2024.06.01 15:13 redemral Trip Report from first time visitor - Amazing!

I asked for advice a few times from this sub and I just wanted to come back and share how much we loved our visit!
I'm from the US (Florida) and have been wanting to go to Alton Towers since I was a kid playing Rollercoaster Tycoon. I'm also a huge B&M invert lover and horror lover, so Nemesis was my dream coaster and top of the bucket list.
I've been a traveling theme park enthusiast my whole life and I've been over to the UK a few times in my life but never made the effort to get to Alton Towers until this year - honestly so overdue.
We went mid week in late April, away from holidays. The park was generally pretty dead, as expected. We did two and a half days. I'm glad we had that much time as we got to do everything multiple times. Weather was good - cool, and only hit major one rain of the days and only for a couple hours.
Here's my thoughts on each ride (approximately in order of ranking), then I'll talk about feedback on the park overall and the hotel:
Nemesis - Amazing! Loved it, absolutely worth the trip. I adore the horror theme and the scenery is gorgeous. I wish it was a slightly longer ride (of course that's a theme with Alton Towers), so I can't quite say it is my favorite B&M invert overall - I think that title still belongs to Montu. But it is very close and I would say a top 10 coaster overall.
Smiler - Loved it! I was not sure I would as I read many things about it being rough, and I am roughness sensitive. Honestly I can say, I did not find this to be a rough coaster. For comparison, at Thorpe Park, Saw and Colossus are pretty much not rideable because of how rough/painful/headbanging they are. Smiler, no, not at all.
I wasn't expecting Smiler to become one of my all time favorite coasters but I think it did. I heard the front row is the only good row - did not find that to be the case either. The front row is best but it's not by much, I found it to be a good ride in every row. Left me slightly dizzy after each half of the ride, but not in a bad way.
Wicker Man - Loved it! I'm not a huge wooden coaster fan overall because I don't have a huge roughness tolerance, but thankfully Wicker Man is not at all rough. I love the theme and the pre-show. The ride is pure fun. We were lucky enough to get a front row ride which was my favorite.
Thirteen - I think this is overhated - I really enjoyed it! The theme is great (I do love horror themes) and I don't mind that this is more of a family coaster. The only thing I would really want to improve it would be a slightly longer drop and an animatronic instead of a static set piece in the drop room.
Galacticair - Despite never having been here before, I've always thought of this coaster by its original name. Really enjoyed it! I'm not the biggest fan of flying coasters in general, and I think I do like that this is less intense than some of the others.
Alton Towers needs to get on a retheme, scenery, and paint job for it though. It's looking a bit rough and could use some love.
Oblivion - It's a fun drop. The first time I rode it, I was like - I walked all the way through this massive queue line for that? I didn't realize it really is literally JUST the drop. Unfortunately I'm spoiled by having Sheikra at my home park. But the second time riding and knowing what to expect, I was like - yeah, this is a really good drop and the black hole theme is cool.
Spinball Whizzer - It's a spinning coaster. You like them or you don't like them. I like them alright - although Dragon's Fury at Chessington was actually amazing. Spinball Whizzer is alright.
Runaway Mine Train - This is a cute family coaster, good fun. I love the long train. Our ride op sent us around 3 times. Only rode this once which was enough to get the idea but I will definitely ride it again next time.
Rita - This is the only coaster at Alton Towers that I'm not really a fan of. Rode twice, first time back row, second time waited for front row. It's worth the wait for the front row. It's a bit rough for me otherwise. Before coming, I honestly thought - who cares if it's just the launch, I love launches! But for whatever reason this launch is kind of mediocre and then the rest of the ride is somewhere between painful and boring.
Non coasters:
Curse at Alton Manor - Loved it! I'm spoiled having been to Disney/Universal a good bit, and I know Alton Towers does not have the budget to produce the same caliber of dark ride - but Curse is really quite outstanding considering that limitation. Love the theme (as usual with the whole park) and they tell a really good story.
Nemesis Sub Terra - I don't think this deserves all the hate it gets. It's a cool experience - maybe not especially rerideable, and the "ride" portion is underwhelming, but it was a fun one time ride. I do wish cooler stuff happened with the egg. Also, the part where it whips your legs really hurt.
Gangsta Granny - Rode it once, it's very cute considering it cannot be Disney level. I do not mean to sound spoiled and hope that I don't - I just know what is theoretically possible with a dark ride, but given budgets, this a very cute family ride.
Dungeon - Did the London one a few years ago and remember liking that better, but this wasn't bad at all. It was a fun time and I'm glad I did it, especially with the Merlin pass discount. Unlikely I'd spend the time to do it again on a return visit. I know it's closing this summer, not sure if that's permanent, but honestly if it was permanent and they replace it with something else, I think that would be just fine.
Hex - Booooooo it was closed. Gives me something else to look forward to when I return, which I hope to do whenever Project Horizon is done.
Food:
Rollercoaster Restaurant: Did this both nights we stayed here. It was mostly alright, I had a burger that was pretty good. The nachos were a joke. The curry chickpea thing was decent. The gluten free menu was pretty pathetic, but at least they had some options so that my husband could eat dinner.
Middle Eastern restaurant by Wicker Man (I forget its name): This was the only place to get a meal in the park that had GF accommodation that we found. For whatever dumb reason, the chicken and chips that they CAN make gluten free is not advertised that way on the menu. But to their credit, the cook was SUPER good about making sure to cook the meal in a safe way for someone with a gluten allergy.
Ate there twice, and the food was actually pretty good.
My only complaint - both this and the one near Rita sell baked potatoes, which are one of the only things in the park we found that would be gluten free, and both days they seemed to run out of the potatoes at midday. One day, we got the literal last half a potato they had left, and the other, they were already out.
I saw that Alton Towers had a notice up about switching suppliers or something and bringing more GF options to their menus... that's needed. Hopefully next time the situation will be better.
Ice cream by the Curse: Ok, I have to say, I was obsessed with this. The black ice cream in the black cone just made me happy. And it was really delicious. Especially with the toppings even if they kept falling off. Got it two days in a row, would get it every day on a return visit.
Hotel:
Splash Landings: No real complaints here, it was what I was expecting. Certainly didn't need air conditioning for the time of year. The staff was very friendly and they were great about storing multiple bags for us both on our arrival and on our checkout day.
The breakfast was good for a buffet style breakfast. Enough GF options to eat a good sized meal.
The only actual complaint I have, and this one is weird, but true - the shower is terrible. It has a half glass door that didn't lock in place, and the sides of the tub are tall. This is a recipe for disaster as it's very tempting to hold the door to try to climb out of the tub... but it doesn't lock, so if you do that, you're likely to fall and break your head open. And if you don't hold on... well, good luck climbing out of the tall tub with nothing to grip onto. Not even a towel rail.
I genuinely don't know how they went with something this unsafe in their design process. I don't know how people aren't injuring themselves all the time.
Overall thoughts:
It's certainly spread out - I was warned. It takes some hustling to get from one area to another in a timely fashion, but I didn't find it to be too much. It sure would be though in hot weather, I'll take cold any day.
Actually my biggest "complaint" is how long the queues are in terms of - walking forever, often uphill, to get to the ride. I'm used to theme parks that are able to section off large parts of the line when not in use which doesn't seem to happen much here.
Legit, it's a workout to ride Nemesis if it's not busy and all you have to do is walk to the station.
I didn't find the park to be run down, unclean, or understaffed. All the staff was great, and operations were great. Multiple trains on everything despite it not being busy at all.
Overall we absolutely loved our time here! It lived up to my expectations for sure. Nemesis, Smiler, and Wicker Man were my favorite things, but I dug Thirteen and Curse too.
And as I mentioned, Rita is the only ride I didn't really like - from someone who has visited a ton of theme parks, only one dud with the rest of the stuff being quality is kind of rare.
I'm so glad I finally got to visit, and I will absolutely be back. Hopefully Project Horizon actually happens and isn't later than 2026... currently that's the year I'd plan to come back.
Can't wait for my return!

2024.06.01 14:52 OrangePekoeMouse Indoor grill recommendations?

Hi,
Looking for a countertop indoor grill to use mostly to cook chicken breasts and skewers.
We’ve had a Hamilton Beach one for a few years and it has worked well for our purposes. However I find cleaning the housing to be a pain in the ass- particularly the little plastic pieces that hold the drip tray and get splattered.
We need to replace it as the non-stick coating doesn’t work anymore and I accidentally melted the plastic housing.
Before we just get a new version of the same model, I wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for easy to clean grills.
Thanks in advance!

2024.06.01 14:45 TheHorseCook Limitations of a joe jr?

Hi,
I’m thinking of getting the joe jr but I’m not entirely sold on the idea of the joe jr and am looking for more realistic insight into its use. I currently own a 23” kamado, but I’m thinking of getting the jr for quick in and out cooks. I mostly cook for myself, am pretty busy, and cook fairly small batches. I’m making mostly wings, ribeyes, and chicken thighs, nothing too big. I’ve done some research on it and watched some videos, but I feel like people aren’t completely transparent on where it falls short. I’m aware it’s a smaller cooking surface but how does the performance compare to the bigger joes? How is maintenance and up keep vs bigger grills? How’s food quality vs bigger grills? Id love for any insight from folks who have both this and larger grills and the preferred use case for each.
I really like the idea and the use I get out a ceramic grill but I am also considering a small jumbo joe Weber.
Let me know what you think, thanks!

2024.06.01 14:19 tvbee876 I think I messed up seasoning my new pan

I just got a CI pan from Ikea and I’m planning on using it today. I somehow misunderstood the instructions and put it in the oven for an hour without adding oil first. It says that the pan is pre-seasoned with vegetable soy bean. What should I do now? Should I put oil on then bake it again? Or should I just start cooking my steak on it?

2024.06.01 14:17 pathr0 Is ayurveda for real?

Is ayurveda for real?
Three days ago, I developed blisters on my hand. I'm not sure whether they are from an acid fly bite or a spider bite, as I found a tiny spider in my bed. Now I know what an acid fly bite looks like since I’ve experienced it a few times before, including one last month though it wasn’t as severe as this one, I’m almost completely sure that it’s an acid fly and that it’ll just go away on its own.
Anyway, the issue here is that my parents think it's a spider bite. So they took me to a "vaidhyan" at his house, who prescribed some Ayurvedic tablets, a mix of herbs to apply to the blisters, and a bottle of kashayam. I was instructed to follow this Ayurvedic regimen for seven days and to avoid eating chicken, beef, eggs, or any fried foods.
I don't really believe in Ayurveda and I’m concerned that this treatment could make things worse. Moreover, the "vaidhyan" looked like a fucking drug addict, with rotten teeth and could barely speak properly. He even gave me the kashayam in a beer bottle.
I’m not sure why I’m posting this here as I don’t really have a choice but to accept my fate. However, if anyone can identify the kind of bite this is and whether these so called ayurveda vaidhyans are legitimate, I would greatly appreciate it.

2024.06.01 13:22 PaleLake4279 What to pack for lunch

My husband eats out waaaay too much I try to save leftovers but he doesn't wanna eat the same thing.
He hates sandwiches as they get soggy and is easily averted from the "same thing".
What lunches can I make him that aren't too time consuming? He doesn't eat tuna, salmon or cold meats (salami). Will only eat cheese if it's cooked. Ie cheese toast. Doesn't eat vegemite.
Some snacks that are additional to dinner that I make at home are:
But now I'm stuck because if I make a stew for dinner I can't make another for lunch! This is so exhausting lol maybe I'll make pasta. He loves pasta.

2024.06.01 13:18 _otterly_confused Following my ideals is getting more and more expensive while meat is still cheap af

Hey there,
I could need some words of encouragement or even advice, because I'm kind of frustrated at the moment. Besides being vegan, I always tried to buy local and organic food, same with cosmetics. This meant not even bananas and let alone stuff like avocados (northern/central Europe). I never felt like missing out because there's still enough fresh food from the region. But now with inflation I kind of have the feeling I can't afford it anymore.
I live in one of Europe's country's with the highest inflation rate. For the past one or two years I noticed that I had to spend so much more money on food. I went from what I want to eat to what I can afford. For example I stopped buying bell peppers and tomatoes... I love food saving initiatives but you never know what you will get, so I can't count on that. Rent rises, energy prices rise, and my salary stays the same. And I work full time mind you.
A lot of people suggest farmers markets, but they are even more expensive...
I'm disgusted when I see that you can buy a chicken for the price of one bell pepper! Animal products are taxed less because government considers it "basic foods", disgusting
I eat more canned and frozen produce but I'm getting more and more frustrated. I love eating fresh food, l love cooking. And I always told people that I don't feel like missing out on anything but that sort of changed...
Maybe someone has an idea or even some words of encouragement. I don't want to give up my ideals but I also enjoy eating so much and it sucks that I can't afford it anymore while people buy meat for next to nothing. Also so much vegan stuff now is produced by companies like nestle. Sure it's cheaper, but I will never buy stuff from those evil corporations
Anyone else experiencing this rn? Please just tell me to hang in there haha

My (29F) Boyfriend (29M) keeps getting into fights with a cook at Waffle House

I know this sounds really weird, but here it is:
My BF and I have been together for three years. We met and started dating when we were both in graduate school, but I dropped out to go back to college to pursue a different career. We are both finished now, and live together making a fairly nice combined income.
Our income is relevant because we could afford to eat somewhere nice when we're out and about, but he always wants breakfast food. When he was a child his dad couldn't stand eating breakfast-type food in the afternoon or evenings, so his mom would make him waffles/pancakes, eggs, and bacon in the evening whenever his dad was busy or out of town. It's a wonderful and safe memory for him, and when he goes to his "happy place," he says that's where he always goes.
My BF is an incredibly nice and caring person. He's emotionally tuned in to everyone and recognizes arising issues a long time before they occur. He loves animals, and is kind and gentle with every bug, bird, and pet that he comes across. He's almost always willing to turn the other cheek in social situations where somebody tries to insult him or get aggressive towards him, and usually winds up defusing the situation and having a productive discussion about whatever the issue was. Except at Waffle House.
Anytime we're out he wants to go to the same goddamn Waffle House and get breakfast food. I'm not a big eater, so I used to not really care. I would just drink coffee and read my book while he enjoyed his food. But that became impossible once he and this one cook started chirping at each other every time we went there. BF complained about his eggs one time, because he likes them a little runny and they were served hard. The cook responded by giving him scrambled eggs. When he brought it up again the cook served him two hardboiled eggs. I think it was just part of the cook's schtick, and it was kind of funny tbh, but my BF wasn't able to laugh it off. When we left he was in kind of a bad mood, but we didn't really talk about it.
The next week we were out getting some shopping done, and he wanted to go to Waffle House again. I suggested that we try out a different place, or at least a different Waffle House location, but he only wanted the same Waffle House. We went in and sat down, and once again the same cook served his eggs wrong. My BF sort of snapped at him that he wasn't interested in messing around, and just wanted the correct eggs. The cook then served him a piece of toast with a hole cut out in the middle with a fried egg in it. My BF got really mad and threw the egg toast at the cook, which made the cook come around from behind the bar and throw it back at him. They ended up sort of wrestling/fighting until my BF was like "this is bullshit" and walked out. Nobody got hurt, but the few other people in there were watching and laughing a bit.
This is the crazy part: my BF keeps going back and ordering eggs and getting into fistfights with the same cook. It's almost a ritual at this point. My BF orders runny eggs, the cook serves him some other version of eggs, and then they beat the shit out of each other. I quit going with him after the second fight, but he kept going by himself. They're like Peter and the giant chicken from Family Guy, it's the weirdest thing. They've physically fought like 6 or 7 times over this.
I've tried to talk to him about it a few times, but he keeps saying it's a matter of principle. I've told him to talk to the manager or something like that, but he just waves me off. Apparently that cook hasn't yet made him the correct runny eggs, but it's like he spends the week learning new ways of preparing eggs to piss my boyfriend off.
The thing is, we're getting married this summer. He's accepted a job in a new city and it'll be easy for me to find work after the wedding, so we'll be moving away from his sworn enemy waffle house guy. He hasn't really been out since quarantine started, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's the first place he goes when restaurants open back up for sitting customers. But my main worry is this strange vindictive side of him I've never seen before that leads him to fight the same guy every week. The violence itself is an issue for me, but the obsession over it almost bothers me more.
Should I be worried that this side of him will come up later in our marriage? How do I get him to open up about this? Is this type of obsession a choice, or is it indicative of something deeper?

Here´s the recipe:
Salmon 🐟 💚:
🔘 300 g tofu (two blocks) 🔘 300 ml cucumber broth 🔘 1-2 tbsp white miso 🔘 2 nori leaves 🔘 2-3 tbsp beet juice (depending on the color you want to achieve) 🔘 2 tbsp soy sauce 🔘 1 tsp onion powder 🔘 1 tsp garlic powder 🔘 1 tbsp cornstarch 🔘 vegan butter as you like
Sauce 🥣
🔘 30 g vegan butter 🔘 1 tbsp flour 🔘 2 nori leaves 🔘 1-2 tbsp white miso 🔘 1-2 tbsp soy sauce 🔘 100 ml cucumber broth 🔘 1-2 tsp vegetable broth 🔘 1 tsp garlic powder 🔘 1 tsp onion powder 🔘 150 ml vegan cream (soy or oat works best) 🔘 175 g vegan crème fraîche 🔘 salt and pepper as you like (🔘 you could also add 100 ml vegan white wine)

Instructions
  1. Start by slicing the tofu block in half and making cuts 1–2 mm apart on the top of the fillets to replicate the texture of salmon.
  2. Next, blend together cucumber water, nori leaves, white miso, soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder until finely chopped. Add beet juice until the marinade turns into the desired color.
  3. Pour the marinade to a small saucepan and heat it up. Place the tofu fillets in the saucepan and simmer on medium heat for about 10 minutes, ensuring that the marinade seeps into the cuts of the fillets.
  4. Once done, remove the fillets from the pot and let them drain slightly. Dust the underside of the fillets with a bit of cornstarch.
  5. In a separate pan, heat some butter and fry the fillets from all sides until golden brown.
  6. While the tofu cooks, prepare the sauce. Melt vegan butter in a saucepan and stir in flour until combined. Rip the nori leaves apart and add it to the butter mixture. Quickly add white miso and soy sauce, then deglaze with cucumber broth. Pour in vegetable broth, onion powder, garlic powder, vegan cream, and vegan crème fraîche, and let it simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve the tofu salmon-fillets, generously drizzled with the sauce.

2024.06.01 12:03 fastfatdrops 15 mins Airfryer Technique: Ribeye Steak

15 mins Airfryer Technique: Ribeye Steak
For those who are hyper-busy and working around the clock, and have frozen steaks in your freezer...
All you need is an Airfryer + 1 frozen steak + 15 minutes.
  1. Presoak your frozen steak 🥩 in water for 2 mins (assuming your steaks are prepacked in airtight plastic seal)
  2. Remove steak from plastic seal, dab little dry with paper towel and add salt and/or black pepper
  3. Preheat Airfryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (or 200 degrees celcius) for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the steak into airfryer and cook at 400 degrees for 5 minutes
  5. After 5 minutes, flip the steak - cook at 400 degrees for another 5 mins* (well done)
* - 3 mins if you prefer medium rare - 4 mins if you prefer medium well - 5 mins if you prefer 80% well done
  1. Ready to serve.
  2. add butter slices on steak top for more fat / flavor
Here's a 290 grams Ribeye finished at 4 mins (after first flip)
I usually request for 350-400 grams Ribeyes from my butcher - much better for those who love bloodier results.
Happy Carnivor'ing kind folks :-)
Note: Cooking steaks on cast iron pans is defo much tastier, and searing on the outsides crispy golden brown.
For me, this is my grab and go technique if 20 mins is all I have to spare before I make a run for the door to my upcoming tasks.
I would rather eat an airfryer steak than to be tempted by convenience of a steak cooked in vegetable oils :-(( --- which made me quite sick for 2-3 days. Taste wise, airfried steak is acceptable, not great, but at least I am in knowldege control of my beef intake.
