2024.05.30 13:32 Eli_Freeman_Author How Rebels became my favorite Star Wars story arc, and how Ezra Bridger became my favorite character

I should start out by saying that I came in with fairly low expectations. Before watching it, I’d heard all kinds of bad things about Rebels, and at least some of those things turned out to be true. There were moments when, watching Rebels, I wanted to cringe, and to be completely honest, some of the most cringe-worthy moments in Star Wars, at least for me, were in Rebels. Ezra taking out storm troopers by throwing fruit at them (meilooruns), or Ezra taking out three stormtroopers with his hands cuffed behind his back and then joking about it, or Sabine jumping around the stormtroopers as if she were a Jedi (notice all three of these incidents involve stormtroopers, perhaps my biggest disagreement with Dave Filoni and perhaps a topic for another article). Incidents like these, along with a few other, less notable ones, all served to undermine this show for me. And yet, for all my complaints, and for all my desire to see a story with a crisper, more intense feel, more closely resembling The Clone Wars or better yet, Rogue One, I found myself thinking more and more about what would happen to Ezra as his story unfolded, and even more at the series finale.
I suppose the fact that the show ended on a cliffhanger accounts for a good part of the intrigue. Ezra went through a long and difficult journey and suffered quite a few ordeals for his young age, only to be left in a precarious situation at the last that anyone knows, with everyone, both his friends on the show and the audience in real life, wondering what would happen to him.
But I would like to think there’s more to it than that.
As annoying as his character could sometimes be, and as much as I might agree with and understand those people who found fault with him, Ezra Bridger’s journey may represent the greatest transformation of any character in Star Wars, and at the same time, perhaps the most realistic.
At the beginning, Ezra, by his own admission, is fairly immature and selfish, thinking only about himself. But we are given to know that there is a reason for this. From the age of seven he is left on his own and forced to survive by whatever means he can. In this light, his selfish, even mercenary attitude makes sense, and one could interpret his immaturity as a childish, if feeble attempt to stay positive in light of his circumstances, something that many young people with that type of character might do in his situation. To me at least this earned him some sympathy.
Though he steals to survive he’s never really malevolent, only uncaring and temperamental at his worst and often quickly able to realize his error when confronted with it, though after everything he endured it might be understandable if he couldn’t.
What ultimately drives his destiny is that deep down he wants something more than just survival. We learn at a certain point that his parents raised him to care about the world around him, ultimately sacrificing themselves to that end in their defiance of the Empire. He may have understandably been angry that in sacrificing themselves his parents left him orphaned, thus partly explaining his selfishness. And yet, when presented with an opportunity for something better, he was able to recognize it.
When he first meets the crew of the Ghost he is reluctant to join them. After seeing what happened to his parents and spending most of his childhood preoccupied with surviving, one couldn’t blame him. But after seeing what these people are willing to do for him, as well as for others, the better part of him wins out.
What makes his coming around more believable is that it is by no means automatic. At times it feels like he fights tooth and nail to stick to his old ways, acting rashly and without thinking, and suffering the consequences of his mistakes. From involving himself with the pirate Hondo Ohnaka, nearly getting killed in the process, to letting his guard down around the former Sith lord Maul, resulting in a permanent injury to his master Kanan (to be fair, Kanan also let his guard down), to using a Sith holocron and defying orders and endangering himself and his crew by going on a perilous mission, Ezra certainly isn’t the type to just “go along”.
Many are turned off by these antics, and feel that Ezra is no more than a nuisance to someone like Kanan, who they might see as a more interesting character. However, as stated earlier, Ezra’s actions are not without consequence, and for every mistake he makes, he learns and grows as a person. When he first works with Hondo it is perhaps the first time he does something on his own initiative as a Rebel, and though the Ghost crew ultimately disapprove, they, especially Kanan, understand his desire to branch out, and Ezra is able to work the situation in his favor, also gaining a long term ally in Hondo and repaying an old debt and later cementing his relationship with Visago, who had helped him previously. Ezra later feels a great deal of guilt for what happens to Kanan as a result of his mistake with Maul, and for a time, this leads him down a dark path. He dabbles in Darkside powers and takes needless risks against the orders of his superiors, nearly getting himself and his crew killed. The show could have perhaps done more to explore and expand on this turn of events but in short his command is temporarily suspended and he acknowledges his error. What really brings a sense of closure to this arc is that Kanan ultimately reassures Ezra, and never really blames him for what happened, which brings the two of them even closer together.
His relationship with the rest of the Ghost crew is much the same. Though they may disapprove of many of the things he does, and let him know it, they never condemn him and are always there to support and nurture him, even in his darkest moments. He in turn learns from them, and does likewise. Thus, for every mistake he makes, he becomes stronger and wiser as a person.
What further helps to sell Ezra’s character is his expressiveness. While I have to admit I don’t watch many cartoons or anime, before I saw Ezra I did not think that a cartoon character could have that kind of range. From cocky self assurance (which is admittedly at times annoying, though at times a bit charming), to fear and self doubt, to anger, to grim determination, to profound grief and sadness, and even to moments of quiet reflection and some emotions that I cannot fully define, Ezra’s character seems to have all the bases covered. And while I’ve seen other cartoon characters express these emotions at various times Ezra is the only one so far that I’ve seen to have expressed all of them, and in a way I’ve found to be very deep and believable, in fact more so than many live action actors that I have seen. Here credit must be given to Taylor Gray’s voice acting, as well as the animators who produced the visual representations of these expressions. It must be stated here that while I could not find any complaints about Taylor Gray’s voice acting, there were a number of complaints about the animation as compared to The Clone Wars, and I am inclined to agree.
The animation on Clone Wars was generally better, and Rebels may have suffered from time and budget constraints, but for all that, I believe they mostly nailed the facial expressions, particularly for Ezra, but also for the other characters. In this regard, as far as expressiveness, Ezra set a rather interesting record: he cried more than any other Star Wars character (at least in the movies and TV shows, I haven't read most of the books and comics). Whatever your feelings might be about seeing this on screen one has to admit that to do this with a character is a very serious risk, both in animation and live action, for if something like this is badly done, the audience may never forgive you. To show a character letting their guard down like that and being completely vulnerable MUST come across as sincere and appropriate to the situation, at the risk of forever losing all credibility and subjecting oneself to all kinds of mocking, perhaps deservedly so. If one attempts to “milk”, or exploit this, as has been done in countless other shows and films, it will be very quickly apparent and will not be allowed to slide. A person may not feel comfortable watching a character do this, but however uncomfortable they may feel perhaps the true test is whether they are willing to mock it, for if done improperly it appears as weakness, and mocking is what weakness invites. For all the complaints about Ezra, I could not find any complaints about his crying, and I have looked. To portray a character as vulnerable without making them look weak is perhaps one of the hardest things to do for a storyteller. Therefore, this is at least one aspect of Ezra that the show seems to have gotten right.
A character like Ezra invariably invites comparisons to other Star Wars characters, and the first one that comes to mind is Ahsoka Tano. This is one of the most popular characters in all of Star Wars, and I myself can’t think of any problems that I have with her. In fact, it is perhaps strange that while I can’t think of any cringe moments for Ahsoka, and can certainly think of several for Ezra, I still like Ezra better. How can this be? Well, you may disagree with me here, but to me it felt like Ezra was pushed harder than Ahsoka. Here, I can imagine some of you getting angry. Yes, they both risked their lives and got into all kinds of situations, but Ahsoka went through far more than Ezra did, being physically roughed up on a number of occasions and even tortured on several, something Ezra managed to avoid, even though he was captured about as many times as she was.
But the reason I found Ezra more sympathetic in spite of this is that even though Ahsoka arguably faced greater odds, she was much better prepared for them. Yes, one could make a strong case that she put herself at far greater risk, but she was raised from a young age at the Jedi Temple, then became an apprentice to Anakin Skywalker, one of the most powerful Jedi in the Galaxy, and perhaps because of this, I don’t remember once seeing her waver in her resolve, or truly showing any fear of what she was facing, save perhaps in her final confrontation with her former master. This is by no means an indictment of Ahsoka, and by no means does wavering or showing fear in and of itself make for a good character, but comparing her to Ezra is rather interesting. On many occasions, Ezra was obviously not only afraid, but terrified of what he was facing, and for good reason; he was grossly underprepared and he knew it.
His master, Kanan Jarrus, from the beginning did not want to train him, and tried to find someone else for the job, only agreeing reluctantly after he couldn’t. Kanan himself had not fully finished his training, and taught Ezra as best as he could, barely able to protect him from the threats that they faced. At some point he even admitted that he couldn’t really protect Ezra, not even from himself. For these reasons, it makes sense that Ezra was often afraid of the things he had to deal with, but what makes him truly compelling, in my opinion, is what he does with his fear. Whether confronting the Grand Inquisitor, or Darth Vader, or his own inner demons, however he might feel inside, he still does what is right and remains loyal to his friends and the cause he has taken up with them, never abandoning or giving up on the people who refused to abandon or give up on him. Thus, he serves as an inspiration for those facing similar issues of self doubt, even if they’re not facing the same odds.
Another character that comes to mind in comparison is Luke Skywalker. Here, the parallels are more obvious. Both are juveniles, or young male protagonists, who undergo the “Hero's Journey”, learning things about the world and themselves and growing as human beings in a classic coming of age story. Both start out as ordinary young men, both lose people that they care about and have their childhood security shattered, forcing them to go out into the world and deal with their traumas as well as the injustices that brought them about. It would seem as though there is not much difference between these two, but one does not have to look too closely to see that the differences are there. It may not be entirely fair to compare Luke and Ezra, but one must understand, I am fully aware of the circumstances behind their development as characters.
Lucas did not have as much time to spend on Luke, and was still somewhat new to storytelling. Therefore, as a character, Luke is far less nuanced. He is basically a blank slate who has a pretty ordinary, even boring life growing up on a farm, his greatest concern being his lack of adventure. While his life on Tatooine is anything but comfortable, it is generally stable and safe, meaning that the audience doesn’t need to feel as much concern for him. Yes, while it is true that Obi-Wan secretly kept Luke and the Lars family safe from the worst that Tatooine had to offer, from Tusken raiders to Jabba’s thugs collecting the water tax, there is no way that Luke could have known this, and thus it would have no effect on his psyche, again meaning that there is not as much need to feel concern for him. It must be clarified that Luke’s lack of development in the beginning is in no way his “fault”, and I don’t think he was a bad character overall. Some may even prefer a character that is more ordinary because it may be easier to project one’s own ideals onto them. But for myself I’ve grown accustomed to deeper characters with a more developed background, and more nuance. For this reason Ezra to me feels like “Luke 2.0”, maybe even “2.5”.
It should also be added that while Luke of course suffered traumas no less than Ezra did at the beginning of his story, losing his aunt and uncle and then his mentor, Obi-Wan, only days later, by the time this happened he was 19 years old, and had know Obi-Wan for only a few days, as close as they might have gotten. Traumas like these would be terrible for anyone at any age but one must admit that Luke would be far better able to deal with them at the age of 19 than Ezra would be at the age of seven. Plus, Luke was able to join the Rebellion in very short order, and find a sense of belonging there, while Ezra spent seven years on his own, and even after joining the Ghost crew took some time to adjust. All in all, reasons such as these make Ezra a far more compelling character for me.
I’ll emphasize here that I am in no way trying to denigrate the characters of Luke and Ahsoka, only to explain why I personally prefer Ezra. Ultimately what makes Ezra truly exceptional for me is how compelling he can be in an ordinary sort of way. What do I mean by this? Essentially I believe that perhaps more than, or even unlike any other Star Wars character, he can be fairly compelling without being thrown into any serious conflict.
This is quite an assertion but consider shows like Leave it to Beaver, or The Simpsons. Both feature plucky young protagonists with quirky personalities who grow up fairly carefree and learn simple life lessons as they do so, getting into some mischief every now and then. Many of us grew up on those kinds of shows, and while I believe Ezra could have a show like that about him, I’m not so certain about Luke and Ahsoka.
Many of us also experienced these kinds of things growing up ourselves, and if our own personality wasn’t quite like that we most likely knew someone whose personality was. We may have found these people annoying at times but may have gotten to like them as we got to know them, and enjoyed being around them. The above mentioned shows for whatever reason most people found compelling, even though they generally didn’t show more than ordinary life. Many of the episodes of Rebels in fact are no different in nature from episodes of those shows, even if the stakes are much higher.
Of course, Rebels goes much further. It certainly had its share of dark, even tragic moments, and took a bold step in taking a character not unlike Beaver Cleaver or Bart Simpson, and placing them in a context many of us might not have thought of before. For me it constituted a kind of thought experiment, one that I found very appropriate for the world we live in.
Essentially it asks the question: what if you took an ordinary, carefree, happy-go-lucky kid and put them into those kinds of circumstances? What if they suddenly got involved in a war, had to lose people that they cared about, made life and death decisions, and were responsible for things generally beyond their years? Would they be able to retain any of their childhood innocence? Should they even? What does it actually mean to mature as a person?
These are questions that many of us struggle with ourselves. For as stated earlier, Ezra did change greatly as a character, and I believe became a better human being, but at the same time, it’s a bit hard not to miss his younger, more upbeat, albeit somewhat more naive and brash persona, just as many of us might miss it in the people we grew up with as they matured, just as many of us might miss it within ourselves.
I don’t know if the people behind Rebels intended for their show to go that deep into Ezra's psyche, and I might be reading more into it than even they had in mind, but for me, those are the kinds of questions that came up, and stayed with me at the show’s finale. I can only hope that those themes are further explored and enlarged upon, if not with a continuation of Ezra’s story, then perhaps with some other work of fiction.
It is by asking questions such as these that we get insight into the world around us, and into our own lives. Characters like Ezra help us to ask those questions.

2024.05.30 01:05 mistformsquirrel Looking at getting into Legion with Rebels, I think I know what I want but also have a lot of questions

Hey all! So, I've been a mini gamer for some time and particularly have a lot of Battletech and 40k stuff, and also some Infinity. However... Star Wars was my first fandom, and I've really been bitten by the itch to revisit the Galaxy Far Far Away again, particularly because I've been playing SWTOR again.
So I have an idea of what I want to do but I don't know if it's feasible, or if the mini-conversion etiquette of this game would even allow for it as I don't really know what the commonly accepted rules are for such things.
What I'd like to do is build a Rebel army based around Sabine Wren and Ahsoka but convert the minis to be my SWTOR main a Smuggler using the Mercenary fighting style, and a Jedi Consular who uses the Sith Assassin fighting style. Cause I'm a weirdo like that. (Well and I rarely get to play so, while I like to build legal lists so I can, modeling is the main chunk of the hobby I get to engage with.)
So I guess question 1 is: are people generally chill if I convert minis to look like my own characters, even though they're using named character rules? As long as they seem pretty obvious who they're meant to be? I figure it's probably fine but, I like to ask whenever engaging with a new mini community just on the off chance it's "Not The Done Thing".
2: I don't really know the game that well yet - I have some broad understanding from watching tutorial videos and messing with the builder, but I guess I'm wondering: How dumb would this list be? Like, I'm not looking to play at tournaments or be awesome, but "base level can play a game and provide a decent challenge for an average opponent" would be what I'm after? Is it legal even? (Again very new, I *think* it is from what I've picked up but... figure it's worth a double check)
List: Operative -
Sabine Wren - Darksaber, Shield, Tenacity - 151 Ahsoka Tano - Offensive Stance, Tenacity, Hope, Battle Meditation - 184
Corps -
Rebel Troopers x 3 - 120pts
Special Forces -
Mando Resistance (Clan Wren) - Tristan, Ursa, Up Close and Personal - 106 Mando Resistance - Beskad Duelist, Up Close and Personal - 100
Heavy -
A-A5 Speeder Truck - Shriv Suurgav, Refurbished Gonk Droid, Backworld Medic, AG-2G Quad Laser Cannon
My concern is how bare bones the Rebel Troopers are, and also I'm not sure if making the speeder truck a Field Commander actually fulfills the commander requirement or not. Like, in my 40k-brain thinking I'm assuming the barebones troopers can hold objectives/do objectives and Be Annoying, while the Mandos, Truck and characters do the heavy fighting? Am I right in that thinking?
Like I said, not looking to be like a tournament winner or anything - mostly this is gonna wind up as a modeling project due to the lack of game scene in my immediate area - but I would like to be at least an entertaining opponent if I do get to play, if that makes sense?
Thank you for your time, and apologies for the length, appreciate the help!

2024.05.29 18:47 Digitizoid When the next Conquest comes around should I do normal?

When the next Conquest comes around should I do normal?
So the past couple times I've red crated the easy Conquest pretty early on. But I'm worried about jumping to Normal mode. I'm not 100% sure if I could hit the 3rd crate (which would be technically better than red crate easy). Any suggestions would be great, and maybe some suggestions on what teams I should try and focus on realistically that I might be able to unlock/gear before the next Conquest comes around.

Continue to Farm Gear or get another Team Up? New Player
Hello there,
I am a new Player and Just reached lvl 81. Got my Phoenix Team, except 1, my Palpatin and Vader up to G10. I cant get them to G11, because they have to be lvl 84+ to use the Gear in them. So do I Farm their Gear till then and I wont get any stronger? Or do I use this time to get my DS Team/Jedi to G10? Or should I even start BH?
I always hear "start the Farm, Finish the Farm" but when I have not unlocked everything yet it seems a bit pointless.

Journey Guide Teamplans
Hello, I am once again asking an opinionated question. Is this a good game plan so far? My only real progress has come from lightspeed bundles and hyperdrive bundles. I have no idea what I should be focusing on, but this is my game plan so far. I need the R2D2 team maxed so I can get Commander Luke. After that I was going to focus on the Old Republic team for JKR. I'm about 500 gp away on my C3-PO to pass another GAS tier, that one should be simple enough. All and all, am I on the right path? Any tips are appreciated.

2024.05.29 01:11 Dardha Which leaders are missing in Set2? (Deep Analysis)

Update: Thank you for the awesome comments. I clearly missed some characters that have many more chances to appear. So I did some corrections.
First, let´s see some details:
Then, after all reveals (29.05), for heroism we are missing:
1 Blue (rare) and 1 yellow (common).
For villains we are missing:
1 Blue (common) and 2 yellow (common and rare).
This set drinks from Mandalorian, Solo, the Sequels and bounty hunters. The characters that we could expect to see or were protagonists of this media are:
The Mandalorian
Mandalorian (Starter, yellow)
Grogu
Bo-Katan (red)
Greef Karga
Cara Dune
The Armorer
Cobb Vanth
Ahsoka Tano
Boba Fett (green)
Moff Gideon (starter, green)
Cad Bane
Solo
Han Solo (red)
Tobias Beckett
Lando (yellow)
Qi´ra (blue)
Dryden Vos Maul
Bad Batch
Hunter (green)
Doctor Royce Hemlock
Vice Admiral Rampart
Force Awakens
Rey (blue)
Finn
Poe Dameron
Kylo (red)
Snoke
General Hux
Bounty Hunters
Bossk (red)
Jabba (green)
Dengar
Greedo
Hondo Ohnaka (green)
Dr. Aphra
Dash Rendar
So... if we take out the characters already in use:
The Mandalorian
Grogu
Greef Karga
Cara Dune
The Armorer
Cobb Vanth
Ahsoka Tano
Cad Bane
Solo
Tobias Beckett
Dryden Vos
Maul
Bad Batch
Doctor Royce Hemlock
Vice Admiral Rampart
Force Awakens
Finn
Poe Dameron
Snoke
General Hux
Bounty Hunters
Dengar
Greedo
Dr. Aphra
Dash Rendar
So let´s eliminate some more. Let´s see the villains first, there are very few options actually:
The Mandalorian
Cad Bane
Solo
Dryden Vos
Maul
Bad Batch
Doctor Royce Hemlock
Vice Admiral Rampart
Force Awakens
Snoke
General Hux
Bounty Hunters
Dengar
Greedo
My bet goes with Cad Bane for sure. Probably as the cunning villain. The other cunning villain could be Vice Admiral Rampart. So we have a second Bad Batch character. We are missing one vigilance leader. Here, my bet is Maul.
For heroism is a bit harder: 1 Blue (rare) and 1 yellow (common).
The Mandalorian
Grogu
Greef Karga
Cara Dune
The Armorer
Cobb Vanth
Ahsoka Tano
Solo
Tobias Beckett
Force Awakens
Finn
Poe Dameron
Dr. Aphra
I took out some characters that I think fit less the leader role. My bet here is The Armorer for Vigilance and Dr. Aphra for Cunning.
What do you think?

Please could you give me some direction?
As the title says. I’ve just finished exams, and I’d like to devote a bit more time to swgoh. I’ve got 2.8m gp and I’ve casually watched Anhald, but could anyone give me some more direction on my roster? (I sort of cheated and got a couple of lightspeeds a while ago). Thanks in advance!

Easy red crate without GR fleet built up
Main job is to just keep defender alive, mine is g12 6* so it doesn't need to be a top end fleet to do this, pass as many basics as you can to defender and drop them 1 by 1. Make sure if you can to pull out a LS reinforce before battle ends for the 1ls and 1ds
