For a moment I am shocked. If I had expected anyone to be here, aside from the Librarian herself, it would be Ricardo! But I guess the world is trying to surprise me today? Then again, considering the rumors, miss Pelafina wasn’t that much of an outrage either.

Then it hits me. What does she mean ‘took you long enough’, huh!?

Yes I get that part! Was this whole deal a game for her?

I take my first steps towards her, a little indignant and I feel it is justified, but then I notice something in the corner of my eye. Movement. I immediately turn on my heels to face it: there’s shades of black in the darkness, at least in one spot. Soon, a figure steps up from the corner of the room, dressed in a long black cloak, dressing pants and elegant shoes. The hood covers their head and some magical darkness obscurs their eyes, but I can see a few locks of green hair slip from underneath the shadow.

The figure lifts a hand, they are even wearing black gloves! That’s some commitment to the bit.

She’s smiling too much, just balancing on her heels and toes while I stand there. I don’t wanna say I hate her, we’ve barely exchanged words… but I don’t like her. Not one bit.

I decide to take Pelafina’s words to heart and ignore her, when another thing hits me.

“Overseer Pelafina!? But you’re just the lady from the bookstore!” I think my eyes are going to jump right out of my skull like in one of those old cartoons.

“A girl has to move up in this world if she wants to survive.” The old lady chuckled, just a little bit. “You know my name, but I never truly caught yours though. How do we call you, dear?”

Fuck, here we go with names again… but hey, maybe this is a great chance to build a new identity for myself!

“People call me Tav.” I say, trying to puff up my chest a bit.

“That was not what she asked though!” Lucía intervenes with a singsongy voice.

“Oh let her have her own nom de guerre, Lucy. It’s adorable!” Having these two messing with me is really going to be bad for my health. I’ll have to endure it though. “Alright then, Tav. If you’re here, I assume you managed to read through the book at least a bit?”

I flinch. Just how much does this woman know? Did she know the contents of the book from the start? Is this a weird ‘Hero’s journey’ situation? A mysterious adventure she has sent me into so I grow as a person?

Or is she just fucking with me.

“Well? Don’t keep me waiting! It’s been days!” Pelafina insists with a twinkle shining in her eyes.

“... I have a few words translated.” I managed to say.

“Oh great! So Humiko left you hints. That’s great.”

“Miss Pelafina–”

“Please, just call me P.”

“Uhm. Miss P.” I gulp. “Just how much do you know of the book, exactly?”

“Well, Humiko asked me personally to keep it safe, so that’s one thing.” The overseer counts with her fingers. “I know it is written in Magic Runes, which… shouldn’t be possible, and yet, there it is! I trust Humiko enough to know it has to be real.”

“Wait.” I blink. “What do you mean ‘shouldn’t be possible’?”

“Magic is not a language, or at least it hasn’t been understood as one until… well, right now.” The old lady smiles a bit wider. “If you manage to make more sense of it than a few phrases, you’d be making history, boy!”

Again with the damn gendering… I frown a little bit but, try not to make it too visible. I gotta focus.

“Yeah, get it together. This is not the time for your ridiculous whining.”

Sigh.

“So you know what the book is, but you don’t know what it says.”

“To be honest, I am not really sure what it is either.” Pelafina admits with an embarrassed grin. “All I know is that it is a project Humiko had for a long time already, and according to her express instructions, the hints could only be read by a sleeper.”

I haven’t really checked if I can no longer check Humiko’s note in the book, so there’s homework for when I return.

“I am sorry we put this on you with deceit and all, but would you have really believed me if I said ‘You have to study magic’ just like that?” The old lady shrugs. “It was necessary, and if Ricardo could see the potential in you, then this was surely the correct choice.”

“Is Ricardo an Overseer too?” I feel like that is a sensible question.

“Oh heavens no, he’s a Sleeper. Not a word of this to him, you hear me?” P’s gesture grows severe for a moment. “I don’t want him involved in such things at his age. He had enough adventures already.”

I guess the rumors of Ricardo being a world-trotting adventurer are also true. Huh.

“So. Tell me, what did you learn?”

She’s very eager… I can notice Lucía’s gaze on me, too. They are both very, very eager.

The guard walks up to me casually, offering me a fancy black leather notebook decorated with a golden apple and a silver arrow piercing it. She even opens the yellow pages for me, and provides a cheap plastic pen.

I nod, and quickly begin scribbling.

I scribble ‘Tlo’i’, ‘Golthoi’ and ‘Thako’ with their respective symbols.

“There. These are the ones I’ve learned.”

Lucía looks at me dead in the eye for a moment. I can feel the sharpness of her wit, she’s trying to read me… but it will be useless. I am in a dissertation now, bitch. I’ve been doing these for years, it’s my one skill.

“Interesting.” Lucía nods.

“So, what do these mean?” Pelafina approaches us to check on the symbols. “Terrible calligraphy, by the way.”

“Yeah, I know.” The confidence abandons me for a moment, before I puff up my chest again and begin talking. “The first one is the word for ‘Butterfly’. The second one is a word for the action of turning something on, the third one… I am not sure yet.”

“When used on a spell, it makes the effect happen upon touching the glyph.” Lucía knows. “It’s a very common one.”

“Glyph?” I tilt my head.

“She means a combination of Runes, dear.” P smiles warmly. “Alright, so ‘Butterfly’, ‘Ignite’ and ‘Touch’, then?”

I never said ‘Ignite’ for Golthoi, but I guess that is a interpretation of it?

… Interesting. That these things have different meanings in different contexts, would that affect casting?

“Ah, I also found this.” I draw ‘Jo’ in the book. “Does this mean anything?”

“That one is used to counteract spells. If you draw this in a Glyph, it cancels its effect.” Lucía seems happy to provide the knowledge I lack.

I actually appreciate it, for it immediately made something click in my brain.

“It means ‘No’.” A voice whispers in my head, my own voice.

Yes. It’s a negative. That’s why it isn’t so common on its own. When added to another symbol, it negates it. ‘No-Light’ must be a way to say ‘Darkness’ or such… or… backwards, ‘No-Darkness’ equals ‘Light’.

Would this be dependent on the culture?

I smile a little bit to myself. This knowledge I will keep up my sleeve for now.

“What’s that smile for? Did you see something new?” Lucía is way too sharp to keep that smile from. I have to make something up quick.

“I realized I now know how to counter spells. That’s so cool…” I whisper to myself, channeling some of that wonder into my lie.

She seems to buy it, for she immediately focuses on correcting me.

I feel a little bad for not trusting Pelafina immediately, but…

“Yeah, fuck her.”

“Alright then, I am going. Thank you again for everything, miss P!” I fail to hold back a yawn as I turn around and stand on the stairs. They… are still going up. “Uh.”

“The other stairs dear, there’s a magic escalator down.” Lucía tries not to laugh at my face, and fails.

With a heavy sigh, I take the right escalator this time and disappear down the stairs. Looking at my clock, it’s already three in the morning…time to sleep for sure.

As Tav finally disappeared from the Elysium, and the sound of a closing door echoed through the room, Pelafina let out a little sigh, shaking her head.

“Of course! But I still don’t know why we can’t just go to a family of Mages and put this on their sleeper child!”

So I came out last year as a queer man and decided to move to NYC so I can be myself and find like-minded people. However, I work as an engineer and the industry is dominated by straight men. I came out to my boss only. One of my coworkers is a traditional Muslim from North Africa and he’s been trying to figure out why I moved away from my family in the US midwest and why I don’t have a wife.
Yesterday, he walked into my cubicle and looked at an Aldi bag I have sitting on the shelf and started speaking in Arabic about how the colors on the are not appropriate for me( as if they symbolize the rainbow flag even though they don’t). I was trying to understand what he’s saying as my Arabic is different than his and he refused to speak in English. He didn’t say a single word in English because he knows he would get in trouble. He said something like I hope you’re not one of those..
His words bothered so much that I felt sick to my stomach and couldn’t go out for lunch with my office even though I had decided to go earlier. I’ve been thinking about the situation non stop and I feel like I should talk to him about it.

I wanted to share my experience at the massive Occupy Silicon Valley rally in San Francisco yesterday on September 20th. For those who couldn’t make it, it was a significant event for our movement, filled with powerful moments, a sense of unity, and a strong resolve to fight against the overwhelming influence of Big Tech.
We began in 2029 as a grassroots response to the increasing dominance of tech giants in our daily lives. Especially since the COVID times of 2020, it seems our society has been on an irreversible trend towards digitization, and as you all know many of us have felt left behind by this new world. Our entire lives are digital now, yet the laws and regulations have not only failed to catch up, but have in some ways regressed and made things worse.
This became especially true back in 2025, with the alarming enactment of the Trump administration's digital policing policies, which significantly weakened data privacy and has effectively turned the United States into a surveillance state. To make matters worse, #GoogleGate back in 2027 and the recent public school privacy leaks have confirmed to us all what many were already suspecting- that these laws and the current government is apologetically serving the interests of the Big Tech firms of Silicon Valley at the expense of our freedoms. For these reasons, our demands have been clear and just, focusing on reclaiming our rights, ensuring a more ethical use of technology, and the breaking up of these corporate monopolies that not only threaten fair competition and innovation, but have taken hostage our democratic system to a level unprecedented since the Gilded age of the late 1800s.
The rally I attended yesterday was held outside the Google headquarters here in San Francisco, which was chosen as it is a symbolic location representing the heart of Silicon Valley's power. From the moment I arrived, the energy was incredible. Hundreds of thousands of protesters had gathered, armed with signs demanding privacy rights, the end of surveillance capitalism, and the break-up of tech monopolies. Chants of “Break up Big Tech” and “Our data, our rights” echoed through the streets.
Despite the heavy police presence, the atmosphere was largely peaceful and determined. Families, students, workers, and activists from all walks of life came together, unified by our common goals. The diversity of the crowd was a testament to how widespread the impact of Big Tech’s overreach has become. Speakers from various organizations and backgrounds took the stage, sharing their stories and reinforcing the importance of our demands. When a video of Elon Musk played, the booing was unlike anything I've heard before- to hell with all these AI Tesla's taking our jobs!
One of the most moving moments was when a former tech worker shared their story about how they left the industry due to the unethical practices and the lack of accountability revealed by the #GoogleGate scandal. Learning about how all that data was harvested and used to hide and protect the child molesters working in the C-suite was absolutely horrifying, and it sounded like Google is unlikely to be the only place where such immoral behaviour is taking place. Their testimony highlighted the urgent need for independent bodies to hold these corporations accountable for their actions.
As the day progressed, tensions rose when a line of riot police moved in to disperse the crowd. Along with them, the feared police drones appeared as well, but thankfully they did not shoot electric shocks into the crowd as they have done at previous rallies. There were some clashes, and tear gas was used to push back a section of protesters who had started to build barricades. It was a chaotic scene for a while, but the majority of us remained peaceful, standing our ground and continuing to voice our demands. The resilience and discipline of our fellow protesters were remarkable, showing the strength of our commitment to peaceful protest and civil disobedience.
Being at the rally reinforced for me how critical our ten demands are. We need to reverse the Trump era policing laws that have eroded our privacy ASAP!!!

Moving Forward

Leaving the rally, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The road ahead is long, and the challenges are significant, but our collective power and determination give me hope. We are not just fighting for our rights today but for the future of our society, where technology serves the people and not the other way around.
I encourage everyone to stay active in the movement, keep spreading the word, and continue advocating for our demands. Together, we can bring about the change we seek.

Hello everyone,
I am deeply fascinated by swarming drone shows. The harmony and precision of these shows have inspired me to replicate these phenomena on Houdini. Currently employed at a drone show company, I am seeking to take my projects to the next level.
Current Approach:
My process began with creating simple geometries to which I applied scatter nodes. I then developed an algorithm to link the points between geometries and animate this transition. Using a few lines of code in Python and VEX, the drones identify their optimal target and move towards it autonomously.
To prevent collisions, I use Python and an algorithmic approach that I designed to be simple yet effective, ensuring a 100% success rate. I opted for CuPy, an equivalent of NumPy for CUDA, leveraging my RTX card to significantly speed up processing.
The process is entirely procedural, ensuring no drone is within one meter of another. A show involving 2,000 drones, 10mins show takes about 40 to 50 seconds to process on my computer.

Client sent me a YouTube short from some plumbing marketing egotistical guru goober talking about how is million dollar company posts 2 times a day on social media five days a week. Currently I post three times a week for this client. If I do 2 times a day five days a week, this would increase my productivity by 233%
I get $600 per month (before taxes) from this client for my current schedule of 3 posts a week. 95% of the time I am making the content myself the other 5% is him sending me photos from the work completed.
I don’t mind doing twice a day, five days a week I just need to get paid for it. If I go by the percentage of increase in productivity and apply to my pay, I’d be asking for about $2000 per month.
Does that seem like a fair price? To me it does. Maybe even less than what I really think I deserve. I worked for multi million dollar company and we paid a shit social media company $1500 a month to post three times a week and the posts were pretty awful with absolutely zero design skills and way off brand
Another problem I have is, I told him in the beginning If I’m creating a majority of the content it’s going to be 1200 a month, but if you send me photos and video throughout the month to give me something to work with it’ll be $600. He chose the cheaper route but after a month of that, he basically stopped sending me content so I’m doing the $1200 tier for $600.

TL;DR I want to propose an increase in my fee from $600 to $2000 per month due to a significant increase in social media posting frequency (from 3 posts a week to 2 posts a day, 5 days a week), which raises my workload by 233%. The client also hasn’t upheld his end of providing content, making the current workload align with a higher pay tier. My husband and I moved out of my MIL’s house a couple of months back. My Mil and I didn’t get along and there was a problem everyday. Once we moved out to another city and started living on our own I thought she will stop interfering in our life but she didn’t. She keeps asking random vague questions and I respond to her.
Today she crossed the line. She told my husband that your wife has been working in the same company, she is a girl from a small town so she doesn’t have exposure or an outlook. She should apply in jobs. Now my MIL has always lived on her husband’s money, same is with her daughter. She has not even earned a single penny in 60 years of her life. If she was someone who had worked, gotten her hands dirty I still would have understood why she has an opinion but she has no clue on what my job profile is. Hey women over 30, I am also a woman over 30 and I need some help/advice/kindness.
some background: i moved around a lot as a kid, have had fairly severe untreated anxiety my whole life as well as regular bouts of severe depression. a lot of trauma from my 20s including being the victim of a violent crime and SA. i have been on pretty much every mental health medication under the sun and to be frank none of them have helped. two years ago i was diagnosed w/ adhd and at first that medicine helped and things seemed good for a few months. i bought a home with my husband and we got married. i love him so much and he is a beacon of light in my life. but then i severely broke my leg and while i was home healing i lost the job i had for ten years. i was a hard worke and had multiple promotions there. so for most of 2023 i was in bed trying to find a job while my company made me stay on to help the replacements in order to recieve my severance. i started walking again but i will have issues with my leg forever. right now that means pain when i walk or stand but it’s not extreme it’s just exhausting. i should mention my husband is in the same industry and has not lost his job yet but it is not feel stable and he is looking with no hits yet. during all of this my mental and physical health continued to decline. my best friend of 12 years ghosted me and my elderly pet died also during this time frame as well as sick parents.
fast forward to now and i just started a well paying job however from the jump i knew there were red flags but i accepted it anyway because with tears in my eyes as i wrote this, i don’t know what else to do. other jobs aren’t calling. i’m worried i’m going to lose my husband or watch my mental health decline further and i don’t know even know what that would look like as i’m already not sleeping or eating. i leave for work crying and i come home crying. i am able to fake it well enough while i’m there that they don’t know what’s going on. they don’t talk to me at all and i’m training myself. the logical part of my brain says i need money, there is never enough money. coming off my injury fully insured with 12k in out of pocket expenses. everything is happening at once and i can’t catch my breath. i don’t know what to do. staying at this job seems like my only option but there is travel involved and this is the aspect of the job i seem to be unable to get over because of how hard it will be for me and my injury and mental health

Streaming Services started to feel more like the USA thing after there were so many other companies than Netflix - but feeling it's mostly the USA internet thing might be just an idea inside my head. Because I have a habit of trying to not share my billing info with many companies outside my country, for example, I have never given it to Google - so that also keeps me as an outsider.
My point being: I was supposed to be out of the loop and not knowing anything, I still knew about those companies loosing money - and expected something like this happen.
So... I feel like many people knew and were ready for it way better than I was... How come Watcher seemed to be so clueless, and timing was the most awful it can be? Or were they egoistic enough hoping that someone would want to offer WatcherTV place in a Streaming Service Bundles aka New Cable TV?
Also, this is one of the reason what makes me think about is it really incompetency and cluelessness about absolutely everything or is there some (intentional) malice behind.
Or am I just wrong not to be surprised, and all of you guys were surprised that something like Streaming Bundles officially are a thing now?
Sidenote: Cable TV (packages)- what is also a term I learn from USA people, because long time ago when I still watched TV, I never paid for my TV channels. Or the place I lived didn't (because when I move on my own, I had only a TV for PS).

Let’s say you’re working for the startup which uses Go/React and you have a chance to change the company for another more flexible startup which uses Ruby on Rails/React, with 100% salary increase.
Would this be bad career move?
I do not have experience with Ruby, just a bit scared that’s not really popular and may affect my career later on, tho this is really huge pay bump. I have 3 years of experience. I just thought that I can consider this and in the meantime I can prepare for FAANG.

I'm just honestly so sick and tired of the people in my life trying to take advantage of me in multiple ways and guilt tripping me afterwards, but I feel like I have no sort of escape from any of it. It really is ironic that I'm writing this right now because my mom's boyfriend is currently slamming stuff around and throwing knives at our walls just when I really thought that he was going to change. I recently had a heart to heart with him because him and my mom were having a few days of arguments and I kept blaming myself, but I realize now that he only guilt tripped me into forgiving him because he knew that I am an understanding person. It hurts so badly when I expect people to change and they promise they will, but they never really do and it so happens that someone lied to me yet again just because they knew that I would believe it. I try not to be upset with him often because I know that he is suffering too, but I have many issues and illnesses including CPTSD like him and I have put so much work into managing it. I will admit that he is definitely a better person from who he was a couple of years ago, but at the same time I just can't handle the fact that he is way older than me and still gets so angry that he has to destroy our stuff and even sometimes over the simplest mistakes from other people.
My mom has a habit of making his feel trapped when they argue or have an uncomfortable conversation, but that doesn't give him an excuse to cause people around him physical or emotional pain because he doesn't know how to not punch holes in the wall when he gets upset. I can understand feeling like a caged animal more than anyone may think I actually do, at this point I practically live my life living in a metal cage that's too small for me like I'm someone's dog. I blame myself so much for everything that has happened to me over the years, especially when it comes to me being vulnerable and open with other people because it has only ever led to me being hurt In the same ways all over again. These people know that I am vulnerable and they know that I'd doing anything to please them no matter how uncomfortable I am so they do what they want, in other words I have basically let these people use me as much as they have over they years just so they'd be satisfied. I have told myself for a bit now that I am not anyone's pet anymore, but I still doubt that so heavily when I know that anyone could promise that they love me and I'd instantly become loyal and roll over for them for a moment of praise. I grew up neglected by mainly my mother all while my biological father was sexually abusing me, it was the only sort of attention I had got when I was younger.
There have been a lot of times over the years where I have questioned if my mom really did know or not, but all I know is that when you grow up only getting sexual attention from the start, it can make you easily susceptible to other forms of abuse as well. I remember that my biological father told me to never tell anyone else so I protected him and his name for years even after he was put into prison, even when people would ask me about it I would just scream my head off until they left me alone. I have always been conditioned by the people who have hurt me the most to stay quiet or I would get hurt or worse that I would lose them, I never really did get out of that habit either because I still have an issue with doubting what I have gone through and protecting the people who I know sexually, emotionally or physically abused me. It has been 8 years since my biological father was put into prison, but I still think about him every day and my mind doesn't know how to let me rest. There will never be a day where what I went through doesn't haunt me in the daytime and at night, I know it'll follow me into my dreams no matter what so there's no escape. I was only 5 years old and I remember I was conditioned to think what was happening was normal, at that time I was told that I was to forgive him and that it was okay so he probably woke up everyday thinking that God was on his side while I woke up soaked in my own bodily fluids.
I feel so pathetic and disgusting and so many people in my life have told me that I just have to find a place in my heart to be able to forgive people but never forget what they did, but I can't and I know that I will probably never be able to move on and get better because of that. In my heart, I can't find the space to be able to forgive the adults who traumatized me when I was 5, 10 and 12 all while I am 15 even now. I am barely even an adult and I have had to made terrifying decisions in my life and question if I was going to be killed if I spoke about what these adults were doing to me. I just don't know how to get past this anger inside of me no matter how much I talk about it, I am done with people using and taking advantage of me and expecting to just forgive them and let them back into my life. I don't even know who I am let alone who all of these other people are supposed to be, all I can see is that side of them that knows what they actually want to do to me. I just want to be able to move on and live the rest of my life as a normal person, but the pain never stops and the people around me whether they're my age or not never stop using me. It makes me wonder every day if I really am only useful for one thing In my life, all while that may be true, I know that I deserve to be treated with love and cared for too just like every other human being.
I have only ever had so much love for everyone in my life and in the world and I don't know why it has never been reciprocated in the same way, I just want someone to love me and not use me or treat me just like everyone else does. I am exhausted of trying to maintain relationships with other people who don't care enough, I am exhausted of trying everything I can to keep people in my life entertained with me and I am exhausted of bending over backwards for anyone who shows me a bit of human decency. I don't want to feel sorry for myself or others anymore, I just want to go back to being a kid and watching cartoons and not knowing how to put these emotions into words or when I didn't realize everything and constantly be thinking about it. There is nothing left inside of me as a person anymore, nothing more someone that is just begging to be loved even if it means they have to become someone's personal pet again. I don't care anymore, anyone can use me or hurt me over and over again and I know I won't leave them. I think I live for this attention at this point and I'm nothing without it, I am not even a person without that attention because that's all I ever did and ever will know in my life.

Hello, friends! I got the ultra rare GT #6 doll in 1995 for the holidays when I was 12. Many years later, when I was moving out, my mom improperly stored her and my other AG dolls in a hot garbage. It took me many trips back to her house to actually find and rescue my beloved dolls, and when I did, Silver Eye had set into my beloved girl of today. “What?”
“You heard me. Let’s go skinny dipping. I’ve never been.”
“We cannot go skinny dipping in a public park!” Alex stood up from the swing. Betty stood up from hers as well, but ignored Alex’s pointed glare toward the sidewalk and instead took several quick steps toward the lake.
“Come on, Al! No one’s around. It’ll be fun.”
“It’ll be a bad idea, is what it’ll be. You know how close we are to where I have to be for work tomorrow? This is probably a park some of the folks there go to for lunch.”
“Not at midnight they don’t! Look around. We’re all alone.” She took another few steps toward the lake, teasing. “Come on, we just toasted to small crimes and misdemeanors. This is exactly that! No one gets hurt. It’s just a fun little secret moment.”
Alex seized on the first part of her response, ignoring the rest. “Midnight! You know how long ago I was supposed to be in bed? It’s been a long time since I was a teenager. I can’t do an all-nighter anymore. Work tomorrow is going to be a nightmare.”
“Yeah, but work is going to be a nightmare in any case at this point. Might as well have one last bit of enjoyment before you go back to the hotel and rejoin the real world, with all of its responsibilities and repercussions.”
“I can’t.”
“Suit yourself.” Instead of coming back up toward the sidewalk, Betty turned her back and walked deliberately toward the lake. A bushy shrub hid her from Alex’s view.
“Betty. I’m going back to the hotel.” He didn’t move, though.
Her voice came from behind the bush.
“You’d just leave me here at midnight, all alone?” Something thin and flimsy flipped up on top of the bush. It took Alex a second to realize that it was Betty’s dress. “And naked?”
“Betty—”
“Don’t peek, you perv! I’m getting in the water.” A series of small splashes a few seconds later suggested that she had done just that. “Whew! That’s colder than I expected. Better once you’re fully in it, though. Come join me.”
“I—I don’t think so.”
“Suit yourself.” Her voice was suddenly plaintive and vulnerable. “Don’t leave me though, okay? I’ll be out in a few minutes. I just want to enjoy this.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” He sat back down on the swings, letting his feet drag as he swayed idly back and forth. He whistled a tune quietly, until he realized it was Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al” and stopped.
He was surprised to still hear the vague echo of the song even after he stopped whistling. Betty was humming it as she drifted about in the lake. He caught glimpses of her in the moonlight, the shadows and dappled water hiding more than they revealed. She looked at peace. She looked simply, genuinely happy.
It was this mood that drew Alex from the swing and set him moving toward the lake. If she had been posing, showing off, anything like that, he would have had no trouble resisting. Everything in her behavior made it obvious that this wasn’t about him, though. She was doing this for herself.
Thrill-seeking held no appeal for Alex, but he was envious of that simple joy.
Betty looked over as he approached. She ducked slightly lower in the water.
“You coming in?”
“Yes. It’s your turn not to look!”
“I’d never dare peek into the men’s changing room! Which, for the record, is probably going to be that same bush. The cover around here is a little sparse.”
Betty sculled away and turned to give him a moment’s privacy. Alex stepped awkwardly out of his shoes, teetering as he balanced on one foot to avoid standing on the damp ground with his sock.
“You’re going to be putting wet feet into those socks when you get out anyway,” Betty called from the lake.
“Hey! No looking!”
“They’re shoes! You weren’t taking off anything relevant yet.”
He made a turn-around gesture with his finger. Betty complied.
Moving quickly, Alex unbuttoned his shirt and shucked off his pants and underwear, piling the clothes atop his shoes to keep them off of the ground. Betty was right, of course, but it still didn’t seem like a reason to make them any more damp than necessary.
Betty laughed at his slight gasp when he entered the water.
“See?” she said. “Cold, but you adjust quickly.”
She was right. After the initial shock, it was really quite pleasant.
The mud was cool in between his toes. The water cradled him gently. The stars were bright and demanding overhead. Everything was silent and peaceful.
The two floated quietly, enjoying the moment. Finally, after several minutes, Betty broke the silence.
“Do you even know the words?”
“What?”
“To ‘You Can Call Me Al.’ The chorus, obviously, but do you know any of the rest of it?”
Alex tried to bring them to mind and failed. “You know, I really don’t. There’s the part that goes ‘ba bump bump bump,’ but that’s just the horn section. Even the part right before the Betty/Al line, I only remember that it’s something about a bodyguard and a pal. Long last pal, maybe?”
“It’s funny,” Betty said. “Being so tired of hearing a song all the time, yet not actually knowing it at all.”
It felt like wisdom, though Alex wasn’t sure exactly what it meant. Maybe it was just the stars. It was easy to sound philosophical under a sky ablaze with all of the possibilities in the universe.
It was also possible that he’d had a bit more sake than he’d realized, on top of a few more beers than he’d intended, and had been up a bit longer than was reasonable. In fact, it was almost certainly that.
Still, though. It was nice to just float and watch the stars and think about what things might mean.
Eventually Betty pulled him out of his reverie. “All right. I’m in danger of falling asleep if we stay here too much longer. Shall we be on our way?”
Alex gestured toward the shore. “Ladies first.”
“You’re too kind.” She swam toward the shallows. Alex turned away as she emerged from the water. He could see houses on the far side of the lake, a few with lights still on. He wondered if anyone living in them had ever come out at night to swim in the lake. He supposed they probably hadn’t. It gave him an odd feeling, a mixture of ashamed superiority and mild sadness that they hadn’t ever experienced this.
“Okay, I’m decent. Come on out.”
Betty was disappearing around the bush as Alex waded back to shore. He shook off as much water as he could, then ended up using his shirt to towel off before getting dressed. He walked around the bush carrying his socks and shoes, returning to the swing to put them on.
“Used your shirt to towel off, huh?” said Betty, noting the large splotches of water. “Me too.”
“What, toweled off with your dress?”
“No, I used your shirt.” Betty broke into laughter. “No sense in both of us suffering!”
“Yeah, well. Thanks for nominating me to take the hit for us both.”
“I’m sure you can handle this tiny bit of unfairness in your life.”

That greasy-haired bastard is doing it again!!!!!

Hi all. I just wanted to share my SP experience and hear other people’s stories and what they believe it to be: a spiritual experience or simply a sleep disorder. Also, my childhood was quite stressful and I find SP more common in those with similar backgrounds, so it very well could be associated with psychological disorders (anxiety/depression).
It started as young as 6 or 7 years of age and throughout my life has become less frequent and less visually sensational. My most notable experience was of me coming out of sleep. It was daylight and I could see my room as if I were lying in bed with my eyes open. Next thing I felt was an earthquake and saw all of the walls crumbling around me. Before waking I felt a warm whisper into my ear (cannot recall what was said). Other experiences include spiders (this seems more like a subconscious thing), sensing/seeing dark energy, hearing words spoken (one was my brothers voice telling me the tables are turning, repeatedly), or simply being alone in my room, paralyzed. If I don’t wake up, I typically fall into a nightmare.
The majority of my experiences are when I am falling asleep, and some of them are mid-dream (or possibly me transitioning from deep sleep to light sleep).
The majority of my experiences involve panic. There was only one instance I can recall that happened quite recently (a couple of weeks ago) where I felt at peace with it, allowing me to come out of it rather quickly.
If someone is in bed with me while having SP, I would breathe heavily (vocals don’t work) to wake them up so they could wake me up. A lot of the time trying to move exasperates me, taking up more energy than I’ve ever experienced in the waking world.
