. it went down by 80% yet it has those underground channels and arms so it doesn't always afflict the entire plant. A surfactant ingredient (make sure it is safe to do so with your specific product) surfactants emulsify the poision and they adhere more to the plant..where it runs into the ground or evaporates quickly. Adding a surfactant can keep that demon weed choked out a little longer.
Does anyone else have any success with this terror? I'd take a lawn of regular bushy crabgrass over this any day. A lawn of dandelions would be a godsend over any of this type of parasitic grass. I wonder if taking a tazer to the plant would kill it. I mean it is worth a try no? This weed can be cooked by a torch flame thrower burned to a crisp, the soil underneath can be cooked to a good 375 degrees in a matter of seconds, and by some ungodly supernatural miracle from hell this weed can will itself into existence off of a parboiled sandgrain particle of itself. I dare say I found something besides a tumor that can be of organic biological materials that doesn't really die? It's top bad it isn't a delicious food that could be sent to the most barren and inhospitable locations on the planet where people are starving to death and we could change their lives with this plant.
Quack grass will be one of those plants that will be one of the major considerations before buying my next house. That is just how bad it is. I bet if it grows along the foundation of a home it is also doing damage to the foundation. This is almost like the habit of the plant, it's very nature is to find the fractures and weak spots and overgrow and stuff as many roots as possible through it until it crumbles.
I haven't seen much in terms of experimentation with this parasite plant but I imagine there are a lot of qualities that could be exploited for our benefit. I donr know it's full range but there are qualities of this plant that could help on a lot of applications. Erosion, it would be more than ideal it has almost a rebar kind of root system and it just keeps sending.more and more roots along these pathways. Nit breaking u9 the soil but holding it in place. It is the ugliest looking plant there has wver been.
Any ideas on what I could do? The spring poisioning worked better than anything this far. The burning seems to have eliminated new emergent particles I will know more as the time.goes on.
Any experts on this type of quack grass? Can i kill it without killing the good plants or good grass?

Majesty Palm Brown Spots
I purchased 2 majesty palms about a month ago, one indoor and one for outside. The indoor one has done great, some brown tips which it had when I bought it, but otherwise looks healthy to me with new fronds opening up. My outdoor one however developed brown spots/fully brown leaves, and the new fronds have barely opened if at all… both received the same water amount/schedule in the same soil. Is the outdoor one suffering from sun/heat damage? I’ve now moved it inside to the same room to hopefully save it. Any help is appreciated, they’re both pretty big and I want to keep these guys healthy! (1st pic is the outdoor’s brown spots, 2nd is my fully indoor plant).

2024.06.01 03:50 Low_Addendum_3607 Mentally disabled adult child breaking laws/rules. What are we suppose to do?

Hi yall, I live with my mom & my older sister, who has a moderate learning disability. Her level of development came to a halt somewhere between a 2nd grader & a 4th grader but she is 34 years old. Does not really comprehend money too well, struggles counting coins, does understand consequences, is very very easily influenced & does not have a strong sense of right and wrong. In high school she befriended a boy who asked her to take money from her mom or dad’s wallet, and see if she could find any mp3 players for him & she did it. After she was caught because I was missing my mp3 player & my parents were missing 80 bucks, she confessed as if nothing should or could have been wrong. This was the first major incident and there have been some in between BUT recently, she signed herself up for Facebook dating, met someone and started hanging out at the park with him. One day she comes home clearly high on something & stayed up all night, my mom questioned her but she denied that she did anything. Shortly after she developed a foot infection & my mom had to pack her a hospital bag, ended up finding METH pipes & baggies in her room… when confronted she said “yeah” like it wasn’t anything special. She hasnt been allowed to hang out with this guy since getting out of the hospital, but she asked my mom today to take her over to his house to “hang out”. We tried explaining to her that she is not allowed to do that because she has shown up she doesn’t make the right decisions there. She got frustrated and told us she was going to go on “a walk”. My mom has her location & shortly after she left her location showed her on the freeway heading to the next town over, my mom texted her and my sister told her that she went and asked the neighbors to give her a ride (they have offered her rides before and she’s asked them as well but never to another town) and she was on her way back to this guys house….
There are no resources out there to help my mom, what the hell is she suppose to do? How can we keep her safe ? She could lose her state assistance if they find out she’s getting high, how do you punish a 30+ yr old who doesn’t even understand that what they are doing is wrong ??

This is my 3rd summer in our new-to-us home. Located in upstate NY. I'm very much a rookie and unsure of how to really develop a healthy lawn. As you will see in the photos, the lawn is very thin. It feels very dry too. In the spring when we get regular rain the lawn looks much better, not a great turf by any means, but it gradually turns to this once the rain is less frequent. The last 2 summers I have dethatched and pulled up a lot of dead grass and then overseeded. I saw very little development from this, but the lawn looked less choked out by dead grass.
The lawn gets no shade and is in the sun all day. I would water religiously at dusk for half an hour which definitely helped keep the lawn green compared to a small part I did not water would turn all brown through July and August. Density of the grass seems to be unchanged after Spring regardless of watering. I mow once a week at the 2nd to highest setting during the summer & 2x a week in the spring when its really growing. The lawn has very sandy/silty soil for several feet and then clay.
My thoughts are that the lawn has terrible water retention and due to this the organic matter in the lawn is definitely lacking. I'm afraid to use any fertilizers since the lawn seems weak and I'm afraid to burn it with the wrong product. Most lawns in the neighborhood have a similar appearance except for those with substantial shade or a sprinkler system.
I'm considering spreading top soil and/or peat moss throughout to get a layer of organics and water holding material on the lawn and repeat this for a few years. A total overhaul doesn't seem in the cards for me. I appreciate any guidance or suggestions.
Products I use:
Fall - Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Lawn Food
Spring - Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action
June - Grub Killer (we have moles and this seems to help?)
Scotts Northeast grass seed / Sta Green grass seed

How to make the middle bit grow like the corner bit (grass/lawn)?
Having adhered to No-Mow May, this is how my little patch of grass/lawn now looks.
Any advice/thoughts on how to help the grass grow more vigorously in the middle?
For context - this is the 2nd attempt at turning what was a gravel driveway into a lawned area (2nd time I added X2 ton bags of top soil). The original attempt started well, but by year 2 there were huge patches, it was rock hard, and just needed restartinf. I seeded again in April 2023 (after rotovating and adding TS), so it's had a year - I'm thinking I'll scarify in the autumn and resow? What else would you recommend? It gets sun almost all day and gets quite hot in summer.
Thank you for your time.

2024.05.31 14:32 PeriwinkleFoxx What’s going on with my Hoya kerrii (Sweetheart plant)??

What’s going on with my Hoya kerrii (Sweetheart plant)??
After a very thorough rinsing it still has those white patches. They’re completely smooth, no raised bumps, and if I try to gently scratch it off, it doesn’t budge.
2nd pic shows the back which has a deep indent, I’m assuming some sort of scar?
3rd pic is a closeup of the white patch
4th pic is a closeup of the roots (which I also rinsed gently) because I know they’re often the best place to look to find what’s wrong
Last pic is the very day I got it, which was May 17. A bit blurry but you get the idea, the white patch hasn’t gone away from rinsing, this whole time I thought it was just some sort of residue buildup from its time in the grocery store plant area. But it won’t even go away with gentle scratching of the surface
About the care: not much to share since I haven’t had it long, but it’s been in a soil mixture I’ve been having success with for my succulents and cactus (essentially, drains very well but not to the point of drying up within a day or two). It’s basically a store bought house plant soil that I mixed extra perlite into and make sure to break it up every now and then to encourage airflow
As for watering, I’ve watered it only once or twice so far but I haven’t even had it for half a month yet and as shown in the last pic of the day I got it, it doesn’t seem to have gotten worse from what I’ve been doing but it’s also definitely not getting better
It wasn’t getting much natural sunlight because my apartment sucks in terms of letting natural light in. So I’ve been keeping it next to my heavily planted fish tank which has a light specifically made for encouraging the aquatic plant growth. I’ve had a common snake plant (sansevieria) right next to it that’s been doing really well with the same soil mixture and light levels
My plant ID/care app seems to think the Hoya has powdery mildew, but after looking through pics of that, even on the same kind of plant, it just doesn’t seem like that’s the issue? Considering it’s completely flat and textureless
Help lol I’ve never kept a Hoya before and I’m at such a loss even after doing some research. I don’t even know what my next step should be, I haven’t repotted it yet and it’s been out of soil for a couple hours

2024.05.31 14:04 Sunshine_MIND__ Frustrated with coworker- burnt out and need help

Frustrated/Burnt out
l am seeking guidance to overcome my frustration. Our school's recent MTSS meeting has placed students in tiers for September, and the RS assigned to our 2nd and 3rd graders has doubled my workload. However, I am determined to find ways to effectively support all 50 additional students especially the 10 who transitioned from tier 2 to tier 3 towards the end of the academic year. To preface, students receiving intervention should not go from less support to most intense. There are certain cases that fail to respond to intervention but that goes further into the process not 10 students collectively! I got a little snippy in our meeting when they didn’t agree the students should move tiers but we are very data driven and there was regression. I want to talk to my principal and supervisor for guidance because I’m tired of working so hard but others aren’t held accountable. What should I do to express my concerns?

2024.05.31 06:05 sad_panda91 Life is a chemical reaction

"Life is a chemical reaction",
said Grand Council Albert, the Forty-third - and I have to add right here that they explained that they studied us thoroughly and developed a name to inspire respect and awe based on naming conventions that we gave to our leaders throughout history. Also, they had to specifically develop sounds we can actually hear as they have an entirely different concept of names and verbalization of words, they said. However, they didn't seem to have quite gotten there with their research, as personally, I found that name to be quite silly and phoned in, but who am I to judge, I am not a transcendental being from space. Maybe some transcendental intern had a bad day, his deity girlfriend broke up with him and he just wasn't in the right headspace for "figure out cool sounding name for human contact on Tuesday". Anyway, so Grandmaster Flash furtherly declared:
"Just as any other chemical reaction, it never ends, it just transforms. Matter never just seizes to exist, even when it crumbles to tiny ashes and gets spread through the winds."
I noticed we are getting the dumbed down version. Our great, infinite potential, manifested in front of us, thinks we are stupid.
"And as any chemical reaction, it needs the right conditions. The right temperature, the right pressure, the right molecules to be present. And the better the conditions, the faster the chemical reaction. Life, as it turns out, is what your chemists call an exotherm reaction. From the perspective of the rest of the universe, it explodes. "
They now proceeded with a very complicated way of saying "actually, everything explodes.", it just seems to be relative. Some things just explode very, very slowly. He also basically said "actually actually there is no slowly", but that's where they kind of lost me. The only thing I perceive right now that literally nothing else is on TV.
"Furthermore, the conditions for this chemical reaction to occur are quite rare - your scientists might have gathered that much by now. "
Our human representative does a shy nod, like a sixth grader just got berated in front of class. We did a vote and decided on the President of Denmark of all places, plus a random assortment of scientists and celebrities. I am so sorry future generations who read about this in their history books, but he is not doing a very good job. We are actually embarrassing ourselves in front of the beings. If they asked me, I would have sent Snoop Dogg as front runner. So yeah anyway, we figured we were quite rare.
"So rare indeed, that in about 80% of all possible universes, within one of its cycles, the likelihood of this chemical reaction occurring, without outside intervention, is between 0 and 2. We decided to not tell you how many times that happened in your universe. In addition to that, the conditions on your planet were extraordinarily good. Your lifeform is developing faster than, again, 80% of the times this reaction occurs in different contexts. And the effect is exponential due to the exotherm nature of the reaction. You don't just outrun your peers, you sprint away from them." - I think they are being deliberately vague with the numbers by the way, but I like that we are cool. - "That's why you aren't finding any other lifeforms on far out planets. It is incredibly unlikely that other lifeforms in your universe, if they exist, can send out enough energy into space to be measurable by your instruments. Also, your technology can't observe the particles that other universes consist of yet. The higgs boson was one of them, specifically engineered to be detectable by you. It was one of our probes."
I think they keep the actually interesting information from us to not freak us out. Like restrainedly petting a goat at the zoo. Also, they referred to us as every species batched together, as one lifeform, which was interesting. They are probably disappointed that we didn't send the dolphins.
"The organ of your lifeform that you call homo sapiens, or humans - similar organs rarely are found in lifeforms of other universes - has developed a nervous system that optimizes for what you call curiosity. And it is ever accelerating. However, we want to emphasize that the other organs of your lifeform are similarly developed, some are even much more developed than you are, due the their much higher cycling rates. They just optimized for exponential reproduction instead, or otherwise found a niche in being extremely specified to their immediate environments. And - since the exponential growth of humans - existing together with you. If the human organ of this lifeform doesn't perish beforehand, you will develop a more symbiotic relationship with the other organs of your lifeform, as you will discover many beneficial synergies that you will identify as outvaluing short term destructive exploitation."
Yeah, poor dodos.
"Your specific form of optimization makes it very similar to ours. Your chemical reaction just started later. We had the opportunity to develop for long enough to communicate from our universe with yours by sending digital probes through black holes."
Again, they went on a bit of a tangent that basically boils down to these probes being flying math equations that can actually do stuff. Go figure.
"We are communicating to you through a process you might call double mirroring. On the one hand, my nervous system is stimulated through the manifold of measurement devices on our probe. I can feel this planets ground on my feet, and the streams of nitrogen forming convections in your atmosphere. On the other hand, you shouldn't be able to perceive the probe itself, but a projection it generates so you have a visualization that helps you relate to us and feel welcomed to communicate. We designed the image to resemble you, to be inviting and approachable. Our actual matter wouldn't be perceivable by your eyes either way. We designed it to be abstract enough to not be comparable to any of the variations of your organ. We don't want to incite internal conflicts with some variants of humans claiming more, or less, similarity to us. Our calculations say, curiously, that if your senses were able to perceive our matter, we would look similar to you, within standard deviation. You would probably compare us to one of your characters in mythological fiction or creatures from fables. Since the side effects of this are hard to predict, we opted for a more neutral approach."
He's right, if my ex's new boyfriend looks more like the transcendent being, I'll be so pissed.
"For long, we have debated if we should interfere with your development as to not accidentally encourage you to optimize for your perception of us. The potential learnings from a similar being from another universe would be invaluable for our research, we found it more beneficial to avoid interference and gather your unbiased findings at a later time."
So they are still going go Space Angel Uni, when does it ever stop!
"But by seeing me standing in front of you, you might have gathered, that our stance on this has changed. "
His voice changed too. I guess they learned some drama from us.
"Our society is confronted by an unforeseen event of a nature that you don't have the means to conceptualize yet. And it endangers our existence, among other destructive side effects."
Oh so they need our help?
"You can not help us. At least not yet. The chemical reaction of life in its variants on other universes is of a complexity, that even for us is still hard to confidently predict. You can compare it to how you only developed a crude measurement for the climate on your planet. We can calculate likelihoods of expected outcomes given certain metrics, but not the future. At least not yours. We are much closer to a conclusive model of the reaction that lead to our lifeform."
"Instead, we decided to attempt an acceleration in your development. Our linguists have designed a message in your words, that should increase your progress rate tremendously. It is just a crude caricature of the underlying technology, but for many of these concepts, again, you still are lacking the words to conceptualize them. We do this in the hope it will still increase your speed of progress so that you will develop fast enough to share your knowledge with ours, once it is of the necessary detail, before it is to late for us to benefit from it. We do this because the data from your universe could help us inform a decision to move forward, or inspire our scientist to device a solution. You have developed the most thorough documentation of this universe, even compared to other developed lifeforms of similar age. Our lifeform for example developed the habit of documentation rather late. We made much of our early progress through exploration of what you would call emotion, though it wouldn't quite capture the right connotation. In light of there still being a bit of a language barrier on our end, let's call it 'We were much more wavy'"
I told you mum it's not harmful.
"Still, we want to leave the decision with you, wether you want to hear our message to you - or not. We do not want to force this on you. Maybe our mere appearance here will inspire you enough to expedite progress, that is an unvoluntary side effect of our project, to which we preemptively apologize. We want you to understand, that we are in a dire situation. Furthermore, you regrettably don't have much time to make your choice. This broadcast requires an emount of energy transformation that dwarves even your wildest imaginations of future technologies. And even we can not maintain it for long. Our introduction was devised to gain your trust, and explain the basic functionality of our broadcast, so you don't perceive this as any divine or mythical event. Please stay calm, to me, this is just a very sophisticated version of what you would call mobile phone, used on a particularly large, thus energy intensive distance. I am a trained communicator of our society. We have just as much claim for divinity as you have. But to use some of your idioms, you might want to listen to your elders. As this cooperation might preserve you from a similar fate, or even help you overcome potential risks to your existence. So could you please, within the next 6 minutes and 35 seconds, communicate to us if you want to hear the rest of our broadcast?"
No please spare me with your forbidden knowledge, ancient being, I would love to keep doing the same stupid job for another 40 years, let's ignore infinite energy, it's so much more fun to come up with this stuff yourself. Get on with it! Optimized for curiosity, remember?
After a brief debate with his advisors, the president of Denmark nodded shyly again. Yes, we want to hear it.
"You have decided. So we will share our knowledge with you. Remember that our ability to communicate is limited, but we believe we found words that are logically interpretable by you. What you do with this, we are afraid, you will have to figure out on your own. This is the closest we got to verbalizing this concept within the constraints of your vocabulary."
I guess I better stop with the totally hilarious snark now.
"If you recall, we explained to you, that life is what you call a chemical reaction. Within this reaction, a nervous system was developed, evolving to be able to conceptualize an ever increasing complexity of thought. Early iterations of your lifeform, barely past the molecular stage, were what you'd name 'one-dimensional' in its extremely simplified version of thought. Barely reacting to their surroundings until, through evolution, the necessary sensory input devices where developed. Slowly but surely, some branches of that intelligence grew to be able to parse its location in 3D space, and act on instincts that were beneficial to their survival. The first organs of this lifeform emerged that you might call "animal". But due to the extremely fertile soil this planet offers for your particular lifeform, soon, your brain mutated to even conceptualize thoughts an order of magnitude more complex. A rare event even compared to other universes. You started to think in an extra dimension you sometimes call time. But I think many of you are debating, if this is the right word for it. You became very creative with describing this fact. Due to the challenge to observe this extra dimension, since your sensory systems mostly only operate in three dimensions, you developed the wildest fiction, countless mythologies, and anything you might call superstition now, and even fields more esteemed among some of you that are generally regarded as disconnected from the formerly mentioned attempts at verbalizing, in effect research the exact same phenomenon without even knowing it."
"As you might observe, it is a bit remarkable that your nervous system developed to work with four dimensional inputs, while your sensory organs only perceive 3. One particular genre of your fiction, one that claims to be more trustworthy than the others - well, actually, all of them do in a way, but I digress - has focused on the explanations that are perceivable by your 3 dimensional sensory organs, and base their predictions of the unperceivable fourth one on that. Since the 3 dimensions of sensory input are very common among humans, this resonates with many of you, to the point of claiming that only this approach can lead to truth. The other pieces of fiction explore it from an estimation of the fourth dimension and try to find a more holistic view, which due to the snapshotted nature of this approach is of more varying effectiveness than the first approach, especially when it comes to their predictions of the perceivables. You tend to rarely update these pieces of fiction, we assume for reasons of tradition, but there might a deeper meaning to this practice that we haven't yet discovered in our research on you. Some of the latter pieces of fiction, however, outperform the former in the area of the unperceivables. As you might agree, we won't disclose which one is closest to "the truth", as that probably would harm our endeavors in you reaching a higher state of progress. But most of the popular ones are not far off. Their particular choice of wording however is very questionable and up to interpretation, which lead to countless internal conflicts among you. At this point we want to take the time to inform you, that it is statistically much more beneficial to your progress, if you don't wage verbal or even physical wars based on the small inaccuracies every single one of your pieces of fiction or newfound ideologies inevitably include. Especially the ones developed early in what you would call a timeline, as they were written by members of your society that discovered this fourth dimension in their brains tragically early in some sense, before most of the others of your species, so they had to find ways to convey these concepts in images that were able to be understood by their contemporaries. You all had the right brain already, but not all of you had the right way of thinking. To find solace in your existence, a crucial element of progress, you might want to start looking for the similarities these pieces of fiction all have in common."
"You use the ability to conceptualize in this dimension to extend your lacking sensory organs through pattern recognition. You don't feel just the pain that your fleshy vessel can induce upon you, you feel the pain of other members of your lifeform, through process you call relation. Many of you extend this to other organs of your lifeform even, but still many of your individuals capability to relate is much more limited. Even so, many of you can even imagine the emotions of members of your species that lived thousands of years in the past, from your current point of view. And the members that you attribute with the term "being alive" share your knowledge using your specifically engineered communication channels with members of your species across the entire planet in a commendable speed, given the age of your lifeform. At a similar stage, we were developing a form of nonverbal communication that you might discover a version of at some point too. It was much slower, but orders of magnitude more detailed. We moved past the problem of miscommunications a long, long time ago. To us, the extension of our senses through technology came much later, relatively speaking. Some of your channels of communication are so fast, that you are beginning to perceive this technology as an artificial version of your intelligence. Which you are close to in a sense of 'quickly iterating through past inputs', but as you will soon find, having instrinsic curiosity and therefore constantly generating novelty, a crucial part of your intelligence, is much trickier to reproduce artificially."
"You have become so creative with your interpretations of this fourth dimension in which you not long ago started to think in - in your stories you were wizards, and heroes, and angels, and devils, brilliant inventors and archetypes of motherly comfort, safety, strength, leadership and many many more."
"One of your most prominent pieces of fiction describes your transition from 3 dimensional thinking to 4 dimensional thinking as the transition from Garden Eden to Earth, through the forbidden fruit of knowledge. You gave this one a name that is remarkably close to the truth, but nevertheless, the openness of your verbalization technique still left you inconclusive on the meaning of this. You imagined it as living in perfect bliss, and/or ignorance, as you might discover are two words closer in meaning than you might understand. You describe this as 'fallen angels' which were nothing more but stories of former living members of your society who left their state of ignorant bliss, and started to question the validity of not only this state of being, but the entirety of their surroundings as well. Things that earlier iterations of your nervous system never bothered with. This lead to an equal amount of pain and discovery. We assume evolution took a bit of a backwards approach to developing your sensory organs in your case to expedite the discovery part, as that turned out to be a tremendous evolutionary advantage, even with keeping the 'bug' in the system that most of you are constantly confused about the meaning of your existence. To keep it short, you do this, because this is what your lifeform mutated into through evolution, through a constant optimizing process. You do this because you can. And because you can, you have to. Evolution is very good cutting out unnecessary mutations. You are still curious because you evolved to be doing just that. You are not hairless monkeys fending for themselves and their fleshy bodies anymore. You are the intelligence of an entity called life. And you should start behaving in such a way."
"Another thing you have to understand is that the universe that you are observing is actually the universe that has formed in the confines of what you call brain. You find consensus through debate, agree on models, and thereby create close replicas of the actual universe you find yourself in. But the universe that you are perceiving is so far constrained to every single individual brain of yours. Every one of you is creating a version of this replica and does their best attempt at verbalizing their observations in this mirage universe that is a creation of your almost infinite imagination. That's the root cause of your miscommunication. You all severely underestimate the difference in universes your peers are perceiving. The overlap is only created through your constant debates, temporary agreements and continuous iteration. But not a single one of you has an exact copy of the perceived universe of another. No scientist, no hippy, no preacher, no one. You are basically painting a picture of the actual universe you are in in your mind, and you are constantly adding your own version of detail, but thus far no one of you has achieved an exact copy of reality. This is a concept you might want to explore in your pursuit of inner peace. Your inner universe is just as infinite as the real one. But the great additional feature is, once we tell you how to do it, you can paint it however you want. I wanted to add a joke here about how I might be the result of the wild imagination of some of you, but again, I think this would have potential to cause conflict within your ranks, so if I were you, I would accept me as real. Again, statistically, it's beneficial for youasdakojfaj,zz.z.z.zz----........

2024.05.31 06:00 sad_panda91 [SF] Life is a chemical reaction

"Life is a chemical reaction",
said Grand Council Albert, the Forty-third - and I have to add right here that they explained that they studied us thoroughly and developed a name to inspire respect and awe based on naming conventions that we gave to our leaders throughout history, and they had to specifically develop the sounds as they have an entirely different concept of names and verbalization of words, they said. However, they didn't seem to have quite gotten there with their research, as personally, I found that name to be quite silly and phoned in, but who am I to judge, I am not a crazy transcendental being from space.
So far, the thing touching me most about this, as all channels have this on as a special broadcast and I am missing an episode of Dragon Ball.
"Furthermore, the conditions for this chemical reaction to occur are quite rare - your scientist might have gathered that much by now.
But the great additional feature is, we tell you how to do it, you can paint it however you want. I wanted to add a joke here about how I might be the result of the wild imagination of some of you, but again, I think this would have potential to cause conflict within your ranks, so if I were you, I would accept me as real. Again, statistically, it's beneficial for youasdakojfaj,zz.z.z.zz----........

2024.05.31 02:45 LivingRealistic5213 Do your job quests, kids.

Do your job quests, kids.
Ah, I was finally done with work. I figured I may as well log onto FF14 to do my dailies. I simply open up the game, don't even bother with ACT, because what's the point, right? I was about to move over to a different data center when I thought "With Dawntrail around the corner, I might as well get used to logging onto Dynamis, at least for my 4-man duties". And so I hop onto Marilith and open the Party Finder, as people tend to post on there for roulettes. Lo and behold; a party for all the 4-man daily roulettes with a tank spot. Perfect, as I am a PLD main.
"Doing all the 4 man roulettes, come join the fun! WARNING: I am new to healer sooooo... WE ARE ALL IN DANGER!!!" was the comment the host of the party, a SCH left. No worries, I think. I love helping newbies as a mentor wannabe, maybe I can deal with this, it can't be too bad! They just lack the confidence. I join, the greetings come out. I join a Mentor MCH and a Returner RDM/DRG player and, of course, the star of our show; A new-to-healing SCH.
I am truly excited by the prospect, as I want to help out.
We wait for everyone to be ready, grab their snacks, etc. and off we go.
Expert Roulette - Duty Pop: The Lunar Subterrane
Ah, the classic. I figure I should do bigger pulls from the start, since I have all of my cooldowns. So I W2W it, getting everything all the way to the end. So far so good, okay, not too bad. They casted Adloquium before I reach the end, I see Sacred Soil and think to myself "LET'S GO, THEY ARE DOING IT!". I pop Reprisal, Arm's Length and Rampart, drop Sheltron here and there and I'll be fine, we just need an Excog to be safe!
And then I see another Adloqium. And another one. And yet another Adloqium. No Excog, no Lustrate, not a single fairy skill, not even a Protraction for Heavens' sake! I am no SCH player, but I understand these skills (except for maybe Protraction lol) are the main playing cards in a Scholar's arsenal. I figure they don't know their skills very well yet, it's fine. It's a good thing Paladin has some amazing sustain capabilities. I pop almost all of my CDs on the first pull, wanting to avoid Clemency so they have a chance to learn. Somehow we survived the 1st pull. Off to the 2nd one, and I still go with the W2W, to check if I am wrong in thinking I didn't see any of those skills. I had Reprisal back, I had my Invul if needed. Indeed, every single cooldown was needed, even Divine Veil. Only Adlo is casted onto me. That when I notice there's no Eos out. Luckily, they brought her out before I got to say something.
I indirectly check to see if they are aware of their lack in healing ability usage
I simply ask if they want smaller pulls once I am at the first boss. We come through unscathed, but not without me having to use at least 3 CDs on the TBs.
The dungeon continues in a similar fashion with me struggling to manage my CDs and casting phase as well as I could so I can sustain myself. The second to last W2W pull almost kills me, luckily the RDM limit breaks the pack. Made sure to keep a close eye to them so I can give them some advice when we're out. I use everything I can on raidwides, I end up using multiple Interventions on the DPS to keep them alive, as they only use Succor for AOE healing. Yep, no Indomitability either. One thing they did witch is a good sign they are kinda learning is they used Expedience on the ant boss, on the quicksand attack.
Curious that they didn't use any of their other healing abilities, I try to delve deeper into their psyche. Maybe drop some tips in a friendly manner. There's another short snack break, so I lead with asking how they like the class.
Ah, a fellow tank enjoyer! Maybe if I loosely explain the usage of the abilities...
:(
I had no words. No Job Quests... That explains it, right? But, see, it doesn't. Sacred Soil is a skill you get from the Job Quests, so is Broil, which they used. Lustrate is one of the earliest Job Quest rewards, if I recall correctly, way before Sacred Soil. Meanwhile, Excogitation you obtain via leveling up. I try to play it off and right as I try to leave the party, they queue us in again. I felt bad leaving right there and then, so I go through with it.
Level 90 Dungeons Roulette - Duty Pop: Lapis Manalis
This dungeon. Being the 3rd to last in the expansion, it unfortunately syncs your ilvl down to 630, which by itself isn't a bad thing, BUT! When you have a healer that's struggling to keep you alive on Lunar because they don't use their skills, then it SUCKS. I was already kinda shocked by the revelation, so I couldn't focus well. There were multiple times I almost died and couldn't help but think "Thank the Gods I have Clemency!". The healer also died multiple times during boss fights. In fact they died very early on the final boss, so I kinda ended up using everything I had to keep everyone else alive through Raidwides and Stacks. The (now) DRG and MCH would of course use any healing had on themselves too, which I really appreciate, it helps everyone out!
please I beg you YoshiP never nerf PLD and WAR healing
We finished the big bad, I had about 1500 MP remaining from healing people with Clemency after the DPS check but hell yeah we did it! Dungeon was over. I honestly couldn't take this for anymore 4-man duties though, so I left. The MCH also left before me, as they knew it wasn't going to get any better.
I am glad the DPS were chill and good at their job, and I wish I could have taught the SCH how to use their skills maybe. Especially with being new at healing, maybe I should have been more pat-THEY ARE NOT NEW. I CHECKED THEIR LODESTONE PROFILE.
WHY?
They had SGE at 83, they had WHM at 44, that means they had spent at least SOME TIME HEALING. Oh and look! SMN at level 90, while they also seem to play casters primarily. The Arcanist split off is yet again the bane of my existence.
My dear Lala friend, if you end up reading this, know I am not angry at you, just disappointed. You obviously know how important job quests are. If this was a lower level dungeon, I'd have been fine but please, do your job quests, and read your tooltips if you are doing to do EXPERT roulette. May we meet again when you've practiced more.

Is it common for leaf props to grow multiple rosettes/stems? Is this echeveria crested?
I currently have 4 leaf props with baby plants and 3 out of 4 appear to have sprouted multiple stems/rosettes. The echeveria (I think a PVN but not certain) at first grew 1 rosette, but then started growing a second, smaller rosette on the side after I put it in soil. Now, the more I look at it, the more I am beginning to wonder if it's crested. I see what looks like a 3rd growth point starting to the left of the original center (opposite side of the 2nd rosette), though it's hard to capture all 3 in one photo. I've read that crested succulents often arise from damage to the plant, which causes multiple growth points. This particular echeveria leaf fell to the bottom of my purse and stayed there for a week before I found it. I'm wondering if maybe that damaged the leaf enough to cause this? Or is this just common for leaf props and maybe the leaves will revert to a more standard shape when it gets bigger?
I still have no ID for the 3 other leaves pictured here. I'm thinking some type of sedum? One has 1 stem. One has 2 stems. And one has 3 stems! Is this just common for certain types of succulents? They seem relatively healthy so I'm not really complaining. Just wondering if this is normal. This is my first time propagating from leaves only. I'd appreciate any insight. Also if these are big enough now for anyone to ID. Thanks!

2024.05.30 23:31 AffairesDePiasses My experience with Apollo support

Hi,
A few weeks ago, I asked on here what scooter I should purchase for my daily commute, especially hesitating between the new Apollo Air 2024 and the Segway Ninebot Max G2. Trying to be a little patriotic as a Canadian, I decided to go with the Apollo.
It was really great for the first few miles, however, after a few 5 km / 3 miles short trips, it started making a strange rattling noise when I used regenerative braking. On the same day it started, I had my first longer 25 km/15 miles trip, and by the end, the problem had become much worse, with the noise coming back almost every time I used either regular or regenerative braking or even when deceleration and accelerating again. EDIT: a video of the problem
Keeping in mind the scooter was a week old and had been driven for around 100km/65 miles, I immediately got in touch with support via chat and then switched to email : they were very responsive and had me do a few stuffs. In the end, they offered either to send me the parts they thought were at fault (the controller, that I felt wouldn't solve the problem), for which I'd have to pay shipment, or, since I wasn't far from Montreal, to drop my scooter at their repair center. I chose the 2nd option, and dropped my scooter there the next day. I was told I should expect to hear back within a week.
After a week, I didn't hear back so sent an email, to which they replied within a few hours saying that they were a little late due to the holiday, but I should hear back soon.
I waited for an other week and sent a new email to request an update. After checking, they told me that they are having difficulty pinpointing the exact source of the issue. Since it was taking some time, they offered me a replacement with an open box Air 2023, plus a free accessory of my choosing.
While the accessory is a nice gesture, their support agent has been top notch, and I understand that you can get a bad unit, I feel a little bit cheated exchanging my brand new scooter with an older used model I know nothing about. On the other hand, I feel a little bit compelled to accept their offer, as each week I wait costs me $100 in public transportation and 5 hours in additional commute time.
Or maybe I'm just a soiled brat for expecting more. Anyway, I guess I'll have to decide tonight.
TLDR : bitter experience with Apollo support. Not sure if I should accept their offer, but not much choice anyway.

2024.05.30 23:02 AggyAnna How good is Planning Center?

I’ve seen their pitch and it looks appealing. Can I get some honest reviews on how useful the free part is if you don’t buy the add ons?
To be specific: We something that 1) contains membership data (names, addresses, status, etc) 2) Easy workflow for registering for RE class 3) Easy workflow for tracking RE class attendance 3) Easy workflow for adding in new visitor information 4) Easy contacting various groups of people (eg reminding parents of 2nd graders that kids will play in water this week) 5) Lets different people access different fields (eg many people can get name and phone number, few people can get pledge records, other few people can get notes on best way to ask an individual to volunteer or give)
Any other features are a bonus

2024.05.30 20:38 Neat_Abroad_2090 Is it over or just beginning?

Is it over or just beginning?
Hi all! I need some MAJOR help with this Hoya (I believe it is a Hoya crassipetiolata - I don’t have any pics of when it was thriving but I’m 99% sure it’s a crassipetiolata, identified it while it still had lots of leaves/vines)
My maternal grandmother had this Hoya since before I was born I think? So like around 30 years in the family - never left Indiana, US. My grandpa kept it after my grandmother passed ~20 years ago, and his 2nd wife (my stepgrandma ig?) repotted it when my mom asked for it in 2016. The pot it was given to my mom in had no drainage holes and was sitting in a hanging pot in my mom’s bathroom, south facing window area with blinds always closed. My mom does not do well with plants but she kept this one alive for so long somehow, watering it however much she did over the course of 8 years. Fast forward to this summer, I got into houseplants a few months ago and now that I’m home from school, my mom asked if I could check out her mother’s Hoya and see if it can be saved (she knew it wasn’t thriving). I took it out of the drainless pot, clipped off dead leaves/branches, and carefully found the roots. The roots themselves were no longer connected to any stems, and I couldn’t tell if root rot had occurred or they snapped off during repotting, they were a medium brown color if that helps. Anyway, I did not know what I was doing but was determined to help my mom with this plant since she’s my best friend and her mom took her life when I was 5, it’s special to both of us. I found the live part of the main stem, cut part of the bottom to find some green, and put it in water for ~2 weeks. A small string looking thing was coming out but I don’t think it was a root. The leaves still felt alive so I decided to put it in soil instead. It’s been in that soil for maybe 3 weeks, and since it’s such a large pot the soil isn’t drying up - therefore I haven’t watered it since repotting. The leaves were okay until a couple days ago when they started going full yellow and getting crinkly. I was doing plant care today and took a look at it, ready to repot it into something smaller if it looked like it needed it. I found these 2 baby sprouts though, about 3-4 inches from where I planted the main stem. I told my mom not to get her hopes up bc I don’t know what they are, but babies are nice to see nonetheless! I do have a feeling they’re unrelated to the Hoya, maybe from the soil I used? Idk if that’s a thing. Figured it was time to make a post asking for some help - should’ve done so sooner but didn’t start exploring plant Reddit until like last week :(
I know that’s a lot all at once, and sorry for the large post - I’m accustomed to writing out every detail when it comes to living things due to mountains of biology lab reports every semester lolol
Out of my whole plant collection, I’d let all the others die if it meant this one could live - so please pls pls help! Even if you have to tell me everything I did was dumb and killed the plant and now it’s hopeless, it’s better to know. Thanks in advance !

2024.05.30 19:02 yowhatisuppeeps Local DIY music list --June!

Hello! Back with a list of Louisville music for June. It's few days early, because there are quite a few shows June 1st and 2nd! There's a lot of shows in general this month! I'm very excited!!
One I would like to specifically highlight in an act of blatant self promotion is the Louisville Zine release show on June 2nd. Louisville Zine is a project I have been working on for a long time at this point. The final product is an 80 page zine featuring art from local artists, local music write-ups, 30 pages of show flyers from 2023, in homage to The White Glove book, and a lot more. I am very proud to have the first volume of hopefully many finished, and would love to share it with as many people as I can. The bands that I selected to play my show are all new, with this being Daisy Chain's debut show. They're all incredibly talented, and I hope that they all take off. For more information about the zine / artists, you can visit @ louisvillezine on Instagram.
Anyways, back to the June list-- if there is any show featuring local artists that I missed, comment below :)
