SRDines can't decide whether to defend the comedian being beat up by the Nazi, or the Nazi who was triggered by the comedian's bad joke

2024.06.04 22:28 Careless_Rope_6511 SRDines can't decide whether to defend the comedian being beat up by the Nazi, or the Nazi who was triggered by the comedian's bad joke

Context behind the comedian being beat up by the Nazi within the post linked by SRD (minor correction in square brackets is mine):
On June [1st] 2024 a man uploaded to Twitter a photo of him posing with his baby, the image, with the caption “Happy and proud” showed the man holding his son on his arms with the face of the baby censored by a red heart. A few hours later, a Spanish comedian responded to the picture “Nothing and no one will avoid the possibility of him being gay, and when he’s older he won’t be able to stop sucking black cock. From a black blue collar worker cock, not a footballer. Time is so wise, we can only wait” The man found out the comedian was performing in Murcia, Spain, on June 4rth, so he drove from his town to Murcia (about a 6 hour drive) and showed up to his comedy show, this is the altercation that followed.
Additional background per this El Mundo article (Spanish).
Cue a SRD free-for-all:

2024.06.04 21:47 arrarium I am a middle aged adult who never even heard of the -concept- of danmei before a few weeks ago and now I have full brainrot. Thanks a lot.

This is my confession about how my brain was reduced to slush by this novel series. I hope by writing it down, I may be freed from this curse or at least feel 15% better about myself and my choices. This is a full length essay and I don't actually expect anyone to read it. Just move on with your life, okay? You definitely have something better to do.
Part 1: HOW I GOT HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. TLDR: it’s romance.io ‘s fault
I'm a happily married, homeowning, middle-aged American adult who has never had even the slightest interest in anime/donghua, manga/manhua, or foreign TV dramas of any kind. My exposure to the entire idea of martial arts is limited to the TaeKwonDo lessons my little brother took in the mid 90s. At the dojang next to the Blockbuster Video, no less.
So, I -do- like romance novels and my favorites are a little specific. I like stories with any gender pairing, that take place in some kind of fictional kingdom of the past (usually with magic), where the characters aren't usually immediately in love but find love through some kind of adventure, and I like those characters to generally be humans, and not too toxic. I use romance.io pretty regularly to document what I read and find new suggestions and that's where the trouble all started.
Last few years, I just happened to read a bunch of "ancient world" m/m stuff (I can't recommend enough the Sword Dance series by AJ Demas, and A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland to anyone who will listen...) and the algorithm started getting "ideas" and by "ideas" I mean recommending me The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation continuously. I kept ignoring it though, because that cover art had me thinking "anime" and "anime" has me thinking "that's not my thing".
But romance.io had another item it wanted me to read just a little further down the recs list and that was Beware of Chicken by CasualFarmer. "Beware of Chicken", I thought. Well at least that sounds humorous. I'll give it a shot. And that was the gateway drug.
Beware of Chicken is the fricken' adorable story about how a Canadian guy was isekai'd into a xianxia setting, decides to ignore that it's a xianxia setting and take up farming but oh no! his qi is too powerful! and he spiritually awakens all the farm animals! Heartwarming hijinks ensue. I highly recommend. I’m pretty sure it was written in English from the get-go and without having to go through translation it was nice and easy to read. It introduced me both to cultivation tropes and the whole genre of light novels so very gently.
With the stage set, I started reading MDZS…
Part 2 WHY THESE BOOKS, SPECIFICALLY, HAVE SUCH A HOLD ON MY DOPAMINE RECEPTORS. TLDR: Wei Wuxian, you scamp you…
1) Wei Wuxian is just so loveable. He’s funny, he’s flawed, he’s mischievous, he’s powerful, you understand his motivations both when he’s acting selfishly (relatable!) and selflessly (heartbreaking!!). I can’t help but to love him and so it feels natural and obvious why Lan Wangji can’t help but to love him too.
2) The adventure is non. stop. I love a good slow-burn but you have to have some fuel to actually be burning, right? Well the fuel is blazing, brother. The action doesn’t let up and even when the story gets convoluted it doesn’t usually drag.
3) The side characters stealing and subsequently breaking my heart all over the place. Jin Ling, Lan Sizhui, Wen Ning (personal favorite, what pathos), Jiang Chen, just carrying around all their hope and all their pain…
4) Something about the time skip structure fading in and out just really connected. Usually I think a story jumping around like that would frustrate me but somehow all the beats and themes lined up so well it felt right. “Inevitability” seemed to be a real theme throughout the story and the inevitable destiny of WWX <3 LWJ 4eva was never in question and yet so, so good when it came together.
5) WWX <3 LWJ 4eva
PART 3 I’M OUT OF WRITING STEAM. TLDR: My spouse is going to judge me.
He didn’t make fun of me for reading Ice Planet Barbarians for godssakes but I know as soon as I try to watch The Untamed TV drama I’m not going to hear the end of it. This is the show that’s going to get me into watching foreign dramas? Really? This??
The end. Thanks for letting me get it all out.

2024.06.04 17:34 BreauxSciencePhD FULL TEXT of Variety cast interviews (June 3, 2024)

Variety recently published a piece on Dropout titled Game Changer Season 6 Cast Talks Emmy Aspirations, Favorite Moments and When Dropout’s First Original Movie Is Coming
95% of this article could not be viewed without disabling adblockers, and even then some people reported problems, so I am reproducing the interviews below. Note that the article referenced "a game mimicking the unpredictable rules of the show" which followed this interview, but I have not found any further information about that.

Ally Beardsley

Ally Beardsley (they/them) is a talented writer and improviser affiliated with the Upright Citizens Brigade, a comedy institution and training center founded by Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh in 1996. Despite finding the term somewhat “allergic,” their courage in embracing their authentic self in front of Dropout’s large and passionate audience across multiple seasons of “Game Changer” and other programs demonstrates their determination to make people laugh.
Looking back, how do you view your transition so publicly on Dropout?
I feel like I had the horrifying pleasure of transitioning very publicly and being in sketches regularly.
It was very scary, especially when some parts of your body feel very out of your control. My advice is that kind of old and cliche thing—being is becoming. There is no final form, or I’m “whole” now. I’m figuring it all out, and now I feel comfortable. You’re always going to feel a little bit uncomfortable, and that’s great—that’s being alive.
What has been your experience on the show?
What’s been fun about this is two realities are going on: all of us having fun, and then as “Game Changer” continues to go for more seasons, there’s the “lore” of the show, which I think is inflated because it’s funny. So, messing with Brennan in real life would be less fun than messing with the version of Brennan that appears on Dropout shows. If we get nominated for an Emmy, it would be like Pirate Radio winning a Grammy.

Raphael Chestang

Raphael Chestang has been writing in the digital landscape for over a decade. In 2017, he became a cast member at CollegeHumor. Before that, he was a writer for ETonline. Aside from appearing in multiple “Game Changer” episodes, he also served as the official “referee” for the game the cast played with Variety. Recently married, he had to book a new venue for his wedding day with only four days’ notice because the owner of the previous venue was “on the run.
How many unread emails are in your inbox today?
4,900, which is a lot better because I had over 11,000. The good thing is that it’s created this movement online where people are now sharing their 49,000 or 110,000 emails. It’s almost like I’ve allowed the people to release themselves from their shame.
Congratulations on your wedding. What is the status of your lawsuit?
It’s ongoing. We have to find them \[laughs\]. They were on the run.

Katie Marovitch

Katie Marovitch has been around since the early days of College Humor and has continued to shine with appearances in its vast offerings, including the new show “Smartypants.” The comedy writer, actor, and director performs improv and standup across Los Angeles. One of the best facts is her short appearance on the “Second Place” episode, where the contestants had to Venmo her the most money for points, which has continued to deliver ten-fold after the producers put her code on the screen. She regularly receives funds from random people (with a few requests that she ignores).
When did you know you had to make people laugh for a living?
I know the exact moment. I was trying to work in finance in college. I was the valedictorian in high school and got to give a speech at Northwestern. I always thought I would go the money route and work in finance. I had a third-round interview at Nielsen, which they flew me out for in New York. While I was answering the questions, the woman interviewing me said, “You are a very strange person.”
I said, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
I thought I had answered everything professionally and was coming off as intelligent. When I left, I called my Dad and said, “That was weird, right?”
He said, “There’s no way they won’t hire you after that because that would have been rude.”
And then I did *not* get the job. And I was like, I guess that’s not like the world for me because I can’t be the little freak I am. And I literally went to LA soon after.
Also, can you share why you Venmo’d ‘Vagina Chocolate’ to Ally on one of the episodes?
I know exactly why… I was buying shrooms from Ally, and they were heart-shaped and reminded me of a vagina, so I wrote vagina chocolate.
Reich: You’re answering this as if you’re in a deposition.
I mean, I do not recall

Vic Michaelis

Vic Michaelis (they/them) hosts the web series “Very Important People,” which was submitted for outstanding short-form series (comedy, drama, or variety) and outstanding performer in a short-form series. One of the most hilarious moments of the day was when Michaelis revealed they did not have a mail application on their iPhone. Instead, they opened the web browser to access their Gmail, which sent fellow castmate Brennan Lee Mulligan into a spiral.
How does “VIP” differ from other shorts that are out there? And what did it feel like to break character so much when Zac Oyama became “Tommy Shriggly?”
It’s a long-form improv show, mostly involving scenes cut into smaller sections, and I don’t think there are a lot of improv cuts like that. When it came to Zac, I saw him upstairs. I walked in, and I didn’t say anything. I looked at him, and I walked out of the room. Do you know when people get bad news in movies, and they slide down the door and collapse? I did that — twice. The interview is about an hour. We get a lot of comments asking what was cut for time, and there isn’t much that’s cut.

Oscar Montoya

Oscar Montoya’s big breakout role was as Richie on the HBO/Max comedy series “Minx,” for which he was honored last year with the Supporting Actor TV Award at the Critics Choice Celebration of Latino Cinema and Television. His talent is only surpassed by his kindness and love for his fellow comedians. In many ways, he has become the heart and soul of Dropout, consistently demonstrating an ability to make people laugh without resorting to meanness.
Were you frustrated by the journey and cancellation of “Minx?”
“Minx’s” journey felt like the equivalent of an uphill climb while a mudslide was happening simultaneously. The critics responded positively, but unfortunately, it didn’t click with the masses. Working on the show made me understand that if you’re happy with the work you’re putting out there, and it resonates with at least one person — that’s the biggest takeaway.
This season of “Game Changer” was a showcase for how loving and nice you are. Is that genuine?
I’m incredibly non-competitive. Being in a contest with a person like Brennan because when he, it’s like, I like to take it seriously. And then when someone tries to get into it, I’m like, Oh, this isn’t mine. And I’m just like a bystander watching. Ally knew exactly what buttons to push on Brennan. And all I had to do was agree and support the chaos that was happening. And it was, it was just so fun. But yeah, I love it when other people succeed, like, I don’t know, I still feel like this whole, just being a part of drop out feels like such a dream, that I am so lucky that I get to do this. And every, like, every time, like every show, every time. I’m part of this. I can’t believe I’m on set with the best people around. And how can I not have the best time to show my love and appreciation? I’m very much, you know, loving languages, like words of affirmation. So I’m like, I take advantage of that all the time. I tell people I have loved them all the time. Because people don’t hear that often. You know? And you can you can feel the love from everyone.

Brennan Lee Mulligan

Host of the indie streamer highly popular “Dungeons & Dragons” series “Dimension 20,” the creator and game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has become a cherished staple and a big part of its rising success. His appearances on “Game Changer” are among the most watched on the company’s social channels.
What are your feelings about the state of Hollywood and making content?
There’s a funny thing that traditional legacy media does: It goes as you come to a cattle call casting. I’ll tell you who you are. I remember a commercial casting director at UCB in New York who went down the line and just pointed at people before we even spoke, giving us what our thing was. The idea that some fucking casting robot wouldn’t know what these people’s gifts are, and more than the comedic personalities that each of these artists has spent years crafting, is something that I hope dies. And I hope that we’re the ones that you kill it.
What will you tell your child when they find your “Yes or No” monologue or “Roseate Spoonbill” online when they’re older? Is there a lesson to be learned?
It’s a great question. The fun thing about the “spoonbill” was that I wasn’t supposed to be there. I was subbing in for Raphael. The things I do on “Game Changer” are very similar to what I do on “Dimension 20,” which is that as someone who’s worked with kids my whole life as a camp counselor, the big thing you want to do, especially if you’re an older brother figure for people, is lose and lose well.
I think the hysteria and mania surrounding being bamboozled is similar to what I do behind a dungeon master’s screen. I play big, scary villains so that people feel like heroes when they get clowned on in the last episode. In a society obsessed with success and victory at all costs, embracing losing is a lovely thing.

Sam Reich

How far away are we from seeing Dropout’s first feature film?
I think the first thing we need to do is drop out and figure out our path back into the scripted period, which we are doing. We’ve got a few irons in the hopper. The fun of thinking about scripting right now is that we know these people so well that writing for them will be a fun exercise. You know, typically, when you’re creating a show, you’re thinking about it, riding forwards, like, Who will we get to play this role here? We get to think about it as cast backward, which is fun. It’s got a few ideas that we’re working on. We’ll take our time developing them to make sure that by the time gonna be great, when they think of your role, it’s gonna be.
I have a pitch to this group: I would love to use a model like “The Big Chill” as an approach to making a feature film. I would take a group of people, rent a house, and do some loosely scripted structured scenes where we’re all playing the closest versions of ourselves. I think that would be incredible.
Where did you come up with your signature opening line: “I’ve been here the whole time?”
What it actually means is that I’m announcing the show, but the camera doesn’t cut to me until I say it. I’m telling the audience that I’m having fun with the fact that I’m hosting the show. But people seem to think that it has a deeper meaning, which makes me want to indicate that it does.

Jacob Wysocki

Jacob Wysocki began his career in the independent film scene, starring in Azazel Jacobs’ coming-of-age dramedy “Terri” (2011) alongside John C. Reilly. This role earned him a Gotham Award nomination for Breakthrough Actor. Since then, Wysocki has pursued acting across various platforms, including roles in TV shows like NBC’s “Superstore.” He was also considered for larger roles, such as the quirky but memorable Shawn in 2017’s “I, Tonya,” a role that ultimately went to Paul Walter Hauser.
With your career starting in the indie circuit, what kinds of things are you looking to make?
It sometimes feels like people don’t know I existed before Dropout — which is fine, and I understand why that is true. But the reality for me is that I’ve been doing this very seriously since I was 20. I did that movie when I was 20. It was the first movie that I’d ever done. The only professional work I had done before was TV or my own stuff. It was the first time in my life that I knew exactly what I needed to do for the rest of my life. It was extremely affirming and placed me exactly where I needed to be in the universe.
What was it like to watch this season’s episode where you were transformed into “super Saiyan Jacob?”
It was like a child’s version of me was somewhat healed. I don’t think it’s a particularly masterful act of comedy, and I think it’s just relatable. I think every person who’s similarly aged probably did that at a time when they were kids. And it’s also fun to scream, and it matches up well with being rambunctious. If anyone had the opportunity, they would do that as well. Katie’s husband did the Super Saiyan animations. What sucks for me is I don’t know how you do something cooler, funnier, or better than that. That’s my own challenge.

2024.06.04 17:22 RoraRory Are there any things that are frequently used as a source of humor in drama's that you just don't find funny?

I was watching My Wife's Double Life today and as seems to happen in a lot of drama's there's an incident where the FL's actions lead to people having a misconception that the ML can't do it and to me that's just not very funny, it's just embarrassing for them. Does anyone else feel that way? Are there other common bits of humor that you feel fall flat?

A trama é composta por oito capítulos, com cada par de episódios tendo realizadores diferentes. 2024.06.04 10:35 violetdroppp Is Baddies anything more than just fight after fight

I only watched the first episode and couldn't get into it. It just seemed like exaggerated drama and nothing more. Basically just like everyone was trying way to hard to look like a hard ass. The lack of music also made the tone strange. Anyways, all I see on this sub when people post about Baddies are fights. Really trashy looking fights. Is that all it is? Lol
Like is there any kind of humor to it like with bgc, where there would at least be some fun or funny moments thrown into the mix?

2024.06.04 07:49 rusticmartyrdom What qualities in a partner are important to you?

So, let's chat about what we look for in a partner. For me, it's all about compatibility and chemistry. You know, that spark that just clicks? Shared interests are key. I mean, imagine dating someone who hates your favorite hobby! Trust and communication are non-negotiable. I can't deal with mind games or drama, ain't nobody got time for that! A sense of humor is huge too. Life's too short to be serious all the time. And kindness? Oh yeah, that's a deal-breaker. I want someone who treats others with respect and empathy. What about you all? What qualities do you value most in a partner? Let's get chatting!

2024.06.04 07:26 Gnashes 33 [M4F] Texas / Online - Looking for my other half!

My name is Chance! My career is in public accounting where I'm currently a senior manager. Sadly as a result, my usual workday is all boring and spreadsheets and making sure people did their stuffs right (companies, not people). Nothing to do with taxes, all just normal boring accounting for every day business stuffs. I'm decent enough at the job and it pays well enough that I don't really see myself changing careers unless something external pops up and causes me to give it a second thought.
Physically - I'm white, 5'8", blue eyed, salt and pepper hair (been getting more gray since high school!), bearded currently, and have a bit of a belly that I'm working on losing. I'm a stockier built guy so I don't look as big as my weight makes me sound, but I could definitely use losing some weight!
Politically - I lean left. People are people regardless of their beliefs, what gender they were both with and/or identify with. People deserve for their government to have their backs if they're in need, society would be better if everyone were a tiny bit more kind. There's more to be said, but you get my general idea there. I am conservative in some ways, just usually more fiscal rather than social ones.

Hobbies:
- I'm an absolutely *avid* gamer and enjoyer of great stories. With regards to gaming, I usually hyper-focus on 1-2 games and then have a smattering of all different kinds of stuff in alongside whatever that main game might be. At the moment that means loads of GTA RP and a little bit of a whole lot else.
- With my partner - I love watching movies, playing random spooky games with scared people watching, dragging friends into spooky games, and just chatting and kind of existing in a call while we do our own things. If we game together then awesome, but just kind of *being together* while not actually being together is nice too.
- Genres for entertainment? Action, Fantasy, Sci-fi, Family, Adventure, Drama, Horror, more!- I honestly love all kinds of music (Metal, classical, orchestral, K-stuff, J-stuff, you name it). That said, I'm not a big rap/hiphop fan
- I'm a general animal lover. Dogs, cats, all things cute and furry. Cats are def something I've never had and always wanted though!
- Reading! You'll almost always find me with a book or three in progress. Currently reading Supreme Magus by Legion alongside some various other things.- I'm a fan of all things humor, be it dark, raunchy, normal, etc.
Relationship stuffs:
- I'm a big texter and love calls. I love being in contact with my s/o little bits throughout the day, sharing memes, laughing at jokes, checking in from time to time. I'll usually be the first to send a good morning and the one to say good night.
- In-person, I'm a physical touch and cuddles kind of guy. I love showing affection through touching, cuddling, holding hands, snuggling up on the couch for a movie, etc. Just being able to show affection this way is one of my favorite things.
- I'm a very loyal and empathetic person. Once I decide that I like someone, I'm solid in my commitment to them and to making sure that I can do everything in my power to make them feel the same way that they make me feel. I'm not one to wander, think of others, or focus on the things about my person that aren't perfect. I take the good and enjoy it as best I can.
- I absolutely value communication. I'm open with what I think and feel, and hope that my partner is the same way. I don't like to hide things from them, and typically expect the same in return. It may end up being a lot from me if things make me feel passionately about them, but I'd rather you know than wonder.

General Bits:
I've been in... not very many relationships, and never in a "normal" relationship. I was in a 4.5 year long Long-Distance relationship as a late teen early 20's that ended with her cheating on me and getting knocked up, and a 7-month long relationship with a friend with whom things didn’t work out. Otherwise? I'm just a generally friendly and laughing kinda guy. I try not to take myself too seriously and try to keep things fairly simple and straightforward to the best of my ability. I'm a smartass, I joke, I pick, I try to make everyone feel as welcome as I can without breaking myself in the process. I'm opinionated but more than happy to hear opposing views.
Anyway, if you're still here, I'd love for you to reach out with some of your own interests, hobbies, and more! Maybe we'll be friends, maybe we'll be more? Only time will tell! :)

2024.06.04 04:27 prettydotty_ Anything like Legend of ShenLi?

Light spoilers:
I loved the compelling, strong, not push-over but still incredibly selfless, and emotionally mature fl. The healthy relationship between the two, the often vulnerable damsel-like ml who keeps arriving too late to things and only helps in the aftermath. The humor. the fact the sml didn't have a chance and she made herself clear immediately. I loved how the fl would call out the ml in his immature, petty, or sneaky behavior. Whenever he tried to be the domineering ceo character-type she just wasnt having it and i LOVED that. They were home to each other. How they empowered each other how they took their responsibilities seriously...It felt like an adult relationship. I enjoyed the humor, the other characters were interesting, compelling, flawed but root-for-able. I also enjoyed the age gap and the older sexiness of the ml. Ironically though, he was the least mature of the two haha. The amount of trope subversion this show had was amazing and was so well executed too. The other sml was hilarious and always a delight on screen. Overall, comedy was wonderful, even the side stories and filler-type episodes had a purpose and each of those actors absolutely owned their parts. Especially the immortal siblings. I enjoy costume dramas but it's not necessary. Other dramas I've enjoyed were:
New Life Begins. (The fl was a little annoying but the supporting characters were phenomenal and she grew a lot). Healthy relationship between the mains and complex characters all around them. Female empowerment. Fun to watch couple dynamics exploring all sorts of healthy, toxic but learning, and abusive relationships within one show. I watched it all very quickly.
LBFAD: it was sexy. What more can I say? I enjoyed the fl quite a bit because she was true to herself and her values. A character doesn't have to be physically strong for me to like them, just have a strong character. I don't care about the baby voice and thought that it was a good lesson for the ml to learn just because someone seems dumb and weak that doesn't mean they are and the strength of one's character matters most.
TTEOTM: I'm a big fan of vulnerable frail, needing to be saved ml's and their powerful female counterparts. I also like schemers. Blood spitters? Bring it on! I dropped it though when the ml and fl switched roles more and she wasn't having to save him all the time. Reading the novel instead and tbh enjoying it more. Im a big fan of simp mls!

2024.06.04 03:27 NewWays91 Re-evaluating Rosie O'Donnell (LONG POST)

If there's been 'a theme' to the 2020s besides one once in a lifetime event after another, it's been one of the comeback. Especially as it concerns film, a lot of stars who got big in the 90's and 80's are getting a resurgence and having their legacies reevaluated. The biggest example of this is probably the 2023 Oscars where all the acting winners were all people I definitely remember begging my mom to take me their movies when I was like 10. Especially as it concerns non-white and queer actors, there seems to be this period of atoning for the sons of the past. People are remembering why Michelle Yeoh is a force of nature. They're remembering why Angela Bassett is a powerhouse. One person who is probably up next for this is Rosie O'Donnell and I'd love to be the one to kick that off. If you bring her up now, I think a lot of people have this perception as rude, boorish, argumentative and loud. While she definitely can be some of those things a lot of stuff tends to get left out of the story when we talk about her. I think younger people might be surprised to know for a minute she was actually known as a pretty solid actress and popular personality in general for most of the 90's. Why did this perception change?
Before we get to that we need to go over how she got that perception in the first place. I think it's easy to overlook the fact that Rosie is actually a really good actress and a lot of the qualities that make her a good actress could also work against her later on. Every actor has a brand and persona they project in order to get roles and to get audiences on their side. Rosie's film career started in earnest in the early 90's. She was coming off a relatively successful stand up career as an insult comic and that grit translated well to screen. She brings an earthy, world weary, wizened energy to all of her roles and with the right script and director, she excels. A League of Their Own is a great example because she has to bounce off of so many other personalities, mostly as a grounding force, while still standing out herself. Rosie's coarse New York accent, stout yet strong body and plain yet expressive face all work together to help her project an image of strength and authority. You're going to listen to her when she starts talking. In Sleepless in Seattle, she plays the wise cracking good natured but tough talking best friend and editor to Meg Ryan's very flighty lead character. In Harriett the Spy, she plays a streetwise Mary Poppins type nanny who convincingly makes you believe an impressionable young girl would make her entire world. In Exit to Eden, despite the rather off-beat premise she manages to bring a realism to the concept of a cop going undercover in a BDSM resort. Even in The Flintstones, her Betty actually does balance out Rick Moranis' quirky and absent minded Barney.
A large part of why Rosie works onscreen is because unlike many other 'fat comedians' that became big in the 90's and beyond, that's not the totality of the joke. She's more similar to a female John Candy than a white Monique. Contrast her to Roseanne Barr who she gets compared to at times, especially back then. While they both have very crass and aggressive comedic styles that are aided by their larger frames, Roseanne's humor relied upon her being an unconventionally attractive woman who leaned into the slobbish idea people have of bigger women. Rosie doesn't do that. She's not afraid to be unattractive or be the butt of the joke. But the joke, at least on her part, usually has nothing to do with how she looks. She knows what her body looks like and her stand up occasionally poked fun at her but it was always on her terms. Where she often made fun of herself was that she is more masculine. She's not an out and out stud but she's not feminine. She plays feminine but she doesn't mind embodying a more butch vibe and playing up the comedy within that. But almost always, until the 2000's rolled around, she is the one with the agency. She's the one who is making the joke. She's the one in control. As I've mentioned in many other breakdowns about women in this industry, agency gave her power. This agency would come to an apex when she finally received her own show.
Before we get to that, let us briefly discuss the trend in the 90's of the transparent closet because it's going to become very relevant when we discuss the back half of Rosie's career. If you're much younger, you probably do not realize how bad it was back then to come out as gay. While we're not talking 1950's level of complete career obliteration, it wasn't exactly a fun experience to come out back then especially if you had reached the heights Rosie had by 1996. It was apparent to anyone with eyes, that Rosie was gay. It was apparent to anyone Ellen or Ricky Martin or Sean Hayes was gay back then too. But there's a difference between everyone snickering behind your back about how butch you are and them having a confirmation straight from the horse's mouth. This was the era in which the Defense of Marriage Act and Don't Ask, Don't Tell were put into place. This was the era where Matthew Shepherd and Brandon Teena were killed. The gay/trans panic defense was still alive and well. Rosie was very much a lesbian to anyone who had ever met a lesbian but in order to be the family friendly host of a daytime talk show, she had to remain closeted. Back then and arguably today in some circles, being gay ran counter to the idea of being wholesome or someone safe to market to children.
With all that said, it was a surprise to some when her talk show debuted that they were trying to market her as a family friendly, mild mannered and aw shucks type personality. While a lot of people didn't buy it, many did including myself who was around 6 or 7 when her show debuted. It's worth noting that this wasn't a Bob Saget style pivot, most of the qualities Rosie had brought to her show were those that made her film career rather successful. She's likeable but she's not saccharine. She's funny but she doesn't punch down. She's bawdy but she knows how to pull back and let everyone in on the joke. She's very outspoken but she's also articulate. She reminds me of a PTA mom who might've had a couple drinks. She's having a good time and she wants you to have a good time too. This was very effective for her, so effective that she dubbed the Queen of Nice. Rosie is very likeable and most of her characters rely upon that niceness and jovial personality with a slight edge, her show was no different. My hot take is that I think she was more suited for a late night show where she could cut loose a bit more and not be confined to the censors because she can be hilarious when she's allowed to speak her mind. See more recent interviews she did with Seth Meyers for an example. It's also worth noting that the aforementioned moniker isn't one she herself came up with or particularly leaned into. There's not much of a huge difference between Film Rosie and Talk Show Rosie, at least until later on.
Whatever shift people happened to notice in her largely happened after her interview with Tom Selleck not long after Columbine. I'm not here to break that down piece by piece but this interview is significant for several reasons. 1) it is the first time as far as I could find that gun control was discussed on this large of a public platform and 2) it was definitely the first time Rosie had been as openly political. I've watched this interview several times and my big takeaway was how respectful she was for the duration of the interview. The common thought is that she 'broke character' but that's not an accurate description. She's always been brash and forward and direct but this is the first time the public saw those qualities applied in an overtly political context. Daytime hosts back then really didn't do that unless you were Oprah and even she didn't do it to a celebrity guest. Maybe it wasn't the time, maybe she could have handled it better but for what it was I don't think she lost the plot. However that was not the conversation at the time. The conversation was essentially that Rosie had gone rogue.
The talk show actually lasted for about three years after that interview and while her popularity hadn't exactly taken a sharp turn yet she was definitely on the decline. Towards the end of the show, Rosie O'Donnell officially came out as a lesbian to advocate for gay parents and to protest laws that blocked them from adopting. All of the snickering behind her back was now done to her face and she became an enemy of the right wing. Rosie being Rosie didn't take this sitting down and dished it out as good as she got it. This didn't really do wonders for her public perception because society never likes it when a woman goes against the grain. Rosie O'Donnell was officially an Angry Lesbian™. Her stint on The View was the apex of this salacious sapphic persona and obviously everyone knows about her going toe to toe with Donald Trump, so I won't rehash that here. She was voicing a lot of opinions that were controversial at the time but have become the general consensus today. If the right wing hated her before, they made her the symbol of the wayward unpatriotic liberal now. But for what it's worth, none of this seemed to really to have bothered Rosie. If anything, coming out as gay and as 'a dirty, flithy commie' seemed to have liberated her and this is reflected in the latter half of her career.
In the 90's, Rosie played 'straight' characters but they were the most lesbian straight women you ever saw. She rarely kissed men in her roles. She always played the tomboy or a butch woman despite her character's relationship status. Her characters, outside of maybe Betty Rubble and in Exit to Eden, usually dressed in a way Rosie herself probably would. Even in Exit to Eden, she tells a submissive man to paint her house than anything remotely sexual. She never made the concerted effort to act or appear more feminine. She never did a sex scene for which I know both she and we are grateful. Although the idea of Rosie O'Donnell simulating sex with a man has me cracking up. For added comedic effect, imagine it with fellow transparent closet resident and registered Depraved Homosexual© Sean Hayes. After she came out, Rosie almost never played a straight woman again. The rose was of the bloom and she could do what she wanted. This is also my favorite era of Rosie's career because she truly did not and does not give a fuck about who she appeases or offends. Her most significant appearance in the phase of her career was as Tutu in Smilf. Here she plays a side we didn't get to see very often: her maternal side. She plays the coarse, tough talking somewhat overbearing mother of the titular Southie Mother I'd Like to Fuck and did it very well. She did play a straight character in this and it's probably one of the more layered characters she's played in a long time. She was in American Gigolo playing opposite Jon Berenthal playing a nonsense detective and she was on The Fosters as a tough but kind social worker. She was on the recent reboot of The L Word because of course she was. She's set to appear on Just Like That presumably replacing Che Diaz, the most unpopular lesbian on television since Ellen DeGeneres. She's leaned a lot more into the butch aspect of her personality but the well-intentioned warmth that has defined her entire career has never faded.
If anyone is due for a meaty role that reminds the general public why they were beloved, it's Rosie O'Donnell. In the over twenty years since she's come out, society has progressed a lot despite the best efforts of the same conservative voices that tried to bog her down back then. If anything, we could use someone like Rosie who isn't afraid to speak truth to power. She's my personal pick to host The Daily Show. Rosie's run in the 90's had plenty of dramas that showed she has the chops to pull this sort of thing off. While she isn't particularly feminine, she's not unbelievable in her roles as a straight woman. Rosie makes any situation feel real, no matter how outlandish it may be. She can play a wise cracking gorilla, a kindly maternal nanny, a tough as nails baseball player and a patient long suffering wife without skipping a beat. Truly Rosie is one of the most versatile flowers in the garden.

2024.06.04 03:15 guiltyofnothing “That's why your woman came to a young stallion like me, she got sick of fucking your limp baby dick and the dildo you got her. But the best was when we made it a 3 way with your mom, cause I dig the GILF's. Your mom sucks it good” /r/JoeRogan argues about a cop car

The Context:

/JoeRogan is a subreddit dedicated to “Joe Rogan, JRE, comedy, cars, MMA, music, food, psychedelics, science, mind-expanding revelations, conspiracies, insights, and fitness & health...and all other cool shit.”
A user posts a video of an LGBT-branded cop car in Toronto. The post uses the video to express incredulity over the state of “Trudeau’s Canada.”
Users begin to push back on assumptions made in the video, debate the use of what has been termed the “one joke”, and Trudeau’s role in this. In addition, other Redditors get involved in a sexually-explicit slapfight.

The Drama:

Things get very personal:
LGBTQ police is a clown show. It's not hyperbole. It's not my job to educate you in what red fascism is. Get an education.
They aren’t LGBTQ police, they are just normal police in a car that is showing support for trans people’s right to exist. God I can only imagine the stupid hateful shit your relatives said when bathrooms became desegregated in the south. (Also your first paragraph is 100% an example of hyperbole, as a member of the LGTBQ becoming a police officer has zero overlap with an actual clown show, but at least we know you don’t know what hyperbole means).
I never asked you to educate me on what those terms mean, what I asked is for you to explain what you mean without using hyperbole and buzz words.
Instead of spending time learning about fraudulent postmodern theories you should go to school and learn what they mean and ask for a refund from the education institution you attended.
You're an old fat fuck, get on your bike and off reddit. Go touch grass
Your mom is next to me and she says your like this because you have a micro penis. She says you took after your dad and you should just be ignored.
[Continued:]
Lol you have baby dick from using juice I bet
Actually your mom says it's the biggest BWC she's ever seen. Bigger than most BBC she's had and she loved those until she met me.
It's too bad your old bitch body has no testosterone anymore to even get that little baby dick up, even taking your TRT.
Your mom makes sure I get hard every time.
That's why your woman came to a young stallion like me, she got sick of fucking your limp baby dick and the dildo you got her. But the best was when we made it a 3 way with your mom, cause I dig the GILF's. Your mom sucks it good
[Continued:]
Your mom says the truth is your a trans woman on estrogen. She said your penectomy went well but the vaginoplasty not so much so you opted for a bussy.
But what of the filmer?
I know the guy filming identifies as a douchebag.
And you must identify as a little crybaby
Seriously, if someone doesn't think that was funny as shit, why are they even in a Joe Rogan sub? I watched in 5 times and laughed each time lol.
Can’t take a joke but can take dick smh
Is taking dick a bad thing?
[Continued:]
No? Did I say that? But not taking a joke is definitely a bad thing, no doubt.
I mean you were using it as an insult so it seems like you think being gay or taking dick is a bad thing.
One user objects to the length of Trudeau’s tenure:
Trudeau has been in power for a DECADE. WAY TOO LONG.
He has won three elections in a row. It is called democracy.
It'S cAlLed DeMoCrAcY. Really? Explain how it works.
What are you even arguing here? That’s literally democracy.
Who voted to paint cop cars with the LGBTQ flag? Are they the private soldiers for their cause?
[Continued:]
It's already explained honestly and factually how/why that exists in reality, (AKA cop cars promoting pride), in lucid and plain English.
Basic insight about how the Canadian hierarchy of leadership works though is: city=mayor / premier=province / prime minister = country
If you want to focus on fucking Trudeau, we can discuss that too.
Minority LPC pro LGBTQ far left red fascist government inacts FEDERAL LGBTQ legislation enforced by LGBTQ police.
BASICALLY LGBTQ minority government with its own laws and police. They're even building their own LGBTQ monuments in Ottawa the capital of Canada.
Ohhh you’re just brain-dead. Sorry for triggering you.
The “one joke” is called out:
Sigh One joke
Still funny
You’re a redditor.
Ew
You have more karma and posts than the average account and you did it in 8 months 🤣
[Continued:]
You post more in a day than I do in weeks. At least I’m not on your level lol
I'm not the one obsessed with complaining about Reddit. You're a loser and you can't ever leave this place 😂
I’m here for hobbies. You’re here all day making fun of strangers. Yet you call people losers.
Thus the username.
I hope your day gets better.
Who’s obsessed here?
And they say it's not being shoved in your face and you can just ignore it lol
Lol you fuckers think of gays fucking more than the gays
Nobody thinks about fucking more than gay men, nobody.
Nah bud that's just you projecting
Nah i know gay guys, you wouldn't even want to know their bodycounts.
[Continued:]
Isn't it amazing how horny most men are? The limiting factors for men are their looks, personality and especially sexuality. When men fuck men, there are very few limits.
Nah, you know men with low standards. If women had such low standards even you would have a high body count.
Hahaha what a fucking loser
Two get into a slapfight over blackface:
I knew blackface was wrong at 20. You didn’t?
What if it’s a joke?
Give me the blackface joke in context you enjoy
The it’s always sunny in Philadelphia Lethal weapon remake episode. When did everyone get so PC?
Your example is an actual commentary on blackface, you realize?
You remind me of the people that made Chapelle quit comedy where they only laugh at the ‘Rick James bitch’ part and not think any deeper about the jokes.
Your own episode example ends with a white savior gag. The joke in that context isn’t the blackface itself being the humor like Trudeau’s.
I’ll ask again. Do you have a personal example you enjoy that isn’t meta?
[Continued:]
That’s the only thing that came to mind. But a joke can be a joke without me thinking it’s funny or enjoying it. Never thought a comedians subreddit would be so uptight.
You keep saying it’s uptight, but can’t even give an example, which is entertaining from the pro-blackface guy
There’s a Tosh argument about how any subject is fair game at a comedy club, which I agree with.
There’s another argument that is just gaslighting, like blackface in the 2000s was normalized for everyone and standalone blackface gags were funny to anyone. That’s preposterous as a stance because like you, I can’t think of an example of that either.
There are funny instances playing up the offensiveness, like Downey and Always Sunny, but there isn’t a case of Trudeau’s ‘I’m black guys, get it?’
I don’t need an example. Also, don’t need you to feel a different way about this. You can be offended. You’re not the only one.
If you’re going to counter my point with ‘what if it’s a joke?’. A basic follow up question may be asked for the examples of the jokes you found funny as a reference.
Your critical thinking definitely fits on this sub
I don’t need to find something funny for it to be a joke.
[Continued:]
If you’re gonna defend its place in comedy, an example of the joke you find funny is necessary to at least see if what you’re arguing for even exists

2024.06.04 01:33 Pleasant-Criticism49 My boomer mom is a horrible person

So this happened the other day, I had to take my mother in to the ER because she was having some concerning symptoms (she’s fine, it was a stomach bug) and while we were there she starts commenting on people. She mentioned how weird some people looked and were dressed (most people were in work clothes or comfy clothes because they don’t feel well). My mom seems to have something against minorities and doesn’t hide it at all.
While we were sitting there an indigenous woman came running around the corner and let out an anguished cry, it was clear she had either lost someone unexpectedly or got some terrible news. I was starting to tear up watching her family hug her. It was at this point my mom perked up and said, “Looks like we’re missing all the good stuff.” I couldn’t believe it, to her this was like a tv drama. I know had it been a Caucasian woman she would have feigned sympathy but she took this as entertainment.
I wish this was a one off but she’s been like this for years, always saying inappropriate comments. I think she thinks she’s being humorous but she’s just being offensive.

2024.06.04 00:18 njdevils901 Some film reviews from 2024

Challengers (2024, Luca Guadagnino)
i'll be upfront and say i was not a fan of call me by your name, i thought it was dull and relied too heavily on its own idea of what it was, rather than a desire to become something singular. and yet here comes guadagnino's highest budgeted film. a mid budget vaguely erotic sports drama about a love triangle that falls apart and comes together as fastly as it possibly can. and to my shock it was pretty damn great. it obviously has issues as i think every film tends to have, but most importantly what he is able to accomplish here is a singular sense of demented hilarity in the love triangle nature to the whole film. i dig love triangles in films, in fact i think the best romance films need them to maintain a level of intensity at all levels. this is one of those, and it is very apparent almost immediately how luca is able to gain a majority of his tension from these three characters and how their sexualities aren't sort of an overflowing problem that they can't seem to escape from. and at the center of it are three great performances, zendaya's consistent scowl is quite funny to look at since it is not especially convincing, but she maintains a slow, brooding sense of humor to her performance that is wonderfully captivating. and to the film's strengths, and a majority of what makes it work is to the two guys. josh o'connor and mike faist, o'connor at the same time getting praise for another arthouse film (although much lower budget), and mike faist, the breakout star of west side story, here they both balance a tight act of manipulation that is brutal but ultimately mesmerizing. we love to see people fail, and i don't think i love seeing people manipulate and break each other down than anything else in cinema. a sports drama, that moves at a slow pace, but maintains the rhythm of an action film, with reznor & ross' score among the most pulsating and earworm-worthy scores in a long time in a major film like this. it is sneakily good, in how it pulsates the soundtrack, but acts as neverending avenue toward a driving tension that will finally break down, eventually. and then there's the simple but effectively blocking and shooting from guadagnino which i was shocked by its level of attention to detail considering the clips that were released. and then the little details that all cinema lovers like myself love, the idea that a young man with a whole rich family to fall back on is purposefully making himself an underdog, and how the subtle manipulations in faist and zendaya's scenes together come to form to where neither of them seemingly are on opposite ends of their own mental companionship. $50 million films like this are rarely made anymore, and the fact it is brinking on being a flop is a shame.
Auto Focus (2002, Paul Schrader)
demented, all lingering nuclear family happiness. a brutally depressing film, not just because it surrounding the story of a major celebrity being brutally murdered in his own home. but all of the circular rhythms that this film embodies at all level of character writing and performance. i particularly think of the scene of maria bello desperate to avoid being a housewife, and finding herself, becoming a housewife. there is always a sick sense of humor in paul schrader's work, here he finds another avenue to exploring sexuality and demented obsession once again. this in the avenue of a normal celebrity, a man who starred in hogan's heroes, a silly sitcom with the background of ww2. in pure irony the whole show was a facade of happiness during an era where there wasn't any, and the main star, bob crane, was a facade of happiness and family values which just distracted everyone as to what he was really doing behind the scenes. greg kinnear obviously continues his dedication to the material of a person who battles with their own psyche, something he also excelled at in something's gotta give. and yet here is gone the Hollywood schmaltz and the level of corporate tie-ins that a film of that level would bring. this is probably the highest budgeted level schrader has worked with in the past 25 years, and for good and bad reasons. this maintains a very low profile and that is part of what makes it work, it doesn't try to succumb to maintaining a legacy, it is just truthfully getting to the heart of sexual obsession and addiction that corrupts a man's mind until his life is taken down with it. willem dafoe is obviously the accused killer of bob crane, a man who is just as obsessed and addicted to sex. but sex addiction here is not viewed in a puritanical lens that matt lynch on letterboxd seems to think it is, it is instead viewed in the prism of a man who has everything and chooses to forgo it in search for some kind of "fun". schrader touched on the role of fatherhood in his film affliction, and 5 years after with this film he again touches on how this whole fatherhood ideal is just a facade for what is essentially decadence and depravity. bob crane isn't a flawed man because he enjoyed sex, he is a flawed man because he tried to convince everyone else he didn't, or that he had it under control. schrader shoots it all with a level of simple naturalism, but when the tension of the mental psyches of crane and his male companion come to fold, schrader seems to purposefully enact upon dafoe's actorly fears and obsessions that bottle up into a great final 15-20 minutes, where every single line delivery acts upon the one that comes after with sheer blows to the metaphorical face and head. it is a brutal film, death is an avenue that will eventually be reached no matter what, heartbreak isn't a science just a formality in a life of celebrity, and schrader again touching on how fatherhood is just a corruption for an addicted mental psyche that seemingly can't be broken.
*I'll continue writing reviews for films I have seen recently outside or in movie theaters.

2024.06.03 21:27 CaptainCrazyThe2nd My opinions on the episode “Brother’s Egg”

This episode is kinda meh for me. I was really excited we got to the episode with Professor Psychotic, but at the same time it didn’t really go in the direction I thought it would go. It did have some funny moments in there but this had to be the most depressing episode of the show. The part at the end where the brothers started fighting felt like something you’d see in a drama instead of an animated comedy with modern day internet humor. I’m an only child so I can’t speak from personal experience but this episode just felt too real for my liking. I liked the whole Jared Foggle bit at the beginning but aside from that there were only a few other parts I actually found funny. What did you guys think about the episode?

Filmes de terror que recomendo assistir em 2024

Cada um dos longas listados agrada certo tipo de público; mas na minha humilde opinião, todos são verdadeiras obras de arte, - ou quase.

6. A Morte do Demônio: A Ascensão Evil Dead Rise

1h 36min - (2023)

2024.06.03 20:53 Throwawayincali 38F4F in the great mitten state!

What I want: Cis women only between 30-40 for FWB (I want to be actual friends who have sex after hanging out on a random Saturday morning).
What I don’t want: a relationship beyond the above. No mascs/butch please. Chapstick to femme only.
What I like: books, reading, intelligence, shopping, makeup, hanging out at home, cooking, flirting, going out for brunch on Sundays or drinks on Saturdays, honesty, directness, tact, kindness, and humor. You have to be funny and make me laugh. Some outdoor stuff is awesome like boats, beaches, water, fall time. I love all genres of music (some more than others), learning things, dogs, elephants, whales, and animals in general.
What I don’t like: liars, playing games, carrying conversations by myself, super shyness, woe is me types, negativity, someone who never lets me in and shows me who they really are, hot humid weather, never giving out compliments, judgy people, not being open minded, lacking empathy. Birds freak me out.
Who I am: Capricorn, no kids, chapstick to femme depending on the occasion, employed, have my shit together, 420, overweight but cute af and put together. Dark hair, green eyes, multilingual, proud Palestine supporter. I’m drama and disease free and looking for the same.

2024.06.03 17:32 Forever_DM_Forever 26[M4F] Midwest/online - You probably aren't real, but just in case you're on reddit...

Stuff I'd really like us to have in common:
-music (mostly metal, rock, real r&b; winery dogs, pantera, stevie ray Vaughan, van halen).
-writing (d&d and rpgmaker).
-guns. I will pause a movie and and try to make out what kind of gun that was.
-cinema and movie trivia.
-WH40k (painting and also gaming). This is a big one.
-Left 4 Dead 2
-Soul Calibur 2 (unbeatable as Taki, untouchable as Mitsurugi).
-Berserk/elden ring
-Destiny 2, I hate destiny 2 and it's my favorite game.
-INTJ (very small potatoes; I understand that MBTI is not comprehensive or academic and would hope you do too lol)
Be a dork. Have a sense of humor. I don't mind weebs, I don't mind NEETs, I don't even mind femcels as long as they are self aware and not hostile. Age isnt ago huge deal to me and anywhere from like 19 to 35 is fine. I don't mind "deplorable language" as long as you're not actually a racist or homophobe or something. No tweakers, no cheaters, no political cultists. Basically be Kara Eklund lol. I just want someone that will actually take interest in and get excited about the same things as me and that I can make happy without weird drama. Psychos that seek out arguments are kinda been there done that. Just be sweet and sit on me a lot. I'm a sucker for green eyes and sundresses.

2024.06.03 15:42 Psychology_Dull End of Year Team Appreciation

I lead a toddler group of 14 and have three dedicated assistants in my room. I couldn’t ask for a better team! I want to give them something at the end of the school year to show how much I’ve appreciated their constant support in my struggles with admin and difficult parents, for always being calm and caring with the kids, for always showing up and doing their best, and for just being the most drama free, easy going group of women I’ve ever worked with.
Any ideas for how to spoil my super women? (All between 35-65, two vegetarians, all have a great sense of humor, my budget is $20-25 each)
