2024.05.23 07:02 shamansun My Homeworld 3 Review - 'A Question of Origin'

I'm someone who played the original Homeworld back in the day. The song that Yes wrote for the game is on regular playlist rotation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpLm4Nh7jNM
I loved the cosmic horror of Cataclysm (now called 'Emergence' thanks to Blizzard). I've sunk countless hours into HW3 and, eventually, the endless combination of mods that eventually became available. I was never great at RTS games, let alone strategy games, but there was something about Homeworld's enigmatic story, combined with its breathtaking music (which predated Battlestar Galactica by many years) and jaw-dropping visuals that simply transported my younger self into the game's heart-tugging odyssey. I was along for the ride, following the Kushan's journey across the stars, in search of Hiigara, 'home.'
As the band Yes sang, it 'was a question of origin.'
So this moment has been a long time in the making. That's what makes this moment especially weird, and, sadly, a little disappointing.
Like so many other players have been sharing in their reviews, I have mixed feelings after playing through Homeworld 3's campaign. Maybe it was the dramatic tonal shift between the game's trailers, which looked and sounded like what we've come to expect from a Homeworld game, and what we got in the finished game. Compared to the artful direction in the game trailers, the finished game's cuts-scenes look and feel rushed. The characters and script feel boilerplate. By the end of the short campaign (altogether 12 levels), I found myself nearly tempted to hit the space bar and skip the dialogue altogether.
Don't get me wrong. HW1 was lightning in a bottle. There was no reason to expect the developers to match it in the sequel, and from what I recall, that game's campaign wasn't very memorable, either. After all these years, and knowing that some of the original creators were behind the new game, perhaps I was expecting too much from HW3's campaign. Then again, I wasn't expecting so little.
There are moments, especially early on in HW3's campaign, that glimmer with the feeling and tone of the original games. "May the burden remain" comes to mind. Those moments are especially heartfelt, and you can tell that some love and care for the franchise went into the story, with a few callbacks and nods here and there for longtime fans.
The plot, however, is so uninspired and vague (especially its villain) that it makes these glimmering moments hard to appreciate. The campaign's game play is fun enough to enjoy. The maps are clever, and the ancient derelict super-structures are a lot of fun to work into your fleet strategies. I've already found myself requeuing for War Games and Skirmishes to experiment with different ways to utilize these structures (although I share the opinion that deep space maps are sorely missing from the game and just not Homeworld without them).
I don't share a lot of the vocal concerns about the game's lack of features. Those, I'm sure, are coming with patches and updates.
So what can I say? I'm left, sadly, with a similar opinion of Homeworld that I held before the release of this newest game.
If you're looking for a fantastic space opera story, Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm remain unmatched. Homeworld 3 is much like Homeworld 2 in that it's campaign is somewhat forgettable.
If you're looking to get this game and hoping for a good story, I'm sorry to say that this title falls drastically short. I'm reminded of Noah Gervais' excellent video essay, 'A Thorough Look at Homeworld,' where he described HW2's story as 'maddeningly bland... devastating to player investment.' Noah's analysis of HW2 is entirely, disappointingly dead-on accurate for HW3.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SALZWWPMKIA

Should You Buy Homeworld 3?

If you're looking to enjoy epic and colorful space battles, wait a few months for the patches to start rolling out. Think about grabbing it on sale.
Fortunately and from the looks of it, the game's developers seem to be pretty responsive, and I'm imagining they'll be scrambling to start patching the game and winning back the Homeworld community's trust (developers, you've heard the fans: give us those deep space maps).
It's clear that the developers were betting on the success of multiplayer and modding for HW3's longevity. So while Homeworld 3's short campaign may be unfixable, I think it's safe to say that the game's features and elements will keep improving and expanding.
Who knows, maybe they will even release new story content that listens to what the fans have been calling for. After seeing The Templin Institute's video essay which explored many of Hiigara's factions, it's hard to deny that the Homeworld universe is sitting on a wealth of intriguing stories that rival any of the great space operas of science fiction.
Here's hoping they tap some good writers and tell new stories, capture the imagination of a new generation.

2024.05.23 02:42 Etowno How much do you think was changed for season 2 with the exit of creator Brian Watkins + original writing crew?

As I understand it the original creator is not a part of production anymore. A quick look and all of the writers from season 1 are also not involved.
I enjoyed how season 2 turned out, but it did feel a little different from s1. I suppose it is possible that not much or nothing was planned for season 2 by the time they exited, but it seems some mysteries may have had similar reveals as what we got (like the reason for Rebecca's disappearance). Or maybe he left behind broad strokes that were followed (mostly). That's what seems the most likely to me.
How do you think it would have been different if Brian Watkins and crew wrote season 2?

2024.05.23 01:38 Maeggon I started watching the series a couple weeks ago and am here to yap about it

recently I learned with Kendrick Lamar that I wasnt hating on my full potential, so, here it goes
I have no words for this S04 ending besides fuck the creators, fuck the writers, fuck the producers, fuck the showrunners, fuck the editors, fuck the actors, fuck them mommas and even fuck them kids. not even 1 singular unit of working brain cell was present during the whole creation process, briefing, recording, editing, and airing of that shit to say "yeah, I dont think so"
no, I didnt like Rita. I have no clue if the actress is that good on portraiting someone that became stale and had to re-learn how to live while growing 2 kids basically alone after the whole trauma she suffered for years, or if she was a lame actress really trying to do her best for that paycheck at the end of the month. acting on the series isnt top tier, we have some bad, some ok, some good and even Cellulite Sally levels of acting and thats really ok. but some thinks cant fly, and her lame ass, uncerimonial ass, poor ass, pathetic ass, weak ass, trivial ass, feeble ass, flimsy ass, rushed ass, cheap ass, yee yee ass, unnamed filler credited as "Dead Woman #2" character ass death is one of them
the moment he was home and that murky actions filter wasnt off after dealing with Arthur I saw something was off. then her phone rang I really was "nuh uh. she do is dumb, but they really not gonna pull that one", then the baby conveniently started crying and I already knew that they either went to pull a "haha, u thought wrong and everyone is fine, its just Dexters daydreaming on becoming Arthur catching him" or they would do something really stupid. not even after the episode ended I was believing it wasnt just them edging the audience for the next season instead of letting us release and rejoice Dexter learning and becoming more of a "normal" human and how his CI panty collector stallion of a step-father was even more wrong about his code
I really came to the internet and search if she was really dead because I wasnt in the mood to start the next season today even before that scene and now Im here venting how frustated I am on this beatiful night after a really nice day for me while I reconsider if I keep watching. it would be way better a different ending than this shit or the books one since I also got spoiler on it and I dont think the series would go there too
tonights the night that I really hope everyone involved on the making of that scene steps on Lego and hit their pinkie finger on a hard slab tonight. I dont know and dont care if that was a big shock moment that skyrocketed discussions about the series 15 years ago how more recent shows did

2024.05.22 23:31 IncubateRx Let's admit it - Outer Range is horrendous

I'll caveat all of this with the fact that I binged 2 straight seasons; so there's certainly a level of interest and addiction to the mystery of the show. So there's that. And, really, this is my being upset with myself for not having the discipline to just turn it off.
I'll also say that Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Will Patton, and Tamara Podemski did a phenomenal job bringing to life what is an extremely tired, predictable, frankestein'd amalgamation of a number of shows that have already been done. The (very) few truer "western" parts of the show are frankly what keep it remotely engaging.
Now onto what's really grinding my gears...and apologies in advance as a lot of this is not MECE, and overlaps a bit with itself.
1/ The plotline. Painfully unoriginal. Truly - this is just a "multiverse" spin on Yellowstone. With less connective tissue or relevance than say Interstellar. This is truly one of the cases where you really are better off reading the Wiki and avoiding hours of literally nothing happening, except a couple of great scenes with the aforementioned actors. 1 scene each should do it though -- it's going to be the same thing over and over again from each of them. The real problem here - is that we're strung through a ton of episodes and time just to show us how the world works. The longer you take to show us, the more convinced I am that you don't know what you're doing, writers, and you're just winging it as you go. The real plotline -- with August/Royal -- is actually OK (even though it's basically Interstellar), but it's just way too forgotten in showing us how "craaaazy" this world is.
2/ The narrative weaving and call-backs. Other than a single, highly teased twist in the first season that you slowly, slowly, slowly wait for across 8 hours, there is very little continuity in the show. Plot twists and new lines of plot are forced in with little-to-no interesting narrative, nor any explanation to it. Despite this, it's painfully obvious what's happening, yet they continue to tease it out. It's also wildly evident that the show creators thought there was no chance for a season 2, as evidenced by how little set-up there was for any future seasons.
3/ The build. There's no twist in Season 2. I must say -- I am ashamed I watched it. Painful, unoriginal, and absolutely no impact on the end vision.
4/ The "ore". What a cheap explanation with little to no boundaries. Again, semi-ripping off of another concept of "spice". They effectively constantly change its abilities/properties to fit whatever plot holes they need fixed. The writers are running out of good ideas and have to leave themselves massive gaping holes of plot tricks to later on decide to invent something and act like it's been there the whole time.
5/ The time travel convenience. I'll hold my breath on going in on this one until maybe there's some logical explanation as to why they travel to very convenient/specific time periods when they jump in the hole (maybe some greater force pulling the strings?). But as it stands now, it seems ridiculous that magically they all just happen to end up at the exact point that the plot needs them to be. Perry at pre-Trevor night; Perry at young Royal time; Royal at the future (maybe this was intentional, but everyone else's reactions did not seem it)...But wait! Now Joy gets to experience it and she goes to...a part of her family heritage? Oh, but no, wait -- there's Royal! There it is.
6/ The writing and cheap plot tricks. I've referenced this already in all the other pieces, but it warrants being said again. It's a terribly written show. And I mean truly, truly terrible. The dialogue is mediocre at its absolute peak, and lazy on average. So much of it is built in here to tease out "properties" and "functions" of this world and the time-traveling, but it's all just a little too convenient. The whole set-up is to show to us in Season 3 how multi-verses interact with each other. Just cut to the chase, and get on with the actual plotline.
Maybe a hole will pop up nearby any future viewers so they can jump in and just tell the writers that this should actually just be a movie, and actually think and condense the plot.
Where do you disagree?

2024.05.22 21:37 mcm8279 [Matalas joins Marvel] No time for Star Trek: Legacy? Marvel Sets Vision Series for 2026 With Paul Bettany, ‘Star Trek: Picard’ EP Terry Matalas as Showrunner (Variety)

VARIETY:
"Marvel has tapped “Star Trek: Picard” executive producer Terry Matalas to resurrect Vision, the synthezoid played by Paul Bettany, for a new, untitled Disney+ series set for 2026, Variety has learned exclusively. Bettany will return to the role and Matalas will serve as showrunner. [...]
Marvel brought in Matalas after his work running Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard” — which brought back the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” to widespread acclaim, garnering Matalas a WGA award nomination for the 2023 series finale — greatly impressed the top brass at the studio. (Marvel chief Kevin Feige, an avowed Trekkie, even recently appeared with Matalas on a two-hour episode of the “Star Trek” podcast “Inglorious Treksperts.”)
An earlier version of a Vision series had been in development with “WandaVision” creator Jac Schaeffer, but Schaeffer’s attention turned to running a separate “WandaVision” spinoff, “Agatha All Along” with Kathryn Hahn, that is set to premiere in September.
With Matalas coming on board, this will be Marvel’s first new live-action series pickup in almost two years, representing a significant shift in how the company produces television for Disney+. Originally, Marvel adopted a features model, hiring head writers to create predetermined (and, often, already announced) shows, but assigning most leadership responsibilities to the directors and creative executives. Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation Brad Winderbaum recently told Variety that, starting in 2022, the company began to shift to a more “traditional approach” to TV, with a lengthier development period and a return to hiring writer-producers to oversee the entire production as showrunners. The company is also rebranding its live-action TV output to Marvel Television and reducing the number of shows it makes to roughly two per year, down from as many as four. [...]"

2024.05.22 19:04 Representative-Tax12 What I am most excited for in the announcement...

Is them bringing in new content creators and to give them a platform. That's what YouTube was to a lot of these people who are now doing their own channels. I kind of hope they have contests so fans have the opportunity to get exposure to their content, kind of like how Mythical got one of their writers through one of their contests.

2024.05.22 18:50 Artistic-Grab-2 Pihlosophical Graffiti YouTube Video

Hello !
I am looking for a YouTube video I saw about 4 years ago. It followed one graffiti writer, somewhere in the USA. The shots and production quality were quite artful. He added a very poetic narration to the video, about graffiti and life, it was quite philosophical and calming. He never showed his face but from the way he spoke and looked, I would say he was about middle aged. It sounded like he had been doing it for quite a long time. He painted some trains & buildings in train yards, both at night and in the daytime. It might have been Portland or California, seemed to be West Coast USA from what I can remember. I'm not sure if there was music in the video.
The video was about 30 minutes to an hour in length, if I recall correctly. I found the whole thing quite calming and refreshing to see a graffiti writer with such a philosophical and calm deameanor.
If this rings any bells please let me know! I forgot to favourite it/bookmark it, and have been trying to find it for a while now.
Cheers ! :)

2024.05.22 18:12 adulting4kids Flash Fiction Prompts

This is taken from and is copyright protected by globalsoup.net, a website that promotes flash Fiction with annual writing contests.
I am reprinting these Flash Fiction Prompts because they are outstanding ways to freewrite and offer plenty to work with for those who want to learn how to write Flash Fiction.
So check out these prompts and the article and work some of them into your journal! Post the best responses!
100 Awesome Flash Fiction Prompts - Plus Bonus Prompts!
We’ve put together 100 flash fiction prompts, each one designed for a very short story. These prompts will probably be best suited to a story of between 300-1,000 words. If you want to write a longer story using these prompts, you can easily expand these ideas to fit a story of any length.
What is flash fiction?
Flash Fiction is defined as a very short story that can be anywhere from just a couple of words to about a thousand in length. The beauty (and difficulty) of writing flash fiction lies in trying to tell a complete story in so few words. Great flash fiction is succinct, emotive, thought-provoking, and impactful.
What’s the difference between flash fiction and a short story?
The only difference between flash fiction and a typical short story is the word count. However, this scarcity of words means that writing flash fiction can feel like a completely new skill. Just like the short story is a different animal to the novel or novella; flash fiction is kind of unique.
When writing flash, you’ll need to use fewer characters, a simpler plot, and you’ll have to make each word count. This is why editing is so important. You have to be brutal. Cut out everything superfluous and really make sure each and every word is performing an important function in the story. If you’re interested in writing very short fiction, why not check out drabbles? Drabbles are stories of exactly 100 words in length, and they can be a great way to practice keeping your stories very, very short.
How to plot a flash fiction story
When you sit down to write flash fiction, you must begin by choosing an appropriate plot. You cannot simply use a short story plot and tell it using fewer words. A typical flash fiction plot is like looking at one part of a story under a microscope.
For example, let’s look at prompt #21 in our list of 100 Flash Fiction Prompts:
  1. Two people on a sinking ship must decide who should take the last seat in the last lifeboat. If you were writing a novel about a sinking ship, you’d probably want the actual sinking to be the climax of the story. Of course, there are infinite ways to write a novel about a sinking ship, but this would structurally be the most obvious. You’d use the first part of the novel to introduce your characters and describe the voyage leading up to the sinking and the sinking of the ship would be the dramatic climax, leaving the last part of the book as the resolution.
The golden rule of writing short stories is to begin as close to end as you can. So, to turn the same story from novel to short story, you’d probably want to begin with the ship sinking. You haven’t got time to introduce the characters before the action begins, so you’d need to feed in exposition and backstory here and there during the events.
All stories need a good climax. So, you would find the most dramatic moment in the story and build up to it. Perhaps your climax would be the two main characters having to decide who will take the remaining seat on the last lifeboat.
Finally, you need a resolution. In a longer short story you do have time to bring in some kind of satisfying resolution at the end.
But, if you’re writing flash fiction and your story is only a few hundred words, you really need to zoom in on one tiny moment in that story.
You don’t have time to tell the entire story of a sinking ship, but you can turn one moment into a story.
We’ve chosen the lifeboat situation as the key moment in this hypothetical story. Two characters must decide which one of them will take the last seat on the last lifeboat. This is an appropriate plot for flash fiction because it’s simple, high-stakes, dramatic, and thought provoking.
Not all flash fiction will have a plot quite this dramatic, but all great flash fiction will have a plot that can be expressed in just one or two sentences.
If you have a plot in mind, but it seems more suitable for a longer story, you can sometimes find several flash fiction plots hidden within it. Just look for little stories within the story, like the lifeboat moment in our hypothetical tale of the sinking ship.
This brings us to our top tip for coming up with ideas for flash fiction stories:
if you’re ever stuck for ideas, you can find little stories within the story in books, movies, and TV shows. A full length feature film might have as many as 20 little incidents in it that could easily be flash fiction.
Don’t directly write a story based on the film, though. Just carefully pick out those little moments, write down what’s happening as a one or two sentence plot, and then use it to inspire your own, completely original flash fiction story.
One of our 100 Flash Fiction Prompts was actually taken from the movie Pulp Fiction!
How to write very short flash fiction
There are several reasons writers might start writing flash fiction. Of course, it could be that they just love and enjoy the form, but sometimes they’ll be a more strategic and practical reason at play.
Perhaps they want to practise the process of writing stories within the confines of a certain word limit. Maybe they are trying to develop a daily writing routine and they don’t have a lot of free time. It could be that they’re trying to break a habit of not finishing writing projects, or perhaps they are entering a flash fiction competition.
Whatever the reason, very often when we sit down to write flash, we must work under an imposed or self-imposed word restraint. We’ve set ourselves (or been set) the task of keeping the story under a particular number of words.
So, how do you plot a flash fiction story when you have to keep your story very, very short.
We’re not going to discuss stories of 100 words or fewer here. Technically, those stories are still flash, however, we prefer to categorise 100 word stories as drabbles and anything under 100 words as micro fiction.
But what if you have to keep your flash fiction story under, let’s say, 300 words? How do you write a flash fiction story that short?
The answer is: get your microscope out again. Remember earlier when we said writing flash fiction is like looking at part of a story under a microscope? If you have to write very short flash fiction, you’ll need to zoom in even further.
Let’s look at a couple of examples from our 100 Flash Fiction Prompts:
  1. During a match, a young boxer must decide whether to throw the fight.
If you had 1,000 words to devote to the story, you could have time to tell the story of the entire fight. With only 300 words, it might be better to zoom in on the very moment when the boxer must choose whether or not to go down.
In a longer flash fiction story you might have time to go into detail about why he’s in this situation and why he’s so conflicted. In a 300 word story, you might only devote one or two sentences to his gambling debt and the large sum of money waiting for him if he goes down in the third round, as instructed.
  1. A family must decide what to take and what to leave behind as a wildfire approaches their home.
If you had 1,000 words to devote to this story, you might be able to write about the whole process of choosing what to take and what to leave behind. You might be able to mention many different choices and have the whole family participate in the story. You’d be able to go into some details about certain choices and the stories behind individual objects or mementos, as well as the implications of choosing certain things over others.
With only 300 words, it would be advisable to zoom in on one member of the family and to focus on one profound and important choice.
How to write a flash fiction story
Now you have your mini plot, you still need to make sure your flash fiction feels like a complete story. It should still have a beginning, middle, and an end.
Just like a short story, you may need to bring in a little exposition here and there to give texture, context, backstory, and to bring some depth to the characters. But, unlike a short story, you won’t necessarily need to end with a full, detailed resolution. It’s quite common for a flash fiction story to end with a quick twist or plenty of ambiguity.
Flash Fiction is much more about eliciting emotions and provoking thought, than setting up and resolving a complex story.

Knauf: This is the last time I’m going to talk about this. I’ll be totally straight. The first day I came on the show we were all gathered in the writer’s room and Jon and John stood up and told us “Okay here is this thing, we are swearing you to secrecy. Do not discuss this, do not reveal this, Red is actually transgender. He used to be a woman and he’s hiding in a male body. And we all went, Wow, that’s kind of cool. Keep in mind this was a long time ago. This was before transgenderism was like a big… but now, now if they’d actually DONE IT, like actually done a big reveal, it would’ve felt like such a you know also-ran … oh you did it because it’s so popular now or, you’re so woke, or some bullshit. Back then though it was truly, I mean, a remarkable turn of events for the main character.

2024.05.22 14:19 OnThatTrain Is this game really game of the year? An opinion after 1500h

Yes.
I could just leave it at that, but I'm feeling rant-y. So, after 1500 hours in the game, having played every patch from the first early access to the most recent one, I feel like I have a lot of opinions.
For some context, I'm a long-time dnd player, and I picked up this game to scratch that itch in-between campaigns. Does it feel like playing dnd? No, not really, but I feel like it's pretty much as close as it can get in a video game as of now. Special mentions for all the class/subclass and race-specific dialogues, that really makes it more immersive.
The thing I like the most about this game is definitely the companions and their stories. Some of them took me longer than others to warm up to, but now I have some sort of affection for all of them. The writing for them is great (even if it's obvious that some have received more love from writers than others).
Now for the points I normally use to rate whether a game is good/worth my money or not:
Is it pretty?
Is it replayable?
Is it balanced? Too hard? Too easy?
Is the community nice?
Is the story good? Is it coherent? Do player choices matter?
Is it worth the money?
Is the muliplayer good?
Is it very buggy? Any performance issues?
Any other thoughts?

2024.05.22 12:01 AutoModerator Request Wednesday - All Mod Requests go here

Got a request for a mod? Please post it here
What are some good steps to making a suggestion?
- Be clear on what you want
- Be reasonable. Making mods is not a small effort. Suggesting massive mods is going to be unrealistic.
- Be willing to help. Everyone has ideas for mods, and most content creators already have things they want to create. If you have ideas for a mod, be willing to learn how to do some of the steps yourself. Most requests stating "I'm just the writer" or "I'm just here for ideas" will not be accepted by creators.
- Be respectful of the content creators. Don't make demands, offer ideas.

This episode was the last Twilight Zone filmed from the original series.
Writer of this Twilight Zone episode was Anthony Wilson. Wilson was the creator of the mid-1960s TV series 'Land of the Giants' and 'The Invaders', along with developing 'Planet of the Apes' for television in the mid-1970s.

The song playing throughout the episode "Come Wander with Me" was created by Jeff Alexander (musical score) and Anthony Wilson (lyrics). Bonnie Beecher performed the song.

"Bonnie, Why'd You Cut My Hair?" early Bob Dylan song snippet -- audio only 1.5-minute YouTube clip
[Note: Read the backstory of this song within the description of the YouTube video while listening]
Bonnie Beecher rarely allows interviews unless it serves a greater purpose to inform and educate people about social issues. Here are a couple of of interviews, decades apart, where Beecher (now Romney) talks about her early relationship with Bob Dylan and their interest in exposing the conditions that Woody Guthrie (leader of the folk music genre which heavily promoted American socialism and decried fascism) endured locked in a psychiatric hospital during his final years of life. Guthrie died in 1967 at the age of 55.

Personal observation: In a way, this episode is a representation of the quick rise and fall of the 1960s folk music revival. 'Mary Rachel' is a purist. She feels the music is personal and shouldn't be exploited for profit. 'Floyd Burney' is a hardcore capitalist seeking to milk audiences under the guise of sincerity. The music means nothing to him except as a way to cash-in and make a quick buck while popularity of the music style is hot.
By the mid-1960s, performers of folk music were turning on each other as being shallow exploitation artists. Woody Guthrie was attributed (according to Dylan fans) with saying "Pete Seeger is a singer of folk songs, but Bob Dylan is a folksinger". Meanwhile Pete Seeger was rumored to wanting to sabotage Dylan's electric performance at the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival saying "Man, if I had an axe I’d cut the cable right now. I really was that mad.” Paul Simon's song "A Simple Desultory Philippic Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission" was a savaging of Dylan complete with a mocking vocal parody. As history reveals, everything changed when Dylan went electric. It was downhill from there. End of Personal Observation

Born Bonnie Beecher on April 25, 1941(now going by Jahanara Romney) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Beecher briefly dated Bob Dylan in early 1960 before Dylan gained notoriety. Some of Dylan's earliest recordings were taped at Beecher's home.
Beecher's television debut was in 1964 on "Come Wander With Me". Bonnie Beecher began picking up guest starring roles on a dozen series ending in 1968 on Star Trek's "Spectre Of The Gun".
On May 22nd 1967, Bonnie Beecher married Hugh Romney (known as 'Wavy Gravy'). The two helped form what was referred to as The Hog Farm which was the first hippie commune on wheels and acted as the security force at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Gary Crosby was born on June 27th 1933 in Los Angels, California. The first child of Dixie Lee and world renowned entertainer Bing Crosby.
The Bing and Gary Crosby duet "Play A Simple Melody" recorded in 1950 became the first record to sell a million copies and became the first double-sided gold record 3-minute YouTube audio only (paired with the flipside "Sam's Song")
Gary Crosby started his entertainment career as a singer (along with his brothers bore by Dixie Lee), but Gary knew that he would never step out from under Bing Crosby's monolithic crooning shadow.
Of Gary Crosby's experience on Twilight Zone he told a reporter for Tele-Views in 1964 "this episode let me do a little bit of acting instead of saying lines and running for my life". Actors never got a pre-screening of their own Twilight Zone episodes. Gary continued in the same article "I'm waiting to see it. I'll either have pride in myself or run and hide out. I'm praying. But I think it came off pretty good."
On Gary's casting in this episode, director Richard Donner stated in a 1981 issue of 'The Twilight Zone Magazine' that "Gary Crosby's agent sent him in to us at a time when we were considering someone totally different. He had practically memorized the script before he came into my office. He did a reading for me that was so brilliant that I immediately said 'that's it -- Gary Crosby'. He's a very flexible, very good actor."
Gary Crosby's two longest acting roles were as a scheming bellhop on 'The Bill Dana Show' (1963-1964) and unhip, antagonistic police officer Ed Wells on 'Adam-12' (1968-1975).
Gary Crosby burnt down bridges with fans and the entertainment industry with his tell-all book "Going My Own Way" published in 1983. In the autobiography Gary revealed his famous father to be physically and emotionally abusive to his children. All of the salacious stories came out six years after Bing Crosby's death. Gary Crosby's career went ice cold after the publication.

Gary Crosby died of lung cancer in Burbank, California August 24th 1995 at the age of 62. It should be noted that two of Gary's younger brothers, Lindsay and Dennis, both committed suicide by firearms at the age of 51 and 56 in 1989 and 1991.

Hank Patterson was born October 9th 1888 in Springville, Alabama. Patterson originally wanted to be a serious piano player by settled as a vaudevillian piano man to earn money.
Hank Patterson didn't start his acting career until the age of 51 (uncredited in Roy Rogers' "The Arizona Kid" 1939. Patterson quickly became a sought after character actor in dozens of Western films and TV shows. In the 1950s Hank Patterson appeared in a handful of science fiction movies in bit parts.
Hank Patterson appeared in a total of three Twilight Zone episodes: "Kick The Can", "Ring-A-Ding Girl", and "Come Wander With Me".
Hank Patterson's immortal claim-to-fame was as the hayseed farmer, Fred Ziffel, raising Arnold the pig as his own child on CBS' rural comedy trilogy 'Petticoat Junction' / 'Green Acres' / 'The Beverly Hillbillies'.
By the mid-1960s, Hank Patterson was completely deaf but extremely popular as 'Fred Ziffel' that the Green Acres cast and creators accommodated the impairment. A character Patterson portrayed from 1963 to 1971.
Hank Patterson died August 23rd, 1975 at the age of 86.

This was the last of six Twilight Zone episodes directed by Richard Donner. All six were shot in the fifth and final season of the original Twilight Zone run.
Donner stated "When we filmed that particular episode, I had just seen 'Sunday In Seville' and I insisted that the entire thing have that misty, backwoods look. We had so much smoke in the back lot that the fire department came out; and then the production department got mad at us because we'd lose shots when the wind would come up."
The grave marker for 'Floyd Burney' was a recycled prop from "Mr. Garrity And The Graves". Burney's name was put on the back of the marker while the front side (not shown) had markings from the previous production.
The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits frequently shared MGM lot locations and props. The bridge seen at the opening of the Twilight Zone episode was the same as The Outer Limits show "The Children Of Spider County". The guitars hanging in the wooden shack on the Twilight Zone are also seen in a pawnshop for The Outer Limits episode "Controlled Experiment".
Fifth season producer, William Froug, had claimed that he interviewed Liza Minnelli for the role of 'Mary Rachel' but she was too nervous. Froug had a consistent pattern of misremembering and/or misrepresenting the truth in multiple interviews about Twilight Zone. This bit of trivia can be described as "his truth" although there are no other records or personal accounts to verify that Liza Minnelli ever ventured into the Twilight Zone production offices.

2024.05.22 08:39 OkBluejay9555 Is it worth studying computer engineering for the sake of knowledge itself?

I want to be a gaming news and review article writer, content creator, and streamer for a living however I am particularly intrigued by gaming hardware and how it works. Should I go to school for computer engineering? I already have the gen-eds completed through running start.

2024.05.22 06:16 Excaliber142 Thoughts on that amazing finale (Spoilers, duh!)

What a finale! It was nothing short of spectacular, a fitting conclusion to a truly remarkable show. Often, series finales struggle under the weight of tying up countless loose ends, burdened by the pressure of deadlines. This can result in endings that fall short, doing a disservice to the characters we've grown to love. Yet, there are those rare gems, like "Archer" or "Bojack," where the creators eschew convention, crafting endings that are uniquely beautiful.
This finale, however, stands out as something truly special. It delivered a conclusion worthy of a series that has been a part of my life for over a decade. From freshman year of high school to college, grad school, and now a job on the other side of the country, this show has been a constant companion, shaping countless memories and friendships along the way.
For an ending that does so much service, it is wrong for the audience to do it so little. I had to rewatch the ending a couple of times to truly appreciate it. So many subtle jokes, callbacks and character growth. As a fan of the shisno storyline it saddened me a little to find out it was a simulation, but after watching the explanation of Church/epsilon running the simulations and literally tearing himself apart to find a solution to save his crew? Masterful storytelling. And that’s the thing with this finale, it was masterfully done. Comedy mixed in with seriousness at just the right moments. It would have been so easy for the comedic elements of the reds and blues to cheapen the emotional moments, but it was so beautifully worked in.
Not every character made an appearance, and that's okay. Not everyone needed to be a part of this storyline, the reality is that the reds and blues have been fragmented through years of battle. People move on and don’t necessarily get a great ending. What upped the stakes for this last hurrah was that the consequences not only felt real but were real. Sarge’s death came as a massive shock, and I actually could not believe they would kill a main character like that. But after that scene, nothing was off the table; the final battle was not some normal reds and blues battling the bad guy. Our beloved characters could actually die, and that heightened my experience.
Let's talk about character growth. Caboose's transformation from comic relief to a source of empathy and strength was particularly moving. Going from “Tucker did it” to “I’m sorry you’re going through this, its not your fault”. Tears man, what a stoic moment. Also having the wherewithal to finally end the AI’s even though it meant killing his best friend. “I’m going to be sad for a while”, same Caboose, same.
Sarge died in the most Sarge way possible, walking one of his own back from the depths of hell. A true leader with a fitting end for a character who embodied loyalty and sacrifice. I am so glad the writers did not cheapen his death with some slapstick comedy and made it a solemn moment throughout the ending. Paying homage to his memory and using it as springboard to make the other characters better. Grif finally got discharged, it was all he ever wanted, but not before making the conscious decision to stay for one last battle. Character growth doesn’t get much clearer than that.
And that final battle? It was a testament to brilliant storytelling, deftly weaving together past conflicts and character arcs into a thrilling conclusion. Stories have this problem when they create a monolith enemy, someone that is so strong that the heroes need a deus ex machina to win. I honestly could not anticipate how they were going to beat the Meta until the very last bit where the final plan was revealed. Brilliant storytelling bringing back a character skilled in handing it to the reds and blues while training the AI enemy on how to fight like a red and blue. Not only is this next level writing, but it sticks true to the modus operandi of the crew, they fight by taking a galactic whooping and outlasting the other guy haha.
Finally let’s talk about the nostalgia hits. Returning to Blood Gulch for the finale was a nice touch, bringing the story full circle. That montage of Grif, Simmons, and Caboose around Tex reminiscing about the story just sent me. The “Cone protect me!” and “How is this physically possible?!” scene were favorites. I didn’t notice though until a second rewatch that most if not all of those scenes they were remembering involved Tex, a hint to who Caboose was really trying to bring back. Just another layer of nuance.
To Rooster Teeth: thank you for crafting an ending that honors the legacy of a show that has meant so much to so many. It truly feels like the end of a chapter in my life, and for that, I'm grateful.
Bow chicka bye now.

2024.05.22 06:14 thebmanvancity Baby Lornedeer

I'm sure many of you weirdos are familiar with the new show "Baby Reindeer." It's a gripping series based on true events experienced by the lead actor, who was brutally stalked by a woman named Martha, a character inspired by a real person. All the characters are based on private individuals except for Darrien, who represents a TV writer whose identity hasn't been disclosed. The show's creator, Richard Gadd, was relatively unknown before the series gained popularity. This makes me think that if a series like this can exist, an equally or even more captivating series about Lorne Armstrong could be made.
