2024.05.31 05:31 Dis_Miss A few of my favorite boutique hotels

The recent debate on whether boutique hotels should be included on this sub or a new sub inspired me to share a few of my favorites. I'd love to hear any hidden gems you have.
  1. Serendipity Koh Lipe. Thailand pricing is so much cheaper than most destinations, so the cost of the room doesn't meet the chubby price, but the cost to get there does since it's hard to get there. We flew in to Bangkok with another flight to Hat Yai and then a long bus and boat ride but in hindsight we should have flown in to Penang. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Phenomenal service, amazing breakfast you choose every day served directly to your room, snorkels and water toys like kayaks included. We paid about $300/night for a private pool and 2 rooms for the Grand Pool Villa. https://www.serendipityresort-kohlipe.com
  2. Beyond by Giesel Munich. Tiny hotel tucked into a building overlooking Marienplatz. Amazing service, breakfast included, great location. I took a picture of the bathroom to use as inspo to use for my own bathroom remodel. It was about $900 but during Oktoberfest so is cheaper other times. My favorite activity was to come back early, get a drink from the bar, then open our windows to see the "show" from the "VIP area" above and watch all the celebratory antics in the square below as the people were walking to the train station to go home after a full night of Oktoberfesting. https://www.beyond-muc.de
  3. Sanctuary Kiawah Island South. Carolina. This is a resort and not a boutique but it's not a chain. The service here was unmatched. I went to the beach or pool with my friend while the guys went golfing. They let us take out an Audi included to go shopping one day. Great options for dinner onsite. We did a package that included golf for about 700/night. https://preferredhotels.com/hotels/united-states/sanctuary-kiawah-island-golf-resort
  4. The Stafford Mayfair London - when I travel I want to feel like I'm in the location I'm visiting and this place oozes British charm. Fantastic restaurant and super cool bar. They have a secret underground museum. Super comfy beds and linens. About $800/night. https://thestaffordlondon.com
  5. Tie for honorable mentions. We stayed at 21c Museum hotel when we were in KC. Art museum inside and really cool rooms for the price - under $200. https://www.21cmuseumhotels.com/kansascity and in Berlin we stayed at 25 Hours Bikini with a room overlooking the zoo also for less than $200. Very hipster with so many unique touches including a bike to cruise around and easy access to their trendy rooftop bar. https://www.25hours-hotels.com/en/hotels/berlin/bikini-berlin
I live in Austin and the Driskill is always a classic - one of the coolest bars to visit even if you aren't staying there. Owned by Hyatt now but a historic hotel that I like to think is haunted- https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/texas/the-driskill/aushd?src=corp_lclb_gmb_seo_aushd
But my favorite Austin boutique hotel is Hotel St Cecilia - https://www.bunkhousehotels.com/hotel-saint-cecilia

2024.05.23 00:00 jamesed84 Another will I get scammed question

Okay so I am selling a motorcycle on Facebook marketplace. Literally the first time I have tried to sell something on here. I have sold on Craigslist and avoided the scammers but I have an interested party that I am not so confident about.
So just some context, I posted with pics from the original dealer ad from when I bought the bike a few years ago with plans to upload new photos this evening. In a bit of a rush to sell the bike, buying a new bike so its priced pretty good. The bike in question is a bit on the rarer side due to the specific paint job and model but its not super rare. There are about 15 of this model nationwide for sale and only 1 with this paint job.
So in walks Krysztof. He is in Chicago, about 3 1/2 hours from me. Super excited, wants to see it today, asks for current photos, asks when we can meet, says he is from chicago and says he has cash and can pay when he arrives. Follows up 20 minutes later with "Im determined to buy when can arrange an appointment pickup". Then an hour later, "I pay full price cash, I can pickup today". Then about 30 seconds later "Can you answer my question".
Okay, red flag but 2 things, I was reading his messages and not responding because I was working and not able to think about that atm, also given the rarity and my own personal level of excitement when I found it originally (took a day off work and spontaneously drove 8 hrs away to get it), I can kind of understand that it could be legit?
I responded that I would be updating the posting tonight with pictures, that I couldn't meet him until Friday or Saturday. He says he can pickup on Friday and asks for my phone number so he can call me. I told him I would prefer to keep the convo on FB, gave him times I can meet. He says okay and asks for my address for a meetup, states he is in Chicago. I explain there is a lien on the bike and in Iowa means he gets the title after my loan is paid, that we would have to do bill of sale so he is not surprised. I also tell him we would meet up at my bank, mostly so he knows its legit and so my house is not known, and provided that address (not my home). He says he understands and that all works for him and just wants the updated pics beforehand.
Buyer details:
Account created in 2018, 204 friends, 2 active listings, seen about 16 sells, a mustang, an elantra, seed spreader and a riding mower, and about 3 motorcycles. Current posting is for BMW bumper and an Audi Tailgate
Thats where things stand. Reddit help me out. Does this sound legit or should I ghost him?

2024.05.22 21:49 pr3dicate Help me choose between “ze germanz” pls

We are looking to get a car, it’ll be mostly for either short trips to and from stores, or more likely longer road trips. My commute is less than 10km and I can either bike or take public transport, and on a nice day I do walk sometimes.
Wife and I have been discuss this back and forth a lot and have currently the following options (eyeballing bmw dealers as well, but currently nothing reasonable in our price range): - 2022 a4 tfsi 40 avant, s-line: around €38K - 2020 Audi q5 tfsi 55e: around 40K - 2020 MB E300de: around 38K
A4 is the newest and probably the best specced car, but it is also pure gasoline, so will be probably not the most economic one considering our use case and the fact that where we live charging is not a problem.
Q5 would have been my first pick but it’s both older and more expensive. Plus wife thinks the car is too big to be practical in parking and small city situations.
E300de seems like a good middle ground, both plugin hybrid and relatively cheap. Not sure about the diesel hybrids in general, though. Part of the question is how expensive they will be to service and second part is whether or not they’ll have any resell value in 3 years time…
Thoughts?

It has under 65k on the clock full service history, new brakes etc inspection and prep by a landrovejaguar main dealer for £13,400. 7th bike, 3rd Ducati, 2nd SuMo.
Finally back in the Ducati family after being gone and venturing out to other brands on the last over a decade. My first bike was a Monster 696, then moved on to an 848. Over the years, I’ve had a ZX-6R, RSV4, Super Duke GT, 690 SMC R, and now this. I haven’t thrown a leg over modern Ducati and I must say that they have come a long, long, long way since the pre-Audi money days. Excited to do some more riding with this.

2024.05.21 20:00 nyjrku North Boulder driving question

Pov, I don't drive an Audi or like an asshole.
Okay so you're turning (merging?) onto 28th going north from Jay starting on the east side, or south from Yarmouth from the west side
Do you
A) send it regardless of traffic. It's obviously meant for merging and get up to speed and merge I shall
B) stop and go when you have room. There is no safe merging possible when traffic is at speed
I always do b, and stop after the bike merge lane so I'm parallel with traffic and can see what's coming with my mirrors. This seems safest
Twice this week I've had people behind me lay on their horns when I stopped to wait for an opening. Like my guy, in the souped up truck that makes my truck look like a toy truck, I cannot physically get up to the speed those cars are going in order to merge fast enough
Worse was this lady in a beat up silver four runner with signs of accidents on the back left corner who honked when I stopped to let a biker in the bike lane go!! Yikes those intersections must be scary for bicycles. Then she continued to honk and wave her hands at me like I was crazy when I waited for an opening cause I don't do sketchy merge
There is boulder driving rants episode 362. What's your take

2024.05.17 11:59 Jealous-Rice1293 El Periódico: The World Championship would prefer that Márquez signed for Red Bull KTM rather than further strengthen Ducati

Link: https://www.elperiodico.com/es/deportes/20240512/mundial-prefiere-marquez-fiche-red-102252584
A very high percentage of the 1,400 inhabitants of the World Championship paddock take it for granted that 31-year-old Catalan Marc Márquez, eight times world champion, will be the rider chosen by the Ducati Corse team to partner two-time Italian champion Francesco 'Pecco' Bagnaia for the next two years.
The thesis, widely spread in offices, pits and press room of the championship, has gained even more strength after the Italian engineer Gigi Dall'Igna, guru and creator of the great 'boom' of the Borgo Panigale factory and first supporter of the Catalan rider, stated recently that the Italian factory "will take into account when making the decision, not only the results of this season, but the sporting history" of each of the three candidates.
It is clear, therefore, that if the weight of his track record is decisive in the choice, Márquez will undoubtedly be the one chosen. The rider from Cervera (Lleida) has eight world titles, 85 victories and 141 podiums to Jorge Martin's one title, 16 wins and 46 podiums, while Enea 'the Beast' Bastianini has one title, 11 victories and 43 podiums. There is no comparison, indeed.
Ducati's move
As the Grand Prix races go on and 'Martinator' continues to perform as he did last year, when he deserved to be promoted to the position of Bagnaia's wingman (“if they didn't sign him then, why would they sign him now, when they have Marc at their fingertips?” as one of the team bosses of the MotoGP grid told El Periódico), many are convinced that Ducati, which does not need MM93 for anything, as it wins races with a handful of riders, only wants to keep the best rider of all time under its umbrella (electronics work miracles) and prevent the decisive Márquez, who has already shown in recent months to have recovered his voracity and riding skills, from joining the ranks of any other competitor.
All the sources consulted by El Periódico affirm that Dall'Igna is tremendously in love with the elder Márquez, proud, among other reasons, that the best on the grid is, they say, burning with the desire to ride the real official Ducati, as he now rides last year's bike. The Borgo Panigale guru, who, last year, was in negotiations with Honda, is the most influential person in the structure of the Audi-owned factory and, therefore, his opinion is vital for the closing of the deal.
El Periódico is in a position to state that the World Championship and, of course, Liberty Media, the new owners of 80% of Dorna Sports, the organiser of the two-wheeled competition, would be happy to see Márquez opt to strengthen the KTM team, sponsored by Red Bull, the long-time sponsor of MM93. What is more, a source close to the top of Dorna does not understand why the Austrian firm, with whom the Catalan idol made his 125cc World Championship debut (he was champion on a Red Bull-sponsored Derbi), is not stepping up its approach to Márquez, who last Thursday acknowledged that he was talking to all the brands.
Perfect marriage
"It's the perfect marriage," said the source, "as it would be a beautiful and spectacular way to come full circle: to debut and 'champion' with KTM in 125cc and to conclude your successful career with the same factory, taking it, who knows, to the top of premier class. It is clear that for the World Championship organisers to have Márquez as a Ducati rider is not comparable to presenting a 'team' on the grid with the all-time champion and Pedro Acosta, 'the shark of Mazarrón', who everyone considers, right now, the heir of the eight-time world champion.
Now that's a tremendous clash: Marquez-Acosta versus the Ducati squad. Such a change would alter and brutally encourage the championship, the attendance of spectators, the take-off of the audiences and, above all, the media coverage of a World Championship, which has just been sold to an American investment fund for a whopping 4.2 billion euros.
Many in the MotoGP paddock are wondering what Ducati can offer Marc Márquez, compared to what the millionaire tandem formed by Red Bull and KTM could offer him. Nobody believes that the Borgo Panigale firm, which, I insist, does not need MM93 to win, would offer a million-dollar contract to the Catalan, while the energy brand that sponsors him could help the Austrian factory to raise a handful of millions to sign him.
Not only that, but Ducati has no reason to go crazy once they have strengthened their two-time champion team with the current Gresini Racing Team leader. That would mean that Márquez would become just another member of the Italian firm, surrounded by Italians, while Red Bull's media, marketing, television and networking apparatus, capable of sending a man into the stratosphere (Felix Baumgartner, 2012), could help Marc to achieve one of his dreams: The red tide in the stands at all the circuits of the World Championship is the same as the one that accompanies the Dutch F1 champion Max Verstappen, whose orange fans populate the grandstands of all the circuits of the single-seater World Championship.
Those who are voting for the deal (Marc Márquez's move to Red Bull KTM) to become a reality are not looking at contract reasons or anything like that. True, the Austrian brand has several riders under contract, including South African Brad Binder, one of the last riders in the sprint race yesterday, and Australian veteran Jack Miller, but, at the end of last season, it had to make room for the 'shark of Mazarron' in its structure and it did it quickly and efficiently.
KTM wants to win now!
"KTM, my friend, is a factory that has won the world title in all the competitions, categories and specialities in which it has decided to compete at the highest level and, for the moment, only MotoGP resists it," commented to El Periódico, in Le Mans, one of the best engineers of the premier class.
"And now," the same technician went on to explain, "we have all been able to see, especially with the portentous Pedro Acosta, that his bike is ready to fight for the big title all year round in the hands of a rider with experience, courage, determination and hands like Marc, while the 'shark' is growing." There is nothing better for this Murcian talent than to be at the side of Márquez, who has spoken highly of him since he appeared in Moto3.
In addition, the Márquez brothers' manager, Jimmy Martínez, is a former and experienced senior executive of the Red Bull company, which means that he has plenty of contacts to guarantee not only a good contract but also the technical and human conditions, that is to say, the recruitment of the reinforcements needed for his pupil to rebuild, perhaps, his 'paddock' family in the Red Bull KTM.
The experts only have a couple of 'buts' to all this conjecture. One, that Marquez should fall in love with the KTM as he is in love with the Ducati. And, two, if the signing were to happen, Marc would have to re-adapt to a new bike, different from his old Honda and his current 'Desmosedici'.
But none of these 'buts' seem insurmountable, when it comes to the best in the world, who in the fifth race of the season was already rubbing shoulders with the best, ready to win, as he proved yesterday at Le Mans.

2024.05.15 19:46 theJWredditor Had a road rage incident nearly 2 months ago. Still sometimes afraid of cycling.

On 20 March I was cycling back from school as usual (I'm 17) when a car reversed in the middle of the road just outside school without warning. It was a black Audi sports car - one of those cars you'd expect an asshole to drive. Everyone who I've spoken to about it says that he was in the wrong. He then yells at me when I go past. I give him a middle finger, which I know was a big mistake that I'd never make again. He then proceeds to chase and threaten me. I went on the pavement to disengage and make it harder for him to run into me. He eventually stops and tries to get out of the car. From his body language he probably wanted to start a fight. I knew I probably wouldn't stand a chance because he's a lot bigger than me. I use that opportunity to cycle away as fast as I possibly could. Luckily I was near a path that stopped for cars but continued on for bikes so I managed to get out of danger. I saw him from behind crashing into a barrier.
Whilst it was really dumb giving him the finger I don't think it would ever justify doing what he just did. It was an impulse as a way of getting my own back. Sadly I didn't catch his number plate at the time or had any photo or video evidence because I was focused mainly on keeping myself safe.
Then last week (8 May) I saw the same car (it and the driver matched what I remembered) and the driver proceeded to spit at me from ~10-20 metres away so he was clearly still spiteful about the incident and it would be extremely unlikely for it to be just some random person. Luckily he didn't chase me this time and just carried on with his life. This time I was smart enough to note down his number plate and report it to the police. Sadly they said there isn't much they can do because he hasn't technically committed a crime.
Do you have any advice on what to do? When I cycle I'm sometimes worried that I'd encounter the same person again. Especially since I take the same route at the same time of day. I've sometimes tried taking detours to avoid where the incident took place and I get a bit worried sometimes whenever I see a car that vaguely resembles his. Do you think I'm being overly paranoid? Is it worth buying a helmet camera in case stuff like this happens in the future?

2024.05.14 09:05 PCMRkid Would driving for short distances to get to public transport on weekdays and long drives in weekend be bad for engine?

i’m looking at getting a miata, and would use it for the commute to the train station as i live too far to walk and roads are way too dangerous to bike etc.
would it be bad for it to drive it the short distance either 1km or 5km depending on what station i go to? even the 1km drive right now only audi still gets up to temperature a few mins before i arrive.
I’d also use it on the weekends for longer and more spirited drives, would that help?
I currently do this on a higher mileage b7 a4 audi, but i want to preserve the miata for a long time and not wear it out.

2024.05.13 23:15 Jealous-Rice1293 [Corse di Moto] MotoGP 2025: Here's why Ducati will bet on Marc Marquez

Original article in Italian: https://www.corsedimoto.com/paolo-gozzi-blog/motogp-2025-ecco-perche-ducati-puntera-su-marc-marquez/
Translation:
The media continue to play on uncertainty but Radio Paddock is certain: it will be Marc Marquez in the official Ducati '25 team. Here are all the reasons.
According to strong rumours from the paddock, Ducati's plans for MotoGP '25 are already done. It will be Marc Marquez alongside Pecco Bagnaia.
"What else do I have to do to deserve the most coveted bike?" keeps repeating Jorge Martin, dominator of the French weekend. Nothing, the Spanish challenger cannot go faster than that. The problem, for him, is that the choice has not only economic reasons, but also strategic ones. Let's see them, point by point.
1 Liberty Media needs Marc Marquez to be #1 again
The eight-time World Champion is by far the most charismatic rider of this era. Before his injury he was unbeatable for years, rewriting a MotoGP record list this long and hiding Honda's structural problems for years. The injury in 2020, while interrupting the trail of success, further amplified his personality’s appeal, made him more human. Hell and a slow sporting resurrection are the perfect narrative of any sport: you fall and rise again.
Marc hasn't won for a long time (Misano '21) but even the fasting is functional to the tale. When MM93 returns to the top step the storytelling parable will be at its peak. That he returns as a protagonist, if possible in the role of rider to beat, is imperative for Liberty Media, the new master of MotoGP. It also suits Ducati, who in the meantime have promoted him to brand ambassador for Audi. They did not take Martin, but Marquez. Now, to ensure that the plan works, they need to put him on the most competitive bike and team.
2 The sporting aspect
Marc Marquez, although racing with a Ducati from last year run by a top but still satellite team, is already buzzing around Bagnaia and Martin, who have superior technical equipment. Marco Bezzecchi, who was an absolute star a year ago, is struggling. Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio are seen intermittently, and in this part of the World Championship they have never been at the level of the 'factory' riders. MM93 is there with them. So it's clear that he's putting a lot into it.
Having solved the physical problems resulting from the serious accident and the depressions triggered by the Honda crisis, he is making a comeback. In France he started from the fifth row: they say that in this MotoGP era overtaking is very difficult, but he managed to get on the podium both in the Sprint and in the GP, passing Bagnaia at the last. The insult of Jerez is (partially) avenged. Ducati is aware that by swapping Martin for Marquez the potential of the factory pair will not diminish. On the contrary.
3 Don't hand him over to the competition
Luigi Dall'Igna is not only a brilliant technician, but also a fine strategist. He knows very well that a Marc Marquez back in top form would be a very dangerous opponent on rival bikes. Imagine if he ended up at Aprilia. The RS-GP hovers ever more dangerously close to the Desmosedici, and he's just a hair's breadth away from making the leap. By getting his hands on the best talent of this era, he would become a serious threat. Same goes for Marquez if he ends up at KTM, a possibility even more likely because of the sponsor as rider-team.
Is Bagnaia-Marquez a difficult pair? There is no guarantee that Bagnaia-Martin would be any easier. The priority is to have the bogeyman in the box, rather than having to fear him in the next one.

2024.05.06 20:33 Practical-Hearing908 BMW x5 phev vs 2024 Land Cruiser

Looking for a new car and deciding between bmw x5 phev and a 2024 Land Cruiser.
Drive 40 miles to office 3 days a week, surf 3-5 times a week, mountain bike & other outdoor activities once a week or so.
Young family with one daughter and planning to have 2nd kid later.
Coming off back to back Audis and the reliability / durability of the Toyota is really attractive. My wife has a rav4 and that thing just runs with so little maintenance. The cost of maintenance isn’t the worst part, but when coupled with inconvenience it gets to me.
Would like to buy and hold to make this our adventure car, so leaning towards the Land Cruiser. But the luxury perks of bmw and surprisingly better gas mileage are appealing.
What would you all do - I know this is an LC forum so want to hear why I should go LC!

2024.05.05 21:19 Unusual-Pin-9981 Losing respect I have for Hyderabad. It isn't safe anymore.

Born hyderabadi, having a girlfriend from the northern India. As usual, I boasted about how proud I am to be born in the lovely beautiful city, telling her how safe it is, how nice the people here are, how nice the city welcomes everyone and never lets anyone have a bad experience.
She was also convinced, until she got a job here and started living in PGs near Durgam Cheruvu and Raidurg metro stations. The experiences she had, the stories she told about how creepy people have become in my hyderabad has made me to lose the pride i had in being a hyderabadi.
A few incidents she went through -
  1. Near raidurg pg, at 10pm, a man on bike followed her from cyber towers signal till pg, waited there for hours looking for her. Next day evening, he came and asked is 10k okay for one hit. Look at the fucking audacity if this guy. My poor girl not knowing Telugu yet, couldn't understand so she said sorry and left. He kept bargaining, 2k per night, 5k per night etc.
  2. She was crossing road cyber tower there was a bike coming, she moved back They made some mouth gestures and laughed and went away screaming.
  3. She booked a rapido for me, we were waiting near Hitex charminar arch, and she pointed at one man going to scooty thinking it was rapido. He stopped, came back in wrong route, started asking her yes mam how can I help you. After she asked if he was the rapido guy, he didn't say anything and kept staring at her chest. I intervened, and asked what he wants. This MF started giving his number to her asking her to call if she needs anything, he said me congratulations for having a cute girlfriend and he followed me when I was on rapido and asked me her details.
  4. She was walking from Durgam Cheruvu park to her pg, one creepy asshole approached her, started talking, starting with telling her that I saw you walking from there, you look extremely cute, asked her name, details, phone number, everything in 1 minute. He said his whole history, where he works, he has an audi, his parents details, and what not. He didn't let her leave until she gave a phone number. She gave him my phone number and motherfucker already called 28 fucking times. He offered her to drop in car, literally telling that place is unsafe. He also told her that he isn't looking for hookups and needs true love.
  5. After crossing durgam cheruvu main road, one bike with 2 boys came very close screamed Umma and went away. I can't express how embarrassed she felt telling this to me.
  6. One more bike 3 PPL on bike they slowed down and then did something to bike that made very loud sound, she got so scared they laughed and went away.
These are recent, and mind you these happened in very busy areas, literal main roads where traffic is hell.
All this. Happening in a city which I thought was the safest place for women, is turning into this shithole like any other unsafe city.
I am starting to lose the respect I have for Hyderabad, feeling less proud. I probably won't tell anyone about it's safety for women, and how nice the ppl are, just because of such creeps who make lives unpleasant.
Is there nothing we can do? Did you / your friends face such things happen?

Back in an Audi after 10yrs
First Audi was a 2006 A4 Quattro which i drove ~75k miles through college. Then i bought a 2017 Acura ILX brand new from the dealer. MAJOR downgrade in every aspect compared to the Audi. Sold the Acura within a yea10k miles and bought a 2017 IS200t. LOVED the Lexus, but got in my very first wreck last month and totaled it after putting 60k miles on it.
Decided to go full circle and get back in an Audi, because nothing drove like that old red A4 I used to have. Wanted something fully loaded/near fully loaded, good on gas, fun to drive, and relatively cheap insurance wise. Budget was 30k.
Rode my bike to the dealer, and ended up landing on this 2022 A3 Quattro Premium Plus w/ technology package, and only 8k miles, and after a week I couldn’t be happier…. The “Atoll Blue” matches my Harley’s “Legend Denim Blue” quite nicely! Just wish it had the black optic package, but oh well. Nothing i can’t do with a heat gun and some vinyl.
Glad to be back in the club!
