2023.11.19 10:04 Secret-Asian-Man-76 New to HCTZ - 25 mg - 4 days in and my experience and side effects so far

Hi all. I (47m) was taking 4 bp meds - Lisinopril, Carvedilol, Amlodipine, and Spironolactone after having a hypertensive emergency (from a bad combo of high caffeine intake, dehydration, and anxiety) which landed me 3 days in the hospital last October as doctors tried to figure out a good combination of medication that would bring my numbers down. Heart issues like high blood pressure run on both sides of my family.
Fast forward to a few months ago and some blood work showed that my potassium levels were outside of the "normal" range, despite having excellent blood pressure. I'd like to note that I had cut my sodium intake drastically, keeping it in the 500-1500 mgs a day. In order to keep my kidneys safe, a backup doctor (my regular doctor was on vacay at the time) had me stop the Spironolactone and increased my dosage on Lisinopril.
Fast forward to this past week (Wednesday), I went in for my regular check up and they took my BP and it was pretty high, in the neighborhood of 170/110. A second reading about 10 minutes later showed 163/100. Talked with my doc and he was surprised to hear that I was taking the higher dose of Lisinopril as ordered by the backup doctor at the practice. There's no benefit above 40mg doses for Lisinipril, he told me. So he started me up on 25 mg of HCTZ.
This is my first time taking this medication and as of this writing, I'm about to start Day 4 of taking it on Sunday, Nov. 11. So far, as per the function of the med, I've had to pee quite a bit, which is to be expected as it's a diuretic. I'm making sure to stay hydrated. Also, the swelling in my feet, ankles and calves have almost disappeared, which was brought on by the Amlodipine.
As for side effects, the only thing I've started feeling flush in my head. I guess like a hot flash, minus the sweating. I'm also getting some tingling on my face and scalp, like after a good head massage. I've read about others experiencing those side effects as well.
Did my doc start me off too high? I've been reading that the 12.5 mg dose is better for noobs like me. I had great blood pressure numbers on Spironolactone, despite the potassium issues and occasional dizziness when standing too quickly.
How about y'all? What's your experience with HCTZ?

2022.04.26 17:50 cookingismything I’m doing a little happy dance!

Couple years ago, doctor told me I was pre diabetic (T2). I took it a bit serious but honestly not very. Cue the pandemic. My brain said “well if I’m gonna die, might as well have that bowl of pasta”. Fast forward to June 2021. Saw the doctor and the A1C went from 6.5 to 9.7. Wowza!!!
At 43, I said enough enough and I need to change my life. I have a teen still and I’d like to do my best to delay the need of insulin, keep my eye sight, my feet, and my kidneys.
Doctor put me on Rebylsus (7mg) and Metformin (500mg/2x daily). I cut out all the food I knew I shouldn’t be eating like fast food, desserts, big ass bowls of pasta, tons of bread. And started eating lean proteins, fruits, and veggies as my main food. And a bit of dairy cuz mama loved cheese. I also cut my eating and portions down to 1/2-1/3 of the amount of food I was eating.
Had a blood test in December and my A1C came down to 5.6. I had also lost 28lbs by then. Today I had a doctor appointment. A1C is now at 5.4 I’m down a total of 38-39lbs. I’ve also added dancing weekly (salsa lessons) since January (gets the heart going and I sweat a lot. Lol). Now I may have a piece of pizza but it’ll be maybe 2 squares and have a salad or a bowl of minestrone with it. Or a small taste of something but never a whole dessert or a whole ass pizza
Doctor was so proud of me. I’m 44f and smack in the middle of perimenopause which we all know how hard it is to loose weight when estrogen is whacky. My blood pressure is the best it’s ever been. He cut off 1 of the BP meds (now just on the lowest doe of lisinipril) and now metformin just once a day. Still on the Rebylsus. The metformin has cleared my eczema so I’d like to stay on it for a bit more.
I guess I just wanted to share my story and to say that yep I’m pretty proud of myself.
This is a hard disease and the journey isn’t easy. I do hope we all keep fighting. My love and support to you all

2019.07.21 14:47 big5xy Raised red bump on fore arm

Age: 33 Sex: male Height: 6'6" Weight: 350# Race: white Smoker Drug use: occasional beer Location of issue: right fore arm
Have a small raised bump on right fore arm, has been there for about 2 weeks and has grown slightly, has a few very small bumps similar to white heads but much smaller, almost scale like. It doesn't hurt or itch at all. At first I attributed it to heat rash due to local temps and amount I sweat. But with traditional methods it hasn't cleared (diaper rash cream usually clears it up for me) but it's only gotten slightly bigger. And doesn't itch like a heat rash. If it makes a difference I do smoke (quitting soon, date set of 10 Aug. ) no drug use save for the occasional beer (3-4 bottles a week). No known allergies, prescribed lisinipril for HBP.
