Alternatives to Adderall?

2024.05.19 20:54 keyisnotdead Alternatives to Adderall?

Okay so basically, I am a medical student and I was depressed for the longest time. I went through a bunch of meds but the biggest issue was motivation and focus. The SSRIs helped with the depression but not the motivation and focus aspect. It got particularly bad halfway through my 3rd year and I'd been struggling to focus. I was put on trial with a bunch of different Rx's but I always dealt with some sort of side effect. Now, I'm not proud to admit it but I ended up resorting to Adderall to allow me to function and perform in school like used to. Since I've had no history or symptoms of ADHD/ADD, I do not want to continue taking Adderall. So basically, I'm here to ask if anyone knows any natural/nootropic alternative that I can take that can affect my dopamine reserves like Adderall does. Thanks in advance!

2024.05.19 20:46 emrlz Examples of great activity descriptions?

I’ve seen Dr. Gray’s videos on Medical School HQ, and it seems like the majority of the time he’s critiquing students’ activity descriptions without providing examples of alternatives. It’s one thing to hear a tip over and over again and another to see it in action. Does anyone have links to any videos or files where I can see examples of amazing activity descriptions? Has Dr. Gray released a book or something with examples?
Thank you!

2024.05.19 20:38 MommyMarijuana1999 RN here who happened to come across this page… questions for you doctors!

I graduated from nursing school in December 2023. Throughout clinicals and now into my career, I've noticed a consistent pattern of conflicts between doctors and nurses.
Why does this happen?
We all aim to provide the best care for our patients. As nurses, we may occasionally page doctors over issues that turn out to be minor, but isn't it better to err on the side of caution than to risk a patient's condition worsening?
It seems our roles and workflows are so different that we sometimes lose sight of each other's perspectives. Nursing involves a series of tasks for each patient, often with strict timelines.
There’s a lot we handle behind the scenes that doctors might not see because they can't be with the patient throughout the shift. For instance, I've seen doctors frustrated when a nurse marks a medication as refused even though the patient initially agreed to take it to the doctor. Patients often change their minds, and this is just one example of the complexities we deal with.
I'm not trying to start a conflict or assign blame. I just want to offer some insight into our side of things.
My main question is: how can we prevent these misunderstandings and foster a stronger sense of teamwork? Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.19 20:28 ValuableImpossible74 English Lit plagiarism

So I have been using mr salles as revision for my English literature gcse and came across a video in which he went over a grade 9 response from a past year (Around 5 years ago). I then took the ideas and structure that the student used and made a similar version. I memorised this essay as it fit all themes for the play and I used it in my exam. However I realised afterward that this might be plagiarism and I could get penalised for this. Is this a big problem for me or should I be fine?

2024.05.19 20:20 FreezeDriedIce Should I look into getting a service dog?

Hi! I’m a highschool student (16) and I have some mental stuff (ADHD, anxiety, depression) and hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos and was wondering if a service dog would be good for me?
For background, I have issues with random dislocations, chronic pain, and overall issues with my mental health which are making my day to day hard. I’m still working on finding medications for my mental stuff but there really isn’t much to do for my hEDS. I’m still fairly active and many days I’m mostly fine, but many others it’s a struggle to even get out of bed. My mother is a hard person to live with as well, she’s a bit manipulative and stuff, along with me having a bit of a complicated split custody situation because of my parents divorce.
Anyways, some of my questions are: Would a service dog be able to live with me in a stressful home environment? Would I be able to leave the dog home sometimes? Could I get a hypoallergenic dog? Do I even have issues real enough to qualify? And if so, how do I even start a conversation about this?
I’m so sorry for all the questions and if I said anything offensive I’m really new to all this and super awkward about asking for stuff!

2024.05.19 20:14 Efficient_Ad6791 Life work balance and medical school

The choices you make could completely change the direction of your life, and I don’t want to make a decision that I’m gonna regret later
I’m a 19 year old student, in my gap year Undecided between dentistry and medicine
I like medicine more, it seems more enjoyable, more stressful, risky, there’s more action and a wider field of specialisations
On the contrary, dentistry seems too limited, doing the same things over and over again in the same place with the same tools, you’re not saving lives, it just seems less purposeful for me personally
This tendency of mine towards medicine had me choosing it for the better part of the year, until yesterday that I gave the topic a little bit of more thought (I scrolled through some instagram reels related to this which made me delve into it one more time)
Honestly I don’t know what other defence mechanism I should use, medicine has too many downsides and some that i don’t know if I can overlook
1-first I told myself I can’t qualify for dentistry ,The number of seats compared to medicine is way less hence it’d be more competitive
But that was cope, since I have an entrance exam and the score needed to enter is not all that different
2- dental school is easier and requires less effort
My cope= I’m a rather good student and have a good baseline of biology and biochemistry, putting a little bit more effort into medical school wouldn’t hurt and I’m ready to study throughout the course and daily
3-dentistry is better pay for less working hours
My cope= Medicine is already a financially stable job, and as long as I keep consistent after some years of working I could own a car and a house which is more than good enough for me And it’s not like the difference in pay is humongous
4- I’d be pretty much ready out of dental school whereas I would still have years of studying and non paying residence, and by that time I’m making any money I’d be over 30
Cope= Well I see a bigger purpose and joy in medicine, and there are downsides to everything
5-medicine is one of the worst fields for work life balance while dentistry is one of the best
And I haven’t found any copes for this one, I value my free time specially in my youth, My 20s-30s are supposed to be the prime years of my life and I don’t want to spend all of my time in the hospital
It’s not that I’m not willing to put effort, I absolutely am and additionally passionate about medicine even if it pays less, is harder and more demanding and stressful, It’s that I want to have a social life, I want to go on dates, meet new people, hike, camp, learn a new language, instrument and master a martial arts in the upcoming decade of my life,
And I can’t imagine myself working more than 50 hours a week, I can’t fathom how some doctors are doing 75+ weeks, That shouldn’t be allowed for the sanity of the individual, life at that point would be basically work, eat, sleep and repeat
And I’m lost on convincing myself I don’t know what to do
Any advice or insights?

2024.05.19 20:09 Londontipton99 OBGYN Residency CAS 2025

Hey guys, I am a 4th year medical student from a carribean school and I am hoping to apply to obgyn this match season. Since obgyn has switched out of ERAS and into Residency CAS, I am not sure how to go about applying. I went to the APGO meeting a few weeks back and they said that in order to make an account, we would need to have a link send to us by student affairs. they said this process was different for IMGs but didn't elaborate on it.
My school has given no direction regarding this and I was hoping someone had some info on how to make an account on R-CAS.
THANKS!

2024.05.19 20:07 Sidha_Fundaa "Unbroken: Yulia's Fight for Survival in the Ukraine War"

In the small Ukrainian village of Solovey, nestled between rolling hills and dense forests, life had always been quiet and predictable. That changed when the war broke out. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine turned the village into a ghost town, its streets empty, its homes abandoned or destroyed. Amidst the chaos, one woman's story stood out as a testament to resilience and survival.
Yulia Ivanova was a nurse at the local clinic. Known for her kindness and dedication, she had spent years caring for her neighbors. When the war began, Yulia's husband, Dmytro, joined the Ukrainian forces, leaving her and their five-year-old daughter, Anya, to fend for themselves. As the conflict intensified, Yulia did her best to keep her daughter safe, hiding in their basement during bombings and scavenging for food in the ruins of their once vibrant village.
One cold winter night, the sound of approaching soldiers filled the air. Yulia's heart raced as she pulled Anya close, whispering reassurances she didn't quite believe herself. The door to their home was kicked open, and Russian soldiers stormed in, their faces hardened by the brutality of war.
https://preview.redd.it/3mss4lo7bf1d1.jpg?width=1171&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8fea26d9a185510eaf793838adb1d685e8fafce9
"Out!" one of them barked, grabbing Yulia by the arm and dragging her into the street. Anya cried, clutching her mother's skirt, but a soldier shoved her aside, sending her sprawling into the snow.
Yulia pleaded with the soldiers, her voice trembling. "Please, let us go. We are innocent. We have nothing to do with this war."
Her words fell on deaf ears. The soldiers, fueled by fear and hatred, had orders to find and eliminate any potential threats. They saw Yulia and her daughter as nothing more than collateral damage in a war that had consumed their humanity.
As they dragged Yulia towards their makeshift camp, she fought back, desperate to return to Anya. But her resistance only provoked their anger. They beat her, their fists and boots striking with merciless force until she lay bruised and bleeding in the snow.
For days, Yulia endured their cruelty. They interrogated her, accusing her of being a spy, of harboring information about Ukrainian forces. She denied their accusations, but the beatings continued, each one a cruel reminder of her helplessness.
One evening, as the sun set over the desolate landscape, a glimmer of hope appeared. A group of Ukrainian soldiers launched a surprise attack on the Russian camp. Amidst the chaos, Yulia saw her chance. She crawled through the mud and snow, her body aching with every movement, until she found Anya, hiding in the shadows.
"Mommy!" Anya cried, her voice a mix of relief and fear.
Yulia hugged her daughter tightly, tears streaming down her face. "It's okay, my love. We're going to be okay."
With the Ukrainian forces driving back the Russian soldiers, Yulia and Anya escaped into the forest. They walked for hours, guided by the distant sounds of battle, until they stumbled upon a group of Ukrainian soldiers who recognized Yulia from her work at the clinic.
They took her and Anya to a nearby safe house, where they were given food, warmth, and medical attention. As she lay in a makeshift bed, holding Anya close, Yulia allowed herself to hope for the first time in weeks.
The war was far from over, and the future remained uncertain. But Yulia knew that as long as she had her daughter, she had something worth fighting for. Her spirit, though battered, remained unbroken. And in that moment, amidst the ruins of her old life, she found the strength to carry on, determined to rebuild and protect the one thing the war could never take from her: her love for Anya.

2024.05.19 20:01 outer000 Looking for the word "Umheuimlicheit" (unheimlich/Unheimlichkeit)

I have an A1 understanding of German, so I'm not sure if this is just a rare/niche compound word. Cultural theorist Stuart Hall refers to the word "Umheuimlicheit" by German philosopher Martin Heidegger. Here's a quote from Hall's 1999 essay "Thinking the Diaspora: Home-Thoughts from Abroad":
This is the familiar, deeply modern, sense of dis-location, which - it increasingly appears - we do not have to travel far to experience. Perhaps we are all, in modern times - after the Fall, so to speak - what the philosopher, Heidegger, called ‘Umheuimlicheit’ - literally, ‘not-at-home’. (p. 3)
Google translates "Umheuimlicheit" to "secrecy." All my Google searches refer to the same Hall article or Heidegger's writing on Unheimlichkeit/uncanniness. Then I Googled 'Heidegger not at home' and some papers came up. One (in English) describes Heidegger interpreting a super old greek play, and translating "unheimlich" to "not at home." Google translates "unheimlich" as "scary"
Then, I found a medical article about dementia that references Heidegger's book Sein und Zeit.
"Unheimlichkeit" is mostly used throughout the rest of the book. I guess my question is if anyone linguistically understands the connection between unheimlich and Unheimlichkeit to mean "not at home." I'm curious how Hall found the term Umheuimlicheit in the first place.
Wasn't expecting this to be so long and philosophical, but thanks in advance for any replies!

2024.05.19 20:00 AutoModerator Ensuring Academic Integrity Through the Ethical Use of Purchased Papers

While it is important to approach such services with caution, I can provide some information on how to intelligently use the products you receive and the potential benefits they can offer:
  1. Research Guides: Instead of turning in purchased papers, students can use them as research guides. They can analyze the points made throughout the paper and utilize the sources provided. This can help with understanding the topic better and serve as a starting point for developing their own arguments and ideas.
  2. Developing Supporting Points: A well-crafted paper from an expert writer can help students develop supporting points for their own essays. By examining how the writer presented and supported their arguments, students can learn how to structure their own ideas effectively.
  3. Rebuttals and Closing Statements: Purchased papers can also serve as inspiration for developing rebuttals and closing statements. Students can analyze how the writer addressed counterarguments and crafted their concluding remarks, providing insights and ideas for their own work.
  4. Study Material: The projects received from academic writers can act as study materials for upcoming exams or tests. Having the content organized and structured by an expert in the subject can help students review and consolidate their understanding of the topic.
Regarding academic blogs or businesses, hiring freelance writers with legitimate credentials can indeed add credibility and expertise to academic articles, SEO content, or social media pages. It is important to ensure that the writers have the necessary qualifications and expertise in their respective fields to maintain the integrity of the content being produced.
However, it is essential to emphasize the ethical use of these services. Students should never submit purchased papers as their own work, as it constitutes plagiarism and goes against academic integrity. Instead, the focus should be on utilizing these materials as learning aids, research guides, and sources of inspiration to enhance one's own understanding and academic development.

2024.05.19 19:57 Final_Calligrapher19 Never been so unhappy.

Long post — sorry. I never meant for this to be a “woe is me” post but I guess that’s what it turned into. Sounds pretty whiney now that I look at it. Let me preface this by saying that I love my daughter more than life itself. She is the best thing I’ve ever done.
But I am so unhappy with the way my marriage is going right now. I’ve been really overwhelmed with having LOTS of stuff going on at the moment (our one dog had his leg amputated a week ago after we desperately tried to save it, the other had to go to the emergency vet after ingesting some ant killer than our next door neighbor spread, we’re trying to book travel arrangements so my daughter can get to meet my grandmother who isn’t in good health, etc etc). I have some unexplained health issues going on (trouble concentrating, vertigo, feeling short of breath) and we’ve both gained a decent amount of weight since her birth in December. I pumped yesterday morning then sat down in bed and after 10 mins he walks in and says “are you gonna shower or just let there all day and let me take care of the baby?” I worked a 10 hour shift the day before as the charge nurse for the entire OR (20 operating rooms) all while pumping every 3 hours. Then came home, pumped, cleaned up the kitchen, showered and went to bed just before midnight.
My husband brings home donuts for breakfast, along with pop tarts and brownie bites. And Mac and cheese for dinner tonight. I told him I need to go on a diet because I’m addicted to sugar. He just says “for some Ozempic. It’s hard to eat healthy” as if it’s a cure all. He’s been on it in the past. He lost like 30 lbs and looked great. Then he stopped and gained it all back, as I knew he would, and continued to eat like shit. It just bugs me that he doesn’t even try to support me and tells me to take a medication because otherwise I’ll never lose the weight. But he actively contributes to the problem. And I can’t tell him that he needs to lose some weight too because I’m not attracted to him anymore.
He asks me if I need to increase the dose on my antidepressant instead of saying “can I do anything to help you?” He never wants to put in hard work where it counts. He wants a magic pill. But I can’t say any of this to him. I just have to smile and be happy and then cry at night when I’m up at 3am alone pumping in order to feed our precious little girl or when I’m in the shower or on my way to work in the morning.
Am I the problem? Do I need to go to therapy and change my medication and lower my standards for myself because this is my life now? I know I can’t expect it to be the same because I literally have a child now.

2024.05.19 19:56 Particular-Plenty600 What to expect after high TPO

hey guys, For the last maybe year and a half I’ve been having pretty bad tachycardia that comes and goes in episodes (140+bpm with low blood pressure) in addition to general fatigue, dizziness, muscle pain. I’m a 24 year old grad student, and I really thought all of this was anxiety/stress related up until recently.
I’ve been through a gambit of about 9 doctors who told me it was because I was underweight. Finally, after requesting an ANA and following up the positive results with a rheum, my TPO came back quite high. TSH/T3/T4 are all normal, though. I was wanting to know what to expect next; do people typically get medicated with normal hormone levels? Should I get an ultrasound? Should I go ahead and cut gluten from my diet? My next follow up is in a few weeks and I’m a bit scared!!

2024.05.19 19:55 World-Explorer53 Seeking Advice on Appeal Options for Insurance Denial of Medically Necessary Inpatient Stay

Hey,
I recently had a bike accident and broke my tibia. It was a grade I open tibia fracture. I have Anthem BlueCross/BlueShield insurance, and the hospital where I had my surgery is an in-network provider. A few days after my discharge, I received a letter from the insurance company stating that my inpatient stay post-surgery wasn’t deemed medically necessary.
I spoke with my provider about it, and they mentioned that this is a common issue with insurance companies and not to worry. The provider's office called and advised me to appeal the decision, explaining that I was on IV antibiotics due to the grade I open fracture to prevent infection at the wound site. I followed their advice and appealed, but I'm still concerned that the claim might be rejected.
The two-day inpatient stay cost around $90k, an amount I can't afford, even with a three-year installment plan without interest, as I am an international student. Can anyone advise on potential options if the insurance company rejects my appeal?
Location: Bloomington, IN. Thank you.

2024.05.19 19:50 Sea_Lettuce2739 my family is not proud of me because i didnt join the military

my older brother is in the military and my parents are so proud of him. they facetime him every week, tell him they're so proud and that they love him, always tell me about the benefits he's getting. my dad is constantly watching yt videos about the military, he raves about how much he's helping the family, how he's getting free edu, how he'll retire early, how he's so much better of a person now. my brother is being trained in the medical field, even if it wasn't what he wanted as a career, he was just assigned it.
i,19f, told them i wanted to go to nursing school and they both encouraged me to join the military so i could get it for free. i considered it. my worst mistake was saying that id join too and then retracting. which led to more resentment from them.
i think a large part of it is cause we dont have money. but i put myself in the best position for nursing school; accepted into an accelerated bsn program, im transferring all ge's so i could go to school for less time/ money, my credit score is good to get a lower interest, im working and do scholarships nearly everyday. i made sure to make the cost as low as possible. i even went to a cc so i paid nothing from textbooks, food, classes, etc. im not sure im wrong to think that parents should pay for their child edu, but i pay for gas, a car, internet, groceries with my income from a min wage job.
i have always worked harder than my brother in school. its something we agreed on, he told me himself that he didn't like school. it was between my brother and i to decide who goes to the military to help my parents with immigration. he ended up going because he told me he saw more potential in me and that i really cared about my edu. so he put off months of his life at basic and tech school so i could continue to make a career for myself.
don't get me wrong, i am just as proud. i love my brother and i think what he's doing is awesome.
i wish my parents would say they loved me and tell me they were just as proud. i feel like i have to graduate from nursing school for them to feel the same. but i know that my accomplishments will always be less; because i didn't do basic training, i didn't get school for free, i didn't help with immigration. i just want to hear they're proud of me and the work i put in. but im guessing the traditional route is not something to be proud of because im not standing out from the rest. there's no bragging rights in saying that your daughter is doing something everybody else is doing. i wish my parents loved me as much as they loved my brother, i wish they were an ounce as proud of me.

Also I scored 96% in ssc and 81% in hssc part 1, how much should i score in net 4 to secure my spot?

2024.05.19 19:46 TellChemical3365 Best res for main site nursing

Hey, I’m an upcoming nursing student for fall 2024 and I was wondering what the best res is. The only requirements I really have is that I want it to be social to make friends and have my own washroom (just not communal w/ the whole floor lol)
